How to Summon a Memory

Rate this book
Ethan

Who is the beautiful demonic stranger in my dreams? That’s what I want to know. But between my research at Hex Academy and preparing for my unfortunate nuptials to a fellow witch, I don’t have time to explore why the demon seems so familiar. I just know the demon is important, but why?

Warwick

I’ve been searching for my best friend, Ethan, for six years. One minute he stood in front of me, finally ready to make his crossroads deal to free him of his arranged marriage, the next he’s gone and he took my heart with him. I’ll do anything to find him, if only to tell him off for leaving me right when we could finally be together. Color me surprised when one night Ethan walks through the door of the bar I’m moping in. But he’s not the same sweet, goofy boy I fell in love with. No, this is a man who has forgotten me and his true self. Will my crossroads magic be enough to bring back his memories? It better, I won’t be forgotten.

How To Summon A Memory is a fluffy and spicy paranormal romance featuring a witch missing his memories and a possessive crossroads demon determined to get back to the man he loves.

Cauldrons and Kisses is a multi-author series of MM magical standalone stories. Each low angst read will feature a witch finding love.

Hey peeps! I’m Morgan.

I’ve always been a reader and a daydreamer. My writer origin story is embarrassing now that I think about it. But also kinda funny, maybe. One day I might share. If people ask nicely. It involves a psychic.

I share an apartment with my sister in Southern Indiana where we keep the AC on year round and try to keep each other entertained.

3.5 ⭐️

On his eighteenth birthday, Ethan planned to make a deal with Wick, a crossroads demon he had befriended as a child. Only when it comes time to do it, his grandmother intervenes, steals his memories, and essentially holds him hostage.

Meanwhile poor Wick, who I was curious about since meeting him in Van and Gabe’s story, has been unwilling to move on, drinking himself stupid and pining after Ethan for the last six years.

When the pair eventually reconnect, Ethan realizes how much his grandmother has intervened in his life, and he and Wick begin doing everything they can to get back to one another permanently.

Wick and Ethan’s story was a bit more angsty than the previous stories involving the supes of Hex, Indiana, but still ended very sweetly. I do feel like the ending was a bit rushed, and they Ethan’s grandma got off too easily after everything she’d done, but overall really enjoyed their story.

A MM Second Chance romance in a paranormal small town with Demon x Witch & a strong "it's only ever been you" vibes! It's cute, fast-paced with plot driven angst.
I read my #ARC in 3hrs. I'm glad Wick got his Ethan back!

Warwick is a crossroads demon who has been waiting for his love to come back for 6 long years. W's been grumpy with a drinking problem but he's loyal & caring.
Ethan is a genius, strong witch. His memory has gaps & his dreams are filled with a handsome demon's smiles. E's dramatic, problem solver & resilient. E's bestie Florence is amazing!

After Pike, then Van's book... I'd been ready for this! With an arranged marriage & a memory spell to break, this book was filled in it's short span! It's fluffy, but also more on emotional side with longing & pining 🥺. It's quite a bummer that W+E didn't get to meet for like half the book due to the situation but their reunion's (& first times!) so lovely & dramatic! That climax was chaotic af, like whoa! So fun! I loved all the flashbacks in the book as those really are a look into how they came to love eachother.

The familiars are amazing! The Non-Binary & Demi rep was great 🥰 (Also I felt it was perfect as they're all so young when all the stuff happens in past!). This lil world Morgan has made is so interesting, I hope Poe & Wren get their books! There were quite a few typos which I hoped were corrected in final book.

good plot but doesn’t reach it’s full potential

Rating: 3🌈

I had started into this universe and the various characters stories with Lysand’s first book, Kisses at the Crossroads (Fortune Favors the Fae series). That was Lark, an imprisoned fae and a crossroads demon’s love story. It introduced the town of Hex, Indiana and Lysand’s intention of expanding into various other relationships of the side characters in future series and stories.

This approach, as I noted earlier, left the original plot a bit unsatisfying as it appeared that Lysand was concentrating on setting up the foundation for other plots to come.

They ended up across several different multi-author, various themed series. I have listed them below as has the author under the title Hex, Indiana. Does this make for a comprehensive or complete sense of the universe or greater understanding of the characters represented? Not really. But I’ll let you be the judge.

The concept behind this story is a good one. The idea of two best friends/potential lovers, in this case a summoned crossroads demon and a young witch separated from each other . By loss of memory, an inability to find their person, a mystery , combined with an unknown determined enemy, is a terrific one. It catches your attention and engages your imagination. Especially the characters here, one Prof. Ethan Speller who’s engaged to his best friend, the nonbinary Florence, an engagement and marriage neither wants but can seem to stop because of their powerful families. Add to that an unhappy crossroads demon, Warwick, who doesn’t know what happened to the young witch who was his best friend? Amazing plot.

However, How To Summon A Memory just doesn’t have enough depth or page length to really capture the potential of the story the author has set out to create. There’s so much that gets lost here.

Florence, the best friend? Terrific character. Their familiars , chubby squirrel (Florence) and hummingbird (Ethan) are important but not well introduced. Other parts of this story, like the school, or subplots like the ones involving the students and chemistry classes, aren’t either necessary but overly dramatic or needed and not well executed. Much of the story goes along these lines.

The narrative doesn’t flow smoothly or in an evenly balanced/paced way that makes the book feel cohesive. Which is a shame because a really good idea and couple gets lost along the way.

The person responsible for all the woe gets off with a “do better “, the explanation for the magic doesn’t really work, and I’m left wondering why it wasn’t combined into one series to begin with.

This was interesting . If you are a fan of the series and author, that’s who I’m going to recommend it as a read.

Warwick & Ethan
The struggle these two have to suffer through is so heartbreaking. Neither of them deserve any of the heartache they've endured.

It was so hard in the previous two books connected to this one (Kisses at the Crossroads & The Nephilim's Touch) to watch Warwick and endure all the suffering he goes through. He might have been a side character in those stories, but he always made an impression. He believed so hard for so long that Ethan was still alive and well, and somehow just out of his reach. The shock that hits both men when they finally meet again--even if Ethan doesn't really understand or know who Wick is again yet--is sweet and breathtaking. It lasts for only a moment, but experiencing that piece of their mystery is so wonderful.

The drama that comes racing at them as soon as they meet again made the latter half of the story very intense and stressful. It was still an adventure and we got to see Wick & Ethan fight to remain together against the odds. It's definitely another story with fantastic side-character besties that assist our wonderful MCs.

Though all presented in other multi-author series', the three books containing this set of complex main characters is awesomely entertaining and inspiring. Each set of MCs brings their own difficulties and stressors to the table, but their better halves work so hard to help them overcome and endure. I know this is a unique set of stories I can revisit again and again.

Audiobook Update:
Narrated by Zachary Zaba
I always smile when I get to listen to another story narrated by Zachary. He brings such fun to the characters he reads, and makes the stories that much more enjoyable to experience. It's especially fun when I can recognize the voices he uses similarly for MCs within the story's/series universe that I have already listened to. I know I'll have to give How to Summon a Memory another go when I can enjoy all three stories again back to back.

I received an authorized copy of this story/audiobook and am volunteering my honest review.

Ethan is a witch trying to get out of an arranged marriage. He hunts down Wick and for reasons is refused service. So for every day for two years he comes back to see Wick and just visits. Then for another four years they visit and become closer. Several someone's doesn't want Ethan and his BFF Flo to bond but his grandmother is determined to make it happen. Ethan, Wick and Flo are all trying to figure out a way to break the arranged marriage. We get to see the characters Lark and Pike from Kisses at the Crossroads and Gabe and Van from The Nephilim's Touch. These three books are all in separate series yet are attached also with the Hex, Indiana connection. I really liked the story and it's well written. I liked the parts where Ethan has lost his memory and how they figure out why and then he gets it back. I love the character and world building. The characters have good chemistry together. I like the way the author wrote the aroace, bisexual and demisexual characters in a way that kept them true to themselves. I didn't like Ethan's grandmother for most of the book but I can see how she came to make her bad decisions and was glad that she is on the road to redemption at the end of the book. I liked that the main characters have familiars and how they play a role in the story and aren't just there as filler. I definitely recommend this book, the two books mentioned above and this author.

Oh my goodness!! I have been waiting for Wicky and Ethan's story to comes out, since they made their first appearance in Kisses at the Crossroads.

Wick or Wicky is a crossroads demon and has been one for a very long time due to his brother Van's misbehavior. It is because of his crossroads that he meets Ethan. Ethan is a witch, a very powerful witch with a very controlling grandmother. He initially heads to the crossroads to have the demon take away his magic so that he is no longer required to marry. Unfortunately, Wick has rules to abide by and he can't help Ethan. Ethan thinks if he visits everyday that he will wear Wick down and he'll get his way long before his 18th birthday. What he gets is so much better...

Morgan Lysand writes low angst happily ever afters that I absolutely adore. Wicky and Ethan's story though had to be different. They had been pulled apart from their love by Ethan's grandmother and circumstances for years. In the first two books, we saw Wick as a despondent demon that liked to fight. We read as others told him to move on and yet he held firm in his belief that he would find Ethan again. That kind of love oh that is so amazing to read. I inhaled this book, reading and reading at every opportunity to get to that happy ending. I couldn't have asked for more except of course I do want more. I want more books like this one, happy reads that get me through the hard days.

Witch Ethan wonders who is the beautiful demonic stranger in his dreams? But between teaching at Hex University and preparing for his unfortunate nuptials to a fellow witch, he doesn’t have time to explore why the demon seems so familiar. Warwick has been searching for his best friend, Ethan, for six years. Colour him surprised when one night Ethan walks through the door of the bar he's moping in. But he’s not the same sweet, goofy boy Warwick fell in love with. No, this is a man who has forgotten him and his true self. Will his crossroads magic be enough to bring back his memories?

I loved this story with the meddling family members and the two men who loved each other but forces were against them. I thought it was particularly cruel to make Ethan forget Warwick. There were a lot of feelings and emotions that were easy to feel and understand. This was an MM story with mature content.

I so wanted to love this. I read about Ethan and Wick Kisses at the Crossroads and was so excited to get the rest of their story. I especially love childhood sweethearts and demisexual characters! So I was pretty disappointed when we got very little background on the two before they were separated, despite them having been together for 6 years at that point. We got very little build up with the reunion, and then there was no development between them, no relearning who the other was. Especially considering Ethan’s memory issues, that was frustrating. It was instalove, and it really wasn’t the best place for it. On top of that, they took a demisexual character who isn’t sure he even wants to kiss someone, and puts him into multiple sex scenes straight away after reuniting. No build up, no testing the waters, not even much in the way of conversations about if he is uncomfortable. It’s like they threw in Wick being demisexual solely to explain him not sleeping with anybody else before finding Ethan again. I so wanted to love this, but it was just disappointing.

This is suuuuuuch a soft read. Ethan and Wick are the softest of protags, fighting for their love against a memory spell that keeps them apart. Ethan and Wick have history; Ethan as a tragic witch haunted by his grandmother’s mistakes and determined to get a crossroads demon to circumvent her wishes for him to end up in an an arranged marriage that he does not want and Wick, the demon who falls in love with him.

Ethan’s grandmother bewitches Ethan and wipes his memory of Wick, and their love, and his plan for salvation but somewhere in his memory images of the beautiful demon are persistent and tell him that he must fight to find him once more.

It’s the sweetest little love story you could read with loads of romantic affirmations and intimacy that makes this slow burn even more special

“Ethan is the sweetest, goofiest guy in the world. And he’s mine.”

Back in hex, with Ethan and Wick.

After reading about Wick and his pinning for Ethan in The Nephilims Touch, I wondered where they would go and I loved where they went.

I love how Ethan, although he couldn’t remember Wick, trusted him completely and the moment they met he was convinced that Wick was his future.

Wick was a sweetie pie, it was nice to see him going from the grumpy grump he was, so slightly warmer and warmer the more and more Ethan was around. And the way his hope and willpower to carry on just continued to grow.

I loved seeing past characters in Hex and I loved the town itself too.

🌟🌟🌟🌟.5

I received this as an ARC for my honest opinion. How to Summon a Memory by Morgan Lysand is such a wonderful read. It adds to the Hex, Indiana saga for the boys. Ethan and Wick’s story is one I have been waiting for. Torn apart by families wanting power, Ethan doesn’t remember Wick. Wick must live looking for Ethan, it took him 6 years. Love cannot be stopped. Ethan is set to marry his best friend, Florence. Florence does not and neither does Ethan. This story is one of love conquering all and even the best intentions are not the best solutions. These boys have my heart! I can’t wait for more from Hex, Indiana. I fall in love with the city more to help all supernatural beings because of the way Morgan writes these wonderful amazing stories. Highly, highly recommend reading.

I loved the way that the past was weaved through with the present. When we meet Wick, he's trying to drown his sorrows since the love of his life, Ethan, was taken away six years ago and he hasn't been able to find him since. Ethan has no memory of Wick after he was taken away at 18 and yet some things can't be kept hidden. Ethan's trying to break out from his controlling grandmother and wants to find some form of freedom. This is a pretty quick read but I loved how Wick never gave up and how he and Ethan still have that connection even without Ethan's previous memories. The side characters from Hex are a lot of fun and I hope we get to see more people from F&F. I do think Ethan's grandmother got of a bit light all things considered but it seems like things are looking up for all the people in Hex Indiana!

This story is part of the Cauldron and Kisses multi-author series but can be read as a standalone. This story also connects to many of the authors other stories. Though I believe it can be read as a standalone there are a lot of cameos and character’s lives in multiple books do connect as they are family. Every story we’ve gotten in Hex I have loved and this is another great story and one I’ve been looking forward to. Wick and Ethan are just so cute. Their story and how it developed really drew me in. I was rooting for them the whole time. Plus I loved Florence! I highly recommend this book and all the other Hex stories.

I was waiting anxiously for Wick and Ethan’s book. We met Wick in Van’s story and realized he has been pining for Ethan for 6 years. Ethan is a teacher at Hex University and that is what he was wanted to do. Put in place since he was a child, he was set to marry his best friend Florence, who they both didn’t want to happen. He also was missing his memories but kept seeing dreams of a demon. When they finally meet, Ethan is happy to realize that his dream demon is real. This is the start of the story with how they and their friends worked together to get them together. Love this world and here is hoping there are more books in the Hex world.

How to Summon a Memory by Morgan Lysand is another wonderful story set in Hex, Indiana. We met Wick in previous books and I have been dying for his story. Ethan has been missing for six years and Wick is unable to find him. Ethan’s grandmother has prevented that through many charms. Ethan and Wick eventually find their way back to each other though I do wish the battle had been a little more drawn out. I loved Florence and am so happy they were able to find their own happiness. I am really enjoying this world and I am hopeful that we will see a story about Poe. He is fascinating to me.

I received an ARC from the author for my honest review

Ethan and Warwick story was fluffy with a bittersweet aftertaste, as the circumstances seem to be against them.
I really looked forward to seeing their journey to see them reconnect and achieve their happiness.
They had a hard road to travel, lots of obstacles caused by greed of power, lost memories, and obligations.
I loved their chemistry, possessiveness, protectiveness, the cute familiars, and the invaluable friend that helps them immensely.
I really enjoyed the story, and I’m looking forward to seeing more of this world.

Audiobook - a really enjoyable narrator who makes it easy to figure out which character is speaking.
Story - 4 stars. Not quite the usual captivating story for me, maybe due to it being shorter. The ideas and characters were excellent, as was how it fitted into the series of interconnected standalones, but I just didn't quite feel it. The grandmother's actions at the end didn't quite work, and I wasn't a fan of Florence. Otherwise, it is a nice addition to the series and a good development for Hex.

To fit in the feel of the Cauldrons and Kisses feel Morgan has mixed in a little more angst with this story, and it just works. Wick has been in love with Ethan, the witch who was taken from him when he turned 18 and has never given up and found him once again. Ethan lost the memories of his youth yet has dreamed of his demon, and when he sees him again, he knows this is his true destiny. These two, along with Ethans best friend Flo, find a way to get back what they once lost. I'm so happy to see these two got their so deserved HEA. Wick shows us don't give up hope one day you will find your HEA it just may take some time.

Wick and Ethan! Wick never loses hope that Ethan will come back to him but he doesn’t realize the extent of what his beloved’s grandmother is willing to do. I loved this. It does have some epic pining levels but that honestly isn’t the fault of our MCs. Florence is also the best friend everyone needs to have. I am so glad that these two manage to solve their problem…although I would not be as charitable towards the grandmother!

so anticlimactic

This book had a great build-up to what could have been an epic ending, but then the author just threw it all away with a barely even mentioned magic battle, and not describing any of the events that resolved the story. There was so much there that the author could have written about but they just choose to make it as uninteresting as possible. Huge disappointment. I think I’m done with this author.

In this, we have a witch who had his memories stolen from him and the demon who never stopped loving or searching for him. I absolutely loved these characters and how devoted Wick stayed in his search for Ethan. Ethan had his memories of Wick taken from him when he turned 18, but he still had dreams of the handsome demon he couldn’t consciously remember. I really love Morgan Lysand’s work and have read many things by them. Always a fun story for me.

Wonderful Story

Wick and Ethan were just adorable together! Ethan had his memories suppressed and forgot his Warwick, a crossroads demon. Wick never forgot his wonderful Ethan. Add in a non-binary best friend and a hummingbird and the story starts. I loved this book in the Hex series!

This was such an adorable bonus in this world! The best part for me was the complete faith Wick had in Ethan and their love. There was a lot of pining, waiting and hoping for poor Wick. Ethan might not have remembered Wick in his mind, but he did in his heart! Could not put this one down!

pretty good

This was a pretty good book. I met Wick in Lark’s book and was very curious about the missing best friend. What you find out happens is devious. I definitely wouldn’t forgive that person as easily as he seemed to.
