Admittedly I wasn’t sure what to expect when I picked up this book. My knowledge of the IRS and governmental tax law is rudimentary at best so I was a little wary this novel might be over my head. It was far from it. Parris has created an easy to read adventure about a branch of our government that most are unfamiliar with, revealing it to be much more fascinating than I initially thought. This might be due in part to the colorful characters he has filling the pages, from the mysterious Hector to the loveable yet slightly infuriating Linda.

This novel is exciting from the get go, and following Danny, “Creds” Shapiro on his climb through the IRS to reach his goal of becoming a Revenue Agent is easy due to the pacing of the novel and the narrator’s voice. He’s likeable, quick witted, and is genuine, and watching him interact with the eccentric people he works with is entertaining. This gives me some difficulty understanding his infatuation with his on and off again girlfriend, Linda. While in some aspects she is a likeable character, she’s not given enough page time to get me invested in who she actually is, and every once in a while she acted so impulsively she crossed the borders of social norms, but not in a good way. She acts as the catalyst for Danny’s drive to become a Revenue Agent so I would have liked to understand her and their relationship a bit more to accept her as a source of his motivation.

There’s plenty to follow in this novel, keeping us entertained throughout, although I think the best stuff starts to come in too late nearing the end. The ending seems to cut off the previous good pacing and while it’s packed with action and great jargon, I would have liked to see it extended further, or maybe having started earlier with glimpses of it in the middle. The abrupt ending aside, the flow of the novel made it an easy and comfortable read.

Danny matches his intense drive to succeed with an easygoing way of approaching his goals making him an interesting character you’re rooting for the entire novel, even if you could never see yourself wanting to be in his shoes yourself. Watching him evolve as a character and adapt to his environment is a treat and makes the novel worth the read.
