“Welcome to immortality in utopia!”

From the moment Damien signed up for a perfect life with ReGen Inc., he didn’t ask any questions. He didn’t want or need to know. But after he’s rebooted this time, there are gaps in his memory he can’t ignore, and people he no longer recognizes are accusing him of betrayal. When someone dies, he’s determined to go looking for answers…but sometimes it really is better to forget.

Previously an Analytical Chemist & stay-at-home mum, Pippa Jay is now a Science Technician who writes scifi and supernatural stories to engage the emotions. Somewhere along the way a touch of romance crept into her work and refused to leave. In between torturing her plethora of characters, she spends the odd free moment looking after her chickens, creating cosplay for humans and dolls alike, and studying the Dark Side of the Force. Although happily settled in the historical town of Colchester in the UK with her husband of 30 years and three not-so-little monsters, she continues to roam the rest of the Universe in her head.

Pippa Jay occasionally blogs at Adventures in Scifi, and Romancing the Genres. Her works include YA and adult stories crossing a multitude of subgenres from scifi to the paranormal, often with romance, and she’s one of eight authors included in a science fiction romance anthology—Tales from the SFR Brigade. She’s also a quadruple SFR Galaxy Award winner, been a finalist in the Heart of Denver RWA Aspen Gold Contest (3rd place), the 2015 EPIC eBook awards, the 2015 RWA LERA Rebecca (2nd place), and the GCC RWA Silken Sands Star Awards (2nd place).

You can stalk her at her website, or at her blog, but without doubt her favorite place to hang around and chat is on Twitter as @pippajaygreen.

I received an ARC of Reboot from the author. This book is due out on the 31st March 2014 in e-book format.

In Reboot we meet Damien, a man who has been cloned thirteen times. We don’t learn much about his past, what kind of man he is, or how it came to be that he is one of the few who live in the utopia created by ReGen Inc. – apart from the fact that he paid a lot of money for the privilege. Our acquaintance begins as he comes ‘alive’ in his thirteenth ‘incarnation’. That something is wrong is clear from the beginning, and that sense does not let up through the story, even as some questions are answered.

At first I felt this story would get four stars, but on considering what I would say about it in this review, I realised that it is really five-star-worthy. You see, the beauty of it is not so much what is said, but what is left unsaid. One is left pondering questions about ethics, morality, existentialism and, well, the future of humankind. One is also left asking, perhaps, the biggest question of all: “What would I do?” That is probably the most disturbing of all.

Reboot is written in Pippa Jay’s accessible, clear style. It is a quick read, but might leave you in deep thought for a good while after the last word has been taken in.

REBOOT is suitable for YA and Adult readers.

Holy flippin’ twist, Batman! Though short, this story won’t leave you feeling unsatisfied. It’s an excellent science fiction story written in a strong character voice, with enough mystery to keep you reading and a twist that makes you go Oh! The world building is what I have come to expect from Pippa Jay’s work – decadently rich for the senses without being overwhelming or bogging down the actual story and pace. I absolutely recommend this read for all science fiction fans – you won’t be disappointed!

What an engaging short-story! I don't want to spoil it, but this is a true dystopia, and made me question my notions of utopia, memory and identity. What do we really want out of immortality? What moral duty do we owe our clones? Pippa Jay has written a concise examination of these weighty issues without being at all heavy-handed.

I absolutely loved this short and will be taking a look at everything else Pippa Jay has written.

Well written short story. Straight sci fi. Not a romance.

Interesting

I don’t like to give spoilers on the books that I read. I believe the blurb on the back is enough for you to decide if you will read the book or not. If you choose to read, enjoy!
