Review – Search Engine Optimization by Clover Autrey
If you’re an author who knows nothing about SEO except that it’s a subject you should know something about, then you could do worse than pick up this simple guide. It’s short, which means it really is simple (unlike, say Search Engine Optimization for Dummies … which is a mere 768 pages, suggesting it moves way past my definition of “simple”).
Search Engine Optimization is a short book that seeks to demystify SEO for authors, and I think it succeeds. It’s practical, in that the ideas are easy to understand and implement. She briefly discusses the background ideas of metadata and web crawlers before moving on to defining keywords and showing how you can find the best keywords for your book (for authors, the answer is simple: use Amazon).
She then moves on to discussing tags (both short-tailed and long-tailed … and don’t worry: that’s as technical as she gets), gives some hints on better optimising the headings and pages on your website, and explains what alt text is and how you can use it to optimize your page.
One point I found particularly helpful was that SEO is like life in that you only get one chance to make a first impression. The web crawlers go through your page within seconds of it being published, so if you publish a page or blog post that isn’t especially SEO-friendly, you’ve lost your chance. The advantage of that is there is little point in wasting time going back through old posts to make them more SEO-friendly. Just learn what you can do better, and implement those ideas in future. (Of course, it’s possibly the author is completely wrong in this: if so, please leave a comment!).
Search Engine Optimization costs less than a dollar, will take you less than an hour to read, and left me with some actionable steps I could implement without too much difficulty.
