David S. Garnett (born 1947) is a UK science fiction author and editor whose novels include Cosmic Carousel, Stargonauts and Bikini Planet. He edited a paperback anthology revival of Michael Moorcock's New Worlds magazine, two Zenith anthologies of original British SF stories, and three Orbit Science Fiction Yearbooks.
Published in 1989, I was worried that this would be full of dated 80s cyberpunk. While thankfully more varied than that, it does have more than its fair share of jargon-filled, "edgy" near future SF which tries to make up for lack of story with copious amounts of punkish "attitude". Rucker and Laidlaw's tale in particular is a near-incomprehensible burble of surfer slang and chaos theory. Farber's superhero multiverse tale is also silly and inconsequential. Ballard's is slight but amusing political satire. Massa and MacDonald are the most successful at crafting fully rounded and emotionally resonant tales, finding the human heartache amid black holes and artificial gods.
three or so good ones in here but also some padding. as an aside I really liked the soft binding and thin paper used for this series. Lovely to read and falls open without breaking the spine.
