Two bff's going on drive-bys and spying late at night...what could possibly go wrong?
Ashley has her best friend, Brianne, help her investigate her dad when she thinks he's hiding something-no big deal. But when they decide to spy on a guy she likes, she wishes she could take it back.
Probably more of a 3.75/5...I'm not really sure yet. This book was not exactly what I was anticipating. The book itself was a good read for the most part but there was something lacking that I couldn't quite put my finger on. The protagonist, Ashley, definitely reminded me of most high school students I know act, and her best friend Bri, was exactly how most HS best friends are portrayed in books; quirky, loud and all over the place. The writing style was very easy to follow and the story had a good mixture of romance and mystery. The friendship between Ashley and Bri was entertaining all in itself and the HS experience in the book brings me back to my own HS days. Ashley and Trent's blossoming romance in the book was something I could not stop myself from rooting for. Plus he fast pasted ending helped to make sense of some of what happened in the beginning of the book and really added a perspective in regards to the parents relationship that mended a lot of what happened. (Especially in regards to certain creepy and ill tempered people). However, the story was a little predicable in regards to the mystery blonde, the fathers job, and what occurs in the last few chapters. Trent having a dark side and a mysterious aura about him was something very expected, especially when they first met. Plus the book was so short!! Though I really enjoyed it and related to a lot of aspects to the book, I felt like there were missing aspects. I wish there was a little bit more character building and that the story as a whole was just a bit longer, 200 pages was not enough, I wanted more! (ps. I received this book viagiveaway)
Chance of Rain by Laurel Veil is an enjoyable book for young readers. It is full of excitement, fun, suspense and mystery with its fair share of detective work. The characters are adorable, and some of them will truly endear with readers.
The story idea flows along the line of one of the most painful and difficult things in life – a broken family. The pain is more acute and severe for a child who is torn between two loves. In Chance of Rain, you’ll easily get to notice the thought-process of Ashley when her dad moved out of their home. While divorce of any type can be a “deal” for parents, one is reminded through Ashley’s struggles and hurt that it is the child who gets a raw deal.
In Chance of Rain, Ashley’s father is a cop. In the line of duty he has made enemies and he is now receiving threats – to harm him and his family. To get to the bottom and unravel the whole mystery, Ashley’s dad went undercover. Ashley and her friend Brianne also carried out some detective work of their own. One of the most delightful moments of the story is the reaction of Ashley when her dad’s friend seems to have a newfound interest in her mom.
Though the story is a bit predictable, it does not rob any of the fun and excitement. It is delightfully enjoyable, and Ashley will linger on in the memory of many readers long after the last page is turned.
Ashley is a teenager with the usual teen problems. She wants her estranged parents to get back together. She has a best friend. Her mother is overprotective. The usual. Suddenly, she seems to be getting a lot of attention from a cute young man. Is her life looking up? This book seems as if it would be very appealing to teens.
I loved how this author wrote. The characters were life-like; while there was no spice, there was plenty of sizzle. There was so much stormy weather, a tornado might have sprung . . . let me check my weather station.
This story kept you on your toes until the end.. Lots of action and suspense. A cute love story with a happy ending. Would highly recommend this author.
Predictable and the writing is stilted. I didn’t love the dialogue or characters. I did finish it, though, so there was something that kept me reading.
Well this was a very good read for the most part. Ashely was quite a character and anyone who has ever raised a teenaged girl will tell you, Laurel Veil got her perfectly right. Separation and divorce is never easy and most kids will try to find a way to get their parents back together even in the worst of circumstances.
When Ashley’s dad moves out she is thrown for a loop. Her father is a cop and although he spent lots of time away she did not see this coming. She feels that the entire breakup is somehow wrong and takes it upon herself to investigate. She puts herself in more danger than she knows.
The ending is one fast paced ride and the entire book starts to make sense during the last few chapters. This is definitely not a Pulitzer Prize winner but it is a great to occupy a few hours on a rainy day.
I found Chance of Rain to be a little predictable in that you could see there was a “dark side” to Trent, but it was a great story, nonetheless. Ashley and her friend Brianne’s detective work in finding out what was going on with Ashley’s dad was great. The author hit the nail on the head in her description of what it’s like for a kid to “survive” their parents’ divorce, and throwing in the added knowledge of the underlying trouble for Ashley’s dad really made me feel bad for Ashley! Her meeting Trent and their ensuing romance was almost funny, in that I saw that potential early on, because of Ashley’s need for something to hold onto (and in typical YA fashion, she fell for the bad boy!). However, Veil’s descriptions and character development were dead-on. It was a great story, and was a quick read for me.
Laurel Veil did such a great job with the teen Ashley. I am not so far removed from the teen years and I could completely relate to the desire to first keep a family together, and to second have some independence from our parents and make our own decisions. Ashley is an excellent character because she has a strong head and great family morals.
The thing that kids very rarely understand is that all decisions big and small are made by parents with the kids' best interest in mind and in heart. Ashley's dad needed to make one of the hardest decisions as a father and as a cop to keep his family safe. He leaves the family to work undercover to protect them.
The mystery is fun and the book reads very easily. There is great editing, and the story goes fast. One thing that is so important to remember and learn is that it's hard to get anything over on an observant teenager!
"Chance of Rain" is a surprisingly great read! It had action and just the right amount of romance that if my jr. high kids wanted to read it, I would let them. I loved that there was no profanity or explicit scenes and that it was a fast-paced book. I was able to finish this book in one sitting. I would definitely be interested in reading other novels that Laurel Veil writes. The only issue that I had with this book is that there were several spelling errors that should have easily been prevented had there been a thorough read-through before print (i.e. "Mr. cook" instead of "Mr. Cook" and "bur" in place of "but"). Also, the book contained a few grammatical errors.

This book was very well written. It had the perfect mixture of romance and mystery. I was rooting for the main character all the way throughout the book. This book seems very simple but the way the author describes the characters and the settings makes it feel like you are in there. In the last few intimate chapters where something bad happens to the main character, I felt like I was with her. This book kept me guessing and making predictions all the way through. This book is perfect if you want to read something light with a little bit of romance and mystery involved. This book was so great, I finished it in a day!
Parents splitting up is never easy no matter the child's age. one thing Ashley did not know is that her parents were not heading toward divorce only trying to keep her safe. Not knowing this she embarks on a few clandestine operations of her own to see what he father was up to and if he was with another woman besides her mom.
Ashley's dad was a cop who had made a bad enemy and since he was receiving threats he went undercover to find out who was threatening him and his family.
The story line is a good one and the teen angst is believable. Laurel Veil takes us into the mind of a teen and her keen insight is evident in her writing. This is one you will enjoy from start to finish.
I was given this book to review and I must say I am glad I did. I really enjoyed this story. It's not my usual read, not paranormal or fantasy at all. And I did figure out who Trent was for the most part not long into the book. But I still liked the story and was pleasantly surprised by the ending. Keep in mind that this is more of a young adult read, but hey, I'm young at heart! And the dynamic between Brianne and Ashley reminded me a lot of me and my best friend, so that gave me some laughs. I would seriously recommend this to anyone looking for a quick lighthearted read with a twist of mystery.
I was lucky enough to win this as a Goodreads, First Reads giveaway. Chance of Rain is an exciting story that flows so well, you don't want to put it down! Ashley and her best friend do everything together and since her dad has moved out, they decide to spy on him together too. She knows something isn't quite right but her mother is so overprotective she can't really get away with much. School starts up and there's a new kid that she starts to fall for and he seems great! Unfortunately, nothing is what it originally seems and Ashley just might find that out the hard way.
This book was great! My only complaint is that is was way to short. I wanted to spend more time with Ash, Trent, and Bri. I would definatly read another by this author.
