The players have withdrawn from the game a bit, everyone more or less in one piece other than Sharlen. Some of the participants are trying to find a cure for Falan, others are responsible for her condition. Lassen is coming to appreciate that the key to winning this game is Illsaide. If Falan can’t sway the enigmatic young holy warrior in Lassen’s favor, who can?

In the meantime, Yujinn and Vord are visiting Vord’s birthplace, the Kingdom of Razenia, which is ruled by the father who gave the younger of his twin sons to La Naan as an infant. All is not well there, something the two consumate schemers become more and more aware of. Ishtar would be more than happy to jump into the trouble her two former suitors are in, but Yujinn has anticipated this. He’s decided to have Darres use his ample charms to distract her, only Darres’s idea of charm is sword play. Ishtar is smitten enough with her handsome Captain of the Guard to practice, but she can only be stopped for so long from her usual tricks. Those tricks are becoming more motivated by a desire to know just what’s happening in her kingdom and outside of it, regardless of what perils may be lying in wait. Fortunately, she’s got Duzell at her side. Ishtar may be having trouble with her magic lessons, but her vampire kitty is learning from her books…a lot.

Lassen got quite a bit of development in this, which fleshed him out a lot as an antagonist. Yujinn revealed more of the melancholy tragedy lurking behind his cheerful exterior while Vord once more showed his sharp wits. Ishtar, Duzell, and Darres continue to grow as characters, exposing more layers. Readers got a closer look at Selen, Darres’s foster mother and we meet a new character, Galahad of Razenia. Illsaide continues to brood (looking bishounen while he does so), attracting quite a lot of attention from many a bad boy while he himself watches Falan and everyone else involved in the game. Tensions brew, rising within the character driven moments, promising more conflict to come. For all of this, depicted in a sleek, androgynously exquisite style, this gets four stars.

Oh, how much I am loving this series. Darres has been able to pull off drawing Sidia, but we start the volume with him and Ishtar in recovery.
I love how some people are just like "duh, that's the vampire King Duzell", and other people are completely oblivious. Didn't they have pictures of something in their history text books.
Lailis is killed by Lassen, but then is somehow alive again..? Same goes for Sharlen, but his resurrection was much more straight forward.
Duzell and Ishtar are still very comfortable with one another, and will casually talk about the death of Phelios, but Duzell supposedly knows who Phelios is. (Which is likely not true; he didn't taste Yuujel's blood). From Ishtar's side they act the same as before, but it's obvious that Duzell is acting differently. The relationship feels more tense from his side, because he knows that Ishtar will do anything (even give up some of her typical shenanigans) to spend more time with Darres.
"The Dark Angel", AKA Captain Selen and Darres' foster mother returns. She has plans to marry Galahad from Razenia, which everyone is against due to losing their best warrior. I love how they made it seem like Selen wanted to marry Darres, and Ishtar freaked out from this misunderstanding.
The whole twin-prince thing with Vord in Razenia slightly confused me, but he had a brother who died, correct? Although I'm slow, it's likely to be explained later.
I'm glad that some people are starting to figure where they belong, like Yuujel and Illsaide, but Lassen seems to remain intimidating, from when he adopted Duzell's dark look in order to win Lailis' heart.
Act 5 picture: ... ... ... I'm sorry I'm trying not to fangirl here. I NEED a poster of this.
It's really hard not to be sympathetic towards Duzell in this volume. At some points we get to see into his mind, and it's evident his heart has been captured by Ishtar. Saying "I was actually looking forward to going to Razenia" while watching Ishtar dash off to Darres, basically crushed my heart. It's great that Darres and Ishtar could make a great match, but watching from the side lines I'm also rooting for Duzell too. A vampire king doesn't fall for just anyone.
It appears that Diaage is back in the game, once she encouraged Falan to shout out for Vord and crush Illsaide.
So excited to see what happens next! We're so close to the end and yet so far in the storyline. I feel like Judal won't be able to wrap everything up. *cries rivers*

The series as a whole was good in the beginning. Very funny and intriguing. I love romances where the characters have loved each other forever but have never told each other or something like that. lol The series declines in quality, I think towards the end. There are too many characters in too many places and things get a little confusing.

And we're back on track in this volume. We get some nice back story on the vampire Sharlen, and Lassen/Lalis. Again there's some lovely Darres/Ishtar moments - I love the scene where she apologises to Darres for falling in love with him. The artwork is particularly strong in this volume.

All the pieces are in place now and moving towards what looks to be a really exciting finish.
