Explanations of how identities are constructed are fundamental to contemporary debates in feminism and in cultural and social theory. Formations of Class & Gender demonstrates why class should be featured more prominently in theoretical accounts of gender, identity and power. Beverley Skeggs identifies the neglect of class, and shows how class and gender must be fused together to produce an accurate representation of power relations in modern society. The book questions how theoretical frameworks are generated for understanding how women live and produce themselves through social and cultural relations. It uses detailed ethnographic research to explain how `real′ women inhabit and occupy the social and cultural posit
at times, revelatory. theres a simple rapture in seeing your own experiences reflected back to you - at one point she briefly mentions some women having irregularly employed ‘odd job’ dads and I got all sappy about being recognised. The first few chapters are really great, and this is valuable research.
however, i think at times it can make sweeping generalisations due to the homogeneity of the women studied. i know skeggs puts lots of emphasis on them *not* being homogenous and not making generalisations, but theyre all white, all cishet, presumably none are disabled.
as an autistic, queer, trans working-class person there were times when her analysis and her statements about working-class identity rang false for me. but they always rang really true for my mum, who basically lived the exact same life - gen x, bad grades, caring courses, trying to claw her way into respectability - except illness put all that to a halt.
now to find the version of this that’s all about working class queers...
Still useful as a book to help you think - I do think some of its findings are specific to its time and place but there are others which perhaps need to be revisited to help us analysed things that have changed...but not always in a wholly liberatory direction.I haven't managed to become a fan of Bourdieu (to be fair I have only read one of his books) but I see that a lot of gender and class theorists use him so I suppose I will have to expand my reading in that direction too.
This is a really good, easy to follow read on the subject of femininity and class based gender expectations. The notion of 'respectability' is discussed, and it seems to be something that some working class women strive for, in order to separate themselves from other working class women. If you have no groundings in sociology it might be harder read, but the basic themes are easy to get your head round anyway, and any difficult words can be looked up (I always have a dictionary nearby when reading books like this lol!). A great read for anyone interested in gender, sexualities, class and research processes.
