Sweet Escape by Meredith Wild and Jillian Liota
Hawthorne Vines series #2. Contemporary romance. Best friend’s brother troupe. Can be read as a stand-alone.
After her ex cheats on her, which makes him an ex, Vivian Walsh goes to her friend’s family vineyard to get away and focus on writing music for her upcoming album. Vivian doesn’t plan for a new relationship, but Memphis is simply good yummy to resist.
Memphis is busy running the vineyard and restaurant though his father hasn’t officially passed down the family business. Memphis doesn’t have time for a distraction but Vivian is teasing and tempting beyond his ability to resist.
Passion and fun turn to feelings. At least for one of them. Should it continue beyond her stay at the vineyard?

Steamy interludes while the characters go through some self assessment.
I love the joking between them and the laughter.

I received a copy of this from NetGalley.

Sweet Escape is an enemies-to-lovers, one night that turns into more, family saga, upcoming star is born kind of book. There's a lot going on and I liked the characters and specifically Vivian and Memphis's journey. I did find at times that I skimmed to the good stuff, but the authors did create a vivid back drop and I could see it all and feel a part of the scenery. I love the sibling dynamic and I'm curious about Murphy and her story and what I hope will be Micah's story in the next book.

Vivian and Memphis may have just become one of my favorite couples. I thoroughly enjoyed their flirtatious banter and nonstop bickering whenever they were alone; to my surprise, even the vineyard business intrigued me. To be honest, I hoped the story could put more emphasis on Vivian and Memphis' relationship instead of how to run a family business but since it was about this spectacular vineyard, restaurant, and winery all-in-one, which I was quite unfamiliar with, the entire book was still a delight to savor. Meredith and Jillian's writing was flawless and I simply couldn't put this book down. What a perfect way to wrap up my reading 2024! Lastly, just a little tweak to the dedication in the beginning, this book would never be TOO MUCH for the right readers!

This was my first book by this romance author duo and I liked it. As the second book in a series, it still worked as a standalone. It had spice, emotional depth and strong character development and the narrators were good too, making the audiobook an enjoyable experience. Would definitely recommend to fans of authors like Laura Pavlov or Samantha Chase. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early audio copy in exchange for my honest review!

This book was short without feeling too short. Sure the actual story takes place over two weeks, but I felt like I really got to know both of the main characters. Their relationship was very insta-lust and usually I’m not the biggest fan of that but it worked here. Both the characters were very focused on their careers, him trying to save his family winery and her an aspiring musician. The fmc is only in town for a two week period before she has to go back to LA to record music, but she finds that spending time with the mmc is the only thing giving inspiration to write her songs. Because they are both so focused on their own careers and her set date to leave they agree to the friends with benefits arrangement. I liked how things played out with the story and didn’t finish the book thinking that anything felt too rushed.

When I started this one I didn’t expect to fall in love with these characters so easily like I did. This book was one of those that you immediately connect with both of the main characters in different ways right in the beginning.

The male main character was A TRULY BOOK BOYFRIEND: looks grumpy and it’s indeed the most protective, loveable and sweet man! Ugh, it’s annoying how perfect he was - I was on my knees for him!

Vivian, the female main character, was one character that I immediately relatable to - and her questions about herself, her insecurities about being in love and all of the relationship thoughts she had were super relatable.

This story was basically SO GOOD, especially if you love brother's best friend, small town and all the moments that will make you giggle and kick your feet!!

It’s such an easy read and I couldn’t recommend it more so, please, please, please, pick this on!

I enjoyed this romance with our forward and fun female main character Vivian. The way she dominated the beginning of the relationship with Memphis had me giggling and cheering her on. The two of them when they got together were on fire! They had so much chemistry that I felt it oozing out as I listened to the audiobook (discreetly turned down at times while the kids were around!). I can't wait for the next installment in this series.

thank you netgalley for this arc in exchange for an honest review ✨

Vivian is a singer / songwriter who has travelled to Rosewood for some song inspiration and to see her best friend at her family’s vineyard. Memphis is trying to resurrect his family vineyard, feeling the weight of generations of Hawthornes counting on him to pull the vineyard into financial stability. Memphis has no time for the beautiful and sassy Vivian, but Vivian persuades him into a physical agreement in order to keep her creative juices flowing.

honestly? this book bored me. there was soooooooo much talk about the vineyard and Memphis’ struggles at running it and bringing the business to a good place financially and the fact the vineyard has been in the family for generations and the first born son always inherits the vineyard blah blah blah blah blah 😑 there was nothing else of substance to Memphis as a character and it quickly became painful to read.

Vivian initially just irritated me, her immediate dislike and rudeness to Memphis for absolutely no reason was completely childish and unfounded. she very quickly got over it and under him and continued to get under him for the sake of her song writing and good orgasms. there was next to no chemistry between Vivian and Memphis, it was all physical and even those scenes were quick, vanilla and boring.

the plot was predictable but some of the dialogue created the occasional redeeming spark but it didn’t last. maybe i’m biased as i tend to read more fantasy and dark romance, but it just bored me, i only finished it through pure stubborn determination for a No-DNF-vember 🤷🏻‍♀️

Jillian Liota and Meredith Wild have created a heartfelt, swoon-worthy story in the second book of their Hawthorne Vines series. Sweet Escape effortlessly blends instant attraction with a slow slide into something much deeper, all while capturing the thrill of a vacation fling.

Vivian Walsh is a free-spirited singer-songwriter nursing a bruised heart who finds solace and inspiration at her best friend Murphy’s family vineyard. What she doesn’t expect is her attraction to Murphy’s brother, Memphis, a workaholic with the weight of the winery’s finances on his shoulders and an infuriatingly irresistible charm.

Their chemistry is electric from the start, and watching their “no strings attached” arrangement bloom into something more is pure magic. I love how Vivian is clear about what she wants and goes after it. Memphis has no chance against her captivating allure! *I might have a slight girl crush on Vivian.

The authors skillfully balance lighthearted banter, sizzling tension, and emotional depth as Vivian and Memphis navigate their personal struggles and undeniable connection. And while their time together is fleeting, they challenge and support each other in a way that feels like they’ve been together forever. Vivian’s vacation inevitably comes to an end, and I was not prepared for how emotional I was about their “goodbye”. It all works out beautifully in the end, though. That grand gesture!

Hawthorne Vines and the small town of Rosewood are the perfect backdrop for Vivian to rediscover her muse. Errol and the Firehouse Inn are my favorite new additions. I loved seeing Murphy, Wes and Sarah again. More is revealed about Jack’s role in the financial situation of the winery, and I feel like a resolution is in place for that going forward.

I hope the next book is about Micah and a character I won’t name. Fingers crossed!

Whether you're new to this series or returning for more, I highly recommend Sweet Escape. It is a true testament to finding love in unexpected places.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.

The second book in the series and it’s FINALLY HERE!!!!

I’m obsessed with this series by Meredith Wild and Jillian Liota. An absolutely beautiful small town romance that captures Memphis’ story better than I could have ever imagined!

We first met Memphis in book one and I just knew he needed someone who showed him how to enjoy life! Enter his younger sister, Murphy’s best friend: Vivan. A celebrity musician, Vivian has chosen to escape to Hawthorne Vines to put distance between her life, her toxic ex, and what she wants for her future. Putting things in perspective proves to be just what both she and Memphis need, since he’s also struggling with how much he has on his plate with his family business.

Especially when they decide to *enjoy* what little free time they have with one another. I mean, what better way to avoid life’s problems than to enjoy a rather delicious distraction? HA!

I loved the cameos from Murphy and Wes, I loved watching these two characters help one another see what truly matters and also just how much more they deserve out of life, and I loved revisiting this town and this family.

You can definitely read them as standalones, but I recommend reading them in order to avoid spoilers! And the audio is FANTASTIC, so definitely check it out!

You’ll love this one if you enjoy:
- Best friend’s brother
- Forced proximity
- Fling to forever
- Only you
- Grumpy hero
- Sassy musician heroine
- Celebrity romance
- Small town vineyard
- No strings attached

“We can make it through anything if we always come back to each other.”

I really enjoyed the flirtatious banter between Vivian and Memphis right from the beginning. Their relationship felt so organic with instant attraction but neither of them were afraid to set boundaries to what they really were. Watching their “no strings attached” relationship slowly but steadily bloom into something more was magical.

The emotional depth of Vivian and Memphis as individual characters, going through the motions of life and personal struggles made them so relatable. Even though initially their time together was short, they challenged and supported each other through their difficult times.

I loved the sub plot for both characters. Memphis and his important role in the family business, Vivian on a journey purely encased in finding herself, lead both to beautiful life lessons by the end. I was not prepared for their painful “goodbye” but I was so happy with the overall resolution!

I would highly recommend this to all my book besties who love a small town setting about finding love in truly unexpected places.

Thank you so much to the authors, Page & Vine and Luvs Book Club for the physical ARC copy of this book! 🫶🏻

Sweet Escape is a small town, enemies to lovers novel. This is book 2 of the Hawthrone Vine series, but could be read as a standalone.

After getting cheated on, Vivian decides to take a 2 week getaway. Vi visits her best friend, Murphy, in her hometown of Rosewood and meets her brother, Memphis. There is an instant attraction between them and they agree to have a no strings attached fling. Memphis and Vi are both dealing with their own issues, but the more time they spend together, the more they fall. An opportunity to have some fun and let go of their realities becomes complicated and very emotional.

I enjoyed this book! It was full of love, family and pursuing dreams. I love the dynamic of playful barbs and sexy comebacks between Vi and Memphis. I also learned a thing or two about vineyards! The family aspect teared me up! This was my first book by this duo and I can’t wait to read Murphy’s story in the first book!

This is the 2nd book in the Hawthorne Vines series

We meet Memphis who is helping run his families business with his sister.
Vivian is his sister best friend who just came into town and will be staying for a few weeks with them. Immediately they hit it off but she secretly hates him once she finds out who he is.

The banter and bickering between them was everything, I loved that she would stand her grown and talk back to him because of her sassy personality.

If you love small town, winery setting romances this one is for you. Their romance has their ups and downs like anyone else but I loved the way they came back to each other at the end.

Thank you to the authors and Page and Vine for gifting me this arc.

Holy smokes this was so great! I absolutely loved this book.

Vivian and Memphis gave me everything I needed from this book. The way it was instant lust to benefits to lovers. I loved how well they worked together and how they let each other be who they wanted and needed to be without ever pressuring each other for more.

I usually dread the third act breakup but this one was so good. I love when a girl goes after what she wants for herself.

I only wish wed gotten a tiny bit more of the Hawthorne family and more of the vineyard.

Overall really enjoyed the audiobook! The narrators were both so great and made the story that much more enjoyable.

This book was such a short, fun and fast read! This was my first book by these authors, but it sure will not be my last. Even though this book takes place over the course of two weeks, I thought the authors did a fantastic job in fitting in a well-paced tension filled romance. Also the scenery was immaculate, i absolutely adored the winery setting of this book. Absolutely amazing… now I gotta go read book one!!

This was such a sweet and quick read. A perfect pallet cleanser if you are looking for something short and to the point. I loved the setting and scenery of this one. The authors did a fantastic job of creating a very vivid little town and enjoyable characters. I was a little confused with the enemies to lovers aspect, but other than that, I really enjoyed this one!

Sweet Escape by Meredith Wild and Jillian Liota

(ARC provided through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review)

Wow. Just... wow. This duo writes so beautifully well. The writing style is fast and snappy while being slow enough to not feel rushed. Reading this book was a breeze, and the characters in it are also fun and exciting that you want to keep flipping the pages and reading more.

The plot itself is quite simple—an up and coming musician brings herself on a getaway trip to her best friend's town, where she meets her best friend's brother, the heir to the family's vineyard.

There is a lot of banter between characters in this book, and it is one of the most enjoyable banters I've read in a while. And while funny, these characters still have depth. They are self-aware, are willing to work on their mistakes, and I could just tell that they're all looking to be better versions of themselves, and I find that to be one of the most charming aspects of this book.

It's quite insta-love, as the two fell in love over the course of two weeks, however— and as an insta-love hater, I can't believe I'm saying this—I really, really enjoyed it. Unlike a lot of inst-love stories, the trajectory of their love feels slow and natural. The pacing really does the book justice, and the simple, cozy, slice-of-life feel to the story makes it an enjoyable, easily digestible read.

If you're looking for something light-hearted, fun, with a ton of hilarious dialogue and lovable characters, check this book out!

**ARC provided by Netgalley for a review**

I am a little proud that this is not the first time I’ve read Jillian Liota’s book! ve It is however the first time I've read a Meredith Wild's book. This is also very new to me because I usually repeat a lot of authors but I rarely end up reviewing them because they are what I call my comfort authors. You know those authors that you know they’ll be there no matter what they write and they’re always there for you. Whether you’re in a reading slump, you just read a book that wasn’t good enough so now you want something that will guarantee that it will fully satisfy you. I feel Jillian is becoming that person. That comfort author when I want something very simple: just a good story, just a good time!

Vivian and Memphis were amazing together! Vivian suffered a heartbreak and took some time off to heal and focus on her work. Memphis is trying to save his family business and has expectations for his vineyard. He has pride and loves what he does for a living, even though it is not easy and he has been struggling to keep the business afloat. Vivian, on the other hand, is a musician and she has been lacking a muse. Thankfully, after one amazing night with Memphis, she got her muse back. Memphis is the man who makes her feel music again. He is the one who inspires her, even though they banter a lot of times and seem to be the opposite of what one would want for their lives. Vivian will go back to LA, and Memphis will continue taking care of his vineyard. They know their time together is limited, so why not make the most of it?

I cannot say that I don’t love slow burns because when done right, a slow burn is awesome, but let me tell you that I have been craving for these I like you, you like me, f*ck it, let’s do it! I don’t know if it’s because I’m getting older and my patience is starting to dwindle, but I really appreciate it when the two main characters spend more time between the sheets than refusing to accept their attractions. Guys, we ALL know you’re going to end up in bed together, let’s cut the 200 pages of you denying your feelings and get to it! So “Sweet Escape” is awesome. Vivian sees something she likes, Memphis cannot deny his attraction, wham-bam thank you, ma’am! I mean, their chemistry was amazing and the smut scenes were incredibly hot, so I’m very happy I wasn’t denied smut!

If I had to find something to characterize “Sweet escape” it would be mostly fun. I had fun reading Vivian and Memphis giving up control for each other, exploring their feelings and finding something they loved when and where they least expected. It was fun reading their story and I just found myself smiling through the entire book and that’s the best! You don’t need to cry or feel your heart in your throat every time you read a book, sometimes all you need is a big smile from beginning to end and finishing the book feeling good!

“When things are hard, all you really have is hope.”

Sweet Escape by Meredith Wild and Jillian Liota is Book 2 in the Hawthorne Vines series.

What can you expect?
🏡 Small-town vineyard
💕 Best friend’s older brother
😠 Grumpy hero
💃 Sassy heroine
🎤 Singer FMC
🔥 No strings attached

“It was never just a fling, you and me. Nothing I’ve ever felt for you has been small enough, or meaningless enough to have ever been a fling.”

4 ⭐ | 2.5 🌶

“I’ve been to the mountains, the valleys, the sea searching for something that might maybe set me free. When all of that time all I wanted to be Was home, home, home in your arms. Home, home, home is where you are.”

My thoughts:
I really enjoyed Sweet Escape! If it’s set in a small town, I’m immediately hooked. The story begins with Vivian catching her boyfriend cheating on her. Heartbroken, she heads to her best friend’s family vineyard to focus on writing music for her first album. While there, she can’t resist teasing Memphis, her best friend’s older brother. Memphis, burdened by the family vineyard’s struggles, works long hours and has no time for distractions. Neither is looking for a relationship, so a no-strings-attached fling feels like the perfect solution. But when it’s time for Vivian to return to LA, things become more complicated.

I loved Vivian’s personality—her persistence and confidence stood out. After their first night together, she couldn’t resist wanting more. Her connection with Memphis even helped her creativity with her music. Vivian was hilarious and unapologetically herself. The spice between them? Amazing!

At first, their relationship was purely physical, but as they spent more time together, their bond deepened into an unexpected friendship. Despite this, both kept their emotional walls up. Memphis, overwhelmed by the vineyard’s demands, worked 16–18 hours a day but refused to ask for help.
Vivian, shaped by her absent parents’ flawed relationship, struggled with trust and feared opening up to Memphis. Their growth as characters was well done—Memphis learned to lean on his siblings, and Vivian worked on being more open with those she cared about.

What I appreciated most was that neither interfered with the other’s dreams, even though their goals were very different. Their relationship wasn’t conventional, but it worked perfectly for them.

The small-town vibes, sizzling chemistry, and vineyard setting added so much charm. Although I haven’t read the first book in the series, this was easy to follow, and I now want to read the first for more context. The only downside was that the story dragged a bit in the middle, causing me to lose interest briefly, but it picked up again and ended on a satisfying note.

Thank you, NetGalley, Meredith Wild, and Jillian Liota, for the advance copy. This was my first book from these authors, and it certainly won’t be my last!

Do you want or need "Sweet Escape" from real life? Meredith Wild and Jillian Iota have one right here for you. Vivian and Memphis took us on an emotional rollercoaster. It has spice and passion. It has heartbreak and heartache. It has swoon and warmth. I loved every second of it!

🎵 small town romance
🎵 enemies to lovers
🎵 opposites attract
🎵 grumpy sunshine
🎵 best friend's older brother
🎵 vacation fling

Vivian ran away from LA when she caught her cheating boyfriend and she came to Rosewood where her best friend has a family vineyard. She has to write more music for her upcoming first record and she is stuck. Memphis has a lot of burden on his shoulders. He is trying to revive the dying family business on his own. The last thing he needs is a relationship. But Vivian sparks something primal inside him. It was supposed to be just casual sex. But it never really is.

Vivian is smart-ass and sassy and full of life. But all her life, she never let herself to be open to the people close to her. On the other hand, life has made him grumpy and brooding and closed off in a different way than Vivian. He barely has time to breathe from the vineyard and winery and restaurant and yet he feels he is failing and everything will crush down at any moment. Vivian didn't have nice ideas about him because her best friend said some not so nice things over the years because of the complex family dynamics so it's a bit rough initially. They have insane chemistry from first meeting. It cracks and sizzles and explodes. As they start spending some time together deciding to give into temptation, they find more things to like about each other. Memphis found himself worrying less about his endless task and feel excited about life again. Vivian lifted the weight from his heart. He is stubborn and edgy and didn't let anyone help him but he realised slowly that it's not the way. Vivian never felt as safe and content as she did in the small town. She came here with a broken heart and she found the healing kind of love. But no love story is complete without a bit heartache and angst. Vivian pushed Memphis away out of fear before Memphis could make her stay but she did come back home! I loved their witty banter and sharp words at the beginning. The chemistry was so hot. And I love how their hearts fit like missing puzzle pieces.

Sweet Escape is the second book in the Hawthorne Vines series, following Vivian Walsh, a singer-songwriter who retreats to her best friend’s family vineyard after a painful betrayal. She plans to focus on writing her new album but soon finds herself drawn to Memphis, her best friend’s workaholic brother. Memphis is under pressure to save his family’s vineyard and is not looking for a distraction. However, the chemistry between them leads to a no-strings-attached fling, which ultimately deepens into a more complex emotional connection.

Sweet Escape is an engaging, fast-paced romance that captivates with its dynamic characters and beautiful vineyard setting. The chemistry between Vivian and Memphis is a standout, building from playful banter to intense attraction, with plenty of steamy moments to keep readers hooked. The tranquil vineyard backdrop serves as a perfect setting for the characters’ personal growth and evolving relationship.

While the romance is compelling, it occasionally feels rushed. The focus on the characters’ careers rather than a more organic emotional buildup leads to a relationship that develops quickly, particularly considering the short timeline of the story. Some readers may appreciate the fast-paced, friends-with-benefits-to-love trope, but others might find the emotional depth lacking.

Vivian and Memphis both have intriguing backstories, but their emotional growth could have been explored further. While the authors touch on their pasts and motivations, a deeper dive into their vulnerabilities would have made their romantic connection even more impactful. Their journey from casual fling to something more could have benefited from a slower, more deliberate development to make it feel more authentic and emotionally grounded.

Sweet Escape is a heartwarming and steamy romance with great chemistry and a captivating setting. While the emotional depth and development of the romance could have been expanded, it remains an enjoyable and satisfying read for fans of contemporary romance.

I really loved this romance, and can't wait to go back to the first book in this series so I can experience another romance in this world. The first thing I noticed in this book is that the physical connection between Memphis and Vivian is what drew them together before any emotional connection formed. That would usually be a red flag in a romance (unless I'm reading erotic romances), but I liked that they really acknowledged it in this book and we got to see them develop a really genuine friendship as they were exploring their sexual relationship. It made the romance truly believable because that friendship was prioritised. The other main aspect to this story is definitely family dynamics, and predominantly the issues that would've been covered in the first book between Murphy, Memphis, Micah and their father. There were definitely feelings of abandonment and neglect from their father that took precedent in Memphis' character development, and it was interesting to see him explore those feelings and slowly realise this responsibility he felt for his entire family wasn't something he needed to bare on his own. For Vivian, she had this slightly more understated storyline of not being able to let anyone past her walls, but that only really came up towards the end of the story, despite the majority of the story being from her POV. I enjoyed seeing her explore her music and her muse, and it was really great to see a strong female character prioritising herself and her career. The only thing that potentially took this book down from five stars was that I think there was something not quite right with the pacing. There were a few moments in the middle that did feel like they were dragging and my interest did wane a little, so I think it would've been helped if there was a larger plot threaded into the story to keep the pace going, outside of the issues with keeping the vineyard running. But I think that's my only criticism of a romance I really truly enjoyed. I can't wait to read Murphy and Wes' story, as well as Micah's, when the time comes!

Memphis is tired and overwhelmed. He runs his family vineyard, Hawthorne Vines and is struggling to make it solvent again. He doesn’t have time to date much less get into a serious relationship. Vivian has achieved her dream of becoming a successful singer songwriter. She is having a struggle writing so she visits her friend in Rosewood. She doesn’t have time for a relationship just as her career is taking off and especially not with her best friend’s older brother. Can two people take an obvious attraction but two separate lives find a way to have a relationship?

Memphis has a large growth curve in the story. At the beginning he is driven to make the vineyard a success but he is closed off and stressed out. The author gives Memphis the chance to learn and to adjust the way he deals with the day-to-day stresses. I thought his changes were very organic and believable. His conversations with his family were touching and sweet. The one things that stays the same throughout is that he will never leave Rosewood. He loves his hometown. Vivian has paid her dues and is just about to breakout with her singing career. I love that Memphis’s sister is one of Vivian’s co-writers. It makes Vivian’s decision to spend time in Rosewood more realistic. Vivian has lots of beliefs about Memphis when she first comes to town and has to work through those biases to see the real man. I thought her journey from being out of ideas for her new songs to falling in love with Memphis to writing new music was good. I even like that she struggled with what it would mean to her to be in love with Memphis.

This is a best friend’s bother, small town love story. Both of the main characters have demanding careers that are overwhelming at times. This is a sweet love story between two self-aware adults. I would recommend this if you want a nice small town love story. I will read more from this author in the future.

No sé.

Sweet Escape is a best friends brother, grumpy sunshine romance with a bit of insta lust thrown in. Vivian has just endured a painful betrayal and break up and escapes to her best friend's home town where the family owns a vineyard. She is looking for some down time and time away before she goes into the studio to record an album. Memphis is working overtime to try and save the family's vineyard by trying to get it out of debt. There is instant chemistry when they meet until Vivian realizes the bartender she was talking up is her best friend's brother and then she puts a halt to that....although it doesn't last long.

I really enjoyed the family business aspect to the story and I really liked how Memphis and Vivian were opposites personality wise but brought out the best in each other. I liked how much Vivian appreciated the smaller town and the people in it and how it gave her inspiration which she then poured into her music.

I did struggle a little with the pacing of the book. I found the first half to be on the slower side. I can normally read a book a day, and I found myself putting the book down after only reading a little bit. It just didn't grab me like I was hoping. Closer towards the 70 percent mark or so, I found myself much more invested and enjoying Memphis and Vivian's story and hoping they would get there happily ever after. Overall the story was interesting and I liked the characters, it was just slow for a while. It did finish strong though and I am glad I read it to the end.

Thank you to Netgalley and the authors for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.

Vivan Walsh is a rising singer-songwriter. After she discovers her boyfriend of three years cheated on her she needs to get away. She chooses to stay with her best friend Murphy at her family’s vineyard. She is looking for recovery and inspiration for new album. Murphy’s brother Memphis runs the struggling vineyard that has been in their family for generations. He is trying everything he can to make it profitable. He doesn’t have time for his sister’s flirty friend but their chemistry pulls them together.

The story, for the most part, takes place in a two week time period. So a lot of things feel rushed. I’m not fond of the theme of the way to get over someone is to get under someone else. But they are adults and are honest that neither is looking for a relationship. The story is told in alternating chapters from both leads' POVs.

By happenstance this is the third book I’ve read in as many weeks that is set in a small family vineyard. I did like the setting but thought the other books talked about winemaking better. This could have been almost any family business. The author’s are good at bringing heat between the couple. And I liked the friendship moments between Viviane and Murphy. This is the second in the Hawthorne Vines series and I liked Murphy enough to want to read her romance in ‘Bitter Truth’ (Aug 2024). I assume brother Micah will get the next romance. This is quick escapism romance. Thank you to Montlake and Netgalley for the ARC and I am leaving an honest review.

Sweet Escape is book 2 in the Hawthorne series, it can read completely fine as a standalone. It was a short, sweet and spicy read that was straight to the point. With its shortness though I don't think adding that third act breakup was truly necessary, they already didn't have much time together, so I wished that wouldn't have been there. Apart from that it was a super cute romance story. The setting is absolutely perfect and charming. The vineyard is so well described, it makes the entire story feel so cozy.

I loved Vivian & Memphis. Vivian is a little spitfire, I loved how she dominated the beginning of the relationship and went after what she wanted. They had some amazing chemistry when they were together. The romance was very fast, happening in the span of 2 weeks, which truly is not my favorite, so I had a hard time believing it. A lot of things felt really rushed. Also, the enemies to lovers aspect wasn't really present apart from about a few pages in the beginning, so that was a little misleading, truly confusing, because they had never met before..

Overall, this is a good escapism romance. A great palate cleanser if you want something short, sweet and straight to the point.

🎧 The narration by Marcio Catalano & Carly Robins was great. I enjoyed how their voices fit together. Carly is one of my favorites so she was a straight win for me. They played the characters perfectly, the spice was great !

There is insta attraction, through the roof chemistry, it's lightheaded, with playful banter and heartwarming at the same time.
All the things that made me devour the book, it's an amazing read. I was so happy while reading it, it checked all the boxes for this type of book.

I really enjoyed the way Vivian was written. She is tenacious and so fun, vibrant and with a big personality. She is emotionally mature and rational while dealing with her problems. She goes after what she wants and is not afraid or apologetic.
Memphis was very serious and disconnected, so it was so much fun to watch his walls crumble, because in the end he just wanted to be loved.

This book is not only that, but also something that will make you think about yourself alongside the journey that the characters are going. Such as thinking about the perspective that others have off you versus the perspective that you have off yourself.

And it will also make you feel all the feelings. It's a very complete history with amazing character development and contrary to what with this types of storyline this book was not a cliche nor predictable.

The epilogue was so good and real and down to earth.

Quotes:
"Tell me, Mr. Bartender, when you picture me being scandalized, am I on my knees or on my back?"
"God, she's exasperating. I want to kiss that f***** smirk right off her face"
He is a spreadsheet and she is a watercolor painting.
