Broken GatesBook Two of the Crystal FaeWritten By M.T. SylerIn a realm where destiny is etched in the fabric of existence, Flora's awakening from a cursed slumber is anything but normal. Her eyes flutter open, but her memories are like elusive shadows, dancing on the edge of her consciousness. The room is unfamiliar, and the air is thick with the weight of forgotten sorrows. Nothing make sense to her but at least she isn’t dead anymore.

Wrenched from the clutches of death in a distant world, Flora's journey takes a turn when she discovers she is betrothed to the prince of Seelie. But marriage is the last thing on her mind. The last memories before her slumber were of a different existence, a different demise. As she tries to untangle her past, she's caught up in a tale of fate and magic that's more tangled than a pixie's hair.

On the other side of fate, Klein, a deadly thief, faces a different kind of predicament. Taking on a job that led him to the Court of Ostera, and an unexpected twist of destiny revealed Flora as his mate. However, a cruel future awaits him in the dungeons, and the revelation of their connection remains a secret bound by the chains of his impending execution.

The fae world, with its shimmering courts and magical landscapes, becomes the battleground where Flora and Klein confront the very threads that weave their destinies. As elemental powers clash and kingdoms stand at the crossroads of Seelie and Unseelie, the two protagonists fight against the predetermined path that seeks to control their lives.

Will they unravel the secrets that bind them, or will fate's grip tighten, threatening to snuff out the flame of their forbidden connection? As the realms of magic and romance collide, it's a wild ride that could shake the Fae world to its sparkly core. Get ready for a story where love takes on fate, armed with nothing but a sprinkle of magic and a whole lot of wine.

Broken Gates was great from start to finish. It does a great job of reminding readers what happened in the first book and then continuing the story. I love the new characters we meet and how the story flows. I loved getting to move through different parts of the fantasy world and see the different people and cities. There was heartbreak and conflict and an ending that keeps you wanting more. I can’t wait for the next book.

3.5 stars rounded up.

I read this immediately after the first book, and it was a bit more of a struggle to get through. While still interesting overall, it seemed to suffer from that dreaded "middle book syndrome" where the main goal is to get the characters/plot from point A (end of book 1) to point B (start of book 3).

In book one, their respective desires for freedom and a simple life of happiness were the driving factors behind Mel's and Klein's actions. Such motivations seemed to be lacking here. Instead, they seem to just be moving whistfully through the story with lack of direction/goals, instead being more lead forward by side characters. The plot was happening to them, instead of them shaping it.

Similarly, in book 1, the anticipation of what was going to happen when the two narratives met kept me engaged. Instead it was relying mostly on my care for what happens to the characters to keep me invested.

I LOVED MEL and unfortunately it didn't carry over as well to Flora. I wondered a few times if the shift away from 1st person POV had anything to do with my change of feeling. I would have loved to see more interntion/motive behind Flora. Once she negotiated Klein's freedom, she seemed to just kind of stuck. Would have loved to see her maybe try to embrace the princess role a little more and become invested in learning how to be a good ruler for her people and really understand the culture.

The ending was interesting, but could have used a lot more foreshadowing and hints throughout. Instead of just the foreboding "something is going to happen." Weaving threads of information throughout the story more (particularly about the titular gates and their power) could have lead to a bigger payoff as the puzzle pieces come together.

I'm at the point now where I still want to follow these characters and finish out their story. I'm DESPERATE to see Flora & Klein actually interacting. So I am hoping that the 3rd book will wrap everything up. I could see doing some spinoffs with side characters, or in the same world, but I'm hoping that this will be a nice 3 act play with the 3rd book finishing it off with a well deserved happy ending.

Holy wow! I love the twists and turns this book takes. I read the first book Shattered Crystal and loved it but book two could be read first if you wanted too, because book one is a prequel. However you’ll miss the Easter eggs and be just as confused as Flora in this world she’s woken up to.

This has elements of sleeping beauty with fae and magic. I love mystic and Kline. Plus Mr. Red flags for days is hard to resist. Parts of this broke me, trust me when I say it’s worth the read! 5 stars. I’m dying for book 3.

Fantastic story!

The sequel Broken Gates to M.T Syler's Crystal Fae series comes with so much found in other great fantasies. This story reminded me of the Never Ending story because Mel/ Flora dreams about another world in which she could live. In the sequel, Flora discovers there's a big difference between watching the world as a outsider and being apart of this world and realizing how little she actually knows. This story also follows the two rogue characters from her dreams as they go on to discover how their fates were destined to be twisted together

This book will definitely take you through the what in world phase of your brain and then leave you wondering if you’re gonna see the characters die cause of their actions.
