Golden Hour

Rate this book
In the medical field, the precious moments following a traumatic event in which you have the best chance of saving a life are known as the golden hour.

But being there during the golden hour doesn't mean you'll be able to save the one you love...

New Orleans native and ER nurse, Elise Dupuis knows that fact all too well. There was nothing she could do to save her fiancé, New Orleans police officer Mike Bazanac, when he was brought into her hospital with two fatal bullet wounds.

Now everyone walks around on eggshells when she comes into the room—except her brother Charlie. As Mike's partner, he bears a guilt that's spiraled him into dark pain. Charlie is lashing out, Elise is turning in, and life seems to be falling apart around them.

Caleb Warren knows what it feels like to always be on the losing end of things. A few criminal turns in his youth landed him two crap choices: mandatory service in the armed forces or jail. He chooses to enlist, and just when he finds a commander who has a little faith in him, their truck hits an IED. Caleb's training as a medic isn't enough to save the one person who's ever given a damn about him.

Now back in New Orleans as an EMT, Caleb is bound and determined to drown himself in booze and regrets. But he crosses paths with nurse Elise Dupuis and finds a woman whose passion and courage gets under his skin in a way that wakes him up and makes him want to live again.

Unfortunately, Charlie doesn't think the new EMT is good enough for his sister, and he’ll step outside the lines of the law to prove it to Elise.

Caleb has to figure out what's worth fighting for…and how far he's willing to go for the woman he loves.

I'm a fan of Steph Campbell and Liz Reinhardt, both together and separately, so I was pretty sure I'd like this one.

Elise, an ER nurse, lost her police officer fiancé (Mike) to a bullet. She'd been with him since high school and never thought she'd love anyone like that again. She meets Caleb, an EMT and former soldier, and some sparks fly. Their relationship isn't insta-love, it evolves from friendship, and I liked that. Caleb has a pretty rough past, and I liked how nonjudgmental Elise was. I also liked that Mike's memory was part of the story and it didn't morph into one of those I-love-you-more-than-him stories. I really liked Elise and Caleb together.

Elise's brother Charlie is a significant part of the book, and I really hated his character. What an awful person! The conflict he provided was a little too unbelievable, but fortunately it wasn't dragged out as long as I thought it would be. Charlie gets his own book next, but I'm not sure want to read about him.

The ending was weird. There's a situation with a woman falling into a pool, but it doesn't seem like it gets explained well enough. And the fact that Elise is a nurse seemed overlooked in that situation. And then shortly after that, the book ends. I was left saying, "huh"?

So, while there were parts I didn't like, I would recommend it for the Elise/Caleb romance.

I loved the tension of this book.
I also loved the flawed characters, the very real pain of loosing someone you love and/or surviving the ones you admired.
It was a really emotional, well written book with the plot and the characters evolving at a reasonable pace. Although I didn't cry, I really loved it.

Such a good plot and characters, but there was no follow through. I was expecting so much more out of this story. There was no ending, the book just kind of stops. Maybe there will be some follow through into the next book?

There are a few things that caught my attention because I am a nurse. EMT and Paramedics are different jobs. The terms were used as one throughout the book. Just a pet peeve of mine. It's like when medical shows make a mistake. No one really picks up on it unless you know ;) Also as an ER nurse Lise just seems so unsure of herself and it bothered me. Nurses know how to take care of drowning victims and how to assess injuries.

I absolutely love this writing duo and read every book they write. And I really enjoyed this book. There was a different kind of depth to this story than the other books they've written together. I liked the characters and I hope they continue with the series. There are some great characters to work with.

Set in New Orleans! Loved all the Louisiana talk. They really did speak the way Louisiana natives speak. Only flaw....they said county instead of parish at one point.

The setting is perfect, the characters are deep and easily depicted in my mind, and the story is full of highs and lows. I was taken in right away. I always am with Campbell/Reinhardt novels. This love story is very realistic; full of romance and heartache, but also has some evil twists. It's not easy for the characters, Elise and Caleb, to end up together, but when it's meant to be, nothing can stop them.
“The last person you were with was the one you wanted to marry. A really good guy.” I watch her face crumple. “I respect what he meant to you, Elise. I don’t expect you to jump to me and pretend he was never the one you loved.”
Campbell, Steph; Reinhardt, Liz (2014-03-23). Golden Hour (Crescent City Book 1) (Kindle Locations 2536-2538). Campbell Reinhardt. Kindle Edition.

I really liked the demons that Caleb had to struggle with to find out that his life was worth fighting for. Elise was a major catalyst for this discovery, but she helps him see that it's not just her love, but what others had to sacrifice for him to be where he is today. They saw his potential and made some tough, everlasting, choices in order for him to keep living.
I get in his face, don’t let him break eye contact, and resolve—here and now, God as my witness—to save this piece of shit, sniveling, back-talking dickhead who’s hurting in a way I understand better than anyone else. I’m sorry this message couldn’t come from a sweet but tough angel of a girl like it did for me, but I’m all Lawson’s got at this point, and I’ll have to do.
Campbell, Steph; Reinhardt, Liz (2014-03-23). Golden Hour (Crescent City Book 1) (Kindle Locations 3109-3112). Campbell Reinhardt. Kindle Edition.

Elise is tough as nails on the outside, but you can feel her crumbling to pieces on the inside. So much promise and joy is taken away from her, then her family is hit again with the death of her grandfather and they are left to deal with the Alzheimer-addled matriarch of the family. Everything she loves is taken away and she just has to deal with it.
It really hit me hard when she realized that her brother pulled out her grandmother's gardens to simplify his life. They were their grandmother's pride and she had to be 'ok' with never seeing them again. Meeting Caleb was exactly what she needed, a stranger to confide in, who knew exactly how she felt, and wanted to help her heal... help each other heal.
Death is an open, metallic, rotten, horror of a smell, and only people who’ve lived to walk away from a hospital with their hearts still pumping would be naive enough to say death smells anything like these halls.
Campbell, Steph; Reinhardt, Liz (2014-03-23). Golden Hour (Crescent City Book 1) (Kindle Locations 3311-3313). Campbell Reinhardt. Kindle Edition.

There are secondary characters that help Caleb and Elise make personal discoveries. About who there were and who they want to be. I loved each character's role. Another important element in this story is their careers, a nurse and EMT. They are handed the lives of strangers and asked to make everything better. They both compartmentalize the severity of each patient but know the sad truth that they can't save everyone.
The scene inside just feels wrong in every way.
As with most calls like this, no one standing in this room right now imagined when they woke up this morning that this would be one of the worst days of their lives.
Campbell, Steph; Reinhardt, Liz (2014-03-23). Golden Hour (Crescent City Book 1) (Kindle Locations 341-343). Campbell Reinhardt. Kindle Edition.

There were some small typos/consistency errors, and that sticks in my craw, but it doesn't take away from the story.
The teaser for the next book in the series continues on with Elise's brother, Charlie, and his lows. Campbell/Reinhart have a great way of making all these stories stand alone but encourage you to keep reading the others. I can't wait to hear Lawson's story. This character has such depth and I believe his heartbreak is going to make readers crumble.

It's a hopeful, romantic, uplifting story of the loved ones you've lost & couldn't save & a story about healing.

I really got into this story from the beginning of two souls trying to continue to live after the people they loved were taken too soon.

Elise is a nurse who's fiancé, Mike, was killed in the line of duty. She's just putting one foot in front of the other, waking up each day going to work to help save the people that are brought into her ER. She's also tired of people feeling sorry for her.

Caleb is an EMT and he's dealing with his own traumatic tour in the Army. But he's got a troubled past. He got caught on the wrong side of the law & was given an ultimatum.....either jail time or enlist. Life back in the states has him trying to drown his grief in alcohol and working as an EMT brings him face to face with Elise in the ER. Their relationship develops slowly, but just right for this storyline. We need to read about their healing, overcoming their loss before diving into the romance. And what a heart tugging ride it was. I ate up the times these two were together and the talks they had about themselves, life in general and the people they cared about.

"You miss him." There's no bigger understatement in the world. I know it. Doesn't mean it doesn't need to be said."
Her fingers move down under the cloth of my t-shirt pressing against my shoulder muscles. "With every breath I take. With every beat of my heart. I miss him. I miss him like I think it might tear me into such tiny shreds I'll never get put back together again." Her voice hitches for just a second. "It's worst when I try not to think about him. Try not to remember. But I do that because it's too painful for most everyone in my life. Too uncomfortable to hear about him, you know?" ~ Elise

This scene just ripped me up. Here they are pouring some of their hearts out & it is just a sweet, tender, gut wrenching moment.

I think I fell for Caleb the more he spoke and I ate up every word that tumbled from this guy's lips.

"There's always that one that you wish you could save more than all the others. I know every life is supposed to be equal and all that, but....f#@*. I don't give a damn if I'm supposed to feel this way or not. The fact is, there's always one that you would've done anything ~ anything ~ to save. But it doesn't matter what you wanted. Sometimes there's not a single thing you can do, you know? ~ Caleb

Now....there road isn't a smooth one. They've got their wounds to heal and Elise's brother, Charlie, isn't happy with them being together & he'll try whatever he can to get his sister away from Caleb.

I recommend you adding this book to your TBRs. I'm sure you'll get as much enjoyment out of this wonderfully written story as I did. Look forward to reading more from this author because she knows how to write one heck of a story that keeps you turning the pages.

This is the first book I have read from the writing team of Campbell Reinhart nor have I read either of their novels they had written by themselves and I was pleasantly surprised. Golden Hour was overall a well written romance that I was able to get through rather quickly. I feel in love with the characters and I wanted them to find their way through the dark and find the light they are both searching for.

Elise Dupuis has just lost the love of her life. He was a police officer and he was killed in the line of duty. She goes through the motion each day as a nurse just moving in a fog. He was her everything and now he is gone, she uses work to occupy her time. Caleb Warren is fresh out of the Army now an EMT. He has also suffered loss when his best friend was killed in front of him. He feels like he should have been the one to die as he had no family to rely on. His best friend left a wife and son and now he is left with booze and women to ease the pain. Their paths cross one night when Caleb brings in a patient to the hospital Elise works at. They eventually go out for drinks and discover they are both barely living. They both have to go through the motions of life when someone they have loved has died.

“And the loss of memories is leaving me empty. I don’t care if it’s callous, I don’t care I its greedy and heartless and shitty… I don’t want to live empty. I don’t want this shallow, porous existence. I have to fill myself up somehow, and this-this- is something I can get lost in. I can get lost in Caleb for now.”

When Elise’s brother who is a police office does some digging into Caleb’s background he doesn’t like what he sees. Caleb has come clean to Elise about his past but that doesn’t stop her over bearing brother from getting in the middle of their relationship. He blackmails Caleb to take another position leaving Elise alone again. After a couple of weeks of being separated fate brings them back together and they are determined to now let circumstances get in the way of their happiness.

“But I woke up because of you. I’m alive because of you. Now I’m gonna fight like hell for the life we could have.”

It’s a beautiful love story that will have you falling in love all over again. They have both been through the darkest hours and the heartbreak that goes with it. This story will have you believe in falling in love and finding that special someone when you thought it was impossible. That you destined to be lonely and life not worthy of love. This story is told in a dual POV and is the first installment in the Crescent City series but is a complete story. 4 stars.

Caleb and Elise are grieving and coping in their own ways throughout this novel. They both have made unhealthy choices in how they've grieved thus far, or lack thereof. Caleb enjoys his drinks and women to feel no pain. Elise chooses to not forget and is stuck in her doings of nothing. The plot flows smoothly, but at a rapid pace. The time from point A to point B is short and I'd have liked to see their story more drawn out. Charlie, Elise's brother, wants Elise to be happy, but not with Caleb. This feud also ends abruptly which although is sweet, I'd rather have seen it for better reasons. Such as being witness to his sisters true happiness or observing and believing the good in Caleb. One thing Campbell Reinhardt has always been able to do for me is pull me into the town, the environment and setting where all the action is taking place. I'm friends with the characters and feel connected with them. Their writing also gets my mind wandering and longing for the answers to secondary characters' stories. This huge aspect of their art that draws me in keeps me coming back to their work! I was content with Caleb and Elise's story and I greatly enjoyed the dual POV. I can see how they can't resist one another and there's no cliffhanger, which is an added bonus! Give this a try and find your next book crush!!

Fans of the writing duo Steph Campbell and Liz Reinhardt won’t be disappointed with Golden Hour. This was an easy read with a uniquely illustrated story. This is a hopeful and heartening story of love lost and new connections and healing. Golden Hour told the story of Caleb and Elise who were two people just existing and trying to live after losing someone loved from their life.
Caleb and Elise finding each other is not a smooth road. There are several bumps in the road that make their future not an easy one to get to.
I loved how the writing of these authors creates a mental picture for me of the city and people that are in their stories. Golden Hour is no exception. The writing clearly paints the scenes, the locations and characters, making an easy connection for the reader. New Orleans came alive for me in this book.
Although the story moved quickly and didn’t develop deep enough for me, it was enjoyable nonetheless. Although there is no cliff hanger I felt the story rushed to the end and was done before I knew it. It left me feeling like I missed something. Give this a try and find your next Book Crush. 3.0 Golden Stars

I really enjoyed the storyline & characters. They were interesting, smart, & funny. The only part that didn't work well, for me, was the cursing. There's quite a bit. However; it didn't stop me from reading on. I had to know what happens next, are these two gonna make it? Is her brother, or ghost of her finance going to cause a wedge between them? Is there new love strong enough for the challenges that arise? You'll have to read it for yourself tod the answers to these questions ... & more.

The start of a new series I hope. Interesting characters in one of my favorite cities. All just a little broken and battered like New Orleans itself. Hot romance,, hot town. Looking forward to more of this!
