Knitting Through Time: Stories of How We Learned to Knit

Rate this book
How did human beings learn to knit? What's the story? We don't know, and there may be many stories of unknown knitters who figured out how to make fabric from a ball of yarn and two sticks. These fictional stories spin tales of how we all may have learned to knit, starting from the first knitted cloth made in Egypt and all the way up to the present.

Told through the stories of three main characters, Knitting Through Time shows how women in Western Europe and North America may have learned to knit.

Journey with Seraphina, a Roman aristocrat of the 4th century, who seeks solace in the stark simplicity of the Egyptian desert after the loss of her husband. Through an unexpected incident, she may have changed the history of fabric in human history. Follow her as she continues her journey through 4th century Gaul and beyond.

Meet Anna, a young Dutch widow in 17th century Amsterdam who joins a community of Beguines, laywomen living in community to serve God. Is she cut out for this life? She also ends up far from home and takes her knitting with her.

Follow the path of Nan Westerhill, a familiar face from The Prayer Shawl Chronicles series, as she lands in Amsterdam hoping to finally find her purpose in life. She answers what she thinks is a call to lay ministry, but she finds a very different life on the cobblestone streets of another European city.

Through a trio of interconnected tales set in medieval Spain, the threads of knitting history are woven together, connecting the history of knitting in Egypt with the story of knitting in Spain, where knitting next pops up. Catalina, a young artisan working for the Spanish royal court, perhaps has a hand in spreading knitting to Northern Europe, based on skills passed on from her Visigoth and Arab ancestors.

Knitting Through Time is a tapestry of storytelling that blends history, imagination, and the enduring allure of knitting. This novel invites readers on a journey through time and across cultures, where every stitch tells a story of resilience, creativity, and the timeless bond of human connection.

Welcome to my Author Page on Goodreads! I am a full time writer working on my farm just outside Knoxville, Tennessee. I'm the mom of two young adults and a pre-teen, and I'm married to a great guy. We share our home with a Westie and two tabby cats, who keep life interesting at all times.

I've been writing since I was five years old, and writing has figured into my career one way or another my working life My life journey has taken me through law school, a brief career as a trial lawyer, seminary, and work as a Christian formation director and curriculum developer. Now that (most) college tuition bills are paid, I've devoted myself to my lifelong dream of writing novels.

My first young adult novel is Runaway Kitty, based on lots of the drama and situations I saw on a daily basis as a mom of teens. This might turn into a series. We'll see.

My next novel will be a period piece on the economic boom of the 1980's - and the sobering fall of the Yuppie glory days in the 1990's. The main character, Ginger, suddenly loses everything and ends up in Switzerland, Berlin, and Moscow as she tries to recover her money and her life. Stay tuned!

My non-fiction curriculum books are:

Earth Our Garden Home: Creation Care Lessons for Children, and

Wild Faith: A Creation Care Curriculum for Youth.

What a Disappointment

I started off loving this book. When Anna met the sailor I was excited for her but when she abandoned the potential relationship for a life with God, which I totally get. I did not expect that not even a chapter later, she would meet and marry a man that she met at a random coffee shop…what happened to the sailor, to a life dedicated to God?? Instead Anna throws caution to the wind…defies the religious order for the love of a man from the coffee shop …. This book was an incredible waste of my valuable time and lost all it meaning so I ditched the book!
