Watanuki just can’t seem to get a break. Whenever he makes efforts to spend time with his beloved Himawari, he’s given an excuse—or worse yet, he ends up alone with Dômeki. But when Watanuki finally gets a little more quality time with the girl of his dreams, he comes to discover the reason behind her constant avoidance and personally experiences the disastrous consequences of getting too close to her.
CLAMP originally began in 1989 as a twelve-member dōjinshi circle, but by 1990, the circle had diminished from twelve to seven. Of the remaining seven, Tamayo Akiyama, Sei Nanao, and Leeza Sei left the group during the production of the RG Veda manga. Other former members of CLAMP also included Soushi Hishika, O-Kyon, Kazue Nakamori, Yuzuru Inoue and Shinya Ōmi. Currently, there are four members in the group.
In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.
In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.
This volume made me incredibly sad by the end. If what Watanuki suspects is true, it’s both incredibly shocking and depressing. Oh boy.
This installment started out fairly lighthearted. There were plenty of incidents with Watanuki and Himawari who eventually reveals WHY she is so sus. Watanuki, who is of course still in love with Himawari, makes us aware of the fact that he still loves her and supports her no matter what. I thought that was so sweet of him. Watanuki is growing even more kind and selfless as the volumes move forward too. He’s changing as Yuuko said he inevitably would. It’s so nerve-wracking even though I’m already privy to the ending.
I can’t wait for the last 3 to arrive so I can binge, but I’m also AFRAID 😭.
The plot is thickening and I’m worried. The reveal about Himawari and the arc about her was surprising and engaging. The chapter featuring Fox Spirits was adorable. But then volume 12 happened...
Snapshot review: things are beginning to ramp up and it’s staying mysterious while being oddly reflective. it’s interesting to reflect on watanuki’s growth and to see how far everyone has changed in their own ways. it’s endearing and also slowly nerve-wracking as things are clearly ramping up in tsubasa world.
watanuki dream hopping is happening with an alarming frequency that even his friends are commenting on. it’s both cool (i love how they transition the panels from dream world to reality and back), and dangerous because watanuki potentially doesn’t know what he’s walking into at any given moment.
his and yuuko’s relationship has really grown in a way i love. she’s really grown softer over the volumes and his pressing her about wanting to grant her a wish if possible is both endearingly sweet and slightly ominous. what could be yuuko’s wish????? hmmmMmmMMMMm…
When I'm reading Xxxholic, I love Xxxholic. When I'm not reading Xxxholic I never reach for Xxxholic. It's so weird because the story is so strange and fun to read but maybe my mind thinks there's too much going on unless I'm in it. Idk but it keeps getting better and better.
This was a lot. To be expected with three volumes in one. Sakura made a bigger appearance and it looks like things are gearing up to end. Yuko seems regretful. Watanuki is caught between dreams and reality. Between that, Himawari finally gets found out, leading to both her and Domeki entering the shop. Jealous pipe fox was still the highlight. Felt sorry for Kohane, the mother was awful. Still curious what choices the other side made but nope.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
From time to time, people end up denying the things they cannot comprehend, the things they cannot grasp. They label what doesn't fit in the world they personally wish for as bad things. Even though it's ok to say ''I don't understand'' if they don't understand.
I'm offering the same preface I did to my other omnibus reviews: Writing reviews for xxxHolic is a futile sort of thing, because it's a story that, in all honesty, is greater than the sum of its parts, which I do actually mean in the best way I can. It's just, the gut punch that is this series requires the build up, requires the many moving pieces slowly fitting into a solid machine of grief and longing and bento boxes (and by many moving pieces, I don't mean the plot events related in Tsubasa--those are the number one reason I never authentically recommend this series for others, as it makes no gotdamn sense thanks to the the Tsubasa crossover arc). Also, reviewing is difficult, as I am completely unable to be objective about this series. So what's going to happen is I'm going give a rough review of what happens in each omnibus and how much pain it's going to cause, strictly so I can remind myself later when I'm trying to remember what events happen where. As such, spoilers abound.
Omnibus #4 contains volumes #10-12. Pain hits hard here. While it opens with a regular shop job, volume #10 is largely the window arc. The truth is revealed about Himawari, things get even messier for Watanuki and Doumeki, Watanuki is once again made to realize an easy life is not for him. And there's still two volumes to go. Volume #11 is a bit of a reprieve with a shop client, but the arrival of the dreaded Doumeki egg is upon us, and there are signs things aren't what they should be at the shop. Dreams begin playing a bigger role by volume #12, in ways that are not particularly fun to watch. We're starting to see the beginning of a steep decline in Watanuki's grip on reality. He realizes there are important things he doesn't remember. Events happen that seem a bit too surreal to be taking place awake. xxxHolic has always been a story that begs the question of, "What, if ANY, part of this story really happened?" But by this point in the omnibus, Watanuki is now growing aware of that question himself, and it isn't easy. Tensions are also rising with Kohane and her mother. It's not maximum pain just yet, but it's a solid 8.5/10.
Like it's counterpart, Tsubasa, xxxHolic is also ramping up by this Omnibus, though perhaps not as dramatically. We learn more about Himawari-chan and the mysteries surrounding her, and Kohane-chan returns with more background as well. The plot surrounding Watanuki gets pretty intense at times, and the world of Tsubasa becomes even more prominent and connected to the series.
I really enjoyed the development of Watanuki. Almost 3 years have since passed since volume 1 (if I'm counting my seasons right..maybe it's closer to 2.5, but I swear we've seen winter three times now) and he has definitely grown. Yuko has changed as well and became softer. Even Domeki's hard edges are rounding out a bit. But the plot is definitely gearing up toward something big and, if Tsubasa is any indication at this point, it's going to be intense.
I love that we get to check in on Sakura too since she's pretty much out of the picture in Tsubasa (for now, anyway). The last volume is a little confusing. Things start getting Inception-y, so I'm hoping that clears up in #5! Onward we go!
The story is certainly starting to become more serious and the plot is thickening. There are still some lighthearted parts that are really endearing. Questions are starting to be answered and suspense is still being built up for whatever is to happen to Watanuki.
There's more involvement with Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE, Vol. 1 which I expected it to become more intertwined eventually. There's still a note that you don't *have* to read Tsubasa to fully undertsand xxxHOLiC and as of right now I'm sticking with that and only reading xxxHOLiC.
This series is getting crazier and crazier. I'm starting to really like Kimihiro Watanuke a lot more compared to earlier volumes. Just some of the encounters he has and how he is willing to help others whether human or spirits is admirable. I wish that Watanuki would get along more with Dōmeki honestly. Especially with how he helps him so much. Seeing him accept Himawari-chan after what she told him was really nice to see in my eyes.
Contains volumes 10, 11 & 12. And the stories become sadder and sadder as the manga reaches its final third and all the puzzle pieces start falling into place. Oh, Watanuki...
I'm enjoying the general direction the series is going, and lots of intrigue is building in this volume. I preferred Omnibus 2 & 3, but I appreciate the stakes raising in this volume.
A phenomenal series. Going in an interesting direction with this installment. I'm excited to finish this series off and see how it ends. The art is still my favorite of all CLAMPS series. It's honestly one of my favorite art styles of all time. Totally worth the read and I highly highly recommend it.
I know I've already said how beautiful the artwork is, and how wonderful the story is in this series. So, ditto for this one as well!
You could hold a real deep book club conversation with all the philosophical topics that are brought up in these books. In fact, I wish I could talk to others reading this series, or those who have read it, because there is just so much to say, so much to interpret, and so much to admire.
