I really wanted to enjoy this and rate it higher but I might not have been the target audience for this 🤣
I’ll start off with the things I did enjoy — it’s super fast paced and short. I binged this in one sitting and it gets right to the point. Some of the later spicy scenes between the three mc’s were written well (I liked “catch me” scene 🪭). Although this was not my vibe, I’ll admit it was entertaining and brought emotions out of me (good and bad).
Now for what didn’t work for me — I knew full well this had the step sibling trope in it beforehand and it was not my main issue with it. I blocked that part out (despite being reminded every FF spicy scene). I’ve read taboo romances before but parts of this just didn’t sit well with me when you combine it all together. Having a 19 year old virgin be with a 40 year old guy who also slept with her 22/23 year old step sister was making my head spin 😅. The auction & deflowering scene were traumatising ✨ The step mum has some serious problems 🥴 I wanted Alaric to tap into Mafia mode!!
I love why choose but I was expecting the dynamic to be more balanced than it was. With the way it unfolded, Birdie’s relationship with Alaric cheapened what Violet had with him. Birdie made everything about herself. Birdie and Violet’s relationship lacked development. Lastly, I would have liked more flashback scenes between Alaric and Violet.
Overall, this was a short read and a bit of fun. If a MFF x Cinderella retelling sounds appealing to you, you should definitely give it a go.

This book was something all right 😳. To be honest, I think I'm rounding up only because I did read this book SUPER fast! Did I like it? Sure... but did I imagine things differently in my head while reading? Yes, as well.
What do I mean? I mean that I ignored the fact that Birdie, who is being sold in the Black Rose Auction for her hand in marriage, gets paired with Alaric, a 40-year-old man lol. That gap in my brain did not exist, sorry not sorry... that's too much. Not to mention this is an MFF romance, so Violet her stepsister is in love with Birdie, who is 22 years old and had a fling in the past with Alaric.
Again, it was a fun ride, but there were scenes that were cringy even for a dark romance. I did like how Alaric became possessive and wanted not only Birdie, but also reached out to Violet. The vibes between all three were very "why choose," but most of the time it didn't feel as a why choose as compared to other books I read with the same trope. Also for Violet and Birdie to be "in love" it was very skimmed in the spicy scenes we got more Alaric and Birdie action than with Violet when originally Birdie is with Alaric because she loves Violet.. just little things on my end.
If you ARE INTO DARK ROMANCE and love huge age gaps, then this book is FOR YOU! It is short, sweet, and straight to the point. It just didn't hit for me as much as I wanted it to.

Birdie has lived a sheltered life, treated horribly by her stepmother and stepsister after her abusive father died. Basically, she's like a modern-day Cinderella. She is desperate to escape her life, so agrees to be Auctioned off at the Black Rose Auction as a Virgin Bride. Now the twist is Birdie is in love with her other stepsister Violet, who loves her back. Violet is determined to protect and save Birdie from her fate at the Auction so she approaches Alaric, one of her past lovers, with a proposal to buy Birdie and then she will pay him so the two can escape together... but soon Alaric realises he might not want to let Birdie go, so soon Birdie is forced to choose between the two who have her heart... or does she really have to choose?
𝙏𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙁𝙚𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨:
I wanted something quick, dark and dirty and I pretty much got what I expected! Birdie felt a little childish at times. She’s described as innocent, which makes sense given her background, but her naivety occasionally reads as unintelligent. Given her supposed love of books, I expected her to be more aware of the world. That said, BECAUSE this is a novella, I didn’t hold this too much against the story because I wanted something FAST, DARK AND DIRTY. BUT if this had been a full-length novel, I probably would have been a lot more critical.
Violet, on the other hand, was my favourite! She was determined, protective, and willing to sacrifice her happiness for Birdie. She is resourceful and won't let desperation stop her from finding a solution. I loved that she had a fire in her. She also balanced Birdie’s innocence, pushing back on Alaric and taking control when needed. She felt far more believable as a character, especially given that she was older. I also liked that as she was more sexually experienced, and then when she played into her dominating side... I seriously developed a girl crush!
Alaric is deadly, and sophisticated and eludes power. He is the type of man that knows what he wants and how to get it and he won't let anyone stop him or get in his way. He truly showed that even a harsh man can have a soft side and how he cared for the girls was just gentle and sweet... but he can go rough when needs be 😏😉

Understand?”I always feel like novellas need to be judged on a different scale than full-length books... With less "time" to flesh out the characterisation, backstory, and sometimes world-building, you have to go with the flow and accept that you won’t get the same depth. NOW as a reader who craves in-depth character exploration and detailed backstory, I often find myself wanting more when I read Novella's... but that doesn’t mean a novella isn’t a good story. SO I have adjusted my expectations and judged this like a NOVELLA.

I gobbled this one up in one sitting. I had a rough week, laid up with an injury and this naughty little delight was just what the doctor ordered. Well, maybe not, but it was still fun!
Birdie and Violet have such a sweet, forbidden relationship. Stepsisters they may be, but I could feel how deep their connection was. Living under the thumb of Violet's mother, they turn to Alaric, Violet’s ex, to help them out.
How is he helping them out? Well, by buying Birdie’s hand in marriage in a virginity auction, of course! And it ain't even as simple as that. So buckle up!
This was a spicy little novella and I truly enjoyed myself, listening to the audio in just a few hours. It was narrated by Michelle Sparks, Angelina Rocca and Stephen Borne. They were all well done, though I did find the male narrators's depiction of the women to be slightly off base. Just being honest!

I wasn't sure about the whole virgin auction thing but I still read this book since it's Sara Cate and it's a novella. I don't get triggered easily but the misogyny at the beginning was too much, Birdie was basically forced to partecipate to this auction because it was the only way to get out of her abusive home, she was paraded as a piece of meat from her stepmother, then she was forced to present herself naked in front of men who were there to bid on her and she was forced to have sex with Alaric while her stepmother, stepsisters and bodyguards were watching... The other half was slightly better but I didn't care for the characters

The title of this book is spot on so perfect for the story. If you could describe this book in two words, it would be, Shattered Innocence.
This is a loose retelling of Cinderella, there is the horrid step mother and two step sisters, but that is about where the similarities end. In this story, Birdie (Cinderella) and her stepsister Violet, are in love and Violet will do anything (within her power) to protect Birdie. Birdie has agreed to be sold off at the Black Rose Auction, to the highest bidder. Violet has some secrets of her own, and a previous love interest, Alaric Stone, who is wealthy, and male, and therefore she pleads her case to have him win Birdie at the auction.
While Alaric makes no promises to Violet, he soon changes his mind when he meets Birdie and realizes her innocence, he becomes immediately protective of that innocence and does not want to see the disgusting hands of any other upon her. As the story unfolds, Birdie's stepmother has more and more cruel punishments for Birdie, even as Birdie is finally escaping her stepmother.
I loved how Birdie's innocence is truly shattered, not just by literally being auctioned off like a possession, or how she is treated by not only her stepmother, but others within the story, but also by her own "coming out" into the world. All of the side characters in this story made me angry, and made me hate them. I always feel a truly well written villain receives hatred from their audience, and not the villains we love to hate, but truly dislike, and Sara Cate does that well here. Just when you think Birdie has escaped her captor (her stepmother), they manage to slip in one more truly evil act that is intended to hurt not only Birdie, but also Violet. Instead, the two are brought closer together, and bring Alaric along with them.
While a short story, this was truly enjoyable, with plenty of spice from the get go. A must read to uncover how Birdie's innocence is shattered to pieces.

If you want a Cinderella retelling where this time she’s romantically involved with one of her stepsisters but her stepmother decides to sell her at an auction to the highest bidder then you may want to crack this sizzling book open!! We get a MFF romance with a virgin FMC, bits of bdsm & primal play & good ole fashion smut!!!!

Shattered Innocence is an age gap, stepsisters, forbidden, Cinderella retelling, MFF poly romance novella from Sara Cate. This drops you right into the story but I was here for it and really enjoyed this. As a novella it totally works and was deliciously fun!
Birdie’s stepmother is the worst and she wants to get away from her, which is why she said yes to being offered up for an auction. The auction is set but Birdie is just focused on being able to run away with her stepsister Violet after. Violet asks Alaric, a man she had a relationship of sorts with in the past, to help her out again in purchasing Birdie. But he quickly realizes he doesn’t want to let either of them go, and they don’t want to leave either…

Не дуже люблю любовні трикутники, але вкінці вони залишились втрьох і хоч це радує, плюс це стосунки де ЖЧЖ, і отут вже цікавіше. Мачуха головної героїні дуже дратуюча, і логіка у неї звичайно відпочиває, батько Берти знущався над ними, але всеодно винна сама Берта і ця мачуха над нею знущалась теж, то ж вона нічим не краще за того. Але відсутність логіки в деяких моментах змушує поставити 3, бо це не настільки погано, але далеко від того, що б мені сподобалося.

SO MUCH FUN 🔥
I’m so glad this was my first ever ARC read.
It seems like retellings are trending recently but this was an entire reimagining with such an unexpected twist on a classic Cinderella story. Step sisters fall into a taboo romance while trapped under the same roof. While one sister seems too innocent for her own good (Birdie), the other would gladly watch the world burn to keep her safe (Violet). Then comes Alaric with his grey morals and dark past, his favor of a lifetime, and the inevitable twist that just makes the braided bond between these three that much stronger.
I read this in one sitting and though it was on the shorter side considering page count, it had everything promised. A forbidden poly romance with just enough tension to keep you engaged from start to finish. Oh, and does it deliver on spice 🌶️🌶️🌶️

I haven't really paid attention to this series, but I can't turn down a chance to read anything new from Sara Cate. And this was short, sweet and perfectly smutty.

I liked the vibe of this book. Darkish, fairytale retelling with these taboo vibes. Very Sara Cate-ish to have it seem like a love triangle when in fact they all are very much into each other. And we all end in one spicy little happy family.
The pages turn quickly on this one - so I highly recommend it to help reset if you're in a book slump, or for a busy weekend where you don't have time for something too deep. You'll find yourself in love with these ladies - and well, Alaric too :)

This was a spin on the classic Cinderella tale, Birdie is mistreated by her evil stepmother, but the different? Her stepsister Violet and her are in love, so when Birdie is auctioned off to the highest bidder, Violet called in a favour.
This was a quick, spicy FFM story and I ate it up in one sitting. The mix of personalities and the chemistry between the throuple was well done.

Sara Cate just never disappoints with her dark romance books. Shattered Innocence had me hot and bothered within seconds, and the dark Cinderella retelling kept me hooked. For a short novella, it packed a punch—with a captivating MFF relationship and characters I couldn’t get enough of. Oh my god…this book was spicy and I loved it! Forbidden romance has easily become one of my favorite tropes along with why choose/polygamy and this book was amazing! It’s a quick and easy read and just flowed really well and smoothly for such a short book. I loved that we got to know each character in depth and how they all just matched each other perfectly.
I’m a sucker for a why choose/poly romance but I have never read a MFF/FFM romance before and I need more books with this trope now!
I love Sara Cate’s books and she just knows how to write her spicy scenes and her books are always so much fun to read!
I am down bad for both Violet and Alaric 🧎🏻♀️🧎🏻♀️!!! They are all living my dream life 🥹! Anyways, I could probably read a full length novel about them and I hope we get some additional content of them because I loved this book ♥️♥️!!

The writing is great, it’s just the content is not for me.
I knew this was a step sibling romance going in and it’s usually hit or miss for me on those but I knew this wasn’t going to work for me when Violet called Birdie “little sister” when she had a finger inside of her in the 3rd chapter.
Plus the fact that Birdie is still basically a child at only 19, the 20+ year age gap with Alaric, the heavy virgin trope where even one finger is too big, and the unprotected sex that lead to them mentioning multiple times that she could already be pregnant (she’s not thankfully), just led to an unenjoyable and for me gross reading/skimming experience.
I’ve never had one of the Bonkers Kickstarter books not land for me so this kinda sucks.

Birdie is basically a captive in her own home, forced to serve her evil stepmother. The one shining light in all this darkness is Violet, her stepsister, whom she loves and who has promised to help her escape her current situation. When her stepmother plans to auction off Birdie's innocence to the highest bidder, Violet desperately plans to save her by enlisting her powerful ex, Alaric, thinking he can be the means to help Birdie and Violet escape. It soon comes to light that Alaric won’t so easily let either of them go.
Anything from Sara Cate is going to be a slam dunk for me, and this was no different. Deliciously spicy and with fun relationship dynamics, I almost finished this book in one sitting! I love how Sara creates tension and finds the resolution in her stories, finding a way to build out fun and interesting characters so quickly and effectively. And that SPICE! Oh my lanta. This story wasn’t very long, but it was chock FULL of that scrumptious Cate spice! I had such a fun time reading this story, and I highly recommend it!

Violet reaches out to a past lover, hitman Alaric. Pleading with him to win Birdie so they can finally be free. He agrees, BUT…soon realises he doesn’t want to let either of them go.
This novella has very little plot, just enough to get you hooked. The spice is OFF THE CHARTS in a way that only Sara Cate can do.
I selfishly hope that she decides to expand on this story a bit more in the future with a full book…because I would literally EAT IT UP! 😍

Her stepsister, Violet, vows not to let Birdie end up in the wrong hands. She enlists the help of a former flame, Alaric, and begs him to bid on her.
When things don’t go according to plan at the auction, and Alaric and Birdie must put on a show, things change, and Alaric wants to play for keeps.
Will Birdie get her HEA with Violet? Or will the waters become muddied now that Alaric is involved?
I really enjoyed this one. The narrators did a fantastic job. It was spicy and sexy and such a great spin on the story. 🖤

This book is full of taboo tropes and it was definitely worth the read. My only complaint is that this book wasn't long enough, I'd have read another 200 pages of this storyline. This insta-love, Cinderella-esque story was a fast read that had me binging this until 2am. Note that while this says it's the 5th in the series, it is 100% a stand alone and does not require you to read the first four books. Highly recommend!

As a Cinderella lover, I really enjoyed this novella-length retelling. Birdie was innocent and sweet, yet kept Violet and Alaric on their toes the entire time Alaric was everything I want in an MMC and Violet rounded them out perfectly. Sara really packed a lot in this little book!
