Evening Prayers: For Every Day of the Year

Rate this book
"Blumhardt’s conviction that God is present and powerful and able to still work his will in the world today breathes through every prayer. These are as striking, moving, and provocative now as they surely were when Blumhardt prayed them." —  John E. Phelan, Jr.,  The Covenant Companion End each day of the year peacefully by turning to God with a prayer and a Bible passage.  We want to turn to God at the end of each day, but often don’t find the words to express our deepest feelings and longing. This collection of prayers is one of the few daily devotionals especially intended for use in the evening. Blumhardt’s words bespeak a certainty in God’s nearness. The peace that flows from them comes from an unshakeable conviction that God’s kingdom is indeed on the way. In stormy and challenging times like our own, most of us need this reassurance frequently, if not daily.

Christoph Friedrich Blumhardt (1842–1919) was a German Lutheran theologian and one of the founders of Christian socialism in Germany and Switzerland. He was a well-known preacher. In 1899 he announced his support for socialism and joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany; for this, he lost his position as minister. The next year, he was elected to the state parliament of Württemberg.

He was a significant influence on the theologians Karl Barth, Hermann Kutter, and Leonhard Ragaz, who were also Christian socialists.

Not your standard book of daily prayer. Each day has its scripture and prayer but don't let that familiar format fool you. These are prayers resting on a clear vision and commitment to God's now and coming kingdom. I recommend it.

A collection of daily prayers for the evening through a year by Pastor Christoph Friedrich Blumhardt who "influenced a generation of theologians, including Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Emil Brunner, Oscar Cullman, and Karl Barth..."

These prayers are unique as, unlike other prayer devotionals that tend to center on self, these prayers shift one's self-concerns to direct concern for the world and for the community of believers at large. The prayers are not written with "me," myself," and "I," but with "us," "we," "our." It centers on Christ and the Holy Spirit as the primary need. Each prayer gives attention to the Church and the world at large and seeks God's favor, aid, and mercy.

This is an excellent devotional to inspire a life of prayer.

Christoph Friedrich Blumhardt in his new book “Evening Prayers” published by Plough Publishing House gives us prayers For Every Day of the Year.

From the back cover: We want to turn to God at the end of each day, but often don t find the words to express our deepest feelings and longing. This collection of prayers is one of the few daily devotionals especially intended for use in the evening.

Blumhardt’s words bespeak a certainty in God s nearness. The peace that flows from them comes from an unshakeable conviction that God s kingdom is indeed on the way. In stormy and challenging times like our own, this reassurance can bring us serenity each evening of the year.

Even our good days can stress us out and a bad day can send us spiraling. What can we do? “Evening Prayers” gives us a devotional, by day, for every day of the year. The first day I went to look at was my birthday. Each day has a Bible verse and a short prayer to re-focus our attention on God and away from those things that cause our stress so that we can be renewed and refreshed and have our peace restored. Once the year ends you close the book and the following day you start all over again from the beginning. This is one book you will be returning to over and over again. It is also a great gift to give to friends and family to help them with their days. I recommend this book highly.

Written a century ago, Christoph Friedrich Blumhardt’s prayers are still read & sought after. Born in 1842 & passing in 1919, Blumhardt made quite an impact during his lifetime. From well-known theologians to parishioners, his words were revered & his insights valued.
In this collection, we are treated to daily prayers penned by this great man of God. Compiled much like a devotional, each prayer is subtitled with a date. Accompanying the prayer is a daily Scripture verse.
This would be an excellent addition to one’s daily devotional time and/or prayer life. Each & every prayer is a glimpse into the heart of the author. His declarations of love for God & God’s love for him are simply beautiful. It’s not often that we are able to see into the personal prayer life of anyone, least of all someone so admirable.
His transparency is not only uplifting, but will encourage readers to engage more fulfilling in their one-on-one time with God. One of my favorite prayers is for August 26th. In it, Blumhardt appeals to the Lord according to Psalm 25:4-5. We see him express how hard life can be & that he wants God to show him His way so that God is glorified. That’s a powerful prayer!
Readers will see that these are not prayers for material gain, but to build a lasting, Spiritual relationship with God. This would make a beautiful holiday gift for anyone with a heart for God.
I received a copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are mine.

I was quite interested in this book since I had never used a "prayer book" before. Most Protestant Christians ( I assume) just say a prayer from the heart.
But as I read prayers in this book, it occurred to me that reading a prayer was more like speaking a devotional.
There is a verse before each prayer and there is a prayer for each day of the year (365!).
These prayers give glory to God. Many of the prayers are praise to our Heavenly Father with a supplication to the Father for protection and blessings.
As one reads the prayers aloud it seems that a flow of praise comes from the heart and you may (as I did) add your prayer from the heart at the end of each prayer. A wonderful addition to your daily devotions!
This is a lovely hardback book, full of peace and praise, that will make a wonderful gift or a lovely beside book.
