A presentation of the basics of yoga, meditation, diet and health through a weaving of the author’s remarkable personal journey, with case examples of his clients, plus exercises for the reader to improve themselves holistically-diet, yoga, breathing, herbal remedies, etc. This is an inspirational and programmatic book to find the guru in you. As the first male super-model, Cameron Alborzian had a life that many dream of-working with the most prestigious designers in the world and appearing in cultural landmarks like Madonna’s “Express Yourself” video. Even though by many standards he had achieved success, his real achievement came when he decided to leave fashion at the height of his popularity and pursue a life of Ayurvedic healing and yoga. For the past eight years he has become a sought-after healer and reforms his clients’ lifestyles using these methods. He teaches what he has learned first hand: the material world will not bring sustainable happiness, but we can all find joy if we understand that we have the power to become our own guru, and begin a meaningful path based on the principles and lessons outlined in The Guru in You.

I picked up The Guru in You because its author, Cameron Alborzian, seemed so healthy, fit, and poised on his Dr Oz show appearance. Retiring from modeling in high fashion (and a Madonna music video), Alborzian went on to study yoga and Ayurvedic medicine. His book is not one to read through, but a blueprint for starting one's spiritual practice. He urges readers to pause after each chapter to practice certain exercises introduced therein. The Guru in You spends a lot of time laying the mental groundwork for such a practice, and relatively little time on specific yoga postures and the tenets of Ayurvedic medicine. It's a big-picture type of book. Although I found it was a bit hokey for him to refer to himself as "Yogi Cameron" and that he writes in the slightly verbose way one adopts when trying to be more formal than usual, I think this book would be useful for an absolute beginner to follow through.
This book was sent to me thanks to a goodreads giveaway. This would not be a book I would typically purchase, but would possibly pick up at the library. I liked the overall message of the book and as a somewhat beginner in yoga I did find many things helpful. At the same time, it was sometimes hard to get through. The personal stories at the beginning of chapters were annoying (lots of name dropping-Madonna! Prince! Elton John! and reminding you that he was a model) but if you skim (or skip) those parts and read the meat of the book I believe there are some good takeaways. I found the posture guide very useful, especially outlining the benefits of each pose. People who are interested in or just starting out in yoga would enjoy this book. Hardcore yogi's may find it useful as a reminder/reference.
This book has cleared up so much for me. I love both the philosophy behind it and the practical applications. Yogi Cameron manages to pass across his knowledge, enthusiasm, and honesty about both his own practice and the practice of Ayurveda and yoga in general. I love the biographical details as well. This is going on my favorite shelf, both here and in my own practice! Highly recommended to anyone seeking practical, feasible and true transformation.
Re-read May 2019 - still inspiring
Re-read June 2021 - This book (like all the others by Yogi Cameron) is so full of wisdom and it is worth rereading. I learn something new every time, there is so much wisdom in there.
I thought this book was okay. I don't really think it was the book for me. It was extremely general and his story was nice, but seemed to me he preferred name dropping... It was a quick read so I didn't waste too much time with it, but it didn't really stick with me. Also when he shared personal stories of clients they were so general I didn't really see how he helped them. He did remind me of my father when he was younger (the photos) and since my dad has passed away, there was a nice/strange sense of reminiscing.
Was a good read & layer out a good plan for anyone interested in becoming a yogi or changing their lifestyle. Informative & entertaining while also instructive. You have to want to change In order to be willing to change. Let of of material objects and focus on oneself. I myself have used the power of yoga to heal, & believe in it whole heartily. Set your intentions, find your peace....Namaste
In the interest of being non-judgmental, I'll congratulate this guy on publishing a book. On the other hand, I will also be realistic and say that not all books need to have been published, and certainly don't need to be read.
If you're interested in either Ayurveda or yoga, there are about ten thousand other books that would better serve you.
I did not find this to be a good yoga/lifestyle resource in general. Although the author tried to make his experiences seem relevant to the reader, I found them to be off-putting and highly cheese-tastic.
It's was alright. Not the greastest read... talked a lot about himself and his early days before yoga... I didn't care to hear about that. The Ayurveda ways were interesting to learn about.
With a title like this, it could only suck, and it did. All the focus on modeling and his friends was a sleeper, and the tone of writing seemed fake, and as another reviewer said, cheesy.
The Guru in You is a great book about Ayurveda and yoga. Though Alborzian mentioned that he was a model over and over again, the content of this book makes up for it. This is an amazing book for a beginner in yoga/Ayurveda. The flashbacks in this book are also very helpful. It shows the reader the different situations the author has been through. It helps the reader understand from the author's perspective. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is trying to start yoga. The ancient Ayurveda tips are extremely helpful. Overall, this is a good book.
This was an excellent book for learning what Ayurveda is and how to get started. For someone familiar with Ayurveda this book would only be good as a refresher.
