Shin'ichi Hoshi (1926-1997) is considered to be one of Japan's most influential science fiction writers of all time... but he's not very well known among western readers, I think. A few of his works have been translated and are available as e-book, including this little book. You can find out more about Hoshi here .

Kimagure Robotto, or, The Whimsical Robot, is a fun little book containing 'short shorts': short stories of no more than 5 pages each. Each of the stories is about an invention, whether it's a device to tame wild animals, a potion that enables you to distinguish good from bad people, or a robot that has everyone wondering about its use. There are some characters that appear in many of the stories, like professor R who makes medicine, the rich Mr. N., and professor K who specialises in animals. Then there are a few stories about interaction with aliens. The stories are aimed at children but are quite enjoyable for adults too. Some of the stories are really funny, some leave you wondering, some leave you shaking your head, and some are (I have to admit) a bit boring.

I do have a few favourite stories. Coincidentally the stories I most enjoyed were near the back of the book: ネコ(The cat), 花とひみつ(Flowers and secrets), and とりひき(The deal). It's hard to say something about stories that are this short, so I won't say anything to avoid spoiling.

As for its readability, this book was a really easy read. This is the first Japanese book I've ever read that felt like I was reading English or Dutch, which essentially means that the level of Japanese was probably too low for me. I finished most of the stories in 5-10 minutes (during commercial breaks when I was watching television haha) and I only had a to look up a few recurring words such as 'telescope'. I think this book is very suitable as practice material for those at JLPT N3 level.

Would I recommend this book? If you want to gain some confidence in your Japanese skills: hell yes. But if you're looking for a captivating read, probably not. I personally really enjoy short stories in Japanese, mostly because I tend to find full books a bit hard to swallow, but the stories in this collection got a bit repetitive. There simply wasn't much incentive to keep reading, which is the main reason this book took me such a long time. On the other hand, if you decide to read one or two stories now and then (with decent breaks in between), it's certainly a fun read.

I came across Shinichi Hoshi’s name in relation to a literary prize in Japan that acknowledges the literary efforts of robots and I was curious to see what kind of stories he wrote. He is a rather obscure figure in the West and it’s only thanks to his daughter that this and one other collection of his short stories have been translated into English. The stories, all very short, have children in mind as the audience, so as to be expected, the language is simplistic and the narrative often moralistic. They are however also very clever, with a little twist at the end of each one that you sometimes don’t see coming.

I was hoping the Whimsical Robot of the title that actually inspired the literary prize I previously mentioned, would be a robot that writes, but sadly that was not the case. I felt a little disappointed!
This is a very cute book though and I would recommend it to anyone with kids as something fun to read to them!

*Score: 6.5/10*

This is a series of very short stories (3 to 5 small pages each), all having some sci fi aspects and comedic element, usually centering around weird planets or robots or events, with some funny twists in the end.

Really good as a distraction from bigger reads, relaxing and mildly amusing, with some stories being funny (like that child with the wail that pierces windows and walls!) and others just forgettable.

Overall very neautral feel on the book, with nothing I really love or really hate. Passable collection.

A collection of "short-shorts" by Hoshi Shinichi originally published in the Sunday editions of Japan's Asahi Newspaper. These super-short stories (the longest of which is seven pages) are modern fables with elements of sci-fi, each with a punch line and a bit of truth. Written for grade-school-level readers, the tales range from quirky to absurd to grim; all are original, and many give pause for thought.

The most memorable story to me is "Omiyage," or "The Gift," in which benevolent aliens land on Earth long before humans have evolved, hoping to impart their wisdom. Since there are no people yet, they construct and leave behind a vessel containing a guide kit to solving humanity's biggest problems: blueprints for space ships, instructions for medicine that will cure any disease (even reverse aging), a book with the secrets to world peace, and, of course, an illustrated dictionary for translating their alien language. They take care to leave the vessel where it will not fall into the sea or be buried by volcanic eruptions in the years it will take for the human race to be ready to receive this knowledge: they choose a desert. The years pass and their plan works—the vessel endures. But instead of being found and utilized for the good of humankind, it is blown up in a nuclear bomb test.

While these stories are accessible to children, they hold lessons for us all, even and especially as adults.

Recommended to all students of Japanese willing to start reading actual books written by Japanese authors - and a famous one. If you're N3 or up, you will probably have no problem reading this if you up to consulting the dictionary at every page maybe. Since Hoshi-san's language is extremily consistent and even a bit repetitive, you will stumble upon the same words and expressions enough times to memorize them if they happen to be new to you - and you will end up using the dictionary less and less. Then, many of the words are written in hiragana which may be a great help for some learners who have a hard time with kanji but do speak the language well. On the contrary, personally I tend to read better than I talk/listen, so sometimes hiragana was just confusing, as I would understand the word right away if it was on kanji. Anyway, that's just me.

Hoshi Shin'ichi is considered to be a voice of Japanese Science Fiction - but he is way more than that. He created his own peculiar genre with little, naive, unpretentious stories which usually features an one-purpose robot or aliens visiting Earth or elsewhere. They are all built on mystery and very often they conclude in a joke - I found myself laughing at the end of most stories, mostly at how silly the "joke'/solution of the mystery was. Finally, they are indeed short stories, featuring about 5 pages of the tiny bunko book format.

Hoshi Shinichi's short stories are great to read casually. Some of his stories made me really think hard; for instance, 「ネコ」(literally translated, 'Cat') made me think, 'Perhaps it is true that humans are slaves of cats...' because we provide food for cats, we take care of cats, and cats do not seem to care at all about us (unlike dogs). These kinds of stories I enjoyed to read.

However, I must say some of the stories were hackneyed. Some of the 'plot twist' was too easy to catch, at least for me. I am not going to reveal an example of the 'plot twist,' just in case if you want to figure it out by yourself, but if you read through, you will see what I am talking about.

Overall, Hoshi Shinichi's short stories are good when you want some relief/escape from reality. These are some very smooth stories to read (usually readable in like 10 minutes, depending on your Japanese abilities though). There's no killing, no blood, no rape, no cruelties, no adulteries involved. If I were to rate this by the film rating system, it would probably be a G or at most PG. Great, fun, casual stories to read. I would recommend.

This book has a lot of short stories in one book- and the story Caprise Robot is one of them. It is about one robot a scientist made and it is very very helpful. But sometimes it acts crazy. The scientist sold it to a very rich person. He said he will go to an island himself but he needs a company so he bought the robot with a lot of money. Once on the island, Mr. N (the very rich person) told him to make his dinner, wash the dishes, clean the room and give him a dessert. The robot did all right with those directions but after that it chased after Mr. N and made him very tired. But after chasing Mr. N it was just the way it was the first time. When Mr. N came back from his vacation, he told the scientist about what happened. But the scientist just said, "Well people need to move their body a lot and exercise. If you just use the robot and don't do anything you will get lazy and chubby." M.Y.

A very cute short story collection, where each story generally revolves around some strange invention or creature. There's usually some kind of punchline or Twilight Zone-esque twist and I had a lot of fun figuring out what the gag was for each story. Reminds me a lot of Where the Sidewalk ends, albeit prose rather than poetry.

it's a very short stories collection, and mostly are about technology. Because the stories are very short, I can't enjoy the climax of the story, and it's too flat. Every story has similarity so it feels monotone.

Good, but several of the themes in the book are super-repetitive. Book was a delight to read at first, but became tedious towards the end. Perhaps a book best enjoyed in little bits at a time.
