Caught by the renegade forces of the Alpha Legion and forced to take refuge in the Alaxxes Nebula, the Space Wolves are bloodied but unbowed. The young pack leader Bjorn – now known to his warriors as ‘the One-Handed’ – is desperate to recover his honour in battle, but replacing lost limbs for proud legionaries is not a task worthy of the Iron Priests. If Bjorn is to fight again, then he must seek out new claws for himself and christen them in the blood of the traitors...

CW: Ableism, Epiphets for Disabled People

April 2024 Read using the Horus Heresy Omnibus Project Reading Order Omnibus XVII Shadow of the Warmaster III Jaws of Defeat (https://www.heresyomnibus.com/omnibus...) as part of my Oath of Moment to complete the Horus Heresy series and extras.

Another practically perfect Black Library Advent Calendar amuse bouche!

The tale of how Bjorn acquired the weapon that gained him the name Fell-Handed.

In the same vein as Bjorn: Lone Wolf, this is incredibly short, but extremely sweet story of an important and fundamental moment for Bjorn, but not necessarily one that is needed for the main narrative.

The audio drama production is great and, regardless of me converting to Keebleism, it's wonderful to hear the phenomenal work of Toby Longworth again after so long.

Truly exquisite! I really came close to bumping this up to full marks, but I agree with past me about the unchecked ableism not being great. I do think this story would be just that much better were it not clearly being written by someone without the lived experience or direct discussion and input of somone with a similar disability.

Through using the Horus Heresy Omnibus Project (www.heresyomnibus.com) and my own choices, I have currently read 32 Horus Heresy novels (including a repeat), 19 novellas (including 2 repeats), 108 short stories/ audio dramas (including 6 repeats), as well as the Macragge's Honour graphic novel, 15 Primarchs novels, 4 Primarchs short stories/ audio dramas, and 2 Warhammer 40K further reading novels and a short story...this run. I can't say enough good about the way the Horus Heresy Omnibus Project suggestions. I'm loving it! Especially after originally reading to the releases and being so frustrated at having to wait so long for a narrative to continue.

***

A super quick, but super sweet tale of how Bjorn got his Wolf's Claw after losing an arm at the burning of Prospero.

Bjorn literally just tries to jump the queue to get a new arm in the extremely busy interim between shit going wrong and full Heresy in the death throes of Great Crusade, only to come up with a different option.

This literally is just ten minutes of a guy wanting a new arm and getting one, but it is written with such high quality with exquisite details that even me, somone with Hypoaphantasia can 'picture' it.

One more step on his venerable journey to becoming the Fellhanded, though his is lucky he didn't end up with the Yoinkhanded or Stickyfingered.

This is one of those significant moments that just doesn't fit anywhere that sometimes are a little disappointing as I find the tiny, Black Library Advent Calendar audio dramas rathe rhit and miss, but this an absolute banger.

The only thing that made it so that I can give this the full marks it otherwise deserves is the ableism with which Bjorn is written to think about himself, and by extention others. I don't think this was done with any ill-intent, but it is shitty for disabled people, at least this one, especially from a hero and it going unchallenged.

Any story featuring the legendary Bjorn the fell handed is epic. Also a bonus the alpha legion is in it.

Bjorn lost his hand at Prospero, earning the epithet “One-hand” and now seeks a replacement from the forgemaster deep in the bowels of the flagship.

It’s an incredibly simple story, Bjorn wants a new hand and he gets a new hand. But it is written with such style and pathos that I found myself completely enthralled.

The Alpha legion would grow to fear the one they called Bjorn the Fell-hand.

Short, sweet, characterful. A nice little touch in the HH and a good opener to Wolf King.

An enjoyable little tale that continues to build up the legendary saga of Bjorn. Known at this time as the "one handed," Bjorn is seen fighting against the Alpha Legion in a ship boarding-action.

At only 10 minutes long don't expect anything detailed, as with most short stories and audio dramas in the Horus Heresy series this is a bridge between 2 novels.(Specifically in this case Scars and an as yet un-named & unannounced sequel.)

A fun little micro audio drama(only 9+ mins), but it was cool getting to see Bjorn up close and personal after Scars.
And just as I'd expect of the Wolves, they aren't ONLY hiding in Alaxxes, they are also trying to take the fight to the Alpha Legion.
It was also interesting in that we got to see some of the stress lines unfolding in the Space Wolves ranks, as they are fighting a more and more desperate war.
Nice to see Bjorn starting his transition to becoming the Fell-Handed.
