I want to thank Goodreads reader, Brittany kirsten , for this recommendation. I've been searching for a book that would remind me why I love to read. A good story is a good story and this checks the boxes. There are layers of characters that add so much to Logan's journey of healing. Logan is a nine year old boy who has suffered too much trauma at the hands of his father and finds a way to escape, but Logan's path to normal comes with new challenges but he discovers his strength and determination drives his will to seek a better life and soon learns that he is loved and deserves love. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and the pace of the storyline kept you engaged until the end.

First let me just say... WOW!!! This book was top of the chart AMAZING! I have never read anything more touching the Half a Heart by Karen Mcquestion. This book is about a little abused boy named Logan who has had a tough life..... Logan is abused, he cannot speak, he was told that his grandmother was dead, and he witnessed his mothers death... Thats a lot of trauma for one little boy! Whenever Logan was caught out of his room whenever he was told not to come out then things get messy.... No i really mean messy... Logan throws up on his fathers shoe and just as he is about to hit the boy he darts out of the apartment building and is suddenly on his own.

Logan hitches a ride on a moveing truck and finds himself faraway from home.... Of course a boy his age has no idea what to do but Logan survived pretty well out in the world by himself! He found a treehouse to live in and he bought a few bananas for food and whenever needed he was prepared to go dumster diveing. Logan was never considered a missing boy so no one ever came looking for him. This child living alone on the streets was terrible and the way his father treated him was even worse. I thought Logan was very compassionate and loveing and thoughtful and so on and so forth. Logan stole towel from a lady named Joannes house but then he considered her feeling about the towel and remembered his grandmothers facial expression everytime that he upset her so he brought the towel back. Thats compassionate and thoughtful behavior. Logan also rescued Joannes dog from chocking to death and thats being loveing and careing and whatever other feeling that i am missing. Kids are not like that these days only handfuls of them really care for others...... I am happy to say that i am one of those kids... I love you guys especially you Karen for writeing this masterpiece of a book....... Okay back on topic...

Grandma Nan was another big part of the story and she is Logans supposebly dead grandmother! Nan was cut off by Logans father and so Nan never knew what waas going on with her grandson... Okay lets pause for just a second.... Would that not make you so mad? If you were cut off by your son in law who has your only grandson? Honestly i think i would be desprate! Anywho... Nan decided to hire a private detective to help find Logan and she succeds.... In finding Robert! The visikt turned out violent and Robert pushed Nan very hard… I wonder if he has ever heard the term "respect your elders." Oky i am done being a destraction back to the review... So Nan finally gets a lead on where Logan is but so does Robert so the races began with Robert finding Logan first...... Wait what am i doing? I am going to ruin the whole book... Don't look at me like that... Did you really think i was going to give you the whole taco? You had a piece and i had a piece so we both now had half.... Oh now i want a taco..... Give me a minute!

Okay taco breaks over now lets get to my rateing! I give this book five stars...... Oops did i say five i ment five hundred! This was the best book i have ever read in years... This and Insanity on the road to glory..... But we will get to that later right now this is all about Karen Mcquestion...

Karen if your reading this i speak directly to you... This book was AMAZING! Whenever i can i am going to buy your whole library! I have no idea how you did it but you just bujmped yourself up to my favourite author and just with this one book. I have never felt the way ik felt for Logan for anyone else in books.... For some reason i could feel his pain and feel what it is lile to be alone and i have never expierenced anything that this little boy went threw! Don't ever stop writeing because i would be heart broken! Your words fly out of a fiction story and land straight on my heart yourd an amazing women with an amaazing talent and i am going to reccomend this book to everyone i know! Have you given any thought to possibly a second book? Maybe a book on Logans life with Grandma Nan?

For the life of me, I do not understand why this book gets such high reviews. What are the problems? Let me count the ways:

1. The book is predictable. Now, don’t get me wrong, I like predictable, I have a subscription to the Hallmark Channel for Pete’s sake. But if you’re going to do predictable, you’d better have some characters that sparkle. These characters? Meh...

2. Poor little Logan Weber is screwed because while his grandma and a bunch of cops are looking for him, guess who actually DOES find him (in a house in the middle of the night), his drunken abusive father. Really? That guy is the highest performing drunk I’ve ever heard of.

3. Logan wisely flees into the dark of the forest in the middle of the night WHERE HIS DRUNKEN BUM OF A FATHER MANAGES TO LOCATE HIM AGAIN! How, pray tell, did he manage that particular feat without night vision goggles, I do not know.

4. When Logan manages to get his voice back and say what happened to his mother, his drunken, abusive father who has been a tyrant forever, suddenly confesses everything 🧐. Sorry, this seems just a lot bit implausible, given his character.

So yeah, an implausible, predictable book. Hey, wait a minute, maybe they could make this into a Hallmark movie 👍👍.

Logan Weber was only nine years old when he ran away from home, and the brutal father that he could never do the right thing for. He knew if his father found him, he'd be in big trouble. Hopping into an open van and hiding, he left Chicago, completely unaware of where he was going, only knowing it was away. Logan's arrival in Wisconsin saw him finally experience the kindness of strangers. He was frightened, but managed to care for himself in the most basic of ways, not realising his Grandma Nan, whom he'd been told was dead, was searching for him. But who would find him first?

Half a Heart is a heartwarming yet heartbreaking novel of hope, love and survival by Karen McQuestion which I thoroughly enjoyed. Logan was a delightful child even with all his troubles. Ms Tracey was a gem, as were Joanne, Laura and Paul. But Grandma Nan was special; determined, angry, frightened, not prepared to ever to give up in her search for her beloved grandson. Highly recommended.

I'm always reluctant to compare authors, but Karen McQuestion's writing is very similar to Catherine Ryan Hyde's IMHO.

Logan is being abused physically, emotionally, and neglected by his alcoholic father. The women his father introduces into their life tend to allow these acts out of fear. Logan runs away from his next beating and unwittingly stowaway into a moving truck.

Things get better and worse thereafter, taken to a rural region, Logan must figure out how to survive and his chief focus is eating because he is underweight as a result of his neglect. When Robert becomes aware that he may be exposed, he finally searches for Logan. Three women come to his rescue when circumstances lead to his discovery.

This is a feel good story though very unrealistic. Anyone, who has been abused will find this annoying or disappointing or plain ignorant. Those who like happy stories will find their fantasies fulfilled.

I remember from the age of 10 thinking about running away but I knew that I would be found. I can see why another reviewer dissected the book. I thought she was being a little to serious at the time but I can see how this would sow false hope to those is this age group for getting out of abusive situations. The system in the U.S. is woefully against any one who doesn't fit "the narrative", meanwhile those abused as this story outlines continue to be ignored. As a survivor of severe abuse that many have asked me to stop sharing because of their personal distress, I can only say that this story is very realistic in its description of the type of abuse that is allowed to occur.

While writing this review, I recalled having seen an article one the loss of around a thousand children by one of the Child Protective organizations in the midwest in the last 12 months or so, I believe it was Kansas (but links have disappeared on Google (oh what a shocker) and on youtube as well - no surprise there as two channels I watch have been removed just this week for no reason supplied). I spent more than 30 minutes trying to find even one account of this heinous lack of supervision but alas I was unsuccessful (BTW, my former career required doing research as part of the decision making process).

What a really good book. You will find yourself caught up in the life of Logan and everyone that is connected to him in some way. McQuestion does a good job of handling multiple points of view (you get Logan, his grandmother, a speech therapist, an elderly woman, and a married couple) while keeping the main story of Logan and his plight front and center. I really enjoyed the ending and I hope that if McQuestion does a follow-up book that maybe we can turn our attentions on the married couple (Paul and Laura).

"Half a Heart" is about 9 year old Logan Weber who runs away from his abusive father. We find out that Logan's life has been a virtual hell since his mother passed away. Unable to speak, he is forced to use his hands or write down what is going on with him. His father is often drunk and abusive. Logan and his father are living with a woman and her young daughter who does her best to ensure that Logan is on the receiving end of his father's violence. When Logan stows away in a moving van, he ends up in Wisconsin and finds a tree house that just seems to be waiting for him.

The story follows several people, but for the most part you are going to follow Logan and read his sad story about what became of his mother and how terrible his home life has become with his father. He's very smart and does what he can to survive when he realizes that being in Wisconsin and homeless is still better than returning home to his father and his rages.

Joanne is an elderly widow who is hesitant to go and live with her son and his family in Seattle. She wants to stay in her home with her dog Samson and continue to be part of the community. I did find Joanne to be a bit much at times since she definitely comes across as nosy (with regards to her new neighbors) but she was such a great character to find out more about. Joanne comes into contact with Logan when she spots a young boy who she thinks stole one of her towels and possibly threw a tomato at her dog. She eventually seeks out her new neighbors to warn them that they may have a thief in the neighborhood.

Laura and Paul are happily married though Laura feels like something is missing due to them not having children. Laura is an artist and should be thrilled she got asked to do a really cool installation, but she wants to go forward with being a foster parent. Problem is her husband is not so keen on trying to foster.

Logan's speech therapist even gets a scene here and there and you find out that she did what she could to look out for him, but still worries about what became of him.

Logan's grandmother ends up coming into the story when she finally is able to track down the last place he lived via the help of a private investigator she hires.

The writing was really good. As I said, McQuestion did a great job with moving the main story-line forward with shifting points of view. I was worried the whole time for Logan and how the ending would be handled. The flow was great too and I didn't have any trouble keeping the different characters straight in my head. You don't need a chapter heading or anything to call out who is speaking. I think writing it in third person definitely helped with that.

The setting of this book is Chicago and Wisconsin. McQuestion does a great job of showing Wisconsin and you can see why Logan falls in love with the nearby creek, the tree house, and just the general area.

The ending will definitely make you smile. All parties seem to be on the start of something new/good.

This was such a wonderful book and it was a solid 4 stars until the end. This is they type of story where you want and expect a happy ending tied up in a neat little bow, but there were so many rapidly occurring implausible events that it really took away from the story. I almost bumped the rating down to three stars just for one particular character arc, but decided to leave it at four since I really did enjoy the majority of the book. Overall, it's certainly worth a read, but be prepared to suspend your disbelief a lot at the end.

Amazing story about a little boy who unwittingly runs away from home after yet another abusive tirade at the hands of his father and finds himself having to survive on his own. He is brave and smart and I wanted to grab him up, hug him tight, and tell him everything is going to be okay. He winds up living in a tree house on the property of an older woman, fending for himself. Luckily he has a grandmother searching for him. Unluckily, so is his father. It's a beautiful story which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Nine year old Logan knows it's best to keep quiet and make the food last, but when an unexpected opportunity to run presents itself, he takes it. Logan is a resilient, well mannered and resourceful boy considering the life he had with his father. Now he's run away and finds shelter in an abandoned tree house. Unable to speak and on his own, will he get the happy ending he deserves?

I liked Logan's character/personality. Many adults wouldn't cope in his situation, but he made the best of things. When he meets other people he seems to have a positive affect on them and change their outlook on things.

The layout of the chapters and the mix of focus for each one worked well to keep the story moving along. I'm not really sure what genres to put this book in, but it's an enjoyable, well written story that was a nice change from the darker fiction I usually read.

MY REVIEW OF “HALF A HEART” BY KAREN McQUESTION

Kudos to Karen McQuestion, Author of “Half a Heart” for writing such an emotional, significant, and thought-provoking story. The genre for this story is Fiction. The topics discussed in this story are important issues that happen in society today.

The Author describes her characters as flawed, complicated and complex possibly due to the circumstances. If you are emotional like me, be sure to have Kleenex ready. The father in the story is an angry alcoholic, living in a dysfunctional way. He is portrayed as a bully and takes his anger out on his 9-year-old son Logan. Logan has been emotionally traumatized and physically abused by the hands of his father. Terrified of his father, Logan runs away. Besides the emotional and physical scars that 9 year old Logan has, he can’t speak. From what he has seen, psychologically, Logan can’t talk. He is mute. His mother is dead. He has been told his beloved Grandmother has died.

What is so disturbing to me, that in Logan’s adventures, no one seems to want to see a neglected skinny boy, with a taped shoe. Fortunately, there have been a few wonderful and kind teachers in his life.

Logan is resourceful and manages to hide, and get food for a few days. The people he seems to meet are kind and concerned. Not only do some people touch Logan’s life, but Logan has made a difference in a few people’s life as well. I like that there is a lovable dog in the story as well.

Logan doesn’t know his Grandmother is alive,has been searching for him. She has hired a detective. His abusive father kept moving around, and purposely excluded her from Logan’s life. Logan’s Grandmother knows that the father is a very dangerous man. The Grandmother keeps tearfully saying that Logan is “half of her heart”. How will Logan be safe? Will his Grandmother be able to find Logan?

I appreciate that the author brings up such significant issues as physically and emotionally abused children, bullying, alcoholism, addiction and violence. What does it take to help the victims, and stop the violence? The author also discusses the importance of family, friends, hope and love. I would highly recommend this novel for those who read fiction. I received an Advanced Reading Copy from NetGalley for my honest review.

What a wonderful story, beautifully written and well told. This book has really touched my soul.

This is the tale of Logan, a nine year old boy who has lost not only his mother but his protective barrier between him and his cruel father. He suffers in ways most of us would never consider and his life is bleak but when he spots an opportunity to escape, he runs. This is a book full of life, following Logan and finding out what happens to him - and to the man who fathered him.

Skilfully created, this novel tells of love, loss and adventure. A man who has a core of such badness and a black soul is counteracted with people of genuine warmth and compassion. It will make you smile and cringe, laugh and shake your head in horror .. whilst all the time creating hope deep in your heart and, with the final few pages, leaving you with the feeling of a book well read and thoroughly enjoyed. A different kind of read and all the more welcome for it. One which I have no hesitation in recommending, and I find myself looking forward to reading more by Karen McQuestion.

Logan's story was great and I loved his Grandma Nan. In truth, it was hard to put down.

However, I only gave it three stars because I was distracted by the writing. There was a lot of redundancy. I totally checked out and started skim in the middle of a few of the lengthy back story ramblings. When the vocabulary didn't seem to fit with the present person's POV, I found myself thinking, "Would a nine year old boy think like that?" And there were far too many unrealistic "coincidences" and behaviors that caused me to say to myself, "Really?

Nine-year-old Logan is living in fear. There are strict rules at home, but his father still manages to find fault in everything Logan does. Logan doesn't speak, he's always hungry because there isn't much to eat, he doesn't have decent clothes and his too small shoes are taped together. Logan's mother died and his father is living with a girlfriend and her mean daughter. Logan's father is often angry and Logan is afraid of what he might do. During one of his worst outbursts, Logan manages to escape and runs away. He doesn't know where to go, but ends up in a moving van, so manages to get away from the city he lives in. Logan hopes his father won't come looking for him. Surviving on his own will be easier than being at home with his father, even if he has no money and no place to stay. Will he be able to remain undiscovered?

Logan's grandmother is looking for her grandson. Because Logan's father moves around a lot and doesn't want her to know his address she's lost contact. Logan thinks his grandmother, the only person in the world who still cared about him, is dead. Everyone he loves eventually leaves him. Does Logan's grandmother have a chance to find her grandson?

Half a Heart is a beautiful moving story. Logan is a sweet and smart boy. It was heartbreaking to read about his home situation. I had tears in my eyes because of the way Logan's father treats his son. I love it when an author can make me feel so much. Logan is courageous and resilient and I admired his spirit. He's such a wonderful main character. His story is one big adventure that comes from a nasty situation. He never despairs and he comes up with a solution for every problem. Finding out if there would be happiness in Logan's future kept me on the edge of my seat. I read his story in one sitting, Half a Heart is a book that definitely touched my heart.

Karen McQuestion's writing has such a nice easy flow, which makes it possible to completely focus on the story. She skillfully translates what's happening in the mind of a nine-year-old, which is an amazing achievement and alternates between several equally captivating main characters, which makes the story interesting from beginning to end. I loved the kindhearted women in her story. Logan's grandmother is a fantastic person and Logan meets people on his journey who are equally gorgeous inside. I was totally enchanted by Half a Heart, it's such a brilliant story filled with many impressive layers, hope and unconditional love. I highly recommend this impressive book.

Logan is 9 years old and cannot talk . He hasn’t spoke for Mum died when he was 6 year old . He dad was an abusive one and he cannot believe that Granny has been looking for him . I would like to thank Netgallery for having it .

I was blessed to receive a copy of this prior to it's release. Half a Heart was near to my heart. I love reading and up until 2 years ago, when we took in 3 foster kiddos, I would read one or two books a week. Since then I have read TWO books. I started this book on Friday and finished it today. I couldn't put it down. Logan broke my heart. Having a sibling group of four, as we added a baby brother to the original three, we are in the trenches of foster care. I love that the couple are thinking of fostering yet so many of their misgivings are the same ones we had. Then a person said if it was easy and you didn't get attached then you aren't doing your job. My hope is that this book will help those children that need a family... Having said that not every one is not set out to be a foster, but everyone can do something... a meal, hanging out so a mom can shower or get the laundry put away, donating hand me downs,( most of the kids like Logan have nothing but the clothes on their back), furniture, toys ect.. gift cards for gas, food, or entrance to a park, zoo or museum. The ending had so much hope for many of the voices through out the book. Each character was described so well that I could picture them and envision them as I read. Thanks Karen for another great book. This has been my favorite of all your books to date!!!!

I have read so many reviews on this book and was completely surprised at my opinion when I read it. I expected more. Here is my review.
Half a Heart, I had been looking at this little boy hanging out the window on the cover of this book and watching and reading the reviews so I decided to pick it as my Prime free lending book for the month. Sometimes you can’t judge a book by the cover nor can you really trust the reviews. Not saying the book was bad, just wasn’t near a great book.
I am very much a realist, so even a fiction book has to have believable situations and there were several situations in this book that I just rolled my eyes and had to keep reading. Unfortunately these mishaps ruined the book for me. So many failures, not giving away any spoilers, but for just a few, one, the school system is legally required to follow up on possible neglect, two, I wouldn’t think it would take two years to find a person, three, hard to see someone in a window during a terrific storm when the electricity was out from a distance, four, the pit bull would have demolished the intruder.
I hope my opinion doesn’t keep you from reading the book if you wish, it is a quick easy read, written well and the unbelievable parts didn’t cause me to stop in the middle.
I can only give this one 2**’s, I think the storyline concept was good, but the overall story was a little lame.

Logan is constantly reprimanded by his Father Robert who thinks that he is a peasant to deal with. As a result, Logan is trapped in a room isolated from his friends and the world. However when he soon gets the freedom to leave due to a close acquaintance, his life turns upside down for the worse.. How is be going to escape the wrath of his Father when he finds him? The only person who Logan looks up to is his therapist and grandmother. Yet only his therapist understands his mute personality,not his grandmother, and certainly not his father.

If only people understood why he refuses to talk about his life, the better everyone will be. Yet no one really knows why he escaped from his father grip, but Logan has a story to tell to anyone that is willing to listen. Touched and broken by his disappearance, his grandmother tries to track him down but to no avail. Logan will soon have to talk to explain what happened prior to him leaving and also the person who left him behind years ago.

This book would have had perfect five stars if it was not for the lazy ending. Besides that flaw, really good characterization and touching story. Mixed with suspense and drama, I do look forward to reading more novels by McQuestion.

This book tugged me into it and I fell in love with sweet Logan from the start. His story made me cry at the beginning. He has been abused by a horrid father after his mother died from a tragic "accident". As I journeyed with Logan through the story I had many, many emotions. I was super angry at how a little boy was treated so badly by a loser father. I was anxious as he ran away to escape. I was proud he stood up for himself. I was scared when things seemed to be going the wrong way. I laughed. I felt happy. So many things. This is a wonderful story of how love can overcome and bring about healing in a soul and heart. I am so happy I got to read this book and I thank Netgalley and Lake Union Publishers. I am very happy to give my honest review!

Anybody with half a heart would have to say this is a good story, although it is a bit simplistic, reminiscent of a Lifetime movie. It's a nice, easy read for when you want a little suspense but you want to be reasonably sure everything will be okay in the end - just like with Lifetime movies. It was a nice break for me from the other two books I'm reading, both of which are autobiographical and both of which are going painfully slowly.

Heartbreaking and heart warming.

I had a hard time putting this down. I became so angry with how Logan was treated and wanted to know the story had a happy ending. I wasn’t disappointed. Logan was a wonderful character-great story Karen.

This was a very short and easy read. It's equal parts sad and sweet.
