Raised in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon, William Kent Krueger briefly attended Stanford University—before being kicked out for radical activities. After that, he logged timber, worked construction, tried his hand at freelance journalism, and eventually ended up researching child development at the University of Minnesota. He currently makes his living as a full-time author. He’s been married for over 40 years to a marvelous woman who is an attorney. He makes his home in St. Paul, a city he dearly loves.
Krueger writes a mystery series set in the north woods of Minnesota. His protagonist is Cork O’Connor, the former sheriff of Tamarack County and a man of mixed heritage—part Irish and part Ojibwe. His work has received a number of awards, including the Minnesota Book Award, the Loft-McKnight Fiction Award, the Anthony Award, the Barry Award, the Dilys Award, and the Friends of American Writers Prize. His last five novels were all New York Times bestsellers.
"Ordinary Grace," his stand-alone novel published in 2013, received the Edgar Award, given by the Mystery Writers of America in recognition for the best novel published in that year. "Windigo Island," number fourteen in his Cork O’Connor series, was released in August 2014.
Every Cork O'Connor tale gets better and deeper into world he lives and the family he loves. The next book will take us to a new chapter of a character we've grown to love and respect. Kent you are definitely a 'go to' author for me. Look forward to the next one!
The books in this series have captivated me . The characters are rich enough to embrace. They have tingled my spine, broken my heart and filled me with joy and sorrow.
3 cracking novels in the Cork O'Connor series, probably the best so far in the series. I was going to take a break from the series (I've only just discovered Krueger's writing and started reading Book 1 a couple of weeks ago). I made the "mistake" of turning to the first page of Thunder Bay, and couldn't stop reading! That's the sign of a great, entertaining read.
Thunder Bay (4 stars): A brilliant change of style - partly written from Cork's point of view, we learn more about what made Henry Meloux the man he is.
Red Knife (4 stars): a tale of redemption lost and re-gained, of prejudice and a shocking end that was as powerful as it was unexpected.
Heaven’s Keep (4 stars): The end is clear from the first page, and the search for the missing plane went on for too long, but despite these drawbacks the story showed fine skill in plotting, characterisations and emotion. There wasn't the unexpected end that RED KNIFE had, but throughout the story Cork's humanity - his hope and his despair - were so delicately drawn that the ending can only be described as emotionally dramatic.
This author is one of my new discoveries and I can't read his books fast enough. Out of the nine or so that I've already read I've given the past seven all five stars. His stories keep me enthralled and I particularly enjoy the background of Indian culture. I can't wait for series 4 (books 10-12) to come out in July! Highly recommend!
I am a huge Cork O'Connor series fan but, for me, this one jumped the shark! The convoluted crime concocted was way over the top. I don't want to spoil anything but after I finished, I was actually angry at the crazy long, emotional ride this book took me on.
The adventures continue in this riveting series. If you enjoy mystery, adventure and desire to be friends with these flawed characters then I would highly recommend the entire series. I’m not into the mythical/magical part of the books but it is a Small portion of a great series.
