From a remote village perched on Arctic permafrost to the Badlands of South Dakota, searching for answers about his brother sets Arliss Cutter on an icy trail of murder and madness into the darkest heart of the Alaskan wilderness.

In the Inupiaq village of Wainwright on the Arctic Ocean, two teenagers discover a frozen body in the permafrost wall of their family’s cellar. They recognize the face through the ice. It is the face of a young woman who went missing—two years ago . . .

In South Dakota, Arliss Cutter searches for answers surrounding his brother’s mysterious death. But his visit only raises more questions without any leads. Until he returns to Alaska—and learns that his brother had something in common with the frozen body in the ice cellar . . .

Inside the young woman’s pocket is a fossilized animal tooth—similar to the one Arliss’s brother picked up on a trip to South Dakota. A bizarre coincidence? Or are the two connected somehow? Before Arliss can figure it out, his brother’s widow and children become the targets of a brutal home invasion. Arliss arrives on the scene in time to save them—but his actions trigger a larger investigation that puts his own neck on the line. From South Dakota to Anchorage to the Inupiaq villages of the Arctic, Arliss follows this bloodstained trail of clues to a remote lodge on the banks of the Kobuk River. Here, in this unforgiving wilderness, he will find the answers he seeks. Here, in this untamed, often violent land, he will come face to face with the terrible truth—and the man behind his brother’s murder . . .

Marc Cameron creates another action-packed, suspenseful, and shocking crime thriller in Bad River, the sixth book in the Arliss Cutter series. What could possibly connect a frozen body in the permafrost wall of a family’s ice cellar and Cutter’s search for answers surrounding his brother’s death two years ago? Before there’s any answers, a person of interest dies and Cutter’s brother’s family is the target of a home invasion. At the same time, the Alaska Fugitive Task Force is trying to track down a man wanted for crimes against children. While most of the book is set in Anchorage, there are forays into various villages on the North Slope as well as a trip to South Dakota.

Supervisory Deputy US Marshall Arliss Cutter and his partner Deputy Lola Teariki are very different characters. Cutter is experienced, uncomfortable with compliments, a fantastic tracker, no-nonsense, and somewhat surly. However, he can also be overprotective and have a way of connecting with innocent victims. He also believes keeping a secret is synonymous with telling a lie. Lola works out a lot, has a bubbly personality, and wants assignments that are new and interesting. She also wants to glean all possible knowledge from Cutter. They have flaws and virtues just like everyone else. Readers get a better sense of his sister-in-law, Mim, and her children, as well as Detective Jan Hough who is stationed on the North Slope. Their characters grew and had more depth. I also liked that readers got to see some new developments in Cutter’s and Lola’s personal lives.

The author does a great job of making the reader feel transported to early fall in Alaska. I felt as though I was living the events alongside the characters. From mud, fog, and snow to polar bears and criminals, the atmosphere was fantastic. He brings to life the dangers, challenges, and adrenaline-charged events that are faced by the U.S. Marshals as well as the police in Anchorage and the North Slope. I am also happy to see some closure regarding some ongoing open questions from previous books in the series.

This powerful page-turner kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. The plot moves at a blistering pace with plenty of action and a couple of brutal and violent fights. Just when a reader thinks the situation can’t get any worse, it does. Readers are transported into the dark and terrifying world of the victims, the criminals, and the investigators. Themes include respect, friendship, mentorship, family, greed, murder, and much more. The author has included a couple of recipes at the end of the novel as well as some book club discussion questions.

Overall, this tense, exciting, gripping, and high-octane book takes readers on an emotional rollercoaster. If you enjoy action thrillers that have both strong male and female characters, then this may be the series for you. I can’t wait to find out what is next for Cutter and Lola. Readers that enjoy action crime thrillers will likely enjoy Cameron’s writing. This is an outstanding series.

Kensington Books and Marc Cameron provided a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. The publication date is currently set for July 23, 2024. This review was originally posted at Mystery and Suspense Magazine.

Well the gangs all back for this newest installment. US Marshalls, Arliss and Lola (love Lola!!!), are back tracking down the bad guys in AK. Arliss’s long-time, secret crush and widowed sister-in-law, Mim, along with the kids, Constance and the twins, Matthew and Michael, are also back to support Arliss in his continued search to find out what happened to his brother, Ethan, and Mim’s husband. This is something that has been a thread in the series from pretty much the start and its why Arliss transferred to AK. It was a tragedy that has deeply affected Arliss and that he desperately wants the answers to. Finding out the truth has been challenging though because Ethan’s employers have been hampering Arliss and Mim, pretty much from the get-go.

The book summary lays out the primary storyline of Arliss discovering that the discovery of a local teenaged girl encased in ice is linked to Ethan. It also introduces the secondary storyline of the kids being targeted in a home invasion and being in danger. Oh dear!!! This does not bode well for the scumbags who went after Arliss Cutter’s loved ones. Think Papa Bear and his cubs and that is the scenario of Arliss Cutter going after those scumbags.

Most of the story revolves around investigating the link between the dead girl and Ethan, which takes Arliss and Mim to South Dakota to meet the only person who survived the oil rig explosion that killed Ethan. This trip triggers a lot more than the ones behind Ethan’s death. Cameron digs deeper into all that makes up Arliss and allows the reader to learn more about Arliss. I love the passages of Arliss’s childhood and growing up with Ethan and being raised by Grumpy (paternal grandfather). This continued character development of Arliss, as well as the rest of the ensemble cast, has been well done throughout the series. The ending is laid out in classic Arliss Cutter style: fast, exciting, scary and totally satisfying. Ooohhh!!! Those final scenes? AMAZING!!! A good lead-in the next installment.

I really enjoy this series. Not only because of life in AK and all the interesting environmental challenges either, which is probably one of my fave locales for a great crime thriller and murder mystery, which Cameron does really well. However, the best part of this series is, by far, Arliss Cutter! Love his snarky attitude towards idiots, especially criminal idiots. I also love his endearing feelings for those that he loves and cares about, including those he works with and respects as well as the ones he shares DNA with. This is a fast-paced, action-packed crime thriller and murder mystery. The story kept me engrossed and the writing was classic Marc Cameron. I’m looking at an overall rating of 4.5 that I will be rounding up to a 5star review. I know I've said this before, and I always meant it at the time, but this is the best installment of the series.

Will Arliss Cutter solve his brothers murder? Will he and Mim become a couple? well if you read Bad River you may get some answers, maybe not. Marc Cameron has once again written a great suspensefilled Alaskan mystery that takes our marshall all over the place. It's a harsh place to live with a lot of crime and unforgiving nature and wildlife. But sometimes the worst things is man made. I love this series and after reading this one I really wonder what will happen next. It will be a long wait until the next adventure comes but I'm sure it will be worth the wait. The characters and the action in these books are magnificent it is almost like the author has some kind of insight in the work as a marshalll and how to live in Alaska, wait a minute. He does if memory serves me right he lives in Alaska and he used to be a marshall. I also love the Grumpy bits in these books and would love to read more about him. I can really recommend this series, it has everything you could want in a mystery. I am thankful that Kensington Publishing and Netgalley gave me this advance copy of a really good book.

US Marshall Arliss Cutler and his partner, Deputy Lola Teriki, split investigations as Culter goes after his brother’s murderer as new evidence indicates it was not an accident. And Lola Teriki follows leads to find a convicted sex offender currently making videos with underage girls. Both are fairly long investigations with well over 30 characters to follow. Cutler gets some help from a local officer, Jan Hough. There’s a lot of action in this story.

“If it’s brown, lie down. If it’s black, fight back. If it’s white, good night!”

The sixth installment of the Arliss Cutter books by Marc Cameron takes readers from Anchorage to Barrow, Alaska and down to South Dakota. Some time is also spent in the Inupiaq village of Wainright on the Arctic Ocean. Ethan’s murder is finally explained, but it comes at a cost - the safety of Cutter’s family and everyone involved in the investigation. The subplots involve local kids finding an unidentified female frozen in the ice, an investigation into child abuse and the dangers of living alongside polar bears and other dangerous wildlife.

I loved learning about:
💜Aksarnirq and Grandma Foxy and the old ones’ beliefs about its origins
💜how the geography and climate of Alaska influence this plot
💜how it’s better to rely on peripheral vision when it gets dark
💜The name for the first snow of the season
💜Nagoon berries
💜The origins of ‘Denali’ name
💜Infusion of the Inupiaq culture

As is always the case with Cameron, he leaves readers eagerly anticipating his next book.

I was gifted this copy by Kensington Publishing and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

Deputy U.S. Marshal Arliss Cutter is a skilled manhunter in Alaska he’s inching closer to finding out what happened to his brother. North of the Arctic Circle, a missing girl is found frozen in the permafrost with a clue that could connect to Arliss’ brother and lead Arliss to the truth of his brother’s death.

Look no further than Marc Cameron for an authentic thriller set in Alaska. He makes you feel every bone-chilling breath, snowflake, and ramps up your pulse.

Cameron propels the overall story with excellent characters and vignettes showcasing the supporting cast. These side stories demonstrate his prowess in creating deep, relatable characters. Bad River has everything you want in a thriller and then some.

Thank you to Kensington Publishing for the advanced copy of Bad River via NetGalley.

Bad River is the 6th book in the Arliss Cutter series, and US Marshal Cutter is on the hunt for the people who killed his brother. Simultaneously, his partner, Lola Teariki is tracking a fugitive wanted on child pornography charges. This installment almost exclusively features Cutter and his brother’s family, and the action is fast and furious as Cutter follows a new lead in his brother’s death. But Cutter’s quest for justice puts his family in grave danger. Fans of the series will not be disappointed, as Cutter’s formidable talents are put to the test against a foe with nothing left to lose. While I know Cutter is the star of this series, I’d rather have him and Lola work together, and play off each other’s strengths then have a separate plot line for each. In the end, we finally get some closure on this story arc, but there’s a new development that signals the next book. I received an ARC of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

First and foremost, a large thank you to NetGalley, Marc Cameron, and Kensington Publishing for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.

Always eager to get my hands on a book by Marc Cameron, I settled in for the latest on the Arliss Cutter series. Cameron does well taking reader to the remote communities of Alaska, where murder and mayhem are plentiful. While Cutter is working a case involving a murdered youth, he finds a clue that could connect to his brother, whose death in a mysterious explosion has yet to be settled. While Cutter follows leads, he finds himself in South Dakota trying to make sense of the last months of his brother’s life. What Arliss Cutter discovers proves more fruitful and dangerous than he could imagine. A gripping story that has a little of everything, showcasing Marc Cameron’s abilities for all!

A small Alaskan Inupiaq community will soon have the shock of its life. Two teens in Wainwright, a tiny town along the Arctic Ocean, find a body frozen in the permafrost cellar where whale meat is usually kept. They recognize the face through the ice, a young woman who disappeared two years ago. How did she end up here?

When Deputy US Marshal Arliss Cutter is called in to help, he is stunned when he finds something on the girl that reminds him of his brother, Ethan. While working this case, he cannot help but wonder if her murder could be related to his brother’s mysterious death around the same time. Further probing leads Cutter away from the Alaskan tundra and into the heart of the American Midwest.

Cutter arrives in South Dakota, searching for clues tied to his brother’s mysterious death. This does not go the way he would have hoped, only creating more issues and questions that make Ethan’s death more troublesome. Still, those fossils found on the body back in Alaska tie in to Ethan, but Arliss just cannot make the connection.

Before Arliss can make the link, his sister-in-law and her children are targeted by a brutal home attack, leaving Arliss to be a hero and try to determine if he can tie things together after all this time. Rather than find answers, Arliss opens a larger investigation that sends him back to the start. The chilling Alaskan tundra and brutal nature of the attacks help develop a great story with chilling effects. Marc Cameron is on his game once more in this novel!

There is nothing that compares to the great storytelling Marc Cameron brings to the table with this series. Mixing great thriller writing with a stunning backdrop, Cameron pulls the reader into the middle of a stunning story. The narrative builds from the outset and does not wane throughout this adventure that spans all parts of the United States. By the time things reach their climax, there are so many moving parts to account for that the reader is fully immersed in the action. Characters, both new and returning, offer the reader a great deal of entertainment throughout. I am eager to see where things are headed in this series, which never disappoints.

The plot of a Marc Cameron novel is never sedentary. He knows how to build action and suspense with every turn of the page, surprising the reader with great writing. There is no lull to the action, which only adds to the strength of the series. I hope to see more of this in the coming novels, knowing Cameron has lots yet to put to rest.

Kudos Mr. Cameron, for another strong novel that ticks all the boxes!

This series set in Alaska and featuring Deputy US Marshall Arliss Cutter is one of my favorites. This latest edition doesn't disappoint with plenty of action, as the members of various law enforcement deal with all sorts of evil bad guys while also battling the harsh climate. Cutter also pursues answers to who murdered his brother, Ethan, and the romance between Arliss and Mim heats up. I do recommend reading the series from the beginning to get the full character and plot development--they are all terrific thriller reads.

Many thanks to the author and publisher for providing me with an arc of this latest thriller via NetGalley. My review is voluntary and the opinions expressed are my own.

Bad River is the 6th book in the Arliss Cutter series from Marc Cameron.

“Cutter finds a connection between a victim in an Inupiaq village and his brother’s death. When Cutter starts digging into the connection, his brother’s widow and children become a target and Cutter gets there just in time to save them. Cutter follows the clues until he’s face-to-face with his brother’s killer.”

Cameron is a writer that has great pace. There is no let up in this story. Cutter does get some occasional sleep but he is in constant motion. Cameron captures the wildness and unpredictability of Alaska. I would not want to have to rely on bush pilots to get around. There’s a bunch of bad guys - one that is pure evil and willing to do anything to get his way. First time I’ve seen a harpoon used that way.

This can be read as a standalone but finishes a story arc from previous books. Great addition to the series.

4.5****
Having read 4 earlier Arliss Cutter novels, I look forward to reading more. Marc Cameron places the reader into the many Alaskan settings, and gives him/her a realistic feeling of being there. In BAD RIVER, Deputy US Marshall Arliss Cutter comes upon clues that may lead to the person responsible for the death of his brother, many months before. His investigation leads to many clues as to just who the killer was.
Marc Cameron, the author, was himself a US Marshall who lives in Alaska. This aids him in his ability to place the reader in Alaska, whether it be Anchorage or the frozen tundra. Through his Arliss Cutter novels the reader is able to get familiar with and appreciate Alaska and its many citizens of various backgrounds, all of whom add to the realism of his novels.
BAD RIVER is the beautifully told story of Arliss, his associates, and his brother's wife and two children, and others involved in the search for his brother's killer.
Marc Cameron's stories are beautifully told, though filled with gruesome killings which along with the many native Alaskan folks, brings Alaska to life. His novels usually end in such a way that what happens next to Arliss Cutter will most likely be revealed in his next novel. I have definitely become a fan of Cameron, almost to the point of packing up and settling down in our coldest, most wild state.

Arliss Cutter has a reputation for tracking fugitives in the Alaskan wilderness. He can tell the direction of travel, determine if there are any injuries, and more just by observing their footfall and the surroundings. But when there are no physical signs available, Cutter finds himself playing more of a guessing game than he’d like. With no signs of where the fugitive has taken his friend and no backup on the way, will Cutter guess correctly or will his friend become another victim of the criminal enterprise that killed Cutter’s brother years ago?

Marc Cameron is back with the sixth installment of the Arliss Cutter series in Bad River. Staring fan favorite Arliss Cutter and his family, along with his partner Lola, this book shows exactly why readers like me love Cameron’s work. Relatable characters, law enforcement procedurals, and vivid descriptions of the area set the stage for a thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat! This is a book about vengeance, justice, and family.

I give Bad River 5 out of 5 stars. I have enjoyed Cameron’s writing since I was first introduced to him a few years ago through his contributions to the Jack Ryan series. He is a phenomenal storyteller relying on his personal experiences both as a US Marshall and from living in Alaska to build a book I did not want to put down! I enjoy Cameron’s ability to play the long-game with the mystery around the death of Cutter’s brother. First introduced in the original Arliss Cutter book Open Carry, it feels like the mystery may be coming to an end in this sixth installment.

If you love Cameron’s other works in the Arliss Cutter, Jericho Quinn, or Jack Ryan worlds, you will love this book. Marshal’s Service investigations, life in rural Alaska, and family drama – this book really has something for everyone! While it could be read as a standalone novel, I would recommend reading the other Arliss Cutter books first – there are pieces to this story that a reader may not fully understand without the back story.

I was so excited when I saw Bad River available through NetGalley. This book releases in a little over a month – July 23rd. I am a huge Marc Cameron fan and get so excited when I have the opportunity to read his latest works early! I know you will enjoy this as much as I did!

4.5 rounded up

This book was fantastic! This is the 6th book in the author's Arliss Cutter series, but I read it as a standalone. I really enjoyed it and will be highly anticipating the 7th book.

US Marshal Arliss Cutter has been searching for answers in his brother’s mysterious death. Was it an accident, or was it murder? When the body of a young woman who's been missing for 2 years is found in the permafrost of a cellar in the Inupiaq village of Wainwright on the Arctic Ocean and she seems to have something in common with Arliss's brother he jumps on the lead. His investigation takes him to South Dakota and the remote Alaskan wilderness. As he gets closer to the truth, it becomes more dangerous. His life is in danger, but so are the lives of his brother's wife and 2 children. Can he figure out who's behind all this and put an end to it before it's too late?

This fast-paced, action-packed, adrenaline pumping book was totally unputdownable! It was full of suspense and adventure! There are multiple storylines that kept me completely engrossed, and the characters were extremely interesting. I absolutely loved the setting of Alaska and loved it even more when Cutter headed to South Dakota. I loved the writing and characters. This was a totally gripping crime thriller, and I HIGHLY recommend it!

Bad River – An Arliss Cutter Novel – Published 2024 - ***1/2 - Arliss Cutter, US Marshall in Alaska is on the trail of his brother’s murderer and his sidekick, Lola, is on the trail of a Kid Pornographer. Cameron makes the setting of Alaska come alive for me which is a lot of the charm of the book. In this book six of the series I felt the plot line was weak. Also the superhuman ability of Cutter is over the top and somewhat unbelievable. Maybe I am a wimp, but I have had busted ribs and there is no way I could do what Cutter does in this book when he is injured with them. My rating is really a three and a half rounded up to a four. Other Cameron books in this series have rated five stars. Hopefully Cameron returns to top form in the next one. Still an enjoyable read.

Arliss Cutter uses more Grumpy skills to help solve brother, Ethan’s, death with the help of the wife and courtee Mim. At the same time Lola is becoming a Cutter and doing her own courting. Alaska is so big and so many bush pilots.

I received Bad River in a Goodreads Giveaway, so I decided to tackle it quickly in order to write a timely review. I am quite pleased with my decision. Bad River is number six in the Arliss Cutter series, and I read the first five. Hopefully Mr. Cameron has more Cutter in his quiver. In the first five books the reader learns that Ethan Cutter was an engineer, who moved to Alaska to work among the North Slope oil industry; however, he died in an explosion. His brother Arliss, who is a U.S. Marshall, obtained a relocation to Anchorage, AK in order to be close to his sister-in-law Mim and his two nephews and a niece. In each book our knowledge of Ethan's death expands a bit, until it becomes the main plot thread in Bad River. Having read the first five books, I can state unequivocally that book six is the best. As is usually the case, Arliss is accompanied by his partner and understudy, Lola Teariki, and a cadre of Alaskan patrollers also play a supporting role. Jan Hough is a North Slope deputy, who also believes that Ethan's death was not accidental, and she holds a central role in the story. In addition to the investigation of Ethan's death, the book includes a subplot involving the pursuit of Eddie Dupree, a sick sex offender, and a segment that involved tracking some lost hikers. Book number six was a very enjoyable read. It contained a thrilling plot, robust action, romance, excellent descriptions of Alaskan scenery, and rich character development. Arliss Cutter is a man of honor, driven by the need to protect those in need. Hopefully the Arliss Cutter series does not end with book six.

I was enthralled with this book!

Marc Cameron is a former US Marshal and author of the Arliss Cutter novels, and many, many more.

His law enforcement career has spanned over thirty years, from uniformed police officer to mounted patrol officer and detective before becoming a US Marshal, where he served as a Deputy, Fugitive Task Force Commander, Supervisory Deputy, Senior Inspector, and Chief.

Mark's past as a US Marshal, and amazing life-experiences combined with a mastery of the English language, makes for incredible storytelling!

Arliss Cutter, the main character of the story, is out to find his brother's killer. As gritty as this story is, when speaking with Marc on the podcast interview, what develops as the story unfolds, is just the kind of things he dealt with as a US Marshal in Alaska. The realism with which he describes his scenes justifies my opening sentence of this review.

Read the book. Listen to his podcast interview #315 https://on.soundcloud.com/pzBLZqPno8Q...

Another definite 5 star rating from me on this book six in the Arlis Cutter series. There is never a dull moment when it comes to Cutter and his family and his job. Two different cases going on in this book, but of utmost importance is Cutter may finally be on course to determine and also prove who killed his brother, Ethan. Wow, so much fast moving excitement, I’m still trying to catch my breath after finishing.
I always say, in every book I read I always learn a very interesting fact or two. In this book I learned a lot about polar bears: how huge they are, what they survive on and how they attack.
I can’t wait to read the next book in this series, but alas it isn’t out yet.

In Alaska, they have a saying: "If it's black, fight back. If it's brown, lay down. If it's white, good night." Mr. Cameron makes you feel the suspense about the bears and what they can do. Arliss Cutter is a US Marshal. He first investigates the disappearance of a teenage girl. Once that is solved, other things keep happening. He wants to find out who killed his brother. There's a lot of excitement in the book and never a dull moment.

4.5 stars. I absolutely love this series and I’ve been listening out of order just to get caught up. This installment in the series brings closure to Arliss’s brother’s murder and we see the start of Arliss and his brothers wife progressing their relationship into a romantic one.

There are two cases we are following and one is the aforementioned murderer if Ethan Cutter and the other is chasing a fugitive who is one of the worst kinds… child predator.

I’ve come to expect this series to be rich in detail and the character building to be deeply rooted in past and present revelations.

Highly recommend you start with book one in the series and continue going forward!

4.5 Stars ⭐️

We are 6 books into this series and this is the book where we FINALLY get the answers that we have been waiting for. There has been an overarching storyline that has been with us since the beginning. Even though each book deals with the many different and crazy situations that Arliss (and Lola) find themselves in - we have still also been following along as Arliss and Mim try to find out what REALLY happened to Ethan. Well, I'm happy to say - without any spoilers- that the answers are finally found.

I had mixed feelings from this book. Don't get me wrong, I really did enjoy it - but for some reason I had a hard time connecting in any way shape or form with Jan (I think that's her name....the other officer from the Slope). She just really rubbed me the wrong way and I got the Heeby Jeebies every time she was around Arliss. I know, I know.....I'm sure she was a really nice person......

Regardless, this book was packed full of all kinds of action and we got the added benefit of some seriously major resolution. So, a major win in my book. Plus....there were some other things that advanced as well, *cough, cough* so I am seriously looking forward to seeing where they go from here...

Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this ARC. The opinions above are mine and mine alone.
