In 1957, Melvin Berger married Gilda Shulman (now Gilda Berger), also a noted author of children's nonfiction. The two have collaborated on many books, including the ongoing Scholastic Question-and-Answer series. Writing has enabled Berger to answer many of their own questions, as well; they enjoy research and finds that working on one book almost inevitably raises enough issues to lead to another. The Bergers have two daughters and live near the beach in East Hampton, New York.

This was my FAVORITE book growing up as a child. I remember I always used to finish my classwork early from 3rd to 5th grade, JUST so I could go down to the library while the rest of the class finished the work. While in the library, I would take those rulers used as placemarkers and would sit on the floor of the library, with the book on my lap, losing myself in the lovely images and words of the author. After I went on to middle school, I NEVER forgot the book. Years later, in college, I contacted my elementary school to see if they could give me the author of the book, as I could only remember the title. They STILL had the book, but were unable to sell it to me. DETERMINED to buy this book (as I used to check it out of the library SO often, that it got to where I couldn't keep renewing it, because the librarian said I had to give other people a chance to read it), I checked out ebay. I bought the first copy I came across and have read it many times since. As a teacher, I even use the stories in the book in my tutoring sessions, as the pictures serve as an attention grabber and the stories help introduce different cultures into the child's life. I would recommend this book for ANY personal or community library!! I am DEFINITELY passing this book on down to my children one day!

I love this book. I read it when I was just in 3rd grade and it took me years to finally track it down.
