A Hearts On Fire Review
ONE & A HALF STARS--Scotty Cade's "An Unconventional Courtship" has a promising blurb - an assistant in love with his boss for years. The boss, Webber, is actually in the closet and has a model best friend and beard. He's also in the closet but feels something for his personal assistant as well and both men do not know how to exclaim their secret crushes.
Well the best part of this story? It is the blurb. I was a little iffy at the 3% mark as the prologue was a predictable plot device and reflecting back... unnecessary.
I was disappointed with the story. I though there would have been more intrigue and conventionality. There was nothing unconventional at all with this story.
Fans of sugary sweet Harlequin-like romances where both partners have slow, slow love scenes, long drawn out description of mundane items like meals and wardrobe (winter dinner jackets, suspenders and cummerbunds are an example), dialogue not fitting the characters (what forty-five year old man do you know that incessantly cries, speaks and acts like a 15 year-old lovelorn teenager - oh the non-angst of it all).
I don't and just can't.
I enjoy fidelity and promising relationship starts like any romance fan but this story was too much. It was too similar to cheesy outdated soap operas for me to enjoy and it was a chore for me to finish this story.
The use of the secondary characters was weak Deanna the supermodel beard who is pregnant...what purpose was that or Deanna even necessary for the story? Nathan the supposed 'villain', his antics were too predictable and just yawn worthy.
The story peaked at 29% and drew out the inevitable. The main characters kept re-describing boring things like sunsets. Deanna exclaims how beautiful they are, Tristan does too. So does Webber. Then Tristan again. *slaps forehead into wall* then there's the re-re-reassurance Webber and Tristan re-re-repeat again and again and on and on about their love.
What could have salvaged this story? Webber acting closer to his age, at least dialogue-wise. He was not even professional among a fellow colleague.
On the other side of the coin, there is a base for this type of book (sugary sweet, fluffy, low angst, high dramatics type of reads).
Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) I am not one of them.

Please, tell me what was unconventional? Oh, let me count the cliches. WARNING: Some of this may be interpreted as spoilers.
1 - Rich boss and employee pining away for each other for years
2 - Rich boss asks employee on three week "work" retreat to an island he owns
3 - Beard comes along and of course causes confusion
4 - Confusion clears followed by "I love you. I always have. Always will." scene
5 - Courting with scenic trips, tuxedo dinner, fireworks display (literally)
6 - Dancing to Etta's James "At Last" Thanks, I'm now ashamed of my wedding song.
7 - Two absolutely gorgeous gay men who have only had approximately two partners because they've been saving themselves
8 - They've been tested for everything so skipping the condoms makes sense
9 - Moving into together after changing the dynamics of the relationship after 48 hours.
I'd list more, but I had to abandon the book 75% in. There was absolutely no conflict and/or tension making this an incredibly sappy story. If you're looking for real, then look elsewhere.

Tristan works for Webber and has for the last two years. He has a secret though, he loves his boss but because of a past lover is content to admire from afar without getting involved in any kind of romance.
Out of the blue Webber invites Tristan on a working holiday. They have a few weeks to sort out their feelings for each other and redefine their relationship.
This is a hard one to classify. It's probably the most romantic M/M that I've ever read. That has good points to it and bad ones, tbh. Good in that it was a sweet read with likeable characters and a pretty angst light storyline, bad in that the characters and storyline felt a bit artifical to me. Can a story be too romantic? I sound like such a scrooge but while this was a cute, gentle read it just wasn't really to my taste.
If you're in the mood for a super sweetly romantic M/M then this would be an excellent choice.

Though it has a promising premise - office assistant in love with his boss for years - the execution was lacking.
This is what happens when good narration happens to a bad story. It didn't matter that Finn Sterling delivers a good performance. The story grated from early on, ruining any opportunity for me to really enjoy it. Full disclosure on why it didn't work for me: It's overly descriptive for everything, it's a giant miscommunication plot early on, which takes more than half the book to correct, and the "twist" at the end was far too predictable.

I actually marked this DNF at 52%. However, after taking the night (and having errands to run around town) I decided to go ahead, try it again, and, if not enjoy it, then at least tough it out and finish the audio book. *sighs* I spent most of it with bitch face.
There is a whole plot with one of the most see through "villains" I've ever encountered, which was just...painfully obvious, and to top it all off it ends completely unresolved!
Bottom line: If you prefer saccharine sweet fluff-filled confectionary Harlequin-like romance novels with an over-abundance of description for day-to-day items, a huge miscommunication plot, slow burn build up to not-too-terribly-descriptive love scenes, behavior which does not fit the age or gender of the characters (there's a lot of unnecessary weeping, wailing and metaphorical teenager-like wringing of hands), a cellophane villain, and an unresolved ending...then you'll love this story. And bonus! The narration is lovely.
When Tristan was finally able to form coherent words, he looked at his lover with amazement. “My God, Web, that was the most intense thing I’ve ever done in my life. I didn’t think I was going to survive the pleasure. You were amazing.”
Webber rested his forehead against Tristan’s. “Baby, I love you so much. I never knew it could be like this.”
Tristan knew it was the adrenaline release, but suddenly he was on the verge of tears. His bottom lip quivered and he wanted desperately to tell Webber he loved him, but his voice cracked and left him before he could get the words out. Tears spilled down his cheeks as he caressed Webber’s face. At this point, the best he could hope for was that Webber saw in Tristan’s eyes what was overflowing from his heart.
If that's not your cup of tea, I wouldn't recommend it.

While this story and characters were not bad, this just was not the story for me. Like a lot of books I have read lately, the premise and the beginning of the story had potential and promise and then just seems to go downhill after a while. While I found the character of Tristen written somewhat well and could understand the way he was and acted (the author gave a little background on him), the same cannot be said for Webber. With no past given with Webber his character was just unrealistic and flat. While I would love three weeks on a private island being pampered and waited on hand and foot, this just came across as way to sugary sweet for my tastes, however, others might find it fine.

Is this Pierce Brosnan on the cover or am I just seeing things?
One star up because of the Pierce Brosnan look-alike. I read up to 48% and skimmed the rest. I can't say I enjoyed it. So very lame and melodramatic, it's a shame considering it had so much potential.

This book is a mix between sweet romance, some extremely angsty moments, and a workplace mystery in the financial sector that adds a level of reality and suspense that I found quite interesting. And while "unconventional" definitely applies to the way Tristan handles the relationship with his boss, if not the plotline itself, the additional elements give this well-known storyline a present-day, fresh look and feel that made it an entertaining read for me.
Tristan loves his job, and he has fallen for his boss. He fights the latter with everything he has for several reasons. "I want to keep my job" is the more obvious one, but his personal past and bad experience is probably the more important barrier. He works hard and has learned a lot from his boss on the professional front, so when the tip to the Caribbean takes away the normal workplace boundaries he has gotten used to, Tristan needs to re-evaluate his position.
Webber is a model boss, but he, too, is attracted to Tristan. He has kept his feelings under control, and the additional problem of being in the closet doesn’t exactly make things easier. Especially since his very attractive 'beard' is also his best friend, so the vibes they send to Tristan are not exactly encouraging. Webber needs to make up his mind and get off the fence, and despite all appearances (he has more money than he'll ever need), this is not and easy thing for him to do.
If you like workplace mysteries and enjoy a boss and employee struggling with what is right and wrong for their personal relationship, if a mysteriously fraudulent corporate takeover is likely to add spice and enjoyment to your read, and if you're in the mood for a sweet romance with some suspenseful undertones, you will probably like this novel.

It took me only a few pages to realize I was reading an updated Mills & Boon romance from the '60s even though I'd never read one - I just read the blurbs since secretaries-falling-for-the-boss or nurse-falling-for-the-doctor romances never interested me.
There was nothing original in this book - and I wasn't expecting any - so I thought surely there would something either in the characters or in the telling of this hackneyed tale to justify writing it. There was some - until they reached the magical island of Dr Moreau. No, sorry, Moreau's the MC's surname. Tristan Moreau. I didn't mind him even though he made the same mistake twice - falling in love with the boss/superior. The story really went downhill fast for me the moment they left for the island. The description of whatshisname's private jet, his island home, his native dependents - it came across as if the author herself was gawking at the wealth and that never transfers across well to the story.
I lasted up to 60% before the predictability (which I rarely mind, actually) became a yawn. I have read sugary romances and loved them but this one got boring and I was skipping too many paragraphs. I thought of continuing just to see whether something's up with Nathan, the CFO who dislikes Tris, but after skimming the rest of the magic-island pages, I've decided I don't care.

November 29, 2012A very nice and also sweet romance, a mix of office affairs them with May/December (almost) and with a touch of Cinderfella and Silver romance… basically the author made a concoction of all my preferred “flavours”.
One thing that I noticed immediately is that Scotty Cade made sympathetic to the reader even the “villain”: Tristan is a young college student who falls in love with one of his professor, a bisexual handsome man. When I said that Justin is sympathetic I mean that he is not the cold man-heater most commonly you have as villain in a romance; Justin is simply who he is telling, a bisexual man who likes men AND women (well, he is bisexual!), the only problem is that he likes them at the same time, and Tristan doesn’t know that. In a way I don’t think his story with Justin ends badly since Tristan is a man and Justin wants to marry a woman, I simply think Justin’s fiancé is more suitable to him than young and innocent Tristan. Justin was really convinced he was having a flirt with Tristan, nothing complicated, but Tristan fell in love.
In any case that is the past, and now Tristan is Webber’s PA, and since Tristan is the same man as before, he is in love with Webber as well, and of course Webber is engaged with a wonderful and beautiful woman. Tristan is willing to not let his feelings in the middle of their work relationship, problem is that Webber is not of the same idea. His fiancé is a beard, he is in love with Tristan and he wants to come out for him. So, office affairs, sweet and tender, with just that hint of complications that makes it realistic, but nothing that is really opposing to their love. May/December since Tristan is 26 years old and Webber 45, and that makes him also “Silver” (and indeed he has silver streaks on his hair, even more handsome I should say (ps have I tell you I have a crush on Pierce Brosnan? did you see that cover?)); the age difference doesn’t really interfere in their relationship, and actually, it’s Tristan who seems to have the upper hand during intimacy, Webber is probably a very clever businessman, but I have the feeling that he prefers to not being the boss in his private life. And in the end Cinderfella, since Webber is a multimillionaire who sweeps away Tristan and brings him on a private Caribbean island and woos him with sunsets and champagne…
If I have to find a fault, is that, the only obstacle to their love, that related to the office romance, is wrapped up really quickly, almost like it was non-existent… but maybe that was not really important to the romance.

One word can describe this book. ROMANTIC! It was such a sweet and romantic book.
I loved An Unconventional Courtship. It was such a good solid romance. I would have read more and more of it. Tristan and Webber were such a beautiful couple (that is the only way I can describe them). I fell in love with them so quickly. It had all the sappy hard core romance I love without making me sick.
As characters I could see why they fell in love. They were in each others pockets for two years. Became fast friends and just had those small things in common that bond people together and make them connect. The first kiss was sweet and I cursed when they had the little misunderstanding.
This book would not be for everyone. It would make some people sick, I know, but for me this fulfilled the ultimate sappiness for me. The characters were adorable, I loved almost all the secondary characters. The plot was interesting and I just wanted more and more of them together.
If I could say one thing for this book it would be that is shows how strong relationships can be built. Although, not everyone is rich like Webber, small things can show how much you care and both MC's really did care in this book. It was a change to see both as in love as they were.
Highly recommend this book to all you fans of major sap. I do not regret reading it.

I don't give a book 5* that often. I think I was just in the right mood. I totally enjoyed every minute reading it!
This is a super sweet romantic love story with butterflies flying around, rainbow, firework, blue sky, aqua sea, star quality food and vintage wine, more important: hot sex scenes! And the MCs said I Love you over hundred times throughout the whole story. :-)
Don't ask me about the writing style, don't ask about the plot, don't care about these. It's just a feel good comfort story. LOL

Wow. It's over, finally. The story itself had promise but I got so lost in the descriptions of absolutely every little thing that I must have missed it. Quite sappy and lovey dovey with zero feeling evoked in me. I really didn't care one way or the other about these two.

The good, the bad...and the adorable.
It's a story that's been told many times over again: employee-slash-personal-assistant falls for uber rich boss. Tristan Moreau has been deeply betrayed by a past lover who chose to be with a woman instead of a him. Now, seven years later, Tristan finds himself secretly in love with his boss, Webber Kincaid, and has been hiding it for the last two years. The Good: There was soooooo much sexual tension!! Seriously, all of the accidental touches and heated looks had me giddy. The guys didn't even kiss until 37%!!! Plus, there was only like 5 minutes of angst that gets cleared up quite quickly. Honestly, I expected it to drag on for ages, but nope, it all gets fixed and sweetness ensues.
The Bad: Speaking of the the sweetness, at times it was a bit much. Once these guys realize they are both in love with each other, its kinda insta-I-plan-to-spend-the-rest-of my-life-with-you-love. So it made me roll my eyes a few times, but Tristan and Webber were so cute I just accepted it and kept on reading. It did get a bit wordy at times, but I like this kind of wordiness, so it didn't really bother me.
The Adorable: I adored Tristan and Webber! How could anyone not love them. They are both sweet and kind and Webber has to be one of the most romantic heroes I've ever read. He knows how to steal agirl's man's heart! And all the romantic plans he made while courting Tristan...*sigh*...so romantic.
Moving on to the sequel: An Unconventional Union. I'm hoping for a beautifully, romantic wedding!

Sweet, romantic, trite, boring.
Insanely long info dumps in beginning and way too much unimportant filler the rest of the time.
The men cried way too much and too often.
Business Administration does not mean Administrative Assistant. Someone graduating at the top of his class with an M.B.A. does not become an executive assistant and have to be taught things like how to read a file on a merger and understand it. He does not fetch coffee and make airline reservations.
Everyone is way too perfect and understanding, except the villain who is way too evil and stupid.
It's basically one big love fest:
and on and on.
The guys on the cover, though, fit the characters and are hot.
But yes, it was very sweet.

This book was exactly what I needed when I read it. It is really very sweet and at times too much so. But in all honesty, sometimes this is exactly what one needs!

This story was so sweet that I gained three pounds just from reading it. It was also so romantic that I thought I was watching a soap opera. It was a nice story, but long, and unrealistic.
And there were some inconsistencies and irritating words that I just wanted to edit out of there. One word that really bugged me was lubricant. The author used it every time, never used lube at all. I've never read an m/m romance where the word lube wasn't used at least once. What really bothered me even more about that is the fact that the author used apps for appetizers every time, so why, if you're going to abbreviate words, would you not abbreviate lubricant? It's such a small and insignificant thing to some people, but it became huge to me as the story went on and the guys were still using lubricant. Really?

A trope that has been done many times:employee in love with boss who he thinks is straight and boss secretley in love with employee but because of reputation and company can't let himself get involved until a ' situation ' puts them in close proximity and love triumphs!The above synopsis covers this story to a tee with not a lot more happening and that for me was its problem. There is a small degree of conflict but it all happens in the last 5% or so of the book and like the rest of the story is wrapped up too quickly and perfectly.The two MC's, Tristan and Webber - employee and boss - do have chemistry and IMO the best part of the story is the beginning when they don't realise each others feelings, (although they do spend a lot of time praising each other and being so in love for two years, I'm pretty certain the attraction would have been apparent to a point), up to when they finally admit how much in love with each other they are on the island after a little bit of misunderstanding concerning Webbers best female friend and 'beard' , but from then on it became a bit too perfect, sweet, and dare I say it - a bit twee! Overall a pleasant enough story but not one I want to read again. I'll get my next dose of sugar from a bar of chocolate!

I enjoyed this story but at the same time slightly annoyed with how wordy it was. I think it is just the authors writing style but each sentence was overly descriptive in places.
This book is for when you are in the mood for a super dooper romance...this book even has fireworks, I kid you not, I choked on my tea when I read that.
So even though the writing is a bit twee at times the overall plot if very romantic and lovely. My advice to the author is a trick I learnt at University. When you finished your book reread it sentence by sentence and ask yourself is there anyway I can write the same thing more concisely. Some of the descriptiveness was telling me not showing me eg It was so hot the shirt stuck to my back as I stood in the sun OR I could feel sweat running down my spine and I just knew my shirt had to be transparent. (etc - thats just a random example not one in the book).
I love watching authors evolve and I think the more books scotty writes the better he will get :)

This slipped over the line from romantic to soppy at times with the constant I love you's. It also felt a lot like an article in a travel mag throughout the middle where nothing really happened except a lot of eating and off screen shagging. The story was pretty bland until 80%+ of the way through but that interesting plot line was resolved without much exploration disappointingly then the story ended and left me wondering if that was it.
The MCs are sweet and the whole thing is very tooth-decaying. Not a horrible way to spend a sleepy Saturday afternoon but it's not a story that will stay with me after I press the Home button on my Kindle.

A silly romance with an unconvincing CEO and his lukewarm assistant.
I am so disappointed by this story. I LOVE the boss and secretary romance theme and the blurb was so promising.
Sadly, the story just didn't work for me. Webber just doesn't strike me as a CEO and I don't see the kind of inner core strength needed to be the kind of man he's described to me. His actions just don't match the personality described for the CEO he is supposed to be.
Tristan was forgettable and wishy-washy.
The dialogue was awkward and the way the characters interacted with each other made no sense.
I really wanted to like this book but this just doesn't work for me.

An Unconventional Courtship is filled with romance and you won’t be disappointed. It explores the fantasy of becoming involved with someone who seems untouchable almost taboo “Your Boss”! The sexual tension between the lead characters Webber and Tristan pulls you in and makes you yearn for them to discover they have a mutual attraction and feelings. Your heart aches as they share their fears and insecurities while nurturing their love. You want them to drop their defenses and create the union they both deserve. As they reach towards each other, and open their hearts and soul for what is meant to be, their romance blooms to full strength of unity. I found myself smiling and making audible ahhhh's at times for the romantic efforts of Webber. One of my favorites was the perfect night Webber had arranged of formal attire, candles, tropical setting, and a slow dance while holding each other close to the appropriate sounds of At Last by Etta James. (Apropos, because it took both characters so long to find their true soul mate, and because Webber knew it was one of Tristan’s favorite recording artist and song. Now, I tell you what, it does not get more romantic then that). The only thing I wanted was more of Webber and Tristan’s story. I want to know what happens to Deanna and her baby, I want to know more about what justice that was served to Nathan (the creep), and I also want to know what happened to Webber with him facing charges of using company funds for personal reasons. I hope there is a sequel coming soon.

It's the first book by Mr. Cade that I've read in a while but it was just as fun and entertaining as the last. The premise of a boss and personal assistant getting involved isn't new but the slant given to the characters here is different enough that it feels fresh and new. These two men are interesting. Their personalities are well rounded and they come from vastly different backgrounds but at heart they're much alike. It's what makes their relationship work on so many levels and the author has nailed the inner working of what makes them tick perfectly.
Since their relationship is already established there isn't a great deal of angst in the story. They just have to figure out how they feel and move forward. The change in their relationship is approached at a believable pace and gives the story a realistic feel. Tristan and Webber work and play well together and it's fun seeing their change from professional to personal. There's even an important workplace mystery to solve.
So, as you can see there's a little bit of everything. Love, desire, betrayal and corporate fraud. But mostly it's a fresh, fun and sweet romance I really enjoyed. I hope you do too.
