This is why I don’t like being up to date on unfinished manga, because now I have to wait months to find out what’s next. I’m probably going to start reading the novels, as they have more information and are farther along. I’m too impatient and invested now.

It’s spooky season, as Maomao is dragged to a ghost story gathering that could prove rather haunting. Then it’s hunting season, but Jinshi might be the one in season if he’s not careful. And at least one cat will be out of the bag, courtesy of a frog in the pants.

One of the most perfect manga ever made continues without a foot put wrong this volume, opening with a very fun set piece and then segueing into a little bit of action for its back chapters. It makes it all look so easy, and so gorgeous.

The ghost story chapter might be the best spooky story exchange that I’ve ever read in my life, just because it manages to blend the series’ shrewd main character and canny use of science with just a touch of the unexplained.

I wasn’t sure where things were going when Maomao was acting weird, but instead of the shoe I thought would drop, the other one dropped instead and it turned the whole thing into a fantastic little tale. The climax and payoff to this one are note perfect.

Everything else here is in service to the hunting trip that Jinshi is invited on, which forces Maomao to reckon with his actual position in the royal household after all this time. Even she can’t miss that things are off with how he’s being treated.

Except, well, we learn (or are reminded) that Maomao is being willfully dense because she doesn’t want any more complications in her life than are strictly necessary and anything involving palace intrigue is firmly in that category. So her ignorance does make sense.

This is subsequently a problem when Jinshi is targeted and the two of them are forced to flee for their lives in the face of some new-fangled technology, of a very common sort, and they wind up a little closer than usual.

There’s a lot of fun banter in the midst of all this, including a dramatic (and funny) revelation that maybe Jinshi’s a lot more… put together… than the average eunuch. And the romantic intent would be hard to miss, unless, again, you were Maomao.

Combined with some very clever plotting and counter-plotting, I do think this is the smartest manga on the market right now, it all adds up to, well, all the brilliance of previous volumes. It’s astonishing how utterly consistent this series is.

5 stars - nope, not a single hair out of place, which is more than can be said for Maomao and Jinshi. The balance it strikes between every single story beat, emotion, explanation, and whatever else is smothered in such beautiful artwork. Delightful.

To była bardzo ciekawa część tej serii. (xD)
Piękna okładka i też mam wrażenie, że tym razem było o wiele więcej takich pięknych kadrów w środku.

Fabuła poszła w rejony, których się nie spodziewałam. Mieliśmy sporo seksowniejszych ujęć i wątek z żabą to był taki *face palm*. Mega się uśmiałam przy tym.
No jestem naprawdę ciekawa, co będzie w kolejnym tomie.

I really enjoy this series when it’s centered around Maomao solving mysteries and being around the other court ladies. I don’t enjoy the Jinshi story at all and don’t understand if I’m meant to root for it when he has no concept of boundaries? It’s not cute to me at all.
