Ever since I discovered my passion for traveling, I had been yearning for a trip to the Himalayas. In 2021, my friends and I planned a 15-day trip to Uttarakhand, but unfortunately, we had to cancel it due to the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the last four years, I have been eagerly preparing for this long-awaited journey, and finally, this year, our dream trip is set to happen.
To fuel my excitement and gather insights for the journey, I purchased around 8 to 10 travel journals by various authors, each sharing their Himalayan travel experiences. After finishing Papillon, I decided to start a travelogue by M.K. Ramachandran. This was my first time reading his work, and unfortunately, it turned out to be quite average. While the book started off engaging, by the halfway mark, it began blending myths and irrational theories, presenting them as historical facts, which dulled my overall experience.

His initial mentions of his Kailasa Parikramana were interesting, but as the book progressed, he repeatedly brought it up in almost every interaction, which felt excessive and self-indulgent. It gave the impression that he was leveraging his past pilgrimage for validation. The author should have avoided caste-related remarks, as they felt inappropriate and unnecessary. That said, I must acknowledge that the book was informative and even inspired me to explore parts of Uttarakhand that aren’t included in our upcoming itinerary. The author deserves appreciation for his effort and dedication in exploring less-traveled regions of the Himalayas, which were often overlooked by other travelers at the time the book was written.

This is purely my personal opinion. Readers who appreciate travelogues interwoven with religious beliefs and devotion may find this book valuable. However, for someone seeking a purely travel-focused narrative, this might not be the ideal choice.

More than the book what i really liked were the places the author has visited. Kudos to the risk taking ability of him. What I really did not like was the very conservative casteist thinking of the author which was sometimes looking very irritating. Despite that, I look forward to read his next book on Kailas yatra too, since the narration is fabulous.
