DePaola's distinctive illustrations show the incredible story of a small boy and a giant. A lovely retelling of the hero child who became king who helped save his people with the confidence given by God. A wonderful introduction to the heroes of the Bible.

I read the Magnificat-Ignatius hardcover edition of David and Goliath with my nine- and ten-year-olds. They came close, studying the illustrations as I read. The words and text hold the same charm as other Tomie dePaoloa books that we've enjoyed together.

The book sticks to the story in 2Samuel and goes a little deeper than the short, familiar retellings of David slaying the giant. (My daughter pointed out that she'd never heard the part about David beheading Goliath.) It makes clear the message that God is the one, true God, who comes to the aid of the small and lowly.

The book itself is sturdy and beautiful, perfect for reading and re-reading in the hands of children and adults.
