Serenity is found! The crew, including Jayne and a certain bounty hunter, get themselves ready to restock and retrieve when River wakes from her self-induced sleep and gives Mal a mandate . . . which will eventually—hopefully—maybe—lead to Zoe’s rescue!

Zack Whedon (born August 14, 1979) is an American screenwriter ('Deadwood', 'Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog' and 'Fringe') and Comic Book writer ('Dr. Horrible and Other Horrible Stories', 'Terminator: 2029 to 1984' and Firefly/serenity's 'The Shepherd's Tale').
He graduated in 2002 with a film degree from Wesleyan University where he served as president of the Eclectic Society. Zack is from a family of writers: he is the son of screenwriter Tom Whedon, grandson of screenwriter John Whedon, and the brother of screenwriter/musician Jed Whedon and producer/director/writer Joss Whedon.
His first professional work in television was as a production assistant on his brother Joss Whedon's series, 'Angel'.
He is best known for his work, alongside his brothers Joss Whedon and Jed Whedon, on the parody musical 'Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog' which he co-created and co-wrote.
And boy did I get more Kaylee ... not as much as I wanted, but her singular page in this issue was fantaaaaastic. River does wake up, but with a mission more than a vengeance. Something to take us to the end of this mini-series. Rescuing all of the others like River. We knew there had to be more. I hope they are the answer to saving Zoe.
Speaking of which, there was a little of Zoe in this issue. She's arrived in prison. She is told no one ever leaves this place. Famous last words. That's pretty much promising to get her off of that world in a fucking awesome way. Unless of course ... the Whedons do what they do best--kill everyone that matters and ruin all the beautiful relationships.
Also (and random), I wanna see the Vamps and the Reavers team up. That would be some awesome big-bad-y-ness that would be a challenge. There must be a Slayer in the 'verse somewhere. There must be Vamps ... I better run before I start writing fan-fic right here!
Another 10 minutes of Firefly. A lot of talking, a little bit of violence. These last two issues felt like a re-introduction. A reminder of who everyone is, not quite like Out of Gas - more like a pilot. We get one more character at the end - I was thinking they were going a different way but the way in the story was better.
Well here we have the return of characters we last saw not involved with our crew in a good way. Jayne is optimistic about Mal but you know there is going to be trouble just from that.
The story continues, but right now it feels there should have been some major revelations by now. Instead, the plotline keeps on meandering. It's about time something surprising happens.
There was a big block of time for me in between when I read issues one and two of Serenity: Leaves on the Wind and when I started issue three. For my friends on Goodreads who don't know, I am very obsessed with Firefly and anything Joss Whedon related. When I heard about this comic series I couldn't wait to read it.
Issues one and two started the story going and kept me really interested in what they were going to do with the series. However, issue three is almost like a road block. Yes, it does have a point and does a good job propelling the story forward. But at the same time, it feels slow and very filler like.
There were pieces of this issue that I found to be boring, including a section that was just about River having a nightmare, and I kept wondering when they were going to get to the point, what was the point of this issue?
When you, as the reader, do finally understand what the point of issue number three is it's very much an okay... kinda feeling. The writers clearly could have combined this plot point into another issue, it didn't need to have it's own.
However, I will say this. As I said, it had been some time since I had read issues one and two, this issue was a great re-introduction for me into the Serenity: Leaves on the Wind comic series. I had forgotten some things in the time that had passed and this issue was a nice refresher. Had I read issue three right after issues one and two, it would have probably received a lower rating from me.
Issue #3 didn't have as much progress in the storyline as the first two issues did, but it was still enjoyable. I really liked the opening story and the artwork. I'm always interested in learning more about River. What really stole the show in this issue is Kaylee! I won't spoil it, but it was fantastic.
A few more pages of explanation would have made it perfect. Kaylee is badass. River has an idea. Mal is coming up with a plan. Jayne shows feeling. Good, but confusing cliffhanger. Very happy with this.
Each issue of the Leaves on the Wind series is fantastic in keeping true to the characters from the show and movie. Fans of Firefly and Serenity will be happy to see some minor characters make their return in this comic as well.
And the gang gets back together, and Mal is not too happy about it. This issue, in particular, is where this series starts to really read like an episode of the show for me. So, so pleasing.
