The Road To Comfort

Rate this book
Juliette St. James has only done two impetuous things in her life. The first resulted in her becoming a single mother at age 18. Now, she’s embarking on a cross-country trip to celebrate becoming an empty-nester. Not sure of what she will do now that she’s flying solo, she comes face-to-face with her worst nightmare—a cowboy.

When ex-bull-rider Cyclone Kelley heads out on his horse, the last thing he expects to find is a damsel-in-distress parked alongside the road. Especially one that resembles his first crush—Brigette Bardot. He doesn’t need or want a complication in his life. His wife died while he was chasing the elusive dream of fame and fortune on the rodeo circuit. Blaming himself for her death, he quit the rodeo and returned to Nebraska. Now his mantra is “love them and leave them smiling.”

They are attracted to each other and decide a one-nighter would be a good idea. After all, what happens in Comfort, Nebraska, stays in Comfort. But when Juliette’s car gets sucked up in a tornado, she’s forced to spend a week in the town instead of just one day. While neither denies their attraction, they both realize that a week together will change the course of their lives forever. They are both forced to decide if love is worth gambling on what could be. Or if tornadoes, and cyclones, are better left alone.

From Historical to Contemporary Romances this author knows her stuff! This quick read will have you turning pages faster than a Cyclone, pun intended.

The writing is fresh, crisp, and smart. You won't find any over used cliché's or phrases. Nor will you see the same old tiresome physical and emotional behaviors from these characters. Even the first kiss, down to the first lovemaking scene is like none I've ever read.

Juliette is a very believable character, even when resisting the hot Cyclone Kelly. She wants to fall into his embrace and let him show her what love is but at each attempt to woo her, she keeps her barriers up. Being a single mother, she has always kept the men at bay and Cyclone is no different.

Then Cyclone, most people don't believe in love at first sight or that a man could become obsessed with a woman so easily. Cyclone though, he knows. He knows as soon as he lays eyes on Juliette that he wants her and you believe he will stop at nothing to get her.

In the end, you will believe in a little, quiet town called Comfort Nebraska. And you will believe an uptight, college professor from Ohio can find true love in the arms of a retired bull rider.

Since she was eighteen years old, Juliette’s life has revolved entirely around her son. She put aside a personal life in favor of an education and career, so she could provide a better life for Noah.  Now that he’s newly married and building his own life, she’s finally experiencing the kind of freedom she never really had a chance to know, the kind of freedom that allows for spontaneity and cross-country trips with no destination in mind, the kind of freedom that lands her in a nowhere town with a broken down car and a cowboy who’s interested in a lot more than just saving the day.

Judging Covers:  So this is me, looking for something new to read and finding The Road to Comfort:

*Checks the Kindle*…Nope. Nope. Nope. Wonder if BookBlogging.net has any good books up for grabs?  Ugh, no sci-fi, please.  Don’t want serious fiction.  Where the hell are the romances?   Not that one… Boring…Ugly cover…Bad Title…Typo on the cover doesn’t bode well for the book.  Not that one.  Boring. Boring. Bor– Ooooh, a Stetson!  *Requests book*

The Verdict:  Juliette’s character, the dilemma she found herself in, and her reluctance to follow her heart were easy to understand.  After all, she’d spent her entire adult life, from the moment she found out she was pregnant, planning and achieving goals.  It’s not like her life was empty, either.  She may have been an empty nester, but her son hadn’t up and moved to the other side of the world; he was going to be living nearby.  And her job as a college professor certainly wasn’t something many people would easily blow off. She had an entire life back in Ohio, a good one despite not having a partner in life, so hooking up with some random cowboy during an unintended stay in a one-light town wouldn’t have really made sense on paper.  In person, though…

Cy was a contrast in everything.  One moment he was some smooth talking player, and then in the next he was a concerned gentelman.  He was likewise reluctant to be anything more than a one-night (or perhaps one-week) stand, but then again he recognized that Juliette awakened feelings in him that hadn’t been around since the death of his wife in a farming accident.  He was both chivalrous and possessive, closed off and funny, and through it all he was pretty much the definition of a wet dream.  One of my favorite scenes in the book was when he teased Juliette about her name, given that I had just suppressed an eye-roll at it as well.

“Juliette St. James, eh? Are you by chance a stripper?”

“Why would you say something so stupid?”

“…Juliette St. James sounds like a made-up stripper name.”

I have to admit, though, that I did get a little tired of both characters’ indecisiveness.  One minute they were all hot and bothered and ready for a roll in the hay, and then they were both back to second-guessing themselves and convincing themselves that they shouldn’t.  Granted, I expect some waffling, since we can’t very well have them hopping into bed at the first inkling of attraction, but there was so much back and forth that when they finally came to their senses and started confessing real feelings, I had disconnected from both of them a bit.

In any case, it was still a fun, very quick read with some hilarious moments as well as some sweet ones.  I love that Juliette felt kind of like she needed her son’s permission to move forward with a life for herself; it really rang true, and the love story itself was just so sweet — both in that you can’t help but want someone as deserving as Juliette find excitement and happiness, as well as just in the way it all played out.  If you’re looking for something romantic that won’t require a 2-day reading commitment, this one’s a sure bet.

A deliciously exciting read by Ms. Lower! When Juliette St. James sets off on a rambling road trip after marrying off her only son to the love of his life, the last thing she expected to do was breakdown on the side of the road, in the middle of nowhere and then be rescued by a sexy cowboy on a horse, but that’s exactly what happened. As Juliette begins to get to know her rescuer, known to all as Cy, and the townspeople of Comfort, she grows more enchanted by the minute. From Cy’s raw sexual magnetism to the kind and welcoming folks of Comfort, Comfort just sorta begins to feel like home. But how can Juliette leave behind her son and her steady life as a professor just to stay in this middle-of nowhere town with the undeniably attractive Cyclone?

When Cy rescues Juliette from her broken down car as a storm approaches, he knows from the minute he sees her that he has found his future. Still mourning the death of his wife, Cy hasn’t really been looking for anything serious, but one look at Juliette and he knows he must convince her to stay in Comfort, with him. But he recognizes her reluctance and knows he must give her time and space before pressing his suit and trying to convince her that he is worth it. But does he have the patience to give her the space she needs or will he spook her and send her on her way as soon as she can have a new car delivered?

Such a fun and playful read from Ms. Lower. I loved Cy’s character and how well he understood what Juliette needed, even when she didn’t always seem to know. The guilt he feels over the death of his first wife helps us to know how deeply he is able to love and makes his character seem real and entirely lifelike. Juliette’s character is so likable and down to earth that it is quite easy to relate her to someone you know. She knows how she should behave, like a person of her status and age, but being in a new town, where no one knows her, makes her bold and brave. She begins to reinvent herself from her clothing to her personality, and haven’t we all dreamed of doing that at some point or another? The setting, the small town of Comfort, has such a rich history, I really enjoyed reading the part about the grooves in the ground from the Oregon Trail. The supporting characters, the triplets Molly, Dolly, and Lolly ,and Cy’s brother in-law O.C are excellently written and just help to make this novel such a pleasure to read! You just can’t go wrong with a Becky Lower novel, so pick yours up today and start reading!

5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

So I have decided I want my car to break down in the middle of tornado valley right when a storm is brewing, decide I might as well eat Cheetos and read my kindle while waiting it out but instead get rescued by a yummy cowboy on a horse that I know will be rocking my world in the near future. Did I get your attention?? WINK!

Oh Becky ... Becky Lower ... one of my fave authors who delivers again and again! I loved The Road to Comfort, it was an endearing and smoky read. The words flowed, the pages swiped and before I knew it, this book was done and I was believing in love at first sight! I have to say your heroine really started to tick me off there for a bit, but then again, someone is always ticking me off in your books and I keep coming back for more! Hook, line and sinker! LOL

Juliette St James is throwing caution to the wind. She has raised her son as a single parent, seen him educated and married off and now it's time for her to let her hair down. She decides to drive cross country with no destination in mind. The car is packed with junk food, her kindle, the windows are down, her arm is hanging out the window and she is taking it all in. Then the clouds darken and her car breaks down in the middle of cornfield country.

Cyclone Kelley (yup that is his name) see the smoke billowing through the corn fields and hops on is horse to rescue the unfortunate soul. Well when Juliette steps out of her car, WHAMO, he is captivated. After losing his beloved wife a few years ago, one night stands are all he has allowed, but this beauty he has decided will be a keeper. Juliette comes with a guarded heart, but Cy comes on full force and even the most leery cannot resist him. While love is for the reaching, there are a few bumps along the way. Will one college professor who is trying to LIVE for once take a chance on a true cowboy?? You'll have to read to find out. Great, shorter read one can enjoy while relaxing this summer! :)

HAPPY READING! :)

The Road to Comfort, Becky Lower’s newest contemporary is a treat. Why? Because of the characters who surprise you the more time you spend with them.

Juliette St. James is an uptight college professor who impetuously decides to climb in her car and take a cross-country road trip after her son’s wedding. Instead of having a stress-free vacation, her car breaks down on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere when a storm is coming.

Cyclone Kelley is an ex-bull rider who comes across at first as an egotistical player. He rescues Juliette on the side of the road as only a cowboy could, on the back of his horse. One look at the teacher and Cyclone is smitten. His goal: to sleep with her.

But here is when the book gets interesting.

Juliette is more than her conservative clothes and history professor persona. She is a single mom who spent her entire life taking care of her son and working hard to be successful but she has never allowed herself any happiness. Now she has a chance at love if she is willing to open her heart. Her indecision and doubt is relatable to any woman and I cheered her on as she discovered that she is more than a mom. She is a sensual woman.

Cyclone was also a surprise. Even though his cockiness put this reader off at first, it is quickly revealed that it is an act, s shield he’s built around himself since his wife died. Cyclone is actually the heart of this story which was a nice twist. He is the one who fights so hard to convince Juliette she deserves love, and that is when I fell in love with this Nebraska cowboy.

Watching these two characters find AND hold onto each other is what makes this book a great read.

Clever Becky Lower – her new contemporary romance is not about perfect young twenty-year-olds falling in love, it is a wonderful celebration of the mature, unique beauty and sensuality inherent in a woman in her 40’s. Juliette St James has spent the last twenty-three years raising her son alone. Now, uncharacteristically, she heads out West on a spontaneous adventure. When her car breaks down on a deserted road in Nebraska, she knows this was a mistake and she should have stayed at home where life was dull but predictable.

Cy Kelley (yes, short for Cyclone) is the sexy cowboy who believes he is living out a youthful fantasy when he sees the stunning brown eyed blonde, stuck on the side of the road. His libido goes into over-drive as she licks Cheet-O’s off her fingers while deciding whether it’s safer to brave an oncoming storm or climb onto the back of his horse.

This is a bright and heart-warming read as Juliette literally lets her hair down in a metamorphosis from staid college professor to playful, sensual woman. It is a mystery how long she is able to resist the horse-riding, Harley revving, very hot Cy Kelley as he tries to convince Juliette she deserves some fun, specifically with him. Becky Lower has created a wonderful, sexy romance, in a town filled with quirky secondary characters and a red hot hero.

Whether astride a horse, bouncing in a pick-up or straddling a Harley, Cyclone Kelley is hot. He oozes sexuality when the word “darlin’” rolls off his tongue, like hot chocolate sauce slowly covering a sundae. It’s a wonder Juliette St. James can resist his charms as long as she does for he surely is her road to comfort and a whole lot more.

Author Becky Lower’s newest contemporary, “Road To Comfort,” is a sweet read about an Ohio woman who gets a second chance in life and a first-time shot at true love. It means she must undo her professorial hair bun, shed her business suits and get rid of her granny panties. It’s not long into the book that the reader is urging her to do just that and jump into Cyclone’s capable arms.

How she resisted that black Stetson, Nebraska drawl and tight, white ribbed undershirt for so long is hard to fathom.

“Road To Comfort,” is a coming-of-age tale of a woman who thought she was long-past the age of passion, love and dependence on someone else to give her comfort. Happily, she wasn’t.

Oh, am I ever happy I read this book. It is sweet, funny, poignant, and very, very worth picking up – and then not putting down again until you’ve turned the last page.
On a whim, college Prof Juliette St. James takes off on a cross-country trek after her only child leaves the nest for good. When she becomes stranded, just as violent storms threatens, farmer Cy, her handsome knight in chaps and Stetson shows up, literally on horseback, and carries her off to safety. Grand as all that sounds, and as you might imagine, there are bumpy roads and battered hearts ahead.
The rest of the world faded away as I passed some lovely hours in Comfort, NB. I must say, I’ve driven through NB several times, usually spend the night in Kearney, and have found the people and landscape to be every bit as beautiful and ‘real’ as they are portrayed in this story – pity I didn’t find a cowboy like Cy while there, or I would’ve stayed, too.
It was my delight and pleasure to ride along with Cy and Juliette, and discover just how they go about falling in love and making a future together, out of two very different lives. Very well done.

Prim and beautiful Juliette St. James leaves home on an impulsive road trip, only to find herself stranded in Comfort, Nebraska, rescued by ex-rodeo cowboy Cyclone Kelley. Despite the powerful attraction that springs up between them, Juliette knows they are complete opposites and does not want to ruin the responsible life she has built for herself.

But Cy figures he might as well "go for the gold," and he pulls out all the stops to win Juliette's heart. Now, if only Juliette will stop letting the mistakes of her youth poison the present and allow herself to love, she and Cy both will win the ultimate prize. This is an uplifting read with wonderful characters and great descriptions. Enjoy!

Ms. Lower had a good writing style. This is the second book I have read from her. She consistently shows that her skills can stay consistent.

The Road to Comfort isn't my usual style of book but I liked the blurb so I thought I would give it a chance. I think that is the main reason I had some struggles with the story. It wasn't the writing quality or even the story line. So i don't want my lack of genre reading to hurt the potential readers who do like these types of stories on a regular basis.

I do like that Ms. Lower is consistent. Sometimes that is hard to find in authors and it is reassuring and pleasant to know there is a certain quality you will get when picking up a book.

All in all I'm giving this a solid 3 star.

Glad I Found BL

Enjoyed very much. Just not a 5 star. Not a fan of Insta-love. The female lead, Juliette, lacks the strength I admire in novels. I get that she is a mature woman, but has no sense of her own worth. And she devalues herself. Cy is a great alpha male and book boyfriend.

Really liked that it was an older woman and younger man. Thank you, Lower, for bringing us this tale and breaking a social barrier!
