The Nicomachean Ethics of Aristotle

Rate this book
Aristotle's "Nicomachean Ethics" explores how humans can achieve the highest good, or eudaimonia, through virtuous living. Consisting of ten books, it emphasizes practical ethics over theoretical, aiming to guide individuals in achieving a good life. Aristotle connects ethics to politics, proposing that good social institutions foster virtuous citizens. His work influenced medieval philosophy, merging with Christian theology through figures like Thomas Aquinas. The text remains significant, especially with the modern revival of virtue ethics.

ATY 2025 Week 29. Second book with a pair of opposites in their titles: The Nicomachean Ethics of Aristotle by William David Ross

Finally finished Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics today, and what a profound journey! This timeless masterpiece explores the pursuit of eudaimonia—true human flourishing—through virtue, the golden mean, and practical wisdom. Aristotle’s insights into courage, friendship, justice, and the good life feel incredibly relevant even thousands of years later. Challenging at times, but deeply rewarding. A foundational work that every thinker should read. Highly recommended!
