Macanudo #2 collects more of Liniers' great daily strip (the first selection of which appeared in volume #1). And like the first volume, this new collection is marked by subtle charm, existential wit, a playful sensibility, and a probing mind. Dive in for more Henrietta and her cat, Fellini; more Mandlebaum, the teddy bear; more sensitive robot, and much else besides!
Ricardo Liniers” Siri is an acclaimed and well-beloved Argentine cartoonist, whose wildly popular daily strip Macanudo (cool”) has been published in the Argentine newspaper La Nación for the past ten years. This strip has won him fans throughout the world and comparisons to the cartoonist heavyweights Charles Schultz and Bill Watterson. Liniers also travels around the world with musician Kevin Johansen, painting on big canvases on stage while Johansen makes music. Sometimes, they switch places. Liniers has over 3,600 published comic strips and has published over twenty-five books in Spanish, and more than ten books in nine countries from Brazil to the Czech Republic. His first book to be published in English, The Big Wet Balloon, has been both a critical and popular success and was selected as a best book of 2013 by Parents Magazine. And the fourth volume of his Macanudo to appear in French was recently selected for the 2014 Angouléme Festival. Together with his wife Angie, Liniers also founded the comics publisher La Editorial Común. Liniers lives in Buenos Aires, Argentina, with his wife and three daughters—Matilda, Clementina, and Emma. No penguins though. . . Yet.

Ricardo Liniers lives in Buenos Aires with his wife and two daughters, who inspired this story. For more than ten years, he has published a hugely popular daily strip, Macanudo, in the Argentine newspaper La Nación. He also tours the world drawing onstage with musician Kevin Johansen. His work has been published in nine countries from Brazil to the Czech Republic and in the United States.
Acclaimed Argentinian cartoonist and painter Liniers has more than 25 books out, most of them only in Spanish, and is now getting a little known in the U.S. as the books get translated. This is a second collection of strips, funny, sweet, surreal, entertaining. Check them out. Uniquely Liniers. Nothing else quite like him. Some characters, like a little penguin, are pretty stable, but he doesn't do a Peanuts world, with regular characters in a neighborhood, he just draws strips, and has a quirky sense of humor. My kids like it, but I don't think it is just for kids.
The first page cartoon may help one get at what Liniers is "about":
There's two little penguins looking up at the last leaf on a late fall tree. One of them yells, "Don't do it! Don't jump!"
I know, pretty funny, right? And not heavy. But when did Charles Schulz have to be heavy to be amazing?
Above the penguins, there's a quotation from Chris Ware, whom I imagine to be an admirer and certainly a fellow (maybe a few degrees lighter) comics master: "The possible vocabulary of comics is, by definition, unlimited. . . "
I love this comic strip in the funny papers, so I sought out the books and they do not disappoint! Henrietta is me in my soul, I love her strip the best and she is featured heavily in this edition. I love the hidden jokes and double meanings. Just a delight!
This book is a comic book that contains a few steady characters throughout the book. However, none of their stories are more than about 5 pictures long. Even though each story is very short, they are developed, but none of them intertwine with each other.
The illustrations are very cartoon-like with bright reds and yellows to match the style of the comic writing. Each story has a thick white gutter around each frame which creates the "distant" feeling between each strip since they aren't in any kind of sequence.
Overall, I didn't really enjoy the book, mainly because there was no plot line. However, if a reader just wants to pass a little but of time without wanting to get involved in a book, it is a good choice to read.
This second collection of comic strips from a talented and observant artist from Argentina will make readers smile in self-recognition while also making them think--and then think again. Many of the favorite elements from his earlier collection are here, including Henrietta and her stuffed bear, Mandelbaum, and beloved cat, Fellini, as well as those somehow hilarious garden gnomes, sneezing planets, and a very sensitive robot. Every reader will have his/her favorite character or strip in this eclectic collection guaranteed to amuse and encourage readers to think. I enjoyed these very much as I expect anyone who likes to read Bone or Calvin and Hobbes will.
So glad to have discovered this book on the shelves at the local library. Translated from the Spanish, the art is beautiful, the feel is not so much whimsical as pleasantly and irresistibly odd and it is a thing of beauty and wonder.
