The Angel & The Abyss: The Inward Journey, Books II & III

Rate this book
In 1904, 'The Book of the Law' declared the advent of a new period in the course of human history - the Aeon of Horus or Aeon of the Child. The doctrine codified in the 'Book of the Law' and numerous other Holy Books, is known as Thelema and Aleister Crowley was revealed as the Prophet of the New Aeon. In this companion to 'Initiation in the Aeon of the Child', author, J. Daniel Gunther, provides detailed and cohesive analysis of the two major spiritual crises in the career of the aspirant in the Aeon of the Child - the Knowledge & Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel and the Crossing the Abyss between the divine realms and the human.

Very well written book and companion to the first book, the way the author writes makes theses books fairly easy reads for an advanced Thelemite. The book really gets interesting near the last chapters where it describes the true knowledge and conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel a universal idea adapted by Crowley. This book is highly recommended for any one who is interested in the magickal system of the A.'.A.'.

-Disclaimer: I won this book for free through goodreads giveaways in exchange for an honest review.-

Spectacular!

A very interesting and well wrote read. Jam packed with information including: The Book of Life, spirituality, and conversations of the holy guardian angel and humans. Plus it includes helpful pictures. If you have never read a book of things based on the list above it might be a challenging read.

I will definitely be coming back to this book in the future.

Gunther works with extraordinary integrity and intellectual depth. The book is full of illustrative material and citations, which are often footnoted in the original, including the original script. The book thus literally overflows with hieroglyphs, Coptic, Hebrew, Greek, Sanskrit, and even Enochian characters. An intellectual's heart will rejoice. It is certainly a heavy and dense read, and as a non-member of the A∴A∴, I did not fully understand some things and might argue with others. Nevertheless, it was a fascinating read that I definitely did not have to force myself through. The book is supplemented with excellent correspondence tables for the Egyptian alphabet and the trigrams from Liber Trigrammaton.

If you're into Aleister Crowley and his Thelema system, this book contains a wealth of pertinent arcana. Probably not great to read start to finish, but it would no doubt be very serviceable to many as a reference.

Parts 2 and 3 of this series deals with more interesting topics that the first book: the concept of a Holy Guardian Angel, and the transcendent experience called Crossing the Abyss. Unfortunately, any useful details are only hinted at, like the author gets off teasing the reader to make himself feel awesome. As with the first book, a bit too pompous and dogmatic, but worth reading for the wealth of symbolic knowledge.
