"I heartily recommend this book for anyone and everyone who deals with disability in the family!" Joni Eareckson Tada, Joni and Friends International Disability Center No place is so dark, no shadow so deep, that God can't find us. Does the suffering you witness or experience seem pointless? Do you feel like your problems are endless? Do you wonder if God cares about you? Caregivers live in the daily shadows of death, countless duties, and shattered dreams. But they don't have to exist in the shadows of their faith. Nurse and veteran caregiver Pam Thorson offers weary families hope and insights gained from her own struggles. Out from the Shadows is a collection of thirty-one stories that pull back the veil on the unique joys and challenges of caregiving. Each devotion draws from the author's own experiences to reveal a fresh understanding of Jesus' call upon our lives as we care for others.
Out from the Shadows: 31 Devotions for the Weary Caregiver is a comparatively small book--only 180 pages--but it is enormous in the impact it will have on those who read it. It is not a quick read, not a bunch of pretty words to rush through so you can move on to the next entry on your want-to-read list. Out from the Shadows is a book to be examined, to search for the truths that are most meaningful to you personally and then to roll them around in your mind until your heart is at rest.
Written for caregivers and for anyone who has suffered through life’s hardships, Out from the Shadows is a book to be read alone, in silent contemplation during times of personal devotion. Moreover, it is a book to be shared in group settings, in the company of loving, supportive friends who have also dealt with loss and sorrow.
Because I was on a deadline, I read through the book quickly, or as quickly as I could considering the many times a word or phrase grabbed me and demanded that I pay attention for a moment longer. I look forward to going back through it more slowly, meditating on the thought-provoking, soul-searching questions at the end of each chapter and lingering over special gems I missed the first time through.
Thorson’s words will linger long after you’ve turned the last page. Following are some of my favorite quotes, at least until I read it again.
The Master walks through His garden, knowing the loss we experience is only temporary because He’s been to the grave, and He came back with the keys to death and life.
No matter what circumstances grip our lives, the secret to serenity is found on the other side of the sun.
What greater thanks can we give to a loving Creator than to relish the treasure of a new dawn and to trust Him to take care of our tomorrows?
“Out from the Shadows” is a wonderful devotional book for anyone who needs encouragement. While meant for caregivers, I believe anyone who reads it will be inspired by Pam Thorson’s heartfelt true stories. They show that God is still there and has a plan for us, even during our darkest times. I highly recommend this encouraging read!
As a recent caregiver myself, I found it had ideas and information that helped to clarify my thoughts. I shared it with a friend who is going through much the same experiences that I did.
