This is a tried and true method to learning a language quickly and effectively, even as complete beginners.
There are indeed three books included in this massive volume: A book on pronunciation and grammar, a book of travel phrases, and finally a slim volume of one-page short stories accompanied by their English translations.
The first book begins with a thorough introduction to pronunciation. There is an accompanying video that can be downloaded with purchase of the book that has nearly an hour of pronunciation to guide the user through the various accents of the French language.
After the section on pronunciation, the book continues with a detailed review of noun and adverb agreement and then to the present verb tense, discussing irregular verbs.
The section on grammar continues with from the basics of the language towards progressively more complex topics in grammar. At times, the book is almost reference-like in its detail and would certainly reward the learner who re-reads it. For the complete beginner, the level of detail might be a little imposing, but for the right person, it is the right book. Little facts about the language are interspersed throughout the section on grammar, and the first volume concludes with various open-ended translation exercises. There is no answer key to these translation exercises but Google translate should suffice for that.
The second book contained in this volume is a phrasebook for travelers. However, this is no ordinary phrasebook that you might find added in the back of a travel guide as an afterthought. This phrasebook is designed for people who have acquired the knowledge of grammar from the first book. It is full of detailed, intermediate-level phrases for a traveler to a Francophone country. For this reason, the book stands apart from the many others you might find available online.
The phrasebook includes exhaustive lists of many different types of phrases that almost demand placement elsewhere in a different format that to make them more accessible to the reader/speaker, such as in a note-taking app or flash card app.
There are many phrases for many different scenarios that a tourist might find themselves in, so many that they might be difficult to remember, but they would be ideal practice for a pair of people to role-play before traveling to a Francophone country. For example, one person could be the diner and pose the phrases to the other person, who could either sit across from them at the dining table or play the role of the waiter. The second book has cultural notes interspersed throughout.
The third book in the volume has French short stories. These are short—2 pages at most. After each story comes the English translation as well as a list of relevant vocabulary words and reading comprehension questions. This book has historical notes interspersed throughout.
All in all, this volume has something for anyone who is learning the French language. It is truly a value to have all 3 of these books together in one volume.
I found this book a pleasant surprise, a language book that is not only engaging and exciting but also offering a comprehensive approach to learning. I was particularly intrigued by the comparison phrases between French and English. I’m eager to start reading this book with a feeling I’ll be able to finish it, which hasn’t always been the case with other language books I’ve come across. Recommended!
This is a great, broad book that attacks learning a language in a very extensive way. Vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure and each chapter builds on the next. Put it all together with language used in certain settings and fun stories at the end.
