The fourth installment of the critically acclaimed Super Human series
The defeat of the near-invincible villain Krodin has left a void in the superhuman hierarchy, a void that two opposing factors are trying to fill. The powerful telepath Max Dalton believes that the human race must be controlled and shepherded to a safe future, while his rival Casey Duval believes that strength can only be achieved through conflict.
Caught in the middle is Lance McKendrick, a teenager with no special powers, only his wits and the tricks of a con artist. But Lance has a mission of his own: Krodin’s ally, the violent and unpredictable supervillain Slaughter, murdered Lance’s family, and he intends to make her pay.
For fans of Steelheart and The Avengers, Hunter is an action-packed superhero story that is hard to put down.
“No one writes superheroes as good as Michael Carroll. With Hunter, Michael takes his flawed, all-too-human superheroes to the next level. One of my favorite series.” —Michael Scott, author of The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series
Michael Carroll has this habit, I think it's down to him being a comic book writer as well, of making his books as plot-twist-y (yes that's a word) and gripping as possible. Hunter, the 7th book in the series (excluding the short story collection) is in my opinion one of the best books in the series, along with Sakkara and Superhuman. It is about my personal favourite character Lance Armstrong (or, as he later becomes known, Hunter Washington), and the story seen in Stronger, the previous book, told from his side of the story. It is about his interaction with the various characters, such as Maxwell "Max" Dalton (what a dick), and how he - Lance/Hunter - is more awesome than he seems at first - which is an impressive feat in itself, believe me. This book is made more amazing if you've read the previous books, by what it means for the rest of the New Heroes Universe - with things like Lieberstan and Mystery Day - and so I suggest before you read this book, you read the rest of the series. This is a series that you must read if you are into sci-fi/fantasy, there is no question about that. This book is just fantastic, and IT'S LEFT ON YET ANOTHER FRUSTRATINGLY TANTALISING CLIFFHANGER DAMMIT WHY DO ALL OF MICHAEL'S BOOKS HAVE TO END LIKE THAT??? I have been left theorising by the end of this book, waiting on edge for the next, and if nothing else would like someone else to join me in that. READ. THIS. SERIES.
This book had a lot of action in it, but it was not my favorite because it was kind of nonstop. It would go on and on and did not really keep me hooked for long periods of time, leaving me to stop and re-read the chapter so I could understand what it meant.
Lance, who changes his name to Hunter, breaks off from Max Dalton's group of teen superheroes and goes it alone. He joins up with a traveling circus group where his powers of persuasion and his ability to execute plans come in handy.
Since this book focuses almost exclusively on Hunter, it's a bit different from others in the series. There were some jumps in the setting that I wish would have been designated with section headings rather than just chapters as it was a bit confusing.
Hunter By Michael Carrol It is an action/ adventure novel and is the third book is a series of four. This book is about Lance McKendrick a super hero with no real super powers. He lives in a world where there are super heros and super villians that have an array of deadly and amazing powers. After a deadly battle took place in the first novel, lances brother and parents were killed. He sets out to take revenge throughout the novel. He eventually encounters and tracks down the person who kills his parents. Does he enact his revenge or not? Read this awesome book to find out. This book is written in first person. It is written in the mind of one character, Lance McKendrick . It has suspense, action, some romance, and funny parts throughout. The tone is somewhat serious but there is lots of comedic relief throughout. This is noticeably written towards teenagers as there is suggestive material throughout. I liked this book a lot. I loved how it mixed comedic moments with serious moments as well. It really balanced out the book. I also loved how there was plenty of action throughout the book as well as moments of suspense. Overall, I would say it was a really good book, but it wasn't perfect. I would recommend it to any fan of the Avengers. I would recommend it for anyone over the age twelve. The main character was very relatable. Not really in the sense of us having similar problems but in the sense that we are very motivated and we always fix our problems. He could have easily just let his parents death hold him down and prevent him from helping others; but he chose to find and confront who did it. I often found myself laughing throughout. But at the same time I also found myself feeling sad and sorry for Lance. One of my favorite parts of the book is in the beginning. Basically there is a huge fight scene where one of the villians attacks a group of young heros. The fight lasts a while and it was full of action and comedic parts throughout. I thought it was a really good way to start the novel as it kept me on my feet and made me want to read more. This book is one of my favorite books in a while and I recommend it to anyone who likes super heros.
I don't know if there is another series of books that I can visualize so clearly, so long after reading them. I must've read Carroll religiously as an adolescent.
I remember his older books as being a lot better than Hunter but who is to say that they really were. I don't think I'll reread them, I like the memory of them enough as it is.
Really loved this book. Best book in the series from Michael Carrol by far. Loved the way he portrayed the life of a non-super hero. The human side of the entire series really shows through and makes me really think of what I would have done in the same situation. Very invested cant wait to read the next one
3.5/5 Similar to Stronger in a lot of ways, but Carroll did a much better job driving the plot with Lance. Whatta character, love seeing him get the best of everyone.
When did Abby gain the ability to fly?? forgot to bring that up last book.
By the time I had gotten to the 2nd book in the Super Human series, I was convinced that Michal Carrol had created a dang good superhero story. Now, by the end of the series, I can say that he has unquestionably made one of the best superhero stories EVER. And I don't say that as an exaggeration, it's a fact. My half-in-depth review contains spoilers, so, in case it wasn't obvious, *SPOILERS!!!!*
The specifics of the story are many, and too much for me to go over in detail. Basic premise is that Lance Mckendrik, the hero from the first 2 books(Book #3 takes a sidetrack for those who have not caught up yet) is going after Slaughter, the villain who killed his family. He escapes the manipulative clutches of Max Dalton. Let me just say right here, that although I see a lot of people raging about how much they hate Max, which is understandable considering how much of @$$ he is. But I think he's one of the many things that make this book great. Carroll explores the ramifications of what a telepath could do in the world of politics and businesses. Not only that, but Max's viewpoint of justice isn't exactly "wrong". Should extreme measures be taken against threats that, if left unattended, could cause massive damages? Should the metahumans rule or serve the human race? It leads to some surprisingly in-depth discussions in the story, which was often the highlight of my readings.
Back to the plot.
Lance runs away, and ends up at the circus. No, that's not a joke. And as silly as it may sound, the plot remains at the circus for probably half the book. And although I won't go into too much detail, I will say that this is the point where we see a lot of who Lance really is(ironically, by pretending to be someone else), and we get to see him find a family he can trust. He grows in skills and knowledge, and becomes a character who you can really get behind and cheer for. Eventually, he must move on(a rather sad moment, if you ask me), and long story short, ends up working under Max to find Cassedy , the super-smart villain set out to do....something(I haven't read the Quantum Prophecy, so I don't know if his plans are talked about in those books. It's definitely not talked a lot about in the SH series.)
Eventually, he leaves, and from there I'd rather not say any more, cause it's a WILD train ride after that!
So in conclusion, Hunter has left me both a little sad that the series is ending, and satisfied. I'm glad I picked up a copy of Super Human during a garage sale, as it led me down a journey that was incredible. Full of staples of the superhero genere that I could easily latch onto, along with amazingly well written characters, and twists and turns around every corner, Hunter manages to finish off the series with a bang. Although I know a sequel is in the works, I know it won't focus on the characters I've grown to love in this series, and that makes me a bit sad. <:) But I'm glad I was able to read it, and pass it on to others. If you haven't read the Super Human series, I command you, to go and read it right now. It'll be one of the best reads of your life.
Also, by any chance, whatever happened to Krodin? We know he's not dead, did he do something in Quantum Prophecy?
So far, this book has been exceptionally good, and has a lot of fun, and not all action and adventure. I can't wait for what else this book has in store for me.
I don't know if the writing quality has deteriorated or I've gotten older - or both. I found it really difficult to get into considering 1) it's been ages since I read the last one and I no longer know who all these characters are...except Paragon. I like Paragon. How could you forget Paragon???!! and 2) there's all this exposition I don't have any feeling toward. Oh except I remember that I like Brawn, poor kid. Hate Max. Who's Lance, again?
Hunter by Michael Carroll is a story about the same super humans of his other book Superhuman except this time it is about Lance's experiences after his second book The Ascension. This is the third installment of what is now my top 5 series. In this book we learn more about Lance, my favorite character in the series. In this book we learn that Lance's main goal is to get revenge on Slaughter, the villain who killed his family, and how much Max deceives everybody around him, and my god it that a lot. This book is packed with action and comedy cover to cover. Some of the ways Lance tricks people is absolutely hilarious. We meet new characters and Lance makes new relationships. This book shows what super humans do from a humans point of view.
I loved this book. I felt that this book was the best in the series it addressed many questions and built up my favorite character into a cooler character. Lance from the beginning of the series had a persona that made me like him and that evolves even more throughout this book. I liked a lot of things in this book. I like how Carroll evolved certain characters and relationships and how he made circumstances which weren't to hard to believe. The only problem with this book for me was that I read it too fast and have to wait for the next book. I really can't think of anything bad about this book. It draws you in from the beginning and it is a book you wouldn't want to put down until you flip the last page.
I would recommend this book to any fan of the superhuman series and the series to anybody who likes superheroes and action. This is a serious page turner and a great book. Hopefully Carroll will come out with the next book soon because of how good this series is.
Lancelot finally learns to live up to the potential of his name only when he changes it. Starting over in a new life as a conman floating from town to town looking for vengeance forces Lance to grow up. By the time he joins the carnival, Lance is Hunter Washington. He uses what he has going for him and even gets some training that puts him on the same level as his super human friends. He becomes a man and one to be reckoned with. He ends not with darkness but light.
re-read: Lance does start out his usual self, but as Sol points out; he doesn't laugh anymore. He is constantly trying to evade Max and yet, the annoying git always knows where he is. Max recruits him back for a 'think tank' of people with abilities like himself, protohumans. He seriously regrets finding a way to get rid of Max and not using it for it's full potential, but simply as a plan to capture Ragnorak and Slaughter. He also discovers that his 'love' for Abby was forced by Max and then those romantic feelings towards her go away. He finds a girl with the circus whom he likes and even has a night with before he leaves for Max and then to build his own team and fortune. He helps to form the Cloister, which is the mine where Brawn is *see Stronger book for details*. He even berates Max to the point that Max starts to open his mind, admit to his wrongs, and apologize (in his own egotistic fashion). A fun book that twists and turns*so frustrating* until the reader is so wrapped up in the current Hunter that they start to lose Lance as Lance himself has done.
Hunter is a fiction novel written by Michael Carroll. It is safe to say that the sources for his inspirations are the depths of his imagination and his fantasies. For example in this series nothing is normal, from super powered beings flying around while fighting one another and demolishing whatever terrain became their battleground. His intended audience is kids in middle school whose imaginations are in over drive and who have common interests and similar fantasies. Kids whose imaginations are practically taking them away. I say this because the book is very detailed with rich characters with an unending range of abilities and uniqueness. The purpose of the novel was to feed these kids imaginations and to entertain. For example the high action and twisting story will keep anyones mind going for a while, such as "who betrayed who" and "who wants revenge." I personally felt constantly sucked into this book. Even to an extent where I finished it in a day and a half. I have read all the others in the series and after I finish one, I always have the same reaction. I want more. The time between the releases is like eons waiting a just trying to imagine what Michael Carroll will do next. In my opinion this series, among a select group, is one of my favorites ever to come to my knowledge and I will always love it.
So, full disclosure I've not read the Quantum prophecy series, which this super human series is supposed to be a prequel for, so there may be more connections and foreshadowing in the story that I'm not aware of.
I read this book in a single day, which isn't normal for me, but I was on vacation and i really enjoyed the pace and development of the story. This story follows the same format as the previous book in the series, Stronger, in that they focus on one character over a long period of time. I thought both books were very well done, and in the case of Hunter develops one of the more interesting characters into someone fully realized. This read a lot more like a spy book than a super hero adventure, which was appropriate for the character.
I'd recommend this to just about anyone, but reading the other books in the series would probably provide a more well rounded experience than taking this on as a stand alone book.
1st of all I HATE MAX DALTON! 2nd I still hate Max Dalton. 3rd this book was freaking fantastic! I've never been very vocal while I read books, but this one made me laugh out loud, and scream, and gasp, and growl in anger whenever Max. Freaking. Dalton. Came into play. 4th. I hate Max Dalton more than Umbridge. That's right. UMBRIDGE. 5th I NEED THE NEW BOOK NOW!!!! Can anyone remember a Lance or Josie in the original 3 books? Because I can't for the life of me. And I NEED TO KNOW! I was just casually going along, assuming this was the end, sentimentally saying my goodbyes, and then THAT! Gah!
Hunter was amazing! I have always been a fan of this series but Michael Grant really took it up a notch on this one. From the cover, I assumed that the book would focus on Abby and Slaughter. But that was just a minor story. The real focus was Lance who changed his name to Hunter. He attempts to get away from Max Dalton who is up to something. The book follows Lance over the course of 13 years. It is a lot of changes for one person. It is also really great to see how this book ties back so much to the Quantum Prophecy series. I can't wait to see what Michael Grant will do next in this series!! Wonderful end to the prequel portion!
The characters are very 3D, even the secondary aren't even flat. All the characters have a very distinct personality. I like how the author moves the time line, speeding up Lances life so he doesn't stay fourteen, but ages and grows more mature. As always the action sequences are superb, very clear and easy to read. Fun read, couldn't put it down.
It's a book about Lance McKendrick. Who's he? Well you need to read "Super Human" and "The Ascension" first. Anyway, ayos lang naman sya. It's better than "Stronger" which was about Brawn. But I hope the next book wouldn't concentrate on one character. Three books nalang to complete the Quantum Prophecy series, so sana wag sayangin. At sana mas maging maganda pa.
"But we don't get to stop. We don't get to say, 'Well, I've done my share of helping other people. I've done enough.' Because it's never enough." [p.356]
Just I can't even explain the character changes and how beautiful the story arc was. It all comes together so nicely with the New Heroes and just wow. I picked up the entire series on a whim and now I just want the next book. Lance was such a great character and I hope we see more of him. And Roz. Preferably together. Max Dalton needs to leave forever because he is the most frustrating character ever I'd say. The plot is so artfully weaved together that some bits just seem inconsequential and then it all adds up. I look forward to rereading the series probably later this year to be honest....
I'm sad this book had to end. I cared so much for the characters and so wrapped up in the plot that I was unable to put this book down. Hunter is my 2nd favorite character after Brawn and his journey is fascinating. The action scenes were amazing as usual and the passing of one character in particular really upset me. It sucks when good people die before their time. Bravo Mr. Carroll. You are a master.
I really enjoy Carroll's Super Human stories, and Lance has been a favorite character. I was excited for the book and raced through it. I liked it, but not as much super human activity as I was hoping for. Still great tale of Lance/Hunter and a good bridge between Super Human and Quantum Prophecy.
This was so good. Lance is definitely my favourite character of the series. The story finally went forward and he was a fantastic lead. I loved every single part of this, it was all very interesting and dynamic. Truly looking forward to what happens next.
I LOVE THESE BOOKS! I can't wait for the next one. Lance is a great character and i enjoyed his story. I love all the superhumans and their powers and names, there are so many but it's never overwhelming. 5 stars!
I always love reading a book by Michael Carroll because once I start I any put them down. I can't wait to see how the series ends an how the information from this book changes their world.
