The book CULTURES OF THE WORLD: KOREA is a non-fiction about past and present day Korea. One of the things that I like about this book that it gives general information about Korea 10 years ago. However, it doesn't really go into detail on many of the topics, I could honestly write a book that is much more robust with the information than this book. I would also add that this book is absolutely not the best way to find out about the culture of South Korea. The only reason why I read this book completely is to mock the book later. Also, this book is somewhat biased meaning that it makes Korea look like a third-world country when that is absolutely not the case.
If I were to re-write this book, I would talk about the entertainment industry in Korea. K-Pop is extremely popular in Asia, I could talk about how the K-Pop industry is shaping Korea today. Another topic I would cover is plastic surgery in Korea. I have noticed that in South Korea you must rely on looks to get you anywhere in life, that is why that 1 in 5 women in Seoul have had plastic surgery, that number jumps to 1 in 3 when you visit the Gangnam district. As far as traditional Korean life, I would talk about family values and expectations such as respecting your elders. On a scale from 1 to 10, I would rate this book a 1.5. I expect a more thorough book which explains the diversity in beliefs of Korea today.
