Read (and I can't stress this enough) only if you are a huge fan of the Green Lantern title.

description

The high point of this one is that you are definitely getting your money's worth out of volume 5.
The low point is that it's loooong, somewhat rambling, and filled with more of the same boring shit we've seen for years.
Evil aliens want to rule over the universe!
They've infiltrated the corps, made the Green Lanterns look like douchebags, and are an ass-hair away from a total takeover.

description

Meanwhile, GL morale is at an all-time low, because (basically) every planet in the universe is working with the Bad aliens to destroy the corps.

Spoilery things happen and the Green Lanterns emerge victorious!

Ugh. I can't.
I mean, seriously? Do I even need to do a proper review of this one?
Nobody cares. Even I barely care anymore. It's just blah, blah, blah, alien names I can't pronounce, blah, blah, blah, fight with other superheroes, blah, blah, blah, fight with aliens, blah, blah, blah, question what your life means, blah, blah, blah, win the day with some ridiculous scheme you pulled out of your ass.
I literally felt nauseous mid-way through the book, when I realized I still had another bjillion pages to read.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!

description

Ok, here's the thing. It's not like this is horribly written or poorly drawn. It just that there is nothing interesting about these guys anymore. They used to be kick-ass space cops, and now they're just whiner-babies. I don't care about the politics of every fucking random planet. I wanna see Hal save the day & whack shit with giant green fist constructs!
Fuck! Is that too much to ask?

I'd say I'm done with this title, but we all know that won't happen...

Oh My Lord, I thought I would never finish this thing. I started out enjoying the green lantern story and now it's the same thing over and over and this was painful to get through. This planet moving around on its on is weird and how would that work. It's silly.

There are these shape shifting things that make the Green Lanterns look bad to the universe and they aren't very popular. The Shape Shifting race is trying to power up and take over the universe. They get pretty close too. There is also a stupid twist at the end. Gag.

I see that these things can shift in one volume. I sure hope this story can flip before the next one. I need a break from the green lantern world. It will be a while before I get Vol. 6. I am not a fan of this part of the story. All I can say is, what happened to this story?

Man was I surprised by this. I'm not sure if it's just because of how bad some of the Green Lantern books have been lately or what, but this story was a home run for me. The whole source wall and emotional reservoir thing seemed stupid to me. I don't get the idea that emotions are supplied to living beings rather than generated by them, but whatever. This book moves past all that, but managed to make it a worthwhile plot point. The best part is that there's a villain that makes sense. Venditti finally gets away from Relic and the First Lantern and all of that crap to give us a race of monsters with a plan and a real endgame.

One thing that made me hesitate is the fact that without the supplemental issues (the volume includes issues from the main Green Lantern series as well as Red Lanterns and Green Lantern Corps) the story would not have made any sense. Maybe some, but not much. The really important thing, though, is that DC actually included all of these issues in a single volume! It takes you through the whole narrative. Hal finally stops acting like a tool and gets his head on straight to help the corps get back on its feet.

Plus there are some really cool lanterns that I don't remember meeting before. Gorrin-Sunn is particularly neat, and I love the idea behind his race. Two-Six is growing on me, too. Kilowog, John Stewart, and Guy all get some nice moments, too. Even Salaak wasn't unbearable in this one. This is a huge volume with a lot of characters and an engrossing plot. The art is a little hit or miss for me. I don't personally care much for Billy Tan's work, but he did a lot better in this volume than the last. Martin Coccolo really knocked it out of the park, in my opinion. Bernard Chang was excellent on the GLC issues, too.

Honestly, this was another volume that I went into expecting it to be a final nail in the coffin, but I loved this volume. If you like Green Lantern, this is one of the best stories they've had in a while.

Good news / bad news here.

The good news comes in several forms. First, it's a step up from the super-bland Lights Out crossover, of which we shall not speak, for fear of falling into a Coma of Boredom. Also of the good is the fact that this volume is actually well collected, with the story pulling issues from GL Corps and Red Lanterns, making for a smooth reading experience. Bravo! It's about time, DC. Billy Tan's art is also goodness, with his take on the world of the Zezzites (you can tell it's alien because of all the Z's) being particularly well realised. The colour work by Sinclair & co is also as vibrant as you'd expect from a GL title. I also admit to being charmed by the little Zezzite droplings (that sounds so rude now that I have written it down...), and enjoying the final issue, where Hal & his bro down some alien beers and talk emotions.

The bad news is that this is mostly punch-up-the-baddies stuff without much else to speak of going on. Characters are largely one-dimensional, wanting to either smash up the universe or grab for power or blah blah blah. Very forgettable stuff.

Overall this was a passable space adventure, with more good than bad on display. That said, I can't mark it up any higher because of how forgettable the whole affair was--which is a surefire sign that something essential is still missing from Venditti's run.

I realize that the author is trying to build drama, but turning Hal Jordan, the greatest Green Lantern of all time, into the most inept Green Lantern is very hard to buy and is rather painful to read.

I kept putting this down and forgetting about it for long stretches of time, if that tells you anything about this book.

Long, boring, and ultimately pointless.

Robert Venditti has had five volumes of Green Lantern to change my mind about his writing and he has yet to do so. It's the only DC comic that I read thinking about the good old days when the other DC titles were floundering about.

There are three main problems with Venditti's take on the emerald space cop firstly that his stories are now constantly framed in the context that the light of the Green Lanterns is killing the universe thus diminishing the focus on the main conflict of the individual arcs, second the arcs are boring and finally character design and art is appalling.

So the light of the Green Lanterns kills the universe, a very interesting premise and a conflict between lanterns choosing not to use their rings is intriguing however all of this is rendered moot when Hal and some lanterns continue to ring-sling. This topic is brought up less in issues perhaps due to the fact it constantly undermines the plot.

The arcs Venditti has written so far focuses on the Clann and the other war-like races that wish the Lanterns dead and the names besmirched throughout the universe. This started off as an intriguing story however the execution is simply clumsy making the story a paint-by-numbers event with a ho-hum conclusion. Geoff Johns stories had dozens of characters and were fun, space exploring adventures and its simply sad to see the state this once great title is in.

Finally the art-an artist is nothing without a good inker and colourist and boy does this hold true for Billy Tan. His artwork is simply ghastly to look at, the characters and action sequences are bland, bland, bland. Also the design of the characters makes any fan of the Johns era cringe. The Johns era was filled with unique characters each distinguishable from the other but with Tan's designs each looks like a variant of a basic humanoid design with minor costume changes to tell them apart.

In conclusion, DC needs to revisit the Johns era to revamp this title to is once former glory. Not even the best Venditti story holds a candle to Johns weakest story and I do not say that lightly.

Lets face it, Any writer to pick up Green Lantern after Geoff johns historic run had some big shoes to fill. I know many fans are nervous about the changes Robert Venditti is bringing to the GL universe. Change is often hard to except. These characters have been around for a long time so you have to be willing to take risks with the storytelling. I was not a fan of the Relic arc but this arc was amazing. It really felt like the empire strikes back of Robert Venditti's run thus far. I love the idea of the universe not loving its cops. Lets face it this hits close to home. We are often intimidated by those at time who are sworn to serve and protect us. But the hero doesn't stop protecting just because there is no love from those he protects. Robert has set a large challenge for our space cops and has place a large burden on Hal Jordan especially. What I loved about this book the most is that our heroes must not win with just might but they have to earn the universe's respect. Billy Tan's artwork is hypnotic and can not be contained on the page. The New God cutscene at the end has me so excited. New Gods Vs. Green Lanterns! Epic!

In space, no one can hear you yawn.

This was dull as ditchwater. It read like a two-part Stargate episode or something similar. The author puts a pin for the most part, in the whole "using our powers hastens the end of our universe" dilemma and moves on to a tepid 'event' involving galactic warfare. A shape-shifting race has taken Hal Jordan's form and sent out a message to all sectors announcing the Corps' supremacy and tyrannical plans to rule. Many lanterns had been replaced by these aliens. They're in league with another species, blah, blah, blah...
The only interesting moment for me was the last issue, where Hal gets a visit on Mogo and gets to a share an alien brew with his bro. Other than that...zzzzzzz.
Oh, and, why the hell does Hal bother generating a domino mask in deep space among friends? Makes absolutely no sense.

This was long-winded and too expository with major pacing problems. If a certain long-lost character didn't make his sudden, surprising return when he did, I probably would have given up on this super-sized (read: tooooo loooong) volume.

As a whole, this volume is good. It has an interesting story that will be memorable and is a good result of the effects of Lights Out. On the downside, it just drags on too long. This whole plot started in the previous volume of GLC, then continued through several semi-crossed-over issues before finally getting to the six-issue crossover itself. At half that length, it would have been great.

Red Alert (28). This Red Lantern crossover looks like it'll be of notable importance to the Red Lantern comic, but is much more irrelevant to Green Lantern. It's good to see the Guy/Hal connection, but that's about it [6/10].

Prelude to Uprising (27, 29-30). The first issue in the collection (27) sets up the whole Uprising arc with some nice drama and some good material on the state of the universe; overall, the new Green Lantern comic does a good job of offering up the big picture. The latter two issues (29-30) feel more like treading water while waiting to get to the Uprising, but they nonetheless have some strong character moments, including a (nowadays) rare view of Hal as a person, not just a Lantern [6+/10].

Uprising (31-33x2). The actual Uprising arc was bady needed to kick this whole story into high gear. For too long before it, the Lanterns fought meaningless skirmishes with the Khunds and Durians, resulting in a unfortunately overinflated storyline. Uprising finally brings things into perspective with six issues that have major plot points in every issues. The resolution of the conflict is strong (if obvious), the final issue ending is great, and the promise of things to come is intriguing as well. [7/10].

Incursion (33). A nice little coda and foreshadowing, but that's as much down time as Green Lantern ever gets nowadays [6/10]

I have a few structural complaints with this volume:

After reading the four issues of this volume, after having recently read the start of GLC volume 5, I was really shocked how similar the two comics are nowadays. GL is pretty much Hal and the Corps, while GLC is John and the Corps. Meanwhile, the plots seem to be flowing back and forth pretty freely. I can't help but think that the universe would be served better by the two comics being differentiated, but lacking that, they really should be acknowledged as a single narrative (like Superman was back in the '90s) and collected as a single narrative.

Speaking of collections, it's nice that DC didn't give us another fractured crossover, but wholly duplicating a six-issue crossover into two different volumes is bad too. It's really not that hard to map out collections so that crossovers fall between them, but DC seems intent on NOT doing so, apparently because they want to have (nearly) complete collections of all their Nu52 titles. It's bureaucratic stupidity that either harms the actual stories or (as is the case here) makes readers buy the same stories multiple times.

Since this shares so much similar issues to Green Lantern Vol 5: Test of Wills, there will be a section that's the same dealing with UPRISING and also some about the corps centric issues.

World: The was all over the place, some of it was kinda nice, but the Durlan origin issue was simply fugly. I also don't like the red panels for action, it's not my thing, I don't feel it at all. That being said the colors and the sense of motion and the power of the rings were displayed wonderfully. The world building was wonky at first and then solidified in the end. After Relic in the last arc and the splendid world building that was present there I found the Durlans, Khung and Clans to be...zzz. However as the Durlans took center stage the story got better and by the end the world building was fun and fit the story well. The world building in terms of this Hal and the GL main book was good, I liked the building for the fallout to Lights Out which I think we need to read more of but then Uprising happened.

Story: Let's talk about Uprising and then the rest that was more Corps centric. I really found the beginning of that arc to be wonky and janky and underwhelming. Relic was a great villain and I would have wanted more time to deal with the fallout but man we jumped right in Uprising so yeah the start was not great. The series did pick up speed and by the finale with the wall and the ocean and the fight was great. It's was simply and bombastic fun. It's not super memorable but it was fun in the end. The specific parts for the GL main book were also good. I really liked the Hal stuff and him try to be a leader, more fallout for Lights Out please. The status quo has changed and it's good to read about and explore that area. The end was also made me smile.

Characters: There was a bit of character development here and there but this was mostly a war book and characters act they way they should and that's that. The new members for this book I really enjoyed and I like it when we get a little change up to the cast which makes for more stories and more development. It's great that the cast is so huge.

A good and solid story that had a choppy ending but still being a follow-up for Lights Out was bound to be a bit of a disappointment.

Onward to the next book!

Geoff Johns is a staple in the DC Universe. His run on Green Lantern got me back into comics but also gave me a new favorite superhero to cheer for. When his run ended, I was worried that Green Lantern would lose his light and become just another dim and boring superhero. Thankfully, Robert Venditti keeps the light shining bright.

First off, this volume is meaty. Like, really. There's so many issues compiled in here that it's quite the adventure to take on. And, yes, it is a boring slog at times, especially in the first few issues (seriously, there's too much dialogue). I noticed in the later issues of the volume that the pace picked up significantly. Part of that is because the conflict was reaching it's climax but even in the aftermath, things clipped along nicely. That tells me that Venditti is learning.

But something that's odd about this volume, and it isn't new to comics, is the art changes a couple times between issues, with one issue changing artists mid-book. It's one of the things I hate the most that DC does from time-to-time because it really breaks the immersion. Hopefully this doesn't happen in the next volume.

I also felt that they could have compiled the issues better to have a more cohesive story. I realize this is the Green Lantern run but some issues from Red Lanterns and Green Lantern Corps really should have been included. -SPOILERS AHEAD- Now I'm left asking how John Stewart was captured at all and what happened to Supergirl after she shows up as a Red Lantern. Maybe this was a choice by DC so you felt the need to buy the other issues/volumes of their other books but I'm not the kind of consumer to do that; either give me a full and complete story or suffer points off the review.

I may be in the minority on this but overall, I really enjoyed this volume and look forward to reading the rest of Venditti's run. Even if I am really behind on comics.

The art is very pretty and every once in a while there's a fun scene. The book is thematically and morally incomprehensible, but in such a bland way you might not notice. I'll be honest, the most interesting thing I found in here was the picture of a random girl someone had tucked into the pages of my copy. I wouldn't call it a waste of money if you bought it on sale. I also wouldn't not tell you that there are better comics you can spend your money on. Overall, just skip to Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps.

A shape-shifting race impersonates Hal and broadcasts his intention to police ring-use to reign in the draining of the Emotional Spectrum. The universe revolts, starts killing Green Lanterns, and the war is on. I must say, the war was a little lacking for my liking. Though that may have more to do with these collected editions only including parts of the story. There are way to many Lantern titles; GL, GL Corps, Red Lanterns and so many more.

One thing I love about the GL Corps is how many non-pedal aliens there are; Gorin-Sunn is living energy (who's race resides collectively in a lake, which reminded me of Odo from DS9) and B'ox a, wait for it, living box. That one is a little done in cheek but so many space-going sci-fi stories use only bipeds that I'll take it!

I also liked the development of Mogo, too. Having a living planet ties your hands insofar as conflicts go but I thought it was handled nicely here.

I enjoyed this volume more than the previous. This time the conflict was not of the "ending of the universe at least", and is not an omnipotent menace. This time is a shape-shifting species who's purpose is to conquer the universe (at least is not destroying it). The menace was real, because they can infiltrate in the Corps and control every planet.
I didn't see that endig coming, it really surprised me, to be honest.
The art of this book is so good, specially in the GLC issues.

Nieco lepsze ukazanie całego konfliktu powstania z punktu widzenia Hala i głównej serii, niż w przypadku serii "Corps". Mając ciekawie poprowadzone postacie na pierwszym planie nie zastanawiałem się nad nonsensem tego całego problemu ze zmiennokształtnymi, i czytało się te kilka zeszytów dobrze. Fakt faktem, reszta objętości zdublowana z wydania "Corps".

I liked this storyline a little better because it's got some deception while a war is going on, not just punching. Durlans and Khunds teaming up to try to defeat the Corps. And the idea of "why we fight" and "should we fight" is a nice thing.

Good continuation from the previous volume and fixed the problems I felt in the previous volume. This book made sure to include the issues of Red Lanterns and Green Lantern Corps, which filled in the gaps in the plot and were integral to the overall story. The art was beautiful to look at though felt a tad rushed in some panels. The writing from Venditti was fine, wasn't terrible but wasn't extraordinary. I liked the premise of shape-shifters and war on the Green Lantern front, just felt it was dealt with relatively easily. In fact, the very last issue revolving around John Stewart and Fatality were more exciting compared to how the war concluded. Still a fun time though and I do recommend it. Grade: B-

This has been one of my favorite GL stories since Geoff Johns Sinestro Corps War. What I liked about this was that it was an actual war in space without the focus being on the many colored lanterns. The Khunds and Durlans attack and it works. How the Corps works to defend the universe was done really well. There were well done twists and a complete arc. After the last couple arcs, I was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed this. I thought Venditti and Jensen did an incredible job with the plot. I could have done without the Red Lantern section and I thought the book was probably two issues too long. The art was good to great throughout. Overall, a super solid war book.

2 stars. This book makes me angry. The conflict that takes place here is completely contrived, and it is over by the time you close the book, only to introduce a new threat at the end.

Its boring. It's not canon, to me.

There are about 3 cool things that happen, and the rest of the book is annoying. No i dont care about the arbitrary moral issues that you set forth. Especially because the whole of it is predicated on the white lantern being dead, while we know he isnt.

So all of this bullshit fighting and bemoaning is moot.

You can use your rings as much as you want for a billion years and then restart it like you did last time.

Did they explain that at all? No.

This is good but would be much better if it included all of the story from GLC that is relevant - Van Dagger comes out of nowhere , build up to the jail break and the heart breaking finale with John and Yrra.

Still good but could be much stronger. They had the right idea with what comes next in Godhead.
