About the author

Qurratulain Hyder was an influential Indian Urdu novelist and short story writer, an academic, and a journalist. One of the most outstanding literary names in Urdu literature, she is best known for her magnum opus, Aag Ka Darya (River of Fire), a novel first published in Urdu in 1959 from Lahore, Pakistan, that stretches from the 4th century BC to post partition of India. Popularly known as "Ainee Apa" among her friends and admirers, she was the daughter of writer and a pioneer of Urdu short story writing Sajjad Haidar Yildarim (1880–1943). Her mother, Nazar Zahra, who wrote at first as Bint-i-Nazrul Baqar and later as Nazar Sajjad Hyder (1894–1967), was also a novelist and protegee of Muhammadi Begam and her husband Syed Mumtaz Ali, who published her first novel.

She received the 1967 Sahitya Akademi Award in Urdu for Patjhar Ki Awaz (Short stories), 1989 Jnanpith Award for Akhir-e-Shab Ke Humsafar, and the highest award of the Sahitya Akademi, India's National Academy of Letters, the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship in 1994. She also received the Padma Bhushan from the Government of India in 2005.

قرۃ العین حیدر مشکل ہیں! سب سے آسان الفاظ میں تو یہی کہا جا سکتا ہے۔
ان کی ’’آگ کا دریا‘‘ پڑھنے کی کوشش تب کی تھی جب مجھے عمروعیار اور ٹارزن کی کہانیوں پر ہی رہنا چاہیئے تھا۔ اب عرصے بعد پھر ڈرتے ڈرتے دوبارہ درشن لیے تو ’’چھٹتی نہیں ہے منہ سے یہ کافر لگی ہوئی‘‘ والے حالات پیدا ہوگئے۔ ۔ ۔ دل میں لینٹر والا گھر کر لیا عینی آپا نے۔ کیا ہی خوبصورت انداز سے کہانی لکھتی ہیں! ۔
کتاب ہے تو افسانوں کا مجموعہ ہی مگر بقول گورا ’ناٹ جسٹ این ادر مجموعہ‘۔ ۔ ۔ افسانوں کا انداز روایت سے بالکل ہٹ کر ہے۔ ایسا کہ محسوس ہوتا ہے کوئی مِنی ناول پڑھ رہے ہیں۔ افسانے کے پیسوں میں ناول کا مزہ! ناولز کے شوقین حضرات بھی اسے پسند کریں گے۔
ڈالن والا، یاد کی اک دھنک جلے، قلندر، کارمن کتاب میں سب سے زیادہ پسند آئے۔ ان پر جگہ جگہ آپ بیتی کا گمان ہوتا ہے جو افسانے کے لبادے میں قاری کو پیش کر دی ہو۔ یاد کی اک دھنک جلے کی گریسی، قلندر کا اقبال اور کارمن کی کارمن ایسے کردار ہیں جو قاری کے ذہن سے نکالے نہیں نکلتے۔ حیرت کی بات نہیں جو اس کتاب کو ہندوستان کا سب سے بڑا ادبی ایوارڈ ’’ساہتیہ اکادمی ایوارڈ‘‘ دیا گیا تھا۔ قرۃ العین حیدر سے تعارف کے لئے بہترین آپشن ہے۔

"The Sound of Falling Leaves" is a transcreation from Urdu short story collection "Patjhar ki Aawaz" in English as "The Sound of Falling Leaves". She is an unconventional writer and draws its reader to the world of reality through creative path. Two stories from this collection "Honour" and "The Housing Society" became my favourites.

A collection of stories of varying quality. I quite enjoyed point/counterpoint. Others may have been more interesting to read at the time she published them but don't seem to stand the test of time. Numerous typos. Book seems to have published without a proof reader.

Wonderful short stories, best of which are 'Carmen'/'کارمن' (set in the Phillipines) and 'Qalandar'/'قلندر'. Even though these sentiments for pre-Partition India are so common among the writers of this generation, Hyder still feels fresh, unusual in her focus on highly literate women and men.
