Raven & Wren #2

A Whisper at Midnight

Rate this book
Private investigator Matilda Wren’s new client is a woman seeking evidence to divorce her husband. She is also the former fiancée of her last client—and dear friend—Lord Ravenhurst. Though he has enthusiastically offered to aid Tilda with future investigations, she can’t very well accept his help in this matter. Especially when her client’s husband is murdered, and Ravenhurst is a suspect.

Hadrian Becket, Earl of Ravenhurst has never felt more alive than when he was solving a mystery with Miss Wren, even when suffering headaches from using his newly acquired ability to touch an object and see a person’s memories. He wants nothing more than to continue their professional association as well as deepen their friendship. Except now he must prove he isn’t guilty of murder, even if that includes working against his former partner.

Tilda can’t believe Hadrian is capable of harming anyone, but how well does she know him? She must rely on her intellect and investigative skill—and not allow her affinity for him to cloud her judgment. When the killer strikes again, Tilda sees that the danger is not to their friendship after all, but to their very existence.

The second book in the series takes place a few weeks after the end of the first book that I really enjoyed and recommend. It is helpful to have read the first to understand the characters background and the Earls special talent. The first 50% of the book was the investigation and I was there for it following leads and clues. Midway through I thought the plot slowed and went in too many directions. The last 20% of the book kicks into overdrive with some twists and turns. Looking forward to the next book. I can see Tilda' working as a PI as she is from a middle-class background and allowed more leeway in her activities. I don't understand her aversion to marriage as other than I am not like a regular girl of the Victorian era.

It’s refreshing to have the female main character taking the lead in investigating while the male main character is the amateur along to assist.

Hadrian’s former fiancée hires Tilda to help her divorce. The engagement between Hadrian and the woman, Beryl, ended when he caught her with her now husband. Tilda is also supposed to find Beryl’s missing jewels, possibly sold by the husband to raise money for a shop he’s invested in. When the husband winds up dead, Tilda and Hadrian have to find the killer.

The mystery is solid and the slow burn is heating up!

Suspicious happenings!

Private Investigator Miss Matilda Wren and Hadrian Becket, the Earl of Ravenhurst are once more up to their eyeballs in intrigue. Raven’s ex fiancé’s husband has been murdered. Stabbed in his bed.
Raven is a suspect. Apparently Louis Chambers hated him! Why? Raven can’t fathom it. After all Louis had married Beryl when Raven found them in a compromising situation.
Coincidently, after three years, Beryl had written and asked Raven for his help?
From the outside it looks as if Raven is a suspect. However the list becomes longer when it’s discovered Louise had tarried with a number of women including his own domestics.
As it is, Tilda is also involved as Beryl has just hired her to investigate Chambers and some stolen heirloom jewellery. Beryl’s seeking a divorce from Chambers. Various twists on this also come to light!
Add to this Raven’s mysterious gift of touching someone or something inducing visions (and headaches) and we have a complex and fascinating inquiry.
As a further shock, it’s been uncovered that Chambers was also being poisoned. Who is the culprit? More than one person had reason to detest Chambers, and a motive to kill.
A newly promoted Detective Inspector Teague is running the investigation. An honest policeman and a friend, but friendship won’t stand in the way of him doing his duty.
Another suspenseful mystery Wren and Raven are involved in. (Although despite the twists, I had deduced early in the piece who the murderer could be. However it’s the getting there that’s exciting.)
That’s not all that occupied the two. Raven is increasingly attracted to Wren, and Wren is increasingly agitated by the attraction and fighting it. Apart from the difference in their stations, marriage is not for Wren! Her independence and career as a Private Investigator is too important!
A great follow up to A Whisper of Death!
(I do feel one needs to read the first in the series to get the full impact of the story.)

We pick up a week after the ending of our first book and what an adventure. I thought the mystery was really good. I was right-ish about mystery but not completely so the ending was a surprise. I thought there was plenty of red herrings and characters to keep us on our toes as our duo went about working to solve the mystery. I like that the MMC is the one with the paranormal abilities and our MFC is the great investigator. That feels fresh and different which I appreciate. After this book, I am not sure if the romance should be continued between the two of them. I am a true believer in listening to when people decline intentions but I suppose we shall see where it goes. This book also set up the next one perfectly. I can't wait. Thank you to the Publisher for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

nice historical mystery/romance

my only major point of irritation is 1860s was not a time where women were so free, even if they are considered middle income (but aside from this - it's fun and the mysteries are entertaining).

I love Tilda and I love Raven - I've never seen an Earl be so backseat to a non nobel/aristocratic woman. What works with this series is that it deals with the normal citizens at the time and not just nobility - most historicals of this type are usually tied to the aristocracy.

I love it when the next book in a series is even better than the one before. This book met that goal and surpassed it. With a mystery as twisty as any rabbit warren, and as many possible suspects as the inhabitants of that warren. I managed to predict a couple of details, but most of it still caught me off guard. I’m getting such a kick out of the evolving friendship between Hadrian and Tilda, and I’m very curious to discover where the author is going to take this in the end. I’m fascinated by the possibilities of the next book, and I can’t wait to dig into it to find out more.

Solid 2nd story and takes place right after the 1st one. It was interesting to see the characters develop emotionally towards each other and I do wonder why Tilda is putting up such resistance to (possible) marriage to Raven. She gives no other reason other than wanting her independence.

Once Grandma dies, she won't inherit much, and then what type of life will that be? She's not really planning ahead well.

Her parents did not have a happy marriage but that didn't seem reason enough for the aversion and obvious denial in her feelings towards Raven. Chalk it up to naivete I guess.

One question has bothered me- I thought in the last book that her grandmother would stop receiving any monthly stipends due to mismanagement of her funds, but the original one must still be valid? That part was not as clear to me... I do know about Raven "funding" the 2nd one but the first seemed vague.

Anyway- really liked how the mystery unfolded, Highlights & Spoilers:
“In that case, she needs someone to find the truth. You must investigate. I’ll hire you on her behalf.” Hadrian had hired her for their last investigation, which had started as a search for the man who’d stabbed him.
“You can’t keep paying me to conduct investigations.”
He arched a dark brow. “Isn’t that what you do?” His tone was wry, and Tilda had to keep from rolling her eyes.

Eureka moments sprinkled throughout:
"First of all, there was nothing between him and Beryl. Secondly, Tilda wouldn’t be upset if there were. Or would she?
Hadrian froze for a moment. Did he have burgeoning romantic feelings toward Tilda? He might."

I think it helps that he has these terrible headaches, it breaks down the walls of formality between them and they can be more vulnerable with each other.

Tilda:
"Hadrian smiled again, a bit more widely, and the butterflies he sometimes stirred in Tilda’s belly returned. He sobered as he brushed his hand over his thigh. “There is only one woman I would consider kissing, and it isn’t Beryl.” He held her gaze.
Tilda’s heart beat a staccato rhythm. Was he flirting with her? And not in the superficial way that was expected when men and women socialize. She wasn’t sure she knew how to flirt back. “Why haven’t you kissed that woman?”
The question tumbled from her mouth. Was that her attempt at flirting, or was she actually thinking of what it might be like to kiss him?"

Well- things progress after some encouragement:
Overcome with gratitude and something far more primal, he leaned toward Tilda. Her lips parted the barest amount. Hadrian didn’t hesitate, nor was there anything in his mind telling him to do so. Closing his eyes, he kissed her.

And then BAM- total stiff arm to Raven. I must say- TOTAL BUMMER
On to the next!

Very enjoyable

Okay, I admit I'm hooked on this series. Though whilst I love the interplay between Lord Ravenhurst and Tilda Wren it does make you wonder how any couple managed to marry in Victorian times. Especially when you consider the restrictions on how, when and where men and women could meet. One thing that does slightly annoy me is that most authors seem portray the women in their books as being at odds with the way society treated women and whilst there is no denying that some women did feel aggrieved at the way they were treated, there were many more who simply accepted the status quo. In fact quite a few ladies liked it that the men-folk made all the decisions and dealt with all the tedious things in life like the finances. They saw it as unladylike and somewhat distasteful to even talk of such a thing. Though I suppose those ladies would not make such interesting characters.

March 1868 Mr Louis Chambers has been discovered dead in his bed. His wife, Beryl is the ex-fiancée of Lord Ravenhurst. Ravenhurst employs investigator Matilda Wren to investigate the murder and the theft of Mrs Chambers's jewellery. With his gift of seeing visions he assists.
An entertaining and well-written historical mystery with its two likeable main characters supported by a group of varied personalities.

The second book in the series & it could be read on its own but I have to read a series from the start & love how relationships develop. I love both Hadrian & Tilda they have become friends but there’s also that spark between then which Hadrian especially is trying to temper s he knows Tilda has no wish for a romantic involvement. I enjoyed the book & there are a number of suspects as Louis Chambers was not a well liked man, to say the least. There were twists & turns as well as surprises until the villain is revealed & I certainly didn’t see it coming. A very well written book which had me engrossed from cover to cover

A clever murder mystery with too many suspects and not enough physical evidence kept our intrepid investigators on their toes.

The murder of Louis Chambers was mysterious, but not all that surprising, considering his less-than-charming personality. This gave rise to a surplus of suspects, all very plausible as the investigation gathered more evidence. The identity of the actual murderer was cleverly concealed until the end, with some surprising twists.

Tilda and Hadrian were delightful, as expected. They work together so well, trying to make better sense of Hadrian's ability and how to use it without compromising his wellbeing. The attraction between them was stronger than before, but both of them were extremely hesitant to act on it. I enjoyed their surreptitious glances and thoughts, and I do think they will make an excellent couple, but for now, they are solidly in the friendship camp.

If you like your historical fiction with murder and suspense, then this is for you. I've been enjoying this series a lot so far. This book can be read on its own, but I think it's worth reading them in order.

Thank you to the publisher for providing me with a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This has been such a delightful series so far. She does a great job in blending in the murder investigation with the "what are we" journey of the protagonists. It doesn't feel overwhelming. She's able to keep the mystery with both throughout the story.

The investigation was different and interesting. There were enough red herrings where you were able to be surprised by some parts of the investigation.

She was even able to sneak in a bit of romantic tension, which left me squealing. A super huge plus.

I really loved that neither interfered with the other.

I'm excited to see where this will lead and how long she will keep the romantic tension, if at all. Listen, I'm a romantic girly at heart. I will always search and want an HEA. And it's surprising to say that I love this enough where I don't need an HEA. (IT WOULD STILL BE NICE THOUGH 😭)

I also love that we're discovering Hadrian's power with him. And I'm so excited that we're gonna (hopefully) see more of it in the next installment. I love that Tilda can help sooth him, whether by nearness or touch. Just another squeal oasis in this romance desert landscape.

I'm sad I have to wait till July 😭

This is the second in the series. I recommend that they be read in order just for the backstory but, this could be read as a standalone.

The story is interesting and complex, with many interesting characters and more than a few suspects to the murder.
There are quite a few twists in the plot that you don't see coming.

The chemistry between Tilda and Hadrian is slowly heating up as they work together.
I love the relationship between Tilda and her grandmother.

I cannot wait for the next book in the series!

Once again they investigate together, but their push-pull relationship became tedious. Clearly he likes her, but at the end when he makes a move she gets upset and tells him no. It rather spoilt it for me.

I will continue with the series, and there are things I don’t love about it. The dialogue is pretty stilted and feels weirdly formal even for the time. Like the word “whilst” for example. I found it even three times in the same page once. Feels like an affectation. I also can’t quite figure out the aversion to marriage thing going on. Her experience has been more indifferent than bad and she really has no way to support herself despite her interests and ability. I can appreciate not wanting your identity swallowed up in another; I can even appreciate that she is reluctant to be a countess. But to fully eschew marriage on principle feels incongruous with her life experiences.

Thanks to BookSprout for a copy of this ebook and this is my freely given opinion.

Tilda Wren and Hadrian Becket's adventures continue in book 2. Shortly after Hadrian and Tilda have ended their last adventures, Hadrian finds himself missing his time investigating with his new friend Tilda. Tilda, despite feeling the same, is very aware of their differing lives, and seeks to continuing building her business as an investigator. But her latest client happens to throw her back into Hadrian's world, as her services are required by his ex-betrothed, as the woman seeks evidence to go forward with a divorce from her philandering, thieving husband. The woman draws on her past relationship with Hadrian for aid as well. But things quickly escalate to throw the Earl and Tilda back together again, when Tilda's client's husband is found stabbed to death in his bed, with Hadrian marked as a possible suspect.

Another interesting murder investigation, with a growing cast of suspects, including Hadrian, thanks to a victim that increasingly becomes less likeable the more you read about him. Tilda and Hadrian work together again to solve the case, but now Teague, their former compatriot with the police has been promoted, and they find themselves at times in conflict with him, especially with Hadrian on the list of suspects. But as they work together, Hadrian starts to grow more aware of his growing admiration for Tilda and his desire to be closer to her. Tilda likewise is more aware of Hadrian, but more leery of it, especially considering their differing social status and expectations for their future. A very slow burn to their growing awareness of each other, especially with Tilda putting up barriers, not willing, at present to explore anything more beyond friendship and compatriots.

I am enjoying the slow burn and build of their relationship, much more than I expected. I also love the secondary characters and their development, though I was hoping for more of Tilda's grandmother, and housekeeper - they are very sweet. More was teased out about Hadrian's past, namely his break up with his ex and his feelings about that, which acted as a nice foil for his developing relationship and feelings for Tilda. It left me wanting a bit more personal information about the two of them as well, though, such as more about Tilda and her mother, a bit was hinted at again here, as well as about Hadrian's life as an Earl, since thoughts were teased about how Tilda would not fit into his life.

Satisfying story in itself, and left with growing curiosity as to where Tilda and Hadrian go from here... and when they do hook up, please, please, please make it worthwhile - by then, my patience (of which there is little) will need full-blown earth shaking fireworks to reward it!

Darcy Burke delivers another spellbinding tale in A Whisper at Midnight, the second installment of her Raven and Wrath series. With a gripping plot, top-tier characters, and a unique blend of historical mystery and paranormal intrigue, this book is a standout addition to the genre.

The story reunites us with Hadrian Becket, Earl of Ravenhurst, and Matilda Wren, a sharp-witted private investigator, as they tackle a case that’s as personal as it is perilous. When Tilda takes on a new client, Mrs. Beryl Chambers who is a seeking a divorce from her unfaithful, abusive husband—the client is none other than Hadrian’s former fiancée. Things take an even darker turn when the husband is found murdered.

Implicated in the crime due to his prior connection to Beryl, Hadrian becomes a prime suspect. Desperate to clear his name, he hires Matilda to uncover the truth. Though their partnership is unconventional given the circumstances, Hadrian and Matilda once again team up, combining his supernatural ability to glean memories from objects with her investigative prowess.

As the investigation unfolds, they uncover a growing list of suspects, as the late Louis Chambers was a man of many enemies. He preyed on his staff, mistreated his wife, squandered family wealth, and maintained a secret mistress. The stakes rise with a second murder, adding urgency to their efforts. Darcy Burke keeps readers on edge with twists, turns, and an unexpected reveal that had me eagerly flipping pages.

The chemistry between Hadrian and Matilda is electric, their banter sharp and their partnership evolving in fascinating ways. Matilda’s reluctance to embrace the potential between them adds an emotional layer that balances the fast-paced plot. Hadrian’s quiet determination to win her over adds depth to his character, making him even more endearing.

What truly sets this story apart is Darcy Burke’s brilliant storytelling. She seamlessly weaves a clever mystery with compelling character development adding just the right touch of Hadrian’s special abilities. Every twist feels earned, and the shocking reveal of the villain left me reeling.

As if the case itself weren’t enough to thrill readers, Burke leaves us with a tantalizing setup for Hadrian and Matilda’s next adventure. Their growing relationship and unresolved tension promise even more intrigue ahead, and I can’t wait to see where Burke takes them next.

Darcy Burke proves once again why she’s a master of her craft, delivering a historical mystery that’s both fresh and unforgettable. Fans of clever sleuthing, slow-burn romance, and vivid storytelling won’t want to miss this!

I found myself pleasantly surprised by Darcy Burke’s first mystery, which intrigued and engrossed me. However, book 2, A Whisper at Midnight, is definitely more in the vein of “cozy mystery” that I don’t care for, and thus, I find myself unimpressed.
The topics this book tackles feel very relevant, with no-fault divorce being one of the things that are at risk of being eliminated under Project 2025. The difficulties women in the Victorian era had in seeking a divorce compared to men in the era are well-documented, with this story in particular being just over a decade after the passage of the Matrimonial Causes Act, outlining that while women could be set aside simply for adultery, a woman needed two reasons to divorce her husband.
And I liked how this concept tied to the male protagonist, Hadrian Ravenhurst, through his former fiancee, with the tides turning further early on in the book when her husband is murdered.
And both leads are still fairly interesting in what they contribute to their partnership. Hadrian’s unpredictable precognitive abilities provide a unique angle for the character dynamic and the investigation itself. Tilda was all right, but I definitely didn’t feel like she made as much of an impression this time around.
The overall story structure also did not particularly engage me. There were moments of intrigue, but I largely found myself feeling very detached and unenthused by the story overall. None of the “plot twists” particularly wowed me, while as a comparison, the first book at least kept me somewhat on my toes.
I can chock my apathy up to a bunch of factors, from the chaos of this week and how it’s generally impacted the quality of my reading to the fact that historical mystery (cozy or otherwise) rarely has enough steam for me to last multiple books. So, my reasons for being disenchanted are all purely personal, and has me contemplating whether I plan on continuing yet another Darcy Burke series. However, given the rave reviews from other fans, I feel those that don’t have similar baggage and hangups with historical and cozy mysteries that I do will surely enjoy it.

A Whisper at Midnight by Darcy Burke
Raven & Wren #2

Delightful return to a series that is one I am avidly interested in following ~ Tilda & Hadrian are perfect for and with one another even if they don’t know it yet.

What I liked:
* Miss Matilda “Tilda” Wren: twenty-five years old, lives with her grandmother, father was a detective and taught her his skills, caring, responsible, not close to her mother, frugal, inquisitive, bright, capable, marriage-averse, rather intrigued with Hadrian,
* Hadrian Becket, Earl of Ravenhurst: thirty-years-old, politically active, wealthy, nearly killed in book one of the series, paranormal psychometry ability post near-death experience, hires Tilda to find the murderer of his ex-fiance’s husband and clear his name, drawn to and intrigued by Tilda
* The slow growth of the potential relationship between Raven & Wren
* Some of the supporting characters that I wouldn’t mind seeing again…and the addition of a few more in this book
* That the writing felt “of the period” as did the characters dialogue and behavior
* The descriptions that engaged all of my senses
* The plot and sub-plots, pacing, setting, and writing
* That I was invested in the characters, story, and outcome of the murder mystery
* Wondering if Tilda will ever overcome her negative feelings regarding marriage
* That I didn’t know who the actual killer was till it was revealed
* Hoping that there is another book in the series to look forward to

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about what makes some people killers
* Thinking about the divide between the classes and genders during this time period

Did I like this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Definitely

Thank you to the author and Oliver Heber Books for the ARC – This is my honest review.

Wow, this is a wonderful series. If you have not read book one it would be best if you do. The characters carry over from book to book. Miss Matilda Wren is trying to start her own Investigating business which is hard to do as single woman anytime but in 1868 it was unheard of. With the help of Lord Ravenhurst/Hadrian this is her second case. Unfortunately, this case was supposed to be about a lady wanting to divorce her husband, due to abuse and cheating. Within one day it becomes a murder case! With Harridan being a suspect too. The Lady happens to have been engaged to him at one time. She was caught with the man she ended up married to when Harridan call off the wedding. Now Wren will have to solve the case and prove Harridan had nothing to do with his murder. Oh, my what an engaging story it will keep you on the edge of your seat thru out. I didn't want to stop reading even late into the night. There is a ton of suspects and many have a lot of secrets and some you would not have guessed had a reason to kill him. This is a fast-paced story with lots of twist and turns as our couple find tons of clues with the help of Harridan special talent of feeling things when he touches people or items. Even as this helps the case it also cases him horrible headaches too. Wren is very concern about his health. The growing attraction between them that started in book one continues in this book. Both have feelings for the other and both have strong reason why neither want to marry. This series is great as each book solves the mystery and yet we have the ongoing friendship and more between Wren and Harridan. Hum what will the next book lead to, more than attraction and a kiss? I can’t wait to find out. Be sure and get you books and get started you will not be sorry. I received and ARC from the author and wish to thank her. This is my honest opinion and am freely giving it.

The second Raven & Wren mystery has even more twists and turns than the first one did, if that's even possible!

I really enjoyed watching Tilda and Hadrian solve their second (and kind of third, maybe even fourth? since there were multiple things going on and just about as many culprits) case. Ms Burke does a nice job of keeping everyone guessing as the story progresses, and though Hadrian's ability kind of feels like "cheating," I quite like that aspect of the story. They still have to come up with a way to get actual evidence to share with the police, at least--his visions mostly serve as a way to narrow down the suspect list for our two main investigators. I'm hoping the next book will give us some kind of an explanation for his talent, but even if it doesn't, I'm here for it.

I'm also here for other things, should our two main characters decide to take that further in the next book as well ;)

While A Whisper at Midnight *could* be read as a standalone, Hadrian's abilities began in the first book (apparently brought on by the attack he suffered in the beginning of the book)--and he and Tilda met and began working together in that one as well--so I really recommend reading the series books in order to get the complete picture.

Now don't mind me, but I'll just be sitting her patiently waiting for the next one, which was deliciously teased at the end of this book. And maybe quietly chanting friends to lovers. PLEASE give us friends to lovers eventually! under my breath while I do ;)

I enjoyed this book a lot. I would recommend reading the series in order. The first book sets up the unique relationship between the characters and and their backgrounds. It’s not crucial that you read them in order you can still enjoy the story but it would allow you to jump in where the last book left off.

The investigators in this light and quick paced mystery series are an unlikely pairing. She, Matilda Wren, a spirited spinster with the gift for investigation and he, Hadrian, Lord Ravenhurst, a man with a newly acquired skill that appeared after falling and hitting his head. The new ability comes in handy when helping with those investigations. As their working relationship evolves their friendship starts to shift with both questioning whether to acknowledge the new development.

The story revolves around the mysterious death of the husband of Tilda’s new client who’s seeking her help to secure a divorce from said man. Generally despised by many it seems everyone associated with him is a suspect in his murder including Hadrian, Tilda’s partner. As they work tirelessly to find out the truth and clear Hadrian name, he tries to hone his new unusual ability to untangle all the conflicting evidence they discoverer. The story has lots of twist and turns which makes figuring out who the murderer is ahead of the reveal a challenge.

The ending of this book sets us up for a new case for Tilda’s and Hadrian to investigate and see where their relationship leads them. I’m so looking forward to it!.

Darcy Burke has crafted another riveting tale in her historical romance and mystery series. A Whisper at Midnight brilliantly combines intrigue, suspense, and the supernatural, keeping me hooked from start to finish.

At the heart of the story is Miss Matilda "Tilda" Wren, a fiercely independent private investigator, and Hadrian Becket, the enigmatic Earl of Ravenhurst. Their dynamic is a highlight, as they navigate the challenges of solving a murder while grappling with their evolving relationship. Tilda’s sharp wit and determination shine, while Hadrian’s newfound paranormal ability—to touch objects and glimpse memories—adds intrigue and peril, with debilitating headaches and no control over the visions.

The stakes are high as Hadrian’s ex-fiancée’s husband is found murdered, and he becomes a prime suspect. Despite their history, Hadrian hires Tilda to uncover the real culprit. The investigation takes them deep into secrets and betrayal, while their emotional connection adds depth. Tilda’s independence as a private investigator and her fear of losing it makes her resistance to Hadrian’s affection relatable and poignant.

The murder mystery is meticulously plotted, with red herrings and twists that keep readers guessing. I was thrilled when my suspicion about the murderer was confirmed—only to learn they were guilty of other crimes!

Darcy Burke excels at weaving romance, mystery, and the supernatural into a captivating narrative. A Whisper at Midnight is a standout in a series that just keeps getting better. I can’t wait to see what’s next for Tilda and Hadrian.

I enjoyed A Whisper at Midnight, Book 2 in the Raven & Wren historical mystery series by Darcy Burke. This new addition to this series sees the introduction of Mrs. Beryl Chambers, Hadrian Becket's former fiancee who was caught in a compromising position with her now husband, Louis Chambers, while still betrothed to Hadrian some years ago and from whom she is now seeking a divorce. Unexpectedly, Beryl's husband becomes the victim of murder - and Miss Tilda Wren is again employed by the Earl of Ravenhurst to clear him of all suspicion in the crime. But who is the culprit in this murder (and others)? There seems to be no shortage of unlikable and unsavory characters for Tilda and Hadrian to sort through, as they work together to solve the mystery, their attraction growing ever stronger the more time they spend in each other's company.

While I enjoyed revisiting Tilda and Hadrian, as the intelligent, independent and attractive female private investigator and the tall, dapper and handsome earl with paranormal abilities, I had a harder time getting through this story than the first book. For me, the pacing felt off, and the first third of the novel was slow and somewhat redundant, as Burke sought to encapsulate what occurred in the first Raven & Wren historical mystery to bring readers who start the series with Book #2 up to speed. Having read A Whisper of Death (and enjoyed it!), I found I didn't need the recap; at times, it bogged down the tale for me. Additionally, the timeline became a little fuzzy, with the events of Book #2 starting less than a week after the last book, and yet seemingly, a few weeks have gone by with regard to other events in the story. So, the Raven & Wren timeline seemed a bit off to my mind.

Despite my hangups with this installment, however, it was a solid, well-written addition to the series, with two very likable, admirable main characters, and the spark of their slow-burn romance was enjoyable as well.

I love this series written by Darcy and am totally caught up in these events too. This is the second book in the Raven and Wren trilogy and the relationship between Hadrian Becket, the Earl of Ravenhurst and Miss Matilda Wren is growing closer.

Hadrian’s former fiancé enlists the help of an attorney who recommends Tilda to secure a divorce from her husband. The lawyer recommends Tilda to find her missing family jewels as a separate issue from the legal divorce and Tilda is more than happy to assist. The client is quite sure her husband has stolen her jewels and given it to his mistress; she needs proof to include it as one of the reasons for divorcing her husband. Things get decidedly worse when said husband turns up dead.

Hadrian and Tilda work the case and, as Hadrian is one of the suspects on the list, they are both determined to clear his name and find the actual murderer. There is also the added reason of the deceased being poisoned which turns up later during the autopsy.

All in a good murder mystery that kept me engaged and desperate to find out who the perpetrator(s) was / were. I thoroughly enjoyed this second book too and am waiting expectantly for the final instalment of the Raven & Wren mysteries. Would recommend that you read the series to get a better picture of how Raven and Wren partnership developed as well as how Hadrian came by his ‘gift.’
