About the author

Hiromu Arakawa (author: 荒川弘) is a Japanese manga artist, best known for Fullmetal Alchemist (鋼の錬金術師 Hagane no renkinjutsushi).
Her real name is Hiromi Arakawa (荒川弘美).

Arakawa was born and raised on a dairy farm in Hokkaidō.
She thought of being a manga artist since she was little. After graduating high school, she took oil painting classes while working on her family's farm. During that time, she also created dōjinshi manga with her friends and drew yonkoma for a magazine. After eight years she moved to Tōkyō and started out as assistant writer for Hiroyuki Etō.
Her debut as manga artist is in 1999 with STRAY DOG. In 2001 she started working on her famous and award winning series Fullmetal Alchemist, that soon gets a successful anime adaptation.
Other works include Silver Spoon (銀の匙 Silver Spoon, Gin no saji Silver Spoon).

цей том був товстішим за інші, але не менш цікавим
тут більше про самих Елріків та історія про те, як саме Едвард став «Сталевим Алхіміком»
основний сюжет не надто просунувся, бо том переважно складається із флешбеків, але так я більше дізналась про персонажів і ще більше їх полюбила
це круто 💫

This is definitely the best volume so far. The backstory of Elric brothers, only hinted at before, here is finally told in all its gory and lovingly polished detail. It gives the brothers the much-needed depth, and lets us see beyond the angry/insecure and yet competent and determined facade that Ed shows to the world.
I also really enjoyed the character of the teacher - she's absolutely great, unexpected, and confounds expectations in the best possible way. Also, I love how a very short exchange between her and Ed shows so cuttingly clear both her mysterious past and the sameness of their shared, unwanted desire, guilt and experience.
A small vignette concerning Riza Hawkeye is also highly illuminating and showcases Arakawa's skill at complex storytelling - apparently unrelated conversations suddenly show her actions in a new light.

Eh bien, toujours aussi parfait. Un personnage nous quitte déjà et cela m'a attristée - quelle injustice. J'ai été très touchée par l'incompréhension qu'il y a momentanément entre les deux frères... 🥲 Et contente de voir un peu plus le personnage de Winri. Elle est très drôle.

Mention spéciale pour l'histoire bonus à la fin avec le petit chien trouvé dehors sous la pluie (et le chat aussi haha).

What are ethics to children? You can tell them it's wrong but what's wrong with loving your mom so much you're willing to do anything to see her again? It's a tragedy because there's nothing more relatable than wanting to see someone who's passed on. It's a story about grief, humanity, trauma, and family (plus many other things). I love this series so intensely I'm unable to be objective about it 😂

Also, I would die for Izumi Curtis

tập 4 về tập 4 về. Thực sự rất thích cái cảnh hóng chờ từng cuốn từng cuốn, rồi háo hức đọc như này. Bộ Thanh gươm diệt quỷ hấp dẫn quá nên đã đọc 1 lèo (thaạt ra vẫn chờ từng chap cuối), chứ bộ này kiên nhẫn chờ 2 tháng 1 cuốn nè.

Cuốn này đi sâu về quá khứ 2 anh em, cũng như xoáy sâu vào câu hỏi: có nên hồi sinh người chết hay không? Cuốn sách, cũng như nhiều truyện khác, quy về khái niệm như thế này: thế giới này luôn chuyển động theo 1 dòng chảy vĩ đại, con người sinh ra hay chết đi cũng nằm trong dòng chảy đó, vì vậy, không được hồi sinh người chết.

Nhưng theo mình, những tác phẩm như kiểu chàng Orpheus cứu vợ rồi không thành ấy, nó thiên về hướng mô tả sự vĩ đại của cái chết, sự nhỏ bé của con người trước quy luật thiên nhiên.

Cơ mà nếu con người có thể hồi sinh người chết, thì sự hồi sinh ấy cũng là tuân theo quy luật tự nhiên mà thôi. Vậy thì đấy đâu phải là lý do cho việc không nên hồi sinh người chết?

Fullmetal Alchemist es un manga que empieza muy bien. Puede que la trama no esté llena de sorpresas, pero resulta interesante gracias al gran manejo del ritmo, pues entre las escenas de acción la historia descansa, por lo que los personajes tienen espacio para reaccionar, establecer dinámicas y desarrollarse. Hay humor y momentos serios, magia molona y sentimiento. El dibujo es bonito y la historia resulta fácil de seguir. Unos cuatro primeros tomos que introducen bien el mundo y el tono de lo que vamos a encontrar.

Flashback. Sebagian besar isi volume ini adalah menengok asal mula kondisi Ed dan Al. Kebahagiaan masa kecil dan kematian ibu mereka yang membuat mereka terobsesi untuk menghidupkannya kembali. Pertemuan dengan Izumi yang menguji Ed dan Al di sebuah pulau tak berpenghuni, hahahaha... keren melihat perubahan mereka dari yang penakut sampai lincah melawan si sosok misterius.

Bagian paling trenyuh, sudah pasti, saat mereka melakukan transmutasi 'ibu' dan menyebabkan mereka harus berwujud besi. Saat Edward nodong tombak ke Fuhrer... Wohoo

Sicuramente il volume migliore sino ad ora, ho amato alla follia il lungo flashback sull'infanzia dei fratelli Elric, la perdita della madre, il loro apprendistato e il terribile incidente per il quale hanno perso tutto.
Sono due personaggi meravigliosi e questo manga è davvero fantastico!

If you write a story with young children as protagonists and don't irreversibly scar them and/or traumatize them throughout the course of your story, were you even trying?

This volume expands on some of the events immediately before the opening pages of the series. We learn why the boys became so interested in alchemy and what the boys went through to master alchemy at a young age, as well as who taught them to become capable fighters: Easily the greatest housewife in all of fiction, Izumi Curtis.

While this volume is mostly just back story that at times feels out of place in Volume 4 of the series, the backstory is captivating from beginning to end and answers many questions that have been building up throughout the series thus far.

You're so not cute.

Winry helps deliver a baby while Ed and Al sit around completely useless at the start of Fullmetal Alchemist Volume 4 of the Fullmetal Editions and it's wonderful. Of course, I live for the Ed and Winry moments. These two are just so darn adorable together, even when in serious conversation. You can't help loving them together.

The Flashbacks

Falling in line with Ed and Al moving on to meet up with their alchemy teacher, Volume 4 is the flashback section of the story. This is where we learn about their parents, specifically the mom who motivated much of what got the boys to where they are now. We learn about their childhood, how they developed an interest in alchemy, and how Ed joined the military.

Any questions about their backstory are basically answered here. You also learn about all their time with Teacher, Izumi Curtis. And, of course, the darkest bits of the boys' past is revealed: the full story behind how Ed lost his limbs and why Al is bonded to a suit of armor. It's devastating and gruesome, but still manages to be intriguing.

Thus the only secret left to be unveiled is one they don't even know the truth about themselves. Neither Ed nor Al could shed any true light on the secrets of their father.

Exceptional

I will likely be forever impressed with the brilliant way in which this story is told. The intricacies of the plot and the depth of the characters is incredible. Arakawa does such a fantastic job of weaving the complex lives of these characters together to build a cohesive and exceptional story. And you can feel it in every page of this volume.

This has always been a series that really shows the potential of manga: beautiful illustration work, plenty of action, great characterizations, an overarching mystery, and just a lot of heart. This fourth volume includes a lot of what we were waiting for: the previous history of the Elric brothers and how they came to the current state.

Story: After Winry helps deliver the baby, the brothers set off to meet up with their former teacher Izumi. But there, memories surface - of two boys desperate to learn how to bring back their mother from death and the terrible price they paid for that hubris. They did heavy training with Izumi to learn alchemy in and out, eventually catching the attention of the military. At the end of the volume, we see Elric become the Fullmetal alchemist.

It was great to see more of the past since so much wasn't explained until this volume. As well, we are introduced to all the main characters in Ed and Al's life - from Winfry and her grandmother to izumi, meeting Mustang for the first time as well as Hawkeye. It makes for some great reading and still action packed despite being set in the past.

In all, beautifully presented and a great read. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

Another amazing character introduced in this novel. We finally learn and see the history of the Elrics teacher, Izumi. I also loved how she brings in more lore, and she is someone that connects to the characters in a way we haven't seen yet.

Most of this is a flash back novel. And I think the series has been very well paced to occur at this time. I think the way it transitioned to the past was also very well done. In general alot of how the panels were done in this volume/edition looked and felt great. It had some of the best humor in its panels. Most of them were "montages" so you got little bits of fun and cute moments.


With most of these novels, the humor is always right along side the drama and the pain. And we finally see how they lost their bodies. This was all amazing, and horrifying. It answers some questions, but gives alot more! I feel like overall this was a really good time to bring in their back story, I like how we didnt start with this back in volume one. The story, characters, humor and plot structure has earned all these volumes a 5 star so far!

Si algo me ha gustado de este tomo es que la serie no se pierde en volúmenes y volúmenes hasta desarrollar los orígenes de los personajes, sino que ya en el cuarto tomo, y tras el flashback del primer número, tenemos la historia de los hermanos Elric.

Fantásticamente contada, tenemos un volumen conmovedor y lleno de grandes momentos que hacen de Fullmetal Alchemist uno de esos mangas capaces de desarrollar un sistema de magia, plasmar la relación de dos hermanos, hablar de la inevitabilidad de la muerte e incluir duelos a muerte. Como debe ser.

Un tomo en el que vemos el pasado de los Elric y el inicio de su relación con Izumi Curtis, su maestra. Este es el primer acercamiento real de mis pequeños con la alquimia o al menos con su significado, luego de aprender las bases con los libros de su padre, Al y Ed encuentran con su camino a esta mujer que es capaz de transmutar obviando los circulas, cosas que veremos después en Ed y que este tomo explica muy bien.

This volume of FMA explains the origin story of Ed and Al, which in my, humble, opinion was done excellently! FMA just gets better and better with each volume, and while I’ve already watched Brotherhood, this story never ceases to amaze me.

Що можна сказати про мангу, яка є основою для улюбленого аніме серіалу (навіть двох його варіантів)? Це прекрасно. Єдине що розчаровує - періодичність виходу, бо якби всі частини з'явилися з друку одразу, я би став банкрутом, проте не виринав би зі світу Алхімії доки не перегорнув би останню сторінку останнього тому. Видання від Nasha idea чудове. Чекаю з нетерпінням продовження.
