Since she was eighteen years old, Juliette’s life has revolved entirely around her son. She put aside a personal life in favor of an education and career, so she could provide a better life for Noah. Now that he’s newly married and building his own life, she’s finally experiencing the kind of freedom she never really had a chance to know, the kind of freedom that allows for spontaneity and cross-country trips with no destination in mind, the kind of freedom that lands her in a nowhere town with a broken down car and a cowboy who’s interested in a lot more than just saving the day.
Judging Covers: So this is me, looking for something new to read and finding The Road to Comfort:
*Checks the Kindle*…Nope. Nope. Nope. Wonder if BookBlogging.net has any good books up for grabs? Ugh, no sci-fi, please. Don’t want serious fiction. Where the hell are the romances? Not that one… Boring…Ugly cover…Bad Title…Typo on the cover doesn’t bode well for the book. Not that one. Boring. Boring. Bor– Ooooh, a Stetson! *Requests book*
The Verdict: Juliette’s character, the dilemma she found herself in, and her reluctance to follow her heart were easy to understand. After all, she’d spent her entire adult life, from the moment she found out she was pregnant, planning and achieving goals. It’s not like her life was empty, either. She may have been an empty nester, but her son hadn’t up and moved to the other side of the world; he was going to be living nearby. And her job as a college professor certainly wasn’t something many people would easily blow off. She had an entire life back in Ohio, a good one despite not having a partner in life, so hooking up with some random cowboy during an unintended stay in a one-light town wouldn’t have really made sense on paper. In person, though…
Cy was a contrast in everything. One moment he was some smooth talking player, and then in the next he was a concerned gentelman. He was likewise reluctant to be anything more than a one-night (or perhaps one-week) stand, but then again he recognized that Juliette awakened feelings in him that hadn’t been around since the death of his wife in a farming accident. He was both chivalrous and possessive, closed off and funny, and through it all he was pretty much the definition of a wet dream. One of my favorite scenes in the book was when he teased Juliette about her name, given that I had just suppressed an eye-roll at it as well.
“Juliette St. James, eh? Are you by chance a stripper?”
“Why would you say something so stupid?”
“…Juliette St. James sounds like a made-up stripper name.”
I have to admit, though, that I did get a little tired of both characters’ indecisiveness. One minute they were all hot and bothered and ready for a roll in the hay, and then they were both back to second-guessing themselves and convincing themselves that they shouldn’t. Granted, I expect some waffling, since we can’t very well have them hopping into bed at the first inkling of attraction, but there was so much back and forth that when they finally came to their senses and started confessing real feelings, I had disconnected from both of them a bit.
In any case, it was still a fun, very quick read with some hilarious moments as well as some sweet ones. I love that Juliette felt kind of like she needed her son’s permission to move forward with a life for herself; it really rang true, and the love story itself was just so sweet — both in that you can’t help but want someone as deserving as Juliette find excitement and happiness, as well as just in the way it all played out. If you’re looking for something romantic that won’t require a 2-day reading commitment, this one’s a sure bet.
