Kohta Hirano (平野 耕太 Hirano Kōta) is a Japanese mangaka most famous for his manga Hellsing. Starting his career first as a mangaka's assistant (self-described as "horrible" and "lazy" in said assistant position), and later an H manga artist, he went on to enjoy somewhat limited success with other relatively unknown manga titles such as Angel Dust, Coyote, Gun Mania and Hi-Tension. His first major success came with his manga series Hellsing, which got its start and was subsequently serialized in a monthly manga magazine, Young King OURs, towards the latter half of 1997.
The same creator did Hellsing, and I think I'll have at least one of the same complaints that I had about Hellsing. When every character looks the same (or nearly the same) I sometimes have trouble tracking who is who.
The basic story, which does move forward in this volume, is that warriors are picked from Earth at various periods in history. They are planted in a land where elves and goblins exist.
Drifters are those from Earth who have not lost their humanity and have not joined the Black Lord's war to destroy the world. The battle in the village is well planed and thought out, but I think this series will have to be shorter than Hellsing. The story is fine, but I don't think it can be supported for 10-12 volumes.
The story is getting much better, more streamlined into the three main characters with a great goal of taking over a country. I don't have any issues with it. What could have been a long drawn out affair is ruthlessly accomplished in only a few episodes, building upon each success with such insane battlelust that even I'm starting to see a little red. It's delightful. Their tactics are more than sound, and the insistence on using solid military reasoning makes the manga stand out brilliantly.
Of course, the art kicks serious ass. It's a study in glorious insanity. The eyes amazing. I can't wait to see where it takes me, now. I should really just trust in the author. I'll treat the first volume as more of a setup and a taste of violence, in media res.
The plot thickens, as they say, and we also get to know more about our three main Drifters: Shimazu Toyohisa, the noble fool with a death wish, not as much of an idiot as it seems; Oda Nobunaga, Demon Lord of the 6th Heaven, the shrewd old strategist who sees himself as a very bad man (perhaps rightly so); Nasu no Yoishi, skilled archer and fearsome fighter, oh so cute and oh so traumatized by his experiences in the Genpei war, serving under Minamoto no Yoshitsune*. I worry a bit about Yoishi, because he has to do some things similar to what traumatized him, and he's aware of it. I don't want ma boy to get hurt!
The Drifters help the elves gain back their women and their dignity, with Nobu plotting to take over the country and install Toyo as king. Meanwhile, the Black King gathers his forces and "Offscourings" (or "Ends"): also humans who got sucked into this realm, people who suffered treason, torture and death, who experienced the worst of humanity and died with remorse in their hearts, nurturing a burning hatred for all humans. They also wield some supernatural powers, in difference to our heroes (??), who have to rely on their fighting skills and tactical experience - well, and the occasional help from some handy magicians.
Seeing Nobunaga plotting his strategies is a thing of beauty and the dirty old man steals the show. The references to Japanese history are a-plenty and I'm glad I read up on it between watching the anime and reading the manga. In typical Hirano fashion, there's some crass humour among the bloodshed, and some of his characters look slightly familiar (E.A.S.Y. gives me some serious Girlycard vibes). Anyway, I love his style, so of course I love this as well.
*Yoshitsune got transported to this world, too - and he's a jerk and needs to suffer. Plenty. (Btw, when watching the anime, at first I thought his German VA was hamming it up a bit much. After reading the manga, I think I was wrong; he really is that insufferable.)
Much better! Volume 2's linear narrative is much easier to follow than the first installment, and it allows its characters to settle into a more natural dynamic. The strange father/son relationship between Toyohisa and Nobunaga is particularly fascinating, and I really look forward to see how Hirano develops the two of them--one a ruthless strategist, the other a noble but formidable warrior. There's still an epic feel to the story, but I'm glad Volume 2 only focused on a few core characters, promising that other plotlines and character arcs will get their chance to shine.
Thankfully there's much more to this one than the first. Diving further into what makes our three leads tick helps a lot. Nobunaga is a trip, he's a selfish cunning old man who demands to be the villain he wants to be but also sees opportunity waging war. Toyohishia is a fine protagonist, he's a bit simple, but honorable. Yoichi has some history we need to dive into later.
The elf revolt is overdue, and it's exciting seeing their guerilla tactics overcome the better equipped forces. Warfare is a long term game, and I hope they pace themselves. Finding out the origins of the Oct felt like a American dad cutaway tho "Man this militaristic occult society seems pretty established, I wonder who set them up- it's Hitler, it's gotta be Hitler isn't it?" Hiarano once again having the shadow of Hellsing over this.

Drifters seems to be moving along quicker than Hellsing did. Hirano does seem to have a fixation on Hitler as it's hinted at that he's the big bad behind everything here too. I hope that's a red herring. Anyway, historical people from the real world wind up in this fantasy world where everyone is at war. We fixate on these 3 Drifters who are rising the elves up in rebellion.
More battles, more bloodshed, more politics. The story has just started unraveling, and it seems there is a long way to go before we can see an end to this. It is already placed in a huge fantasy world where all magical and mythological creatures exist. Swords and sorcery clashes and mixes together. Once again have to agree that this series is heading in a very promising manner. The strategist Oda steals the show, even though it seems Toyohisa is the main character in this.
The story becomes clearer in this volume, but still leaves a lot to be desired. Motivations are still a mystery, despite lots of exposition. The high note is Oda Nobunaga -- Hirano's portrayal is very cool, and is the main reason I keep reading.
The book was good it had basically good guys and bad guys. The reason i thought it was good is that it had lots of action and fighting. If you like manga and like action/fighting books this book would be good for u
