I'm going to start this review by saying how much I have enjoyed this series. From the very first book each book following has been like a get-together with old friends. Until this one.

The Ghost and the New Neighbor starts right out weird and just gets worse. It was boring, drawn-out, and not all that interesting. It seemed like some characters just made appearances that had nothing to do with the storyline at all. Poor Carla was reduced to a couple of short scenes where she pretty much just sat and talked with a total stranger. Bizarre.

Then there was the actual death which they had to investigate. Talk about strange. Betty Kelty, librarian extraordinaire, was found in a bush stabbed to death. Shoved in a bush near the road with just her feet sticking out. I don't know but this has to be the weirdest spot for a body to turn up. Was it someone's yard? Bushes near a road, at least to me, means a hedge of some sort. But whatever it was it had to be a heck of a large bush to hide a body in.

Then we go thru numerous editions of "Danielle is having twins!" "Lily is pregnant too!" We also get another dose of sad-sack Kelly and her equally uninteresting boyfriend Joe. Not sure what is going on with that couple but I'd sooner they just not appear anymore. And Ian's mom - what a horrible woman. Finally Ian stood up to her. That is another character I could do without. What a negative Nancy.

But the story goes on. We deal with them trying to find Betty's ghost so they can talk with her. Marie and Eva make a couple appearances but offer not much to the actual storyline. (Have those characters gotten old? I hope not because Marie is a treasure and needs to be treated as such.). The story was getting boring, almost like the author didn't really know what to do or how to solve this murder mystery. I thought I had figured out whodunit but just couldn't wrap my head around why. Turns out I had figured correctly but the why was ridiculous. Accidental stabbing? But what about making that bomb? What the heck?

I hated the book. Hated losing so many hours of my life waiting for it to get better andit never did. I only gave it 3 stars because it is part of a series that I absolutely love. Please, please let the next book be better. Let's get back to a well thought out plot filled in with well-written conversations and interesting characters.

Another episode for the mediums of Fredrickport.

It starts with Heather seeing a stranger and the librarian, Betty, at her old neighbours house. Then after Betty turns up dead the strange woman reappears.
When appears and then disappears suddenly in Marlowe House. Danielle and her friends are urpriesd to find she is still alive.
Their new neighbour has special powers that not of them guessed.
Another excellent sequel from Bobbi Holmes

Another great cozy mystery.
Lots of activity on Beach Drive, with wedding plans and preparing for the storks arrival. But it's the new neighbor moving into Pearl's house who has the neighborhood in a deadly uproar.
Danielle is further along on her pregnancy, and I'm delighted it's twins, and to make it better, her best friend, Lily, is also expecting once again.
Poor Heather always gets the short end of the stick with each of the mysteries.
I had no clue Whodunit and was very pleased with the ending.
Such a wonderful series, and I adore each and every character, and I truly hope she never stops writing them.

I'd seen a lot of comments on how this book went "political". I was dreading this to be the case. While, yes, there were a few words here and there that could have signaled a slide into politics, I was relieved that this was not the case. Having a person state their opinion is fine with me and that, really, was all it was. There were no long drawn out diatribes or lectures or parades or events. There were characters stating an opinion on a topic with a single sentence, maybe two in a discussion back and forth and that was it. So, I, will continue to read this series as I feel everyone is entitled to their opinion and even the right to state it. It was not "ham handed" or "overblown" or "over done".

For the one person who seemed particularly upset with the "politics", I have to wonder if they were upset with how Ian stood up to his mother?

Some examples of what I feel some might label "nonsense politics"

1. Ian stood up to his mother being obnoxious about Lily going out to lunch with friends and "leaving Ian to babysit". Ian was firm that he was a parent and not a babysitter. I got the distinct impression that his mother was upset that Lily was happy and able to have a life and not groveling to Ian and felt jealous. I can see how this could be seen as political by those who feel on the side of Ian's mother. It is also possible the reviewer was upset because they identify with Ian's mother and someone "stealing their baby boy". No idea if it is the case but possible.

2. Chris tells Heather about going to a concert with a new girl he doesn't really know and the girl is incredibly rude and makes nasty comments about other concert goers to include a couple plus size gals and a mixed race couple. Chris excuses himself and leaves. Which is fair. Who wants to spend the evening with a bitchy nasty person? While I see how it could be seen as political in what the girl was being nasty about, it wasn't done in a way that particularly bothered me at the time. It was just "Girl said X so I left." Heather is like, "Oh boy yeah" and onto the next topic.

3. The abortion comment was around the fact that Lily is pregnant and the due date happens to be right around when Joe and Kelly's wedding was supposed to be. Ian's mother (and sister) are being their usually petty jealous selves and suggesting that Lily purposefully got pregnant and timed it to ruin the wedding. Ian's mother even says this out loud to Ian. Ian, bless his heart, finally stands up to his mother and asks her if she wants them to get an abortion (this was the slap in the face his mother needed, in my opinion, because it really put a magnifying glass on his mother's ridiculousness). His mother gets all spluttery and realizes how she sounds and says of course not so Ian goes on to state they agree with choice but as a couple agree they would only do it in certain situations....being inconvenient to a wedding is NOT one of those situations. That is it. An opinion stated, which seemed to support both sides of the argument in one sentence.

I'll leave it at that but the jist of my review is that this book was not raging politics or parades or lectures or such. The fact is that things happen in real life and sometimes get included in books and just having a character state an opinion is not the same as the book morphing into a political diatribe.

I share this for any fans who were worried based on some of the reviews.

politics in a stupid book

I have read all of these and really enjoyed them. I put up with the stupidity of too many characters and everyone being “mediums” But obviously the author feels like they have to be beholden to the new “Leftist” ridiculousness. Abortion, racism, etc. I don’t need a lecture when I have paid to read your stupid book. This will be my last. And I am disappointed that the author had to ruin their brand with this kow towing

Wow, 31 books in this series and just waiting for the next one. Not sure if I like the new neighbor, but once again confirmed that I do not like Kelly or her mom.

The mediums of Beach Drive know all about seeing ghosts. They also know about seeing people who are not-quite-dead showing up as "ghosts" until their physical body can heal. But what happens when a murder happens, and Heather KNOWS who she saw with the victim right before the murder. But, the police prove that the person Heather says she saw was actually on an airplane during that very time! It takes a bit of digging for the details to be sorted out, and the murderer is discovered - a quite unexpected suspect!

Another great Haunting Danielle episode!!

I love the Haunting Danielle series!! Bobbi Holmes just keeps coming up with great stories… Just starting a new book in the series is like visiting with very good friends. I like the characters… and how they are so close and like family, and it’s great to see their progression. There’s just such good chemistry! The storylines are intriguing, with bits of humor here and there, and enough twists and turns in the plot to keep me reading longer than I intended! I already have preordered the next book! Can’t wait to get it!

Can this be book #31 in this series already? I've devoured every one and hope that the series never ends. Just when you think that a new twist to the ghost story is impossible, along comes a brand new twist.

The Mediums and their friends on Beach Drive are busy. Both Danielle and Lily are pregnant and yet they are both planning weddings for friends. Meanwhile, Heather sees 2 women walking down the street and shortly afterward one of them is found murdered. The woman she saw with the victim has an airtight alibi: she was in an airplane miles high in the air at the time. And she is the new neighbor beside Marlow House where Danielle and Walt Marlow live. Like I said, new twist. Danielle and her medium friends, and don't forget the helpful ghosts, Marie and Eva, set out to solve this puzzle.

This is a delightful book in a wonderful series. I try to read them slowly so that there's always another one to read.

I guess it’s only fair to have characters you despise since you have characters you love, but Kelly and her mom are the absolute worst. Talk about jealous mean girls! I’m so glad Ian finally stood up to his mom and defended his wife. I hope Kelly has a talk coming her way, too. To be so immature as to accuse Lily of taking her brother from her when Lily is nothing but nice to her is ridiculous. Grow up Kelly! Why she feels so insecure in her relationship with her brother is something she needs to work on. From what we’ve been shown, it’s not that Ian treats his sister badly but more that Kelly wants to be the top person in everyone’s life and doesn’t want to share his love and attention. She should be glad he’s got a loving wife and child.

As for the remainder of the book, I wasn’t thrilled with the whole astral projection storyline. That just seemed too far-fetched and unnecessary. I hope this is a one-off storyline.

I don't normally review or rate these books. They are lovely, easy reads that I am barreling through and thoroughly enjoying. I normally read books that are either far more thrilling or romance heavy. However it has to be said that Ian finally standing up to his mother and having his wife's back was the single best (totally makes up for the Ian/Lily break up moment) thing that has ever happened in these books. Ian's mom is somehow, shockingly, even more annoying than his sister. I absolutely LOVED this book for that one scene alone. Now I am sure Kelly's wedding will occur in the next books, which means it will be Kelly heavy and have a lot of Ian and Kelly's mom in it. And while that is wildly unfortunate, I cannot wait to hear about Adam and Mel's wedding.

Was looks predictable but still a good read

That are sorta hit and miss on predictability for me. This one felt super predictable right from the start. But it was still a good read. I miss Pearl though and really wish Holmes had not killed this character and replaced her with Olivia. I liked Pearl's cantankerous personality always causing conflict. Olivia was annoying. Not looking forward to this new character. She was whiny, and spineless. It felt unbelievable that she believed in one aspect of the paranormal and new age philosophies so profusely she learned to astro-project, but couldn't handle Marie's ghost following her? Didn't make sense. The constant fainting was annoying too. I really didn't like this character. But oh well.

Great addition to a fantastic series of books.

I started with the first free book and moved from one book to the next. Each book is delightful and fun with just enough mystery to keep you reading and guessing.

This is a wonderful series of books. I love the believable characters and the fact that the characters have their own little idiosyncrasies that make them even more enjoyable.

In this book a new neighbor reluctantly gets pulled into the world of ghosts when she is accused of either witnessing or committing a murder.

I would recommend this book and the series. I can't wait for the next book.

I have read all the books in this series up to this one. I think this one was the most disappointing. I like the authors ability to write snotty characters, and have found the interaction with some of the characters pretty fun to read.

Walt and Danielle have become boring even with the expectation of adding to their family. I can see the potential of the new astral projecting character, however it just came across as weak. I think the author has gotten away from the connections made between characters and has tried to hard to expand the paranormal group in the neighborhood which has detracted from the enjoyability of the books.

Great book

I have read all 31 books in the series. They never disappoint. There is always something new and different in each book. My only problem is the character of Kelly. She is so selfish and self involved, she just doesn't seem to fit in with the rest of the gang. Otherwise I love all the rest of the mediums and the in the know regulars. I so hope that Danielle and the twins doesn't end the series.

A real attention grabber.

Every book in this series captured my attention right from the very first page and held it to the last word. I value that the most in a book. I loved the story line in this mystery. Also, great characters. Never start a book in this series before bedtime! I was up most of the night reading. Until I started sleep reading and had to quit until I got some sleep. This is a phenomenal series! Well worth every sleepless night!

Wonderful as usual

Only four stars, because I save five for the really special books. But this was the usual wonderful storytelling and characters. I think Olivia is going to be a great addition to the Beach drive group, if she can stop fainting. My favourite scene was Ian setting boundaries for his mother (of course I also enjoyed Chris doing so with his date).

Excellent, Excellent, Excellent!!!!!! Love this series. My all time favorite. Interesting about the new character. Thinking she’ll be part of the Beach Drive group now. On another note … the apple doesn’t fall from the tree. I can see now where Kelly gets it from. I thought she was the only character I didn’t like… I was wrong. Now there are two!! I can’t wait for the next book 💜 Happy Reading:)

LOVE this series! Took me three tries to get into the first book, but then I was hooked. Have been reading books since 1955 and this series contains one of the small group of fictitious characters that I have come to care about. I read the series for the characters more than the mysteries. Cheers to Ian for finally putting his obnoxious mother in her place.

Always Great Stories

Love all the different mystery angles. The characters are like

mily when reading these stories. These are clean stories without true evilness. They are lighthearted ghost stories that I enjoy and not dark ghost stories. I like the friends and bantering that goes on. Loved this series so much!!

Olivia will make an interesting addition to the neighborhood. Wonder what will happen to her character in the future. She certainly had an interesting if overwhelming first week in town.
