Colonial Salem The moment the stranger's dark eyes meet hers, Anne Scudder's world is immediately overthrown by chaos. That single flare of desire is immediate, driving away all notions of propriety. Instead, Anne is consumed with sinful thoughts--ones that no unmarried girl should ever have for a man who isn't her husband . . . But Josiah Cromwell is no stranger. It's been six years since Josiah stole kisses from Anne, his best friend's younger sister. Six years since Josiah left after his best friend's death, burdened by the knowledge that he was responsible for destroying Anne's family. Now he's returned to claim the woman he can't live without. But even as their desire threatens to consume them both--body and soul--the dark workings of suspicion and witchcraft are afoot. Because in Salem, too much passion can lead a woman to ruin . . . and condemned to death. Contains mature themes.
Sarah and her husband of what he calls “many long, long years” live on the mid-Atlantic coast with their six young children, all of whom are perfectly adorable when they’re asleep. She never dreamed of becoming an author, but as a homeschooling mom, she often jokes she writes fiction because if she wants anyone to listen to her, she has to make them up. (As it turns out, her characters aren’t much better than the kids). When not buried under piles of laundry, she may be found adrift in the Atlantic (preferably on a boat) or seeking that ever-elusive perfect writing spot where not even the kids can find her.
She loves creating unforgettable stories while putting her characters through an unkind amount of torture—a hobby that has nothing to do with living with six children. (Really.) Though she adores nail-biting mystery and edge-of-your-seat thrillers, Sarah writes in many genres including contemporary and ghostly paranormal romance. Her ever-growing roster of releases may be found on her website.
An interesting romance set in 1692 Salem Town and Salem Village. Set at the same time as the witch trials, although the story of this book does not revolve around them. The H/h are puritans and the author has done a very good job with dialogue, historical details etc. They were teenage sweethearts and Josiah arrives back into town after six years, determined to win Anne's hand. I read the first book in this series some years ago and while there are a couple of cross over characters, they are stand alone reads. Everyone is suspicious of everyone else being a witch, so it's interesting. There are misunderstandings naturally and you just want to yell at the characters for being so steeped in their beliefs. Except the puritans really were, of course. I did find it easy to put the book aside, but that was purely because it does have a lot of internal narration and I'm not always fond of that. There are some steamy scenes but tastefully written. 3.5 stars. Not many authors have tried to tackle this time period, so 5 stars for that. They were frightened of the woods too... Witches. 😀
A FORBIDDEN FRUIT SYNDROME hero tries to reclaim his dead BF little sister, but it's in Salem & witchy superstition is afoot!
Anne Scudder has only loved 1 man & that was her brother's BF Josiah. She not only lost her brother when he die, but she lost Josiah as he moved away. He would steal sweet kisses, then not so sweet kisses & he will always hold her heart. Will she ever find her love again?
Josiah Cromwell is back in Salem for only 1 thing, Anne. After the death of her brother, his father sent him away in shame, but hided it behind his education, as he was sent to school. He father always blamed him for his mom's death & his new wife never liked him, so he never came back until he could provide & marry Anne.
As Salem village is having a house raising for a newlywed couple, Anne & her BF Prudence are hiding in the flowers & sneaking looks at the new guy in town, as he is flexing his muscles. Josiah doesn't know how to meet Anne again, but she is eyeballing him over the flowers, giggling with her friend & bravely shoving & spilling a glass of water at him. As they chat, she thinks she knows him, he tells her it's him, she is floored with happiness, he sneaks a kiss & her world is bright again! They hatch a plan for him to go to her family's Inn, apply for the handyman job & hopefully her parents won't remember him, so he can be close to her & woo her parents with his hard work. What do they say about plans?
All doesn't go well as her grandma gives him the evil eye, her mom treats him like servant, Josiah looks at her too long, living so close, but so far & temptations aplenty, but at least her dad likes him & all the hard work. Now Salem was talk of evil, witches, a stranger stalking the forest, a witchcraft hanging, Anne walking too far, & Josiah goes searching, she feels the darkness closing in, they actually meet at the cross roads, find shelter, a fire is started with kindling, wet clothes removed & Anne's inner BAD GIRL takes her man. Can Anne love him after learning of his part in the death of her brother? Will Josiah earn her parents respect & her hand? Is Josiah's past coming back to haunt him? Why the evil eye from grandma?
This is my 2nd book by Ms. Ballance & the 2nd book of her Sins of Salem series. This book has the FORBIDDEN FRUIT SYNDROME & I personal love that storyline, which is CRAVING a little sister & Ms. Ballance added a brother's death in the mix. Anne was a heroine in 1600s & I thought 1800s were tough, but Salem was not a friendly place for young love or even happiness. I hate (a word I rarely use) busybodies, gossip HOs & people who pass their pain on to others, but Salem was filled to the brim with them. Anne knew what she wanted, took it, was willing to deal with the fallout & I think that makes her very brave & down right HEROIC in the 1600s! Josiah CRAVED his BF little sister, but his grieve & guilt over shadowed it all. He could never have Anne truly without facing the good, the bad & the really ugly of himself. I loved Anne' dad with his nurturing & caring nature & her grandma was a crazy hoot & since I know I am a crazy hoot & I totally love her! Ms. Ballance brought back Lydia & Henry, who was in the series 1st book, to help Anne & Josiah to find their uneasy way & I love an author who brings back characters with a purpose. Now like all romances, there needs to be those yummy scenes & Anne & Josiah only had 1 night of tangled lips, hands & legs, but HELLO it was 1600s, so it worked. I can't wait to read the next book in this series because it is has the spoiled & lying Abbott sister's brother in it & those girls need a slap upside their heads! Ms. Ballance wrote a sweet & slightly sizzling tale of young love in a place full of hate, superstition, lies & rumors, so this tale earns my score of 3 fingers up & 7 toes!
An Unexpected Sin was a great story that took very little time for me to fall into the historical cadence. I was looking forward to this book because I was hoping to cleanse my reading palette with something a bit different and this book fit the bill perfectly.
In this novel, we get to meet Josiah and Anne as they come together after years of separation because of a tragic event that occurred when they were teenagers. When Josiah comes back to Salem, it’s in the midst of the Salem Witch Trials where a careless accusation can cause someone their life. Any misstep could be the catalyst to an inquisition where a woman could be burned at the stake with little to no grounds for the accusation.
As Josiah and Anne start to develop deeper feelings for each other, the past eventually pulls them apart and Josiah makes a choice to keep Anne safe from the dangers of the Witch Trials. Their story is filled with believable and captivating drama, and when you couple that with two characters that are easy to fall for, I found myself captivated by their journey.
However, I struggled a bit with a few writing nuances. I don’t think I’ve come across the word verily as much since the initial BDB books by JR Ward. The extensive use of this word was a big distractor and it left me wondering how much this story could have been better with some sound editing.
Now, An Unexpected Sin seems to be the second book in the Sins of Salem series and when I was offered a copy of the book by the publisher, it wasn’t made clear. However, I feel this story can easily be read as a stand-alone and not leave the reader feeling like they walked into the middle of a conversation. I would, however, like to go back to read the first installment because the small part Henry and Lydia played in this installment had me liking them immediately.
Overall, I was in the mood for a historical romance and An Unexpected Sin was a perfect choice. It was filled with an interesting plot and plausible backstory. Well done!

Sarah Ballance’s An Unexpected Sin, book 2 of Sins of Salem was a delightful read. I enjoyed it much more than book 1, Her Wicked Sin. The storytelling was flowing; I was hooked from the first page. Reading about a young couple, known to each-other since childhood and already harboring deep emotions, IMO, was a plus point of this story.
An Unexpected Sin, though set in the dark backdrop of Salem’s witch trial, is not directly involved in it. There are instances where one or more of the characters are said to have some kinda connection to this horrid event one way or the other but the story itself is all about Anne and Josiah’s love for each-other.
Anne was a minor character in book 1, who was also a friend to the h, Lydia, Salem village’s physician. She was falsely accused of witchcraft, from which she was saved by her lover (later her husband), Henry Durham. Anne proved to a true friend, warning Lydia about the farcical accusation about her that were being spread through the town. Though Lydia left Salem in the dark of the night to avoid any further consequences, Anne is stuck here with her parents.
Anne now lives in Salem town and helps with her father’s inn but once upon a time, Salem village was what she called ‘home’. That was before her brother Samuel was lost in the nearby river. Anne and her parents’ lives have never been the same, this is the reason why they moved away from the memories to start anew. Samuel’s best friend, Josiah, who was like another member of the family, has always been blamed. It’s said that Josiah led Samuel to his death, though no one tells Anne of the true incident, least of all her parents.
Anne has had a crush on Josiah since she was a young girl, barely in her teens. Josiah is only 2 years older than her. Because his mother died when he was just an infant and his father remarried, Josiah called Anne’s family ‘home’ rather than his own. He was well-loved and always welcomed, spending more time with her family and Samuel. Anne loved those days, still fondly remembers them. But after Samuel’s death, Josiah was sent from Salem by his mortified father, never to be seen again. Anne thinks she may never see him again.
In the middling years, no man has caught Anne’s attention and she has not been in a hurry to get married, though her mother is gradually becoming more and more vocal about it. That was until one day, a stranger catches her eyes, alongside her flirty best friend Prudence’s. But Anne is ensnared by the way she finds this stranger helping out in the building of a house for a neighbor. It was not just the physical response to his attractive (and sweaty :p) body... Ok it was plain that cause at that time, Anne couldn’t even begin to imagine how her life was going to change in the coming months. When she gathered enough courage and talks to the stranger in pretense of offering him a glass of water, she finds he looks familiar. Then, he introduces himself and Anne’s world is completely altered.
Josiah returned to Salem just for this moment, to see Anne once again and to find out if she’s still single, and would have him. He wondered if he’d see anger and hatred in her eyes because of his part in Samuel’s death. He’s ecstatic to learn that not only Anne recognizes him but also, she’s not even betrothed. The next, Anne and Josiah go private to talk about what happened to him in the past few years. Josiah keeps thinking how fortunate that Anne doesn’t hold him in contempt! Sadly, he had no idea that Anne didn’t know of that little nugget of information, so she never had any reason to belittle Josiah. He had always been the man she wanted to be with, and finding him returned to Salem, claiming that he specifically came to see her, could only make her heart pound with joy. I didn’t even mind that they kiss that very day cause the yearning was just that palpable, coming from the both of them.
It doesn’t take long for the love birds to find a plan to help Josiah. Anne thought he wants to prove himself to her parents before divulging his true identity, and for her hands in marriage. His return can also mean a great deal of distress because he’d remind them of Samuel. Yet, she suggests that Josiah go to his father’s inn and ask to be hired, because a strong helper is always needed. Her poor, elderly father can’t do many chores around the inn anymore.
Against his better judgment, Josiah does just that. Being close to Anne wins out all reason. He decides he’d face it if things come to that... but to his relief, neither of the Scudders seem to recognize him. Josiah finds a place at the inn, starting as a help around that very day. Though he’s a man educated in Cambridge, Josiah doesn’t care for anything but being with Anne at the moment.
Anne is exited to find Josiah heeding her suggestion. They try spending time together, hiding away from Anne’s mother’s ever watchful eyes. It’s apparent that she doesn’t care much for him. But Anne doesn’t care either. She feels reckless and alive to have him nearby; one night even going to his room, where they end up kissing and touching. Anne’s mother starts petitioning to her father about Anne’s marriage. This makes her unhappy, so much so that a couple of times, she ends up quarreling with her mother for her rudeness towards Josiah. Anne doesn’t understand why her mother is like that around him. No matter, Anne is determined to marry Josiah and that’s that.
One day, a tragedy takes place. One of Anne’s friends, Elizabeth, was falsely accused of witchcraft and she’s hanged in front of her eyes. Feeling helpless and bitter, Anne wanders away, not telling her family of where she’s going. When she doesn’t return, Anne’s frantic parents consider Josiah’s proposal of help. He finds her and instead of coming home, they spend the night in an abandoned cottage. Anne does what she always wanted to do, seeking solace in Josiah’s arms. I wouldn’t have minded if Josiah, who was about to tell Anne of his guilt about Samuel’s death, came clean of the whole matter. But he breaks off midway and they end up having sex. This didn’t feel right to me. I already knew that when Josiah informs Anne, there’d be trouble between them. Now I knew that it’d be tenfold because of their new intimacy...
... Which it is, the very next day. Anne’s mother was more than happy to twist things in a way that left Anne confused about Josiah’s role in Samuel’s death. It was way too apparent that the woman was trying to get rid of him, and I knew it wasn’t just because of Samuel. From the conversation Josiah earlier had with Anne’s ancient grandmother, who doesn’t speak that much these days, it became clear that he harbored another dark secret; Josiah’s mother was hanged after being condemned as a witch. The whole matter was rather hush-hush. So far, Josiah thought no one else but his father, he and the people who were involved in the crime knew of it. But after this, and Anne’s angry confrontation about her brother’s death, he decides it’s best for everyone that he leaves, even if it breaks his heart. Either way, he wouldn’t stay when it’s Anne who doesn’t want him here anymore.
True to his words, Josiah leaves that very day...
Josiah was a great guy; soft spoken and overall nice. I think when he said he was true to Anne, he meant about not being with anyone else. Maybe he should’ve fought a little harder to be heard. But the fact was, he was wrecked with guilt. And if you were thinking; did he kill Samuel? In literal sense, no. I never felt he’s capable of killing anyone. What happened is this- Josiah has always been afraid of water, yet because of his urging Samuel accompanied him on that fateful day. He couldn’t save Samuel when he drowned, that’s all. I was rather annoyed at Anne’s mother, and then Anne for not even giving him the chance to explain anything. When the truth was revealed at the end, I didn’t like Anne’s mother at all. Then, Anne... they just had sex the night before, how could she be so cruel to him?
Anne, though late, realizes her fault and what her outburst and rash decision has wrought. She finds herself pregnant and no way of contacting with Josiah. She becomes desperate and leaves town secretly in search of Lydia, who also used to be a midwife.
The story moves fast from there. I knew Josiah would come looking for his Anne. He just couldn’t have stayed away. Anne was able to reach to Lydia. She starts living there for the duration of her pregnancy, with somewhat sketchy plan about her future... until Josiah comes knocking at the door. Then, it was all about revelations and what happened to Samuel and why Anne’s mother wanted Josiah away from Anne. I loved the ending because I finished the book with a smile on my face.
I know there’d be a book 3 and it made me think, could the next installment be of Samuel’s? His body was never found, so he was presumed dead. I don’t know but I’d like to find out later. 4 stars.

AN UNEXPECTED SIN is a well-written, American historical romance that provides chilling insight into the tumultuous times of the Salem Witch Trials. Amidst this backdrop, Ms. Ballance delivers a captivating tale of forbidden love, guilt and forgiveness and the mysterious past that shapes the hero's and heroine's path to love.
Anne Scudder has been in love with her brother's best friend, Josiah Cromwell, since they were children. As kids, Josiah would seek her attention with his endless teasing and then to her thrilling delight would sooth her with his stolen kisses. Her childhood happiness, however, abruptly came to a halt the day that her brother drowned and Josiah disappeared from her life.
Josiah also was in love with Anne, a love that Anne's beloved brother condoned. Believing himself to be responsible for her brother's death, however, he determines to disappear rather than cause her any pain. He tries to get her out of his mind, while he concentrates on his studies at Harvard, but is unable to do so.
Six years later, Anne is captivated by a stranger, who she discovers is Josiah all grown up. Unsure of whether Anne's family would allow him to stay if they knew his true identity, Josiah becomes a hired hand at Anne's family's inn, but never discloses his last name. It doesn't take long for Anne and Josiah to revisit the feelings they held long ago.
Then one fateful stormy night, a sister of one of Anne's friends is hanged for suspected witchcraft. Knowing the allegations could not possibly be true, Anne is devastated and wanders into the woods alone. Fearing for her safety, her parents send Josiah to find Anne. Overwhelmed by the multitude of feelings unleashed, they both succumb to the sinful pleasures that can only be had in each others arms, culminating in Anne's family learning Josiah's true identity and her mother accusing Josiah of killing her son, a fact which had never previously been disclosed to Anne. Beyond consolation, Anne sends him away, and Josiah who already suffers unbearable guilt, and has an even darker secret that could lead Anne to even greater danger, determines that because he is so in love with Anne he must leave her to protect her from further pain.
Mysteries abound in AN UNEXPECTED SIN. Is Josiah really responsible for Anne's brother's death? What is the even more devastating secret he hides (a secret which her mute grandmother seems to be aware of)? Can Anne and Josiah ever find a HEA given Anne's family's sentiments? Will Anne even give Josiah another chance after his shocking admission as to involvement in her brother's death?
I truly enjoyed this sad tale of guilt and its resulting unnecessary consequences. A sad beginning that is necessary to deliver the beautiful message in the end: forgiveness is the route to love and happiness. Not only is this a special story with a special message, but I also found it incredibly enlightening. Ms. Ballance's attention to the historical detail surrounding the events leading up to the Salem Witch Trials is fascinating and adds an interesting layer to this already entertaining story.
If you love historical romances with a story line detailing true historical events, you will not want to miss AN UNEXPECTED SIN!

An Unexpected Sin caught my attention because it was different. Author Sarah Ballance instead of writing a book about Recency England, which is the "in" setting these days, stepped out of the box and chose Salem as her setting. Salem, during the Witch Trials, to be exact.
Ms. Ballance tells a love story in a time where any behavior that is considered different is suspect. Where being prettier, nicer, wealthier can be dangerous. All it took was one envious person and you could be declared a witch. A truly scary time in our history.
Our heroine Anne Scudder tried to be a dutiful daughter but she had an independent spirit. When her brother died and her parents chose to move from Salem Village to Salem Town, Anne chose to divide her time between the two Salems. Never completely turning her back on the friends she knew there. When a friend of her brother's returned after six years away, Anne knew he was one of the reasons she had stayed.
Josiah Cromwell had watched his best friend drown and always blamed himself. After being hustled out if town by his father his shame only grew over time. But finally he had returned, an educated man, who wants only to find the lively Anne and make her his. Only her family stands in the way.
Witchcraft plays a part in this story by remaining a constant fear. Something that had to be true during Salem's witch years. Having to always conform had to be hard on a person, especially women. This was a well done story.
Another thing that caught my attention was the tone Ms. Ballance set. While using modern language it seemed like this book could have been written during that time period. It had a decidedly Hawthorneish feel to it.
A book to consider.

This is my first historical romance set in the Colonial period - more specifically during the Salem witch trials. I always thought this was a very interesting period of time. Sarah Ballance managed to capture the time period perfectly for me. The accusations flying, innocent people accused, not defending anyone for fear you'd be named next. It was a very tense period in which to live. These issues all touched the story of Anne and Josiah in different ways - ways they could have been disasterous. It was very nicely pieced together.
The downfall of this novel was the period language. I know they spoke this way, but when it was also narrated this way, it was a little rough at times. One word in particular seemed to grate on me, verily. When used in dialog it was very fitting but it was thrown in elsewhere just a little too often. The blame Josiah places on himself was a little over done and I did get tired of hearing about how unworthy he thought he was.
Overall, this was a good shot at the period for historical fiction. My issues with the book may not bother other readers at all - some may even enjoy them.

The setting of this story is set during the famous witch hunts in Salem. At that time there was so much suspicion. Anne Scudder lives in a lodging Inn that her parents owned outside the outskirts of Salem. One day Anne got a big surprise. Anne cannot believe Josiah Cromwell came back to town. With the death of her brother, her life was altered forever. Her parents never the same. Josiah carried this guilt. He knows he might never be forgiven, but he wants to claim his love, Anne. Josiah wants to built a life with her. This book is very sweet and very sorrowful tale of guilty and the need to forgive. I received a complimentary copy from the publisher thru NetGalley for an honest review.
I enjoyed the more unique time period and setting for this historical romance. However I found it a bit frustrating how repetitively the concerns of the characters were stated, and yet so much of the conflict was built around them not voicing these concerns to the others. This also made the ending, where everything is finally aired feel too forced. But overall it was a fine read, I did especially enjoy the setting and the chemistry between the two main characters. I also appreciated that the hero, not just the heroine had remained virgins, waiting for each other (not often the case in these historical romances).
This was an interesting story. When I started reading it I hadn't realized it was a book taking place in 1600s Salem, MA. (This is the second book I'm reading in Salem MA at the same time, very odd.)
It is sort of a standard second chance romance where Anne and Josiah were in love most of their lives. Josiah's mother died when he was a child and his father blamed him for her death, so he was sent off to Cambridge for school. Before he left, Anne's brother drowned and Josiah was blamed and blamed himself for the accidental drowning.
Josiah comes back for Anne and pretends he's not the person that grew up in that area - most people actually recognize him but don't say anything. Meanwhile standard Salem witch hunting is going on, which really made this a different story. Not only were women pressured in the same ways as many other centuries to marry and obey their husbands, but there was always the looming worry that someone would decide that you were a "witch" - accuse you, and no one could defend you or they would also be deemed a witch.
When Anne discovers her friend is being hanged, she seeks her out, and Josiah is sent to find Anne. They spend the night together. Meanwhile Anne's parents don't like him, she doesn't know he "killed her brother" and also that his mother had been hanged as a witch.
The bulk of the story is Anne and Josiah trying to be together while clearing up any miscommunication between the two and also her family. So the last 1/4 of the book is just Anne's mother telling the story of Josiah's mother, Anne's brother, and basically justifying her treatment of Josiah the entire time. That was a weak part of the story - all of a sudden Anne's mother can solve all the issues in the story, she had known everything and has no good reason why she kept them apart? I liked the background of Salem in the 1600s but the writing overall didn't really flow well.
Really enjoyed this novel. Like the last book, I felt one or both characters made some silly decisions in the end, but easy to overlook as a minor problem. As a whole, I was really impressed by the story. I love the time setting. Also appreciated how the actions and language felt true to the time period. Even the smallest of details felt authentic. The background of this couple was more in tune with the tropes I traditionally adore (I've love you for years, forbidden love, first lover for both protags, etc) so I have to say I enjoyed this more than book one.
ARC REVIEW OF AN UNEXPECTED SIN Colonial Salem BLURB: The moment the stranger's dark eyes meet hers, Anne Scudder's world is immediately overthrown by chaos. REVIEW Having read the first book in the series I was quite enthused to receive a copy of An Unexpected Sin.This story took place during the time of the Salem Witch Trials. This was a very dangerous time in history where persons had to be very careful as the least appearance of the unusual could result in one being accused of witchcraft. An Unexpected Sin tells the story of Anne Scudder and Josiah Cromwell. These two were close friends since childhood, however due to tragedy in the Scudder family Josiah was forced to leave Salem. After several years of separation, Josiah decided to return home with the intention to make amends with the Scudder family and to Anne as his wife.Josiah’s past is shrouded with secrets. A secret which could cost him his life and the life of those dear and near to him if it were to be revealed and one that could lead him losing Anne. I found him to be lacking in faith as he doubted that he would not be able to be with Anne. Anne on the other hand was upbeat and very optimistic about their relationship. What I liked most about Anne is that her belief in Josiah never wavered. The author’s portrayal of the characters makes it easy for one to empathize with them and to understand why they believed they had to do the things they did.An Unexpected Sin is a poignant story of love, separation, secrets, guilt, forgiveness and healing. The lessons to be learnt from this story are :Painful secrets can destroy lives and cause emotional and physical pain. You should not blame yourself for someone else’s decision. We each have to take responsibility for our own actions and decisions.I enjoyed this story from beginning to end. Review:
I know I probably said this when I reviewed the first book in the series, but I really do love that this is set in Salem in the time of the witch hunts. I think the witch hunts, and the paranoia add a perfect backdrop that adds to the drama and tension to the story. The authors attention to the detail of the time period is excellent and really helps you relate to the characters and the time period.
Even though this is the second book in the story, if you have not read the first book yet, you will not feel lost. The author does give us references to things that happened in the first story and we do get to see the main characters briefly in this book. The weaving in of Lydia and Henry into this story is perfect and makes sense.
Josiah and Anne are friends and at the beginning of young love when tragedy strikes and Anne's brother, Samuel is killed and they are ripped apart. Josiah and others blame him for Samuel's death, so when he comes back to Salem after years of being away he tries to hide who he is, except with Anne. The young love that was there all those years ago is still there and blossoms into a deeply passionate, forbidden love that culminates in a night of love and passion. Secrets and accusations lead Anne to send Josiah away when her family learns who he really is and her mother hiding her own regrets accuses Josiah of killing Samuel. Without giving away parts of the story, Anne is forced to run away and seek Lydia's help. Once Josiah and Anne are reunited, they go to Anne's parents where all the secrets and fears of the past come out. I loved the ending and thought it was perfect for the story.
This is a well written story, that is worth reading and getting immersed in.
An Unexpected Sin is a book that breaks new ground by reinventing the old into something new. A tale of forbidden love between a woman and her brother’s best friend, two tropes that have been used before but the difference is setting the book in a tumultuous period of American history. The Salem Witch Trails, a period that is rich with history which is not a common setting for historical romance novels. Something that I’m disappointed about a there so much to explore with the genre and something that this author does beautiful with this novel.
The people of Salam are scared especially the heroine Anne Scudder who friends are some of the very ones who are being persecuted and is fearful that her actions are ones to be questioned. Attracting the attentions of a stranger in Salem maybe something she should of thought about but she drawn to him. There is connection that is drawing herself to him, a invisible one that should stay hidden. As it something that could be potentially dangerous especially in a time that where every movement, action , figure is questioned and nothing is safe.
Josiah the hero is not who he think he is. He a local who went away after the incident that shaped this book. His story entwined with the main plot of this book which I had regrets over as it over shines the Salem trial aspect from his story as there is a heartbreaking story there that shapes the trope of forbidden love and shapes the novel .
I’m hesitant to give this book a higher rating. It a cause where too much is going on as a result of all the guilt haunting them from the past . The combination of the two tropes in this setting is clever bit of writing and I’m admit I could easily get lost in her worlds if some of the themes and details were toned down a bit .
I admire this author for taking a leap with this series and setting a historical outside of England and this book is well written with a story about rebuilding life after a tragedy that has torn the hero and heroine apart .

I keep trying historical romances because I have friends who swear by them but I don't know- I just can't get into them. Maybe it's the dialogue, maybe it's being chaste but wanting to really let go anyways, I don't know. One thing that did get me to stick with it was the secondary story line of witch craft in Colonial Salem, something that I've always found fascinating.
The story centers around Anne and Josiah. Anne loses her brother to a tragic incident years ago. Josiah, her brother's best friend and the man Anne loves, is essentially banished because of that and his own mother's death, he's believed to be the reason for both. Fast forward a few years and Josiah returns and their love story picks up from there. Anne wants nothing but Josiah, but Josiah fears that once her parents know his true identity (because he's working for them now but they don't recognize him), they would never give their blessing for Anne to marry him. Never mind that Anne is fearful of the witchcraft accusations so she needs to be careful in her own actions. Also add in Anne's grandmother who essentially doesn't speak but periodically says random and cryptic things to Anne and Josiah, and Anne's mother seems determined to not let Anne figure out what's going on. We, of course, do find out what the grandmother is alluding to and I kind of pieced that together as the story went on. Not all is what it seems and that's OK.
It's not the greatest romance I've read, but as far as historical romance goes it's fairly solid. If you are a fan of historical romance, you would likely really enjoy this one.
I received a complimentary copy of the book for an honest review.
I found the story quite simple in regards to the previous one of the series, it was a straightforward, uncomplicated and had a more light hearted tone which I think made it charming to me.
Josiah was honest and true to his feelings as well as Anne, which I found pretty refreshing since most stories are twice as lenghty as this one and the main characters are constantly denying their true emotions. However, since the beginning of the book they both know each other's feelings and have no qualms speaking between themselves about it.
The shadow of the witch hunts still looms throughout the story, though not as heavily as the first book, and plays, even if a minor part, and important factor in some of the choices the characters make.
I think that by the end of the story what you truly learn from this story is that guilt has a way to manifest itself, in all kinds of forms, even to hinder the possibility of something beautiful to bloom. It also shows you how humane it is and how humans themselves are the ones that bring a meaning to it, illogical or not, everyone has their own way to cope with it.
I also liked the cameo appearances of several characters from the previous book.
If you are looking for a story with an uncomplicated and straightforward plot, with some romance, and honest characters this is the book you should read.
Sarah Ballence did an excellent job of stepping outside of the box, and writing an engaging historical romance set in Salem during the height of the witch-trials, not a time or place that was well known for it's romantic atmosphere. In addition to setting the story during an interesting time period, she also managed to weave mystery into the plot.
When Anne first lays eyes on Josiah, she's instantly attracted to him. She also gets the sense that she know him from somewhere, though she can't figure out how. It's quickly revealed that in addition to being the best friend of her late brother, Josiah was also Anne's childhood sweetheart. The years haven't dimmed the attraction. It doesn't take long before the pair decides they want to wed. There's just one problem, convincing her parents to approve the relationship which won't be easy since everyone thinks Josiah is responsible for killing Anne's brother
The chemistry between the two characters is fantastic. It's impossible to not want them to end up together. Even more impressive is how smoothly Sarah Ballence was able to weave her research into the storyline. She did an excellent job of showing how unfair the accusations of witchcraft were, and how every person in Salem was affected in one way or another.
Although there are times when readers will have to suspend their sense of belief, all in all, this is a very enjoyable story. Personally, I hope Sarah Ballance continues to return to this time period in future stories.
An Unexpected Sin, the second book in the Sins of Salem series, is set in the time of the Salem witch hunts and speaks to the bleakness of the time and the care each person had to take to avoid being unjustly accused of witchcraft. I like learning more about this time period, even though I find it upsetting at how little it took to be accused. The author’s research and attention to detail is very apparent.
Josiah has returned home, after six years, seeking his childhood friend, Anne. He’s loved her all this time and can only hope she returns his feelings. But he has secrets and as the story progresses, we learn others have secrets, too. I love the air of mystery the author created with all the secrets woven into the story.
I truly enjoyed Josiah and Anne’s journey, experiencing the joy of their love and the difficulties they endured right along with them. In my opinion, this book offers the reader a rich and beautiful love story.
Even if you haven’t read the first book in this series, you won’t feel lost; An Unexpected Sin works well as a stand-alone. I can’t wait for the next book in this series, ever hopeful that the instigators receive their just reward. I find Ms. Ballance to be a talented writer, regardless of genre, and look forward to reading her work for a long time.

Such a sweet, heart-breaking, and ultimately heart-WARMING story. And being that it is set during the Salem witch trials, with the examples of human treachery and evil those brought forth, such an endearing story was certainly unexpected. I am not ashamed to admit that I had *tears* in my eyes at the end.
Anne and Josiah were once very young and in love, until the tragic death of her brother tore them apart. When they are reunited 6 years later they are destined to pick up where their hearts left off. But Josiah is haunted by more than his guilt over his best friend's death...there is an even more dangerous secret that can hurt them.
Pros: Sweet story with passion just simmering below the surface. It brought back characters I adored from the first book (Lydia and Henry) and more fully introduced Prudence (who I'm head over heels for and needs her own story ::hint hint, nudge nudge:: lol) Again surprised by a twist...BUT this time I was looking for it! After reading Her Wicked Sin, I knew that there would be something just as unanticipated waiting in this story.
Cons: The Abbott sisters and Rebecca Mathers STILL didn't get their comeuppance in this book! That just means there is going to be a story where they do get it, right? RIGHT???
This love story of Anne and Josiah is poetically beautiful and tender. Set in the time of the Salem witch trials, these two have been separated by the death of Anne’s brother. After six years, Josiah returns to Salem to find Anne – the woman he’s realized that he cannot live without. When Anne discovers that Josiah has returned, her heart starts beating again and she’s desperate for him. But things are tricky for the two of them, as any strange behavior is suspicious and can cost them their lives.
The historical aspect of this story is wonderful. The author has done a fabulous job of portraying the danger that followed the people during this very dark time in history. And to incorporate such a passionate romance is a creative way to paint the need for something extraordinary amidst a time of such terror and sadness.
From the moment I picked this story up, I knew I wouldn’t be putting it down until I finished it, and that’s exactly what happened. It was a wonderfully written story that I enjoyed immensely. And while this was my first experience with a book by Sarah Ballance, I can assure you, it most certainly will not be my last.
An Unexpected Sin was a sweet, young love story set in one of the eras in American history that we are ashamed of -- the witch trials in Salem, MA.
Josiah Cromwell has returned to Salem after years away, following the death of his best friend, Samuel, brother of Anne. Fraught with guilt for young Samuel's death and packed off to school, Josiah dreams of being reunited with Anne, Samuel's younger sister whom Josiah fell in love with.
Anne sorely missed Josiah after he left when her brother died. She not only lost her brother, but she lost her good friend and love interest, too. Josiah must prove his worth to her parents when he returns, but how does one beg for forgiveness for an accidental death?
The story is sweet and romantic and you cheer for Josiah and Anne. You'll furrow your brow as the grandmother keeps saying cryptic things and it's only at the end where the truth comes out.
Will Josiah and Anne be together? Will they have her parents' blessings? Will we finally understand what that grandmother has been uttering?
Another great read by Sarah Ballance. This is book two of The Salem Series and can be read as a stand alone. Anne and Josiah were teens in love when Josiah was forced to leave by his father, leaving behind Anne who was devastated to have just lost her brother - Josiah's best friend. 6 years later Josiah returns.
Emotions run deep with these two. Their love goes through a roller coaster ride leaving you breathless. This is a multi pov read (the best kind in my opinion hehe) and did not disappoint. I would have loved the story to be longer though and more in depth but all in all it was a good read.
The dialect did not throw me as much as book 1 did. The story line was good and the characters easy to love. Now we need a book with Prudence. I think she is due for her own book :)
I was glad to see mention of Lydia from book 1 but would love to have seen more interaction with her and Henry.
All in all, 2 thumbs up and I am looking forward to reading more of this series in the near future.
An Unexpected Sin is a young love romance set in and around Salem at the time of the burnings of witches by the Puritans. It's the story of Anne Scudder and Josiah Cromwell, who had been infatuated with each other from a young age, then struck by a common tragedy and separated, and reunited six years later as Anne became of marriageable age.
The plot kept me engaged from beginning to end as their passion was rekindled and faced obstacles to being together. Anne had a strong and feisty personality for being a Puritan at that time and place and Josiah was willing to do anything to be with her. Through the author's pen, I experienced the fears, sadness and woes of the witch trials as the burnings hit close to home for the characters.
I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys reading young love novels. I enjoyed it and I'm in my 60s.
A heart-warming story about young love, separation, tragedy, loss, family, forgiveness and reconciliation. The story of Anne Scudder and Josiah Cromwell - childhood friends with a crush that spanned years of friendship. After being separated for many years find themselves reunited in less than ordinary circumstances. Chance meetings and fate threatens to tear them apart again. The Author portrays their story well that has you sympathising with the characters as well as question the characters choices they take throughout the book. A good story that keeps your interest throughout the book. 3.5 Stars *ARC received from the Publisher for an honest review.
Another great story told in Salem during the witch trial times... Anne was a girl coming into the age where she would be ready to get married... Josiah was dealing with the thought he was responsible for his best friends death 6 yrs earlier... His heart always belonged to Anne... Anne was always in love with Josiah who was her brother's best friend... 6 yrs after Josiah left he comes back in hoping to be with Anne.... there are a lot of twists and turns with this book that will have you guessing and wanting to know answers to ...
3.75 stars I really enjoyed the relationship between Anne and Josiah! They have many obstacles to overcome, mainly Josiah's own issues and Anne's family issues. They have that forever love that always makes for a nice read. :) They were sweet in my opinion, especially the way that Josiah is with Anne. She is daring and one of a kind. I liked the secondary characters as well. I hope that Prudence gets a story with the man that I think will be popping up. ;)
Another amazing addition to this series. A second chance romance that has to overcome lies and deciet. Anne and Josiah fell in love at a young age, Josiah had to leave town but 6 years later comes back to redeam himself and reclaim the love of his life. Again we take a mildly known historical event and give it life. Ms. Ballance has done a fantastic job of bringing history and the puritan ways to life. Well done!
I've read book three, hoping to see a book for as I love the characters
This was the first book I have read by this author and I enjoyed it. This story had an array of things happening throughout the book that kept my attention. It had suspense, mystery, tragedy, loss, and romance all of which had me flipping through the pages until the very end and I wasn't disappointed to find the happily ever after I anticipated :)
Another great read by Sarah Ballance! I find her writing style fits perfectly with the feel of Colonial Salem, and her characters are believable. It was another great love story, with all the twists and turns that Ballance is known for! I'm not sure how many are planned for this series, but I look forward to seeing what's next!
