All hockey players dream of hoisting the Stanley Cup and winning a gold medal for their home country. Ken Morrow was the first to accomplish both feats in the same year, playing for the United States in the "Miracle on Ice" in 1980 at Lake Placid, then following that up by claiming the Cup with the New York Islanders at the conclusion of his rookie season. Morrow would go on to win three more consecutive titles with that Islanders dynasty and play his entire 10-season NHL career on Long Island as an elite, steadfast defenseman. In a new memoir, Morrow gives hockey fans a front-row seat to one of the most remarkable stretches of dominance in NHL history. Inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 1995, Morrow has been director of pro scouting for the Isles since 1992 and shares more than 40 years of hockey lore in this fascinating chronicle of a legendary life in hockey. Co-authored by longtime hockey writer Allan Kreda, this autobiography is a must-read for fans of the Blue and Orange.
The story is fantastic (gold medal followed by 4 Stanley Cups) and as an 80’s Islanders fan and a person who vividly remembers watching the 1980 Olympic run I greatly appreciated this book. Even better is that the book is well written (which I find is not often the case with sports memoirs).
An enjoyable journey through the life of an underrated, but quite interesting hockey player, Ken Morrow. Deftly told to journalist Allan Kreda, who livened the story up with his insights gleaned upon many years as a devoted pucks fan, and talented writer who has covered the sport consistently with enthusiasm. Must read for hockey fans, both of the Islanders and Rangers, who feature prominently in the book. An also nostalgic look back at the amazing run of the gold-medal winning 1980 USA Olympic Hockey Team.
I'm an 80s Islanders fan, so yes, I'm a little biased with the 4 stars there. For almost anyone else, I'm not sure this is the book for you. Others might get some enjoyment out of the first third of the book. It's very good with Morrow's history and leading up to the 1980 Olympics and his stories from that time, but once you get beyond that you probably aren't going to care about the yearly dissection of Islanders seasons. But, I did, so 4 stars.
Another great sports autobiography by another great Miracle on Ice and Stanley Cup champion Ken Morrow. In reading this I felt like I was having a conversation with Ken and his teammates about hockey, life, and their favorite card game! A must read for any hockey fan. 5.0 bookworms
