When I began reading this book, I wasn't sure I was going to like it because it seemed strange and (since it is more of a short story) there weren't a ton of details. As I continued, however, I realized how wrong I was. The story was great! The author very cleverly wraps a mans search to better himself around the twelve steps that are taught in AA. It makes you consider those steps in a different light. They are no longer just for addicts.
I also grew to like Johnny's character a lot. He is simple and not the brightest but he also came across as sincere. He was crude and insulting and a bit selfish, but in the end, he came through for his friends. As I was reading, I could almost picture a TV episode taking place in somewhere like New Jersey. In my mind they had Jersey accents and were dealing with mobsters instead of just gangsters. I love it when I can see the story in my mind. That's how I knew I was hooked. I had a lot of fun with this book.
All in all, I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick, yet fun and entertaining, read.
From the first page this book had me laughing - it reminded me a bit of "John Dies in the End" with its deadpan silliness, crazy characters and happenings and seemingly deluded lead. Some of the verbal twists are just genius. The send up of gangster stereotypes are hilarious. I'll read anything Nick Tory writes after this! Laugh out loud, short and just FUN.
I loved the humorous mentality of the main character (Johnny); trying so hard to follow the 12 steps of AA and improve himself - all while dealing with the struggles of his current situation. There’s a lot going on in this story; all packed into one quick read...and the bonus...it had a nice, little plot twist at the end. Now it’s on to Johnny Vegas.....
I really wanted to like this book, it was deemed fun and silly but I just couldn't find anything funny in it at all, I guess I've grown past adolescent humor. Two stars only because it actually had a few vaguely interesting plot points.
Pretty funny little short book. Definitely a bit of dumb humor but enough to make you sit back and chuckle during the afternoon. I spent most of the time saying "Johnny you're a dumb oaf!" I enjoyed the book and I look forward to see what's in book 2.
