Returning for another collaborative effort by Jørn Lier Horst and Thomas Enger, I was pleased with the outcome. In this fifth novel from the Blix-Ramm series, the authors have once again delivered a stunning mystery. Former police detective Alexander Blix is getting back on his feet when he receives a mysterious phone call about a cold case. The caller has provided him some key intel that Blix hopes to use to solve the case. His friend, former journalist, Emma Ramm, has her hands full when she is asked by a teenage girl to examine the case against her step-father, who is said to have murdered a young woman and torched the crime scene. As Blix and Ramm work their respective cases, their lives intertwine at times, leaving them to assist one another. A great addition to the series, as Horst and Enger dazzle once again together.

While Blix tries to get the authorities involved, they want nothing to do with the Eie case or their tarnished detective. Still, the kidnapper pursues Blix, providing him details of a new victim and sharing details about Blix’s own life he had buried long ago.
While Blix and Emma rely on one another, these two investigations seem destined to bring them nothing but grief. Then a fingerprint appears on a piece of evidence and Blix is tied into the disappearance. Could this be a sign and might Emma be the only one who can save him? A powerful story that kept me reading well into the evening! Horst and Enger deliver in an impactful manner.

Horst over the years and discovered Thomas Enger through this collaboration. These two Norwegian crime writers have a way of telling a story that keeps the reader hooked until the final page. A well-crafted narrative leads the reader on an adventure where nothing is quite as it seems, with the story gaining momentum at the least expected time. Character work is great and keeps the reader entertained as things develop on all levels. Plot points provide surprises as the story progresses and leaves the reader to guess, sometimes incorrectly, as the twists pile up. Perhaps the greatest thing about this book (and series) is that while it has been translated from Norwegian, the storytelling is seamless, as though the authors wrote it in English from the outset.
Brilliant work and it leaves me eager to read the next novel.

Twee jaar geleden leidde Alexander Blix het onderzoek naar de vermissing van de jonge moeder Elisabeth Eie. De zaak kwam tot stilstand toen Blix’ eigen dochter Iselin om het leven kwam en hij werd gearresteerd na het wreken van haar dood.
Blix is inmiddels vrij uit de gevangenis. En degene die Elisabeth Eie heeft vermoord heeft hém nu gevonden.
Blix biedt de politie zijn hulp aan, maar die wil niets meer met hem te maken hebben. Ook al is hij inmiddels vrijgesproken, zijn carrière in de misdaadbestrijding is voorbij. Maar de moordenaar van Elisabeth blijft Blix lokken naar zijn volgende slachtoffers, én hij maakt duidelijk dat hij details over Blix’ privéleven weet die hij met niemand ooit heeft gedeeld.
Journalist Emma Ramm is op haar beurt benaderd door het tienermeisje Carmen. Haar stiefvader is gearresteerd op verdenking van de moord op een jeugdvriend. Maar er is geen lichaam, noch zijn er andere verdachten.
'Schuld' is het vijfde deel van de Blix en Ramm serie en ook dit deel las weer enorm vlot! Je leest weer over een oudere zaak waar Blix bij betrokken is geweest. Zijn dochter is rond die tijd ook om het leven gekomen en hier heeft Blix het nog steeds enorm moeilijk mee. Hierdoor kwam de oude vermissingszaak stil te liggen, maar de dader lijkt nu dus Blix gevonden te hebben en hierover lees je al heel snel. De spanning is dus vrijwel meteen voelbaar.
Ondertussen loopt er ook nog een andere moordzaak waar Emma Ramm bij betrokken is. Er zijn in dit verhaal dus twee verschillende dingen aan de hand en beide zijn heel erg interessant! Emma en Blix hebben weer heel erg veel contact met elkaar en proberen de beide zaken op te lossen.
In dit deel draait het heel erg veel om Blix, het lijkt dat hij persoonlijk betrokken is bij de vreemde zaken en zijn verleden speelt een erg grote rol. Het is dus zeker verstandig om met deze serie bij het eerste deel te beginnen, anders mis je de nodige voorgeschiedenis.
Dit deel was weer heel erg fijn om te lezen en ik had het dan ook binnen enkele uren uit. Op naar deel zes dus!

Nachdem Alexander Blix von dem Mordvorwurf freigesprochen wurde, kann er sein altes Leben nicht einfach wieder aufnehmen. Bei der Polizei ist er nicht mehr beschäftigt und die meisten der alten Kollegen lassen ihn spüren, dass er nicht mehr dazugehört. Auch Emma Ramm hat ihre Anstellung als Journalistin aufgegeben. Dennoch kommt sie der Bitte um Hilfe der jungen Carmen nach. Diese glaubt, ihr Stiefvater sei unschuldig im Gefängnis. Den Mord, dessen er beschuldigt wird, könne er nicht begangen haben. Blix dagegen ist am Rande einer Depression. Sein Psychologe hat ihm geraten, sich einen Hund anzuschaffen. Blix mag nicht zugeben, dass er den Rat befolgt hat. Gleichzeitig beschäftigt er sich mit einer Reihe von Frauenmorden, die ihm seltsam nahe sind.
Im fünften Band der Reihe müssen Alexander Blix und Emma Ramm ihr Leben umstellen. Bei Emma ist es eher eine freiwillige Entscheidung, während Blix gezwungen wurde. Ohne Arbeit ist Blix auch ohne Plan. Zwar will er sein Leben wieder in den Griff kriegen, doch die Trauer um seine Tochter ist noch groß. Und wenn eine alte Beschäftigung zwangsweise abgeschlossen ist, kann nicht erwartet werden, dass sofort etwas Neues da ist. Ein Gefühl der Beklemmung verfolgt ihn. Da hilft ihm auch nicht, dass der Psychologe ihm einen weiteren Rat erteilt: Er soll seinen unter Demenz leidenden Vater treffen.
Nachdem sich die Lebensumstände von Alexander Blix in den letzten Bänden der Reihe immer weiter verschlechtert haben, ist er nun wohl am Tiefpunkt und damit auch einem Wendepunkt angekommen. Er muss sich mit seiner Vergangenheit auseinandersetzen. Dagegen wirkt Emma Ramm viel gesettelter und mit sich im Reinen. Blix muss auch damit klarkommen, dass er bei der Polizei eben nicht mehr dabei ist. Seine Fähigkeiten als Ermittler hat er dennoch nicht verloren. Und es entspinnt sich ein spannender und für Blix sehr persönlicher Fall. Emma Ramm ist nicht weniger gewitzt und sie kümmert sich um die Ungereimtheiten der anderen Mordsache. Auch wenn nicht alles in diesem Thriller, so verläuft wie man es erhofft, so ist die Story doch packend und sie ermöglicht am Schluss einen neuen Anfang.

Wat een goed boek weer! Heel moeilijk aan de kant te leggen door de korte hoofdstukken en mini cliffhangers.

Offer är en välskriven och spännande norsk deckare. Jag kan inte urskilja vem av Horst och Enger som skrivit vad, men kan konstatera att de är en duo som får till riktigt bra deckare tillsammans. Jag har läst de fyra tidigare delarna och serien har åkt upp på min ”autobuy”-lista, dvs jag köper de nya delarna så fort de kommer ut. Det här är en serie som håller väldigt hög kvalitet rätt igenom, och det är ovanligt.
När jag hade läst del 3, Slagside, så var jag osäker på om serien skulle fortsätta, så jag är glad att den gjorde det. De har på ett skickligt och trovärdigt sätt låtit karaktärerna utvecklas och påverkas av alla tidigare händelser. Som läsare tror jag på utvecklingen. Styrkan i den här serien, inte minst i Offer, är karaktärerna Alexander Blix och Emma Ramm. De fortsätter vara personer som jag vill läsa mer om.
Mysteriet är bra uppbyggt, och jag kunde inte gissa upplösningen. Det är en obehaglig historia, och personerna som figurerar är skadade och instabila. Just sådana personer är obehagligt att läsa om. Om jag ska invända något är det att det hela ligger nära Blix som person (vilket framgår redan av förlagets beskrivning av boken), vilket är alltför vanligt i deckargenren. Men författarna lyckas ändå göra det trovärdigt. Det gör också att man gradvis lär känna både Blix mer, i synnerhet är hans barndom och relation till föräldrarna i fokus. Något som jag inte gjort är att gå tillbaka till tidigare delar och se om det här caset nämns, men jag antar att det gör det.
Jag har skrivit om de fyra tidigare, Nullpunkt, Røykteppe, Slagside och Arr som jag läst på norska. De finns även utgivna på svenska. Det verkar troligt att det kommer fler delar i serien. Jag kommer med all säkerhet läsa nästa också.

Wow.... Am Anfang fiel es etwas schwer, in die Story "reinzukommen" und auch der Schreibstil ist etwas "eigen"... und dann wollte ich das Buch gar nicht mehr aus der Hand legen. Das Buch war ein Geschenk, hab erst hinterher gesehen, das es Teil 5 einer Reihe ist - es "fehlt" jedoch nichts logisches innerhalb der Geschichte. Sehr spannend und logisch aufgebaut, ohne das Ende vorhersehen zu können.

I think I liked this one best so far in the series. We carry on where we left off following Blix and Ramm. Blix is being tormented by a murderer - who is leading him to bodies, leaving him clues, breaking into his house and messing with his things etc. Ramm has been approached by a teenage girl looking for help in proving her step father's innocence in the murder of his secret (not so secret) lover. All very interesting and complicated.
I enjoyed reading more with grumpy Blix in it. He is so likeable in his gruff and unfriendly way, you just feel really sorry for him. Ramm obviously knows everything about him and completely understands his offhandedness, so she sticks with him when most others wouldn't.
I loved the romance element in this one. I loved the stories being linked the way they were. And I loved the writing.

I enjoyed reading more with grumpy Blix in it. He is so likeable in his gruff and unfriendly way, you just feel really sorry for him. Ramm obviously knows everything about him and completely understands his offhandedness, so she sticks with him when most others wouldn't.
I loved the romance element in this one. I loved the stories being linked the way they were. And I loved the writing.

Victim is the 5th book in the Alexander Blix and Emma Ramm series, and we find them both at a bit of a crossroads. After previous events Blix is no longer in the police force and finds himself at a bit of a loose end with only visits to his psychologist and walks with his dog Terry to look forward to. Emma has also given up her job as a reporter and is trying to decide what to do next.
When Emma is contacted by a young girl asking for her help to prove that her stepfather was not guilty of murder it certainly sparks her interest. The body of the victim has not been found but as far as the police are concerned there are no other suspects and even his wife seems to be distancing herself from the whole thing and warns Emma off digging any further. Emma is determined to get to the truth, but this leads her to uncover secrets that could harm rather than help. When the truth is uncovered it is not what you expect.
Its not long before Blix is smack bang in the middle of an investigation when the body of a missing woman is discovered. It was a case he was involved in several years before and when the killer starts to contact him and leave clues for him to understand, the police wonder just how involved he really is. The investigation forces him to confront his own past and events from his childhood that are quite disturbing. As the killers’ motives are uncovered its clear they believe they are doing the world a favour. What you don’t know is if they are trying to frame Blix or want him to catch them.
Even with Emma and Blix seemingly working on different cases they still manage to bounce ideas off each other and have each other’s back when needed. Whilst we always knew parts of Emma’s past it was interesting to see why Blix is the way he is and understand his family dynamic. Neither one of them is willing to give up on their respective investigations despite warnings and even threats to their lives.
This series is one of my favourites as there is plenty to keep you hooked. I love the dynamic between Emma and Blix and the addition of Terry has brought out a slightly different side to Blix. Once again Thomas Enger and Jørn Lier Horst have created a seamless story that draws on the readers emotions and has you intrigued as to see what is next for the duo.

Alexander Blix’s daughter, Iselin, was killed. He spent eight months in prison for killing her murderer before getting acquitted.
Now, he is out prison, but also out of the police force and it’s fair to say he is feeling lost.
One day, he receives a phone call from a man asking if he received his letter. Blix’s case was widely publicized and ever since, he has been receiving many letters from people. He disregards majority of them as junk and simply throws them away.
However, what the caller says in the phone call chills Blix to the bone. He returns to the recycling bin and finds the letter. When he opens it, he sees a photo of Elisabeth Eie, a mother who has been missing, presumed dead, for more than two years.
When Blix was a police officer, he was investigating the disappearance of Elisabeth Eie.
Something that the caller says on the phone makes Blix think that it’s not a hoax and that there could be more bodies.
The phone calls escalate and it appears that the caller knows a lot about Blix’s personal life. The police want nothing to do with Blix and tell him to keep away, but it appears that he can’t.
Meanwhile, Emma Ramm, a former journalist, is also trying to find another pursuit in life. When a teenage girl, Carmen Prytz, calls her, asking to look into her stepfather’s case, Emma is torn. She decided to quit journalism, and yet, something is pulling her back towards her old profession.
It would appear that Blix and Ramm can only rely on each other to solve these cases. Can they do it?
I simply LOVE this series.
I got really sucked into the story, especially finding out about Blix’s horrific childhood experiences. He’s been through so much already and then to lose a child, it’s like a punch to the gut. I really felt for him throughout the book.
As I was reading the book, one question kept popping into my head: what makes a good mother? This book really focuses on the topic of parenthood and how people raise and treat their children.
It is the fifth book in the Blix and Ramm series, but it’s the best one so far! I definitely recommend it.

December 1, 2024Een nieuwe boek in de serie rond Alexander en Emma, een serie die vanaf zijn eerste boek er steeds op zit. Schuld is geen thriller vol actie, toch met een hoog tempo maar vooral het psychologische aspect viert hoogtij in dit boek.
Blix is een gebroken man en dat merk je aan alles. Angst om zijn stem te gebruiken, zijn humeur,… het feit dat hij geen politie meer is.
Verloren, zo lijkt hij wel maar dan komt daar verandering in en kruipt hij snel weer in zijn natuurlijke houding, die van rechercheur.
Door tekeningen word Blix weer diep zijn verleden ingetrokken. En ontdekt je als lezer nog een extra laag van Blix en mede dankzij Emma, waarmee Blix een sterke connectie heeft, komen ze achter het waar, wie en vooral het waarom.
Ook al blijft het eerste deel mijn favoriete boek, dit duo - Blix & Ramm - zorgen steeds voor een goed boek. De schrijfstijl - die toch echt wel heel sterk is - van beide auteurs zal er natuurlijk ook wel voor iets tussen zitten. Die was weer vlot, spannend, makkelijk leesbaar dankzij de korte hoofdstukken,… kortom weer een geweldige lees.

Bedankt @awbrunathrillers voor dit recensie-exemplaar. “Schuld” is het nieuwe boek van schrijversduo Jørn Lier Horst en Thomas Enger. Dit is het vijfde deel in de “Blix & Ramm”-serie. Een geweldige serie, en ik kon ook niet wachten om dit deel te lezen.
Twee jaar geleden leidde Alexander Blix het onderzoek naar de vermissing van de jonge moeder Elisabeth Eie. De zaak kwam tot stilstand toen Blix’ eigen dochter om het leven kwam en hij werd gearresteerd na het wreken van haar dood.
Blix is inmiddels vrij uit de gevangenis. Hij biedt de politie zijn hulp aan, maar die wil niets meer met hem te maken hebben. Ook al is hij inmiddels vrijgesproken, zijn carrière in de misdaadbestrijding is voorbij. Maar de moordenaar van Elisabeth heeft hém nu gevonden en lokt hem naar zijn volgende slachtoffers. Hij maakt bovendien duidelijk dat hij details over Blix’ privéleven weet die hij met niemand ooit heeft gedeeld.
Journalist Emma Ramm is op haar beurt benaderd door het tienermeisje Carmen. Haar stiefvader is gearresteerd op verdenking van moord. Maar er is geen lichaam, noch zijn er andere verdachten.

Ik vond dit wederom weer een erg goed boek, ik zat op het puntje van m’n stoel. Deze serie is een dikke aanrader! Ik geef hem 4,5⭐️.

Jørn Lier Horst and Thomas Enger are incredibly talented, established authors in their own right, but as the co-authors of the Blix and Ramm series, they are quite the dynamic duo, and oh my, what gripping, tension filled books they turn out.

Life has changed for Blix, obviously, since his release from prison. Ditto Emma Ramm, who no longer works in journalism. Fate, however, conspires and it's not long before they find themselves embroiled in separate investigations.
What follows is an extremely complex, twisty nordic thriller. I thought I had it figured out twice, but I was wrong on both counts.
This series gets better book by book. As long as the dynamic duo keep on writing them, I will keep on reading them.

Blix en Ramm komen in een situatie te zitten die ze in eerste instantie niet wilden. Naar mate de tijd vorderd besluiten ze het volledig te gaan onderzoeken. Blix privéleven wordt hierbij ook flink in het onderzoek betrokken.
Het is een ontzettend spannend boek. Pas bij hoofdstuk 60 vielen voor mij pas wat kwartjes. Het wordt dat hoofdstuk ook beetje bij beetje ontrafelt.

En helt grei spenningsroman. Ikke opplagt for tidlig hvem som er gjerningspersonen, og velskrevet nok. Men alle ellipsene! Holdt på å bli sprø av dem. Totalt unødvendig. (Og om noen lurer på hva ellipser er, så er det tre prikker ...)

Die Bücher um das norwegische Duo Blix & Ramm sind echte Pageturner. Dies gilt auch für den fünften Teil, der Vorfreude auf einen hoffentlich sechsten Teil macht (allerdings den genialen dritten Teil (6 von 5 möglichen Sternen) nicht erreicht).

The quite brilliant Jørn Lier Horst and Thomas Enger writing partnership is back in business with instalment five of the sublime Blix and Ramm series - a couple of characters who make a formidable partnership all of their own. Picking up from one of the best-selling duo's classic cliff-hangers at the end of book four, Stigma, Blix is a free man, but feeling there is little light at the end of the tunnel now his police days are over. In many ways, his young friend Emma Ramm is also at a crossroads in her life. Both of them are about to find a new sense of purpose.
The story unfurls beautifully in two threads around the crimes they are investigating, with Blix and Ramm going their own way, and coming back together to help each other work through knotty problems in the highly enjoyable way they can - which has not always been the case in the course of the series. This is peak Blix and Ramm, where their special talents complement each other to solve a tricky current investigation, and a series of shocking cold case abductions/murders which you gradually learn are related to tragedies in Blix's own life.
Fascinating themes of family, motherhood, the impact of dysfunctional parental relationships, and unresolved trauma echo through both sides of the story, and there is a lovely character-led element for delicious depth. Blix has always remained a bit of a puzzle, largely on a path to self-destruction: for the first time, our novelist duo delve into the things that have shaped him into the man he is, and I found that very emotional - especially when you discover he is still capable of redemption. I was unable to look away until all the twists and turns had worked out. The tension is pitch perfect, the clever red herrings are nicely misdirecting, and the climax is edge-of-your-seat heaven. Superb translation work from Megan Turney too.

Absolutely my favourite one yet (yes, I know I am always saying that), and this time I am in love with the little cliff-hanger guys... roll on book six.
