From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jana DeLeon, the next installment in the bestselling Miss Fortune series. What's a little arson between friends? Undercover CIA agent Fortune Redding spent her first three weeks in Sinful, Louisiana dodging insults, makeup advice, guard dogs, bullets, and Deputy Carter Trahan, both professionally and personally. But just when she thinks things are going to settle down in the small bayou town, someone sets her friend Ally's house on fire. Carter, who'd just started pursuing Fortune on a personal basis, goes back into cop mode and admonishes her to stay out of his investigation. This time, he swears he won't issue any warning before arresting her. But with her friend's safety hanging in the balance, Fortune can't resist taking matters into her own hands and calls on her partners in crime fighting, Ida Belle and Gertie, to help. This is a mission for Swamp Team 3.
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jana DeLeon was raised in southwest Louisiana among the bayous and gators. Her hometown is Carlyss, but you probably won't find it on a map. Her family owned a camp located on a bayou just off the Gulf of Mexico that you could only get there by boat. The most important feature was the rope hammock hanging in the shade on a huge deck that stretched out over the water where Jana spent many hours reading books.
Jana and her brother spent thousands of hours combing the bayous in a flat-bottom aluminum boat, studying the natural habitat of many birds, nutria and alligators. She would like you to know that no animals were injured during these "studies," but they kept makers of peroxide in business.
Jana has never stumbled across a mystery or a ghost like her heroines, but she's still hopeful.
She now resides in Dallas, Texas, with the most spoiled Sheltie in the world.
This is fourth in a series with a little continuity over entries, but not a lot. You're probably fine picking up here, though I recommend reading the first before any of the others so you know the key background points.
This one was a bit more scattered than the others and the plot was more fractured, too. It was still good and I enjoyed all the stuff from prior stories. Just not as much. And it could be that it suffers from reading right after finishing the third (making it feel too similar).
I loved the romantic developments in this one, not least because there's less friction about Carter's investigation (he gets sidelined by the feds before Fortune and posse get too involved).
And I don't have a lot more to say. It was good. But not as good as some of the others. Four stars worth of entertainment at any rate.
A note about Chaste: There are a couple of kisses with Carter and those are outstanding. But still nothing sexy or that I'd consider steamy at all. So it's pretty chaste.
A great addition to the hilarious antics of the Sinful crime fighters. The ability of this series to cause me laugh out load moments remind me of early Stephanie Plum books.
Swamp Team 3 is the fourth book in the twenty-book Miss Fortune Mystery Series. Character arcs carry over, so, typically, starting at book 1 is best. However, I noticed at the beginning of this book, the author provided a short info dump highlighting the need-to-know facts from books 1-3.
Undercover CIA agent Fortune Redding and Ida Belle and Gertie are going strong in this book and referring to themselves at Swamp Team 3! The mystery centers around Ally, Fortune’s new friend, when her house falls prey to an arsonist. Complicating matters was Carter and Fortune’s fledgling relationship getting in the way of the Swamp Team 3 bulldozing into the investigation.
I mostly enjoyed the development of Fortune’s character arc in this book. She’s been in town for a month at this point. And she’s developing feelings for people, beginning to hold them as dear friends. Having friends was something she had never dealt with before given her constant focus on mission opts. She’s also dealing with guilt for lying about her undercover situation, pretending to be Sandy-Sue, not informing people besides Ida Belle and Gertie – who figured out her skills far exceeded that of a librarian within the first few days of her arrival. So, she’s lying to Ally, who’s staying in her house. Worse yet, she has developed an attachment to Carter, beyond any feeling she’s had before for a man, and lying to him was not a good basis to begin a relationship upon.
Sinful and its residents had found a way to make me take a hard look at my past, my present, and my future.
As much as I enjoyed this developing relationship between Carter and Fortune, this book was not without its issues.
Swamp Team 3 was the weakest book I’ve read in this series so far. There were three factors that disappointed me: Ally’s character, decreased humor, and a ho-hum mystery plot. Ally has been fairly bland throughout the series, but fine as a side character with little page time. She was not the best character to form an entire mystery around. She’s prone to being saccharine , whining, and shrinking. Pair that with finding less to laugh out loud about in this story line, had me skimming a few pages - something I never done before with this series. And the mystery was less interesting than its predecessors and was resolved without a feeling of suspense (even when a situation occurred that should have felt that way). And the final connection to Ally felt contrived. However, that does not mean the book isn’t worth reading. For me, this book just dropped below the high mark set previously.
One thing did tickle me though…and if you've read any previous books you know what a big deal this was for Ida Belle...
Ida Belle said, “I sold the Corvette.” She shrugged. “It was a great car, but I didn’t find it exciting any more. It was time to try something new.” Wait until you find out what she replaced the corvette with! He-he. I think I would like to be Ida Belle when I grow up.
I am looking forward to my next installment about Fortune Redding in this series, Gator Bait.
I really do enjoy the Miss Fortune books, but as I've said in another review, the premise of her being undercover is really thin. I mean, an assassin hiding out in small town Louisiana, I can get on board with. But 4 murders in a supposedly sleepy town in the span of, what, like 3 weeks at this point, is way too much for me to take. As long as I space these out, I can tolerate that, but I'm hoping that Deleon drops the undercover act soon (at least to a point) so that she can give a decent reason why a sleepy, no-crime-in-living-memory town has suddenly turned into a murder and mayhem hub at the exact time her main character gets there.
But in the meantime, I'll enjoy the hell out of Fortune, Idabel, Gertie, Ally, and Carter's (again, forgive me on any name misspellings since these are audio listens for me) byplays as these books continue -- and try to continue not thinking about the paper-thin premise. At the very least, imagining Gertie throwing dollar bills at the TV while watching Magic Mike is pretty dang cute.
I just had the pleasure of reading Swamp Team 3 by Jana DeLeon and let me tell you, this book had me laughing from start to finish. Ida Bell and Gertie are up to their old tricks, and some new ones, and of course, Fortune is stuck right in the middle. There wasn't a single thing I would change about this story. It had the right amount of mystery, romance, and sassy humor. I can't wait for the next book in the series.
Hilarious, fun, spunky, and witty! A definite must read for anyone who loves a humorous mystery!
Reading this book for the third time I still loved it and laughed tears - especially at Gertie and some of the locals. It's so interesting to see where Fortune came from and her development as well as the development of her relationships within the series. I'm awed how much such a light hearted and entertaining book can show us as about relationships, dealing with our past and find a how to place in the word for oneself. I'm looking forward to continue re-reading the books published so far and even more to see what the author's comes up with in the future of my most favorite series.
The fifth installment in the Miss Fortune mysteries, Swamp Team 3 by Deleon, continues the hilarious exploits of CIA assassin Fortune Redding with her entourage of former spies Ida Belle and Gertie. Someone tries to set fire to Ally's house, so the intrepid trip band together to find the culprit. The investigation is complicated when Ally's next door neighbor is found murdered in her back yard shortly afterwards, and the FBI barge in to take over the homicide investigation. Much hilarity ensues as usual. Another 5 stars.
Swamp Team 3 by Jana Deleon is the 4th book in the Miss Fortune Mystery series. When her friend Ally's house is set on fire, Fortune and her crime fighting partners Ida Belle and Gertie set off to find the culprit. Another very entertaining and funny book in the series. As always, things are never smooth sailing giving us plenty of laughs along the way.
Undercover CIA agent Fortune Redding spent her first three weeks in Sinful, Louisiana dodging insults, makeup advice, guard dogs, bullets, and Deputy Carter LeBlanc, both professionally and personally. But just when she thinks things are going to settle down in the small bayou town, someone sets her friend Ally’s house on fire.
Has it really only been three weeks since Fortune arrived in Sinful, Louisiana? It feels like three years. Ok, that may be because I've been reading these for the last three years. That's one book a year, with the exception of year one when I read two of them. That should tell you how uncompelling (Is that a word?) this series is to me. I pick one up occasionally when I want something that will make me laugh. Unfortunately I always end up being disappointed. These books don't make me laugh nearly as much as I'm hoping they will, but yet I keep coming back for more. WHY? I wish I knew the answer to that question. My best guess is that these books are filling some home sickness that I have for Louisiana.
There were a couple of things I liked about this book, the little touch of romance, and the friendship between Fortune and Ally. Other than that I thought this was a bit lack luster. Nothing in the story made me really laugh at all, and there is usually one thing that does in these books. I also felt like there were too many things going on in this mystery. The addition of the stalker was just too much.
Now that I've read this fourth book in the series and it was the least humorous one of the bunch, I'm going to force myself to give up this series. I really don't need to waste my time on it any more. I would much rather spend that time on something that really makes me laugh. I'm going to try reading more of Molly Harper's books but if anyone has any suggestions I would love them!
It's rare lately that I find a book that just makes me happy. A good heart-warming story with lots of laughs and good warm happy feels. So imagine how happy I've been to spend my Christmas break with the eclectic crew of Fortune, Ida, Gertie, and the lovable law abiding Carter. It makes me want to hop in my car and go find these people in Sinful, Louisiana and join in on all the fun. Read this series, people. Especially if you are a fan of laughs, friends, and genuine happiness.
This is book 4 in this series and it was laugh-out-loud funny! I loved it. Gertie and Ida Belle are the best. How many guns DOES Gertie keep in her purse anyway?? Poor Carter... Someone should make a movie or TV show out of this series! It would be fantastic if casted properly.
These are just so fun to read. A CIA agent is assuming an alias to avoid assassination by a drug lord in a small Louisiana town on the bayou. Hooking up with two retired Vietnam spies, they madcap crime solving while keeping their true selves secret.
In this, we have a stalker, an arsonist, and a misogynist hothead to deal with. Add in a bobcat, a wet t-shirt contest and some off-road biking and the heat intensifies.
A LOL series that’s perfect for a lazy day escape.
The fourth book in the Miss Fortune Mystery series by Jana Deleon. Now starting her fourth week of being stuck in Sinful, LA, Fortune Redding is going on a date with Deputy Carter LeBlanc but that gets derailed when the call comes in that Ally's house is on fire. (Ally is the awesome baker we met in previous books.) Once again, Carter must insist that Fortune and her friends do not interfere in the investigation but, of course, that falls on deaf ears.
Although these books can be read as stand-alones, I recommend reading them in order. I think a person will appreciate them more that way. Anyway, another fun and delightful read.
Fourth in the series and not nearly as entertaining as the last three. There’s not much of a plot, just a tepid mystery that didn’t catch my attention. I love the dynamic between Fortune, Ida Mae and Gertie, but the ladies weren’t up to their usual standard of absurdity. Everything about this very short story was smaller.
There was a promise of romance between Fortune and the gorgeous Carter, but it was quickly sidetracked and ignored until the last sentence of the book. Disappointing.
If you’re planning to read the series you could probably skip this book and not notice.
This is book 4 in the Miss Fortune cozy mystery series.
This was such a quick read! This series has turned into such fun comfort reads. I love seeing the gang (Fortune, Ally, Gertie, Walter, Ida Belle and Carter). Can't wait to read book 5.
Swamp Team 3 by Jana Deleon was pure fun from start to finish. I love Fortune and with Ida Belle and Gertie by her side you know there will be total chaos and laughter. This time they are trying to protect Ally from an arsonist and a "creeper". Of course, there is more going on than there appears. Plenty of twists, only a few suspects and too many things that can go wrong and do. I'm already on the wait list at my library for the next one in this series.
1. Plot: CIA Assassin in witness protection and two old ladies with attitude solve crimes in their sleepy but explosive Louisiana town. In this one, the protagonists' friends house gets lit on fire and then there is a murder. Swamp Team three, the aforementioned old ladies + protagonist, investigate.
2. Listen. I know this is fluff and that it's not perfect. But consider- the god tier concept of two senior citizens who are agents of chaos and who has recruited an equally chaotic young woman to be their muscle. It's beautiful. There's a local Sherrifs Deputy who has been bald-face lied to SO MANY TIMES and each time is glorious.
3. I also just really like stories about outsiders in small towns? I mean, I have no idea how it actually is IRL but in fiction small towns in the Southern bits of the USA are very quirky and quirky is fun to read about.
4. I mean, don't get me wrong. I don't think this book will work for everyone, and not just because of the usual reasons of how much fluff you can tolerate. There are a lot of guns in here and a lot of gun-loving and I can suspend my disbelief because I'm in another country where it's hard to own one of these things, but the pervasive "oh this is normal" of it is a little concerning.
5. There's also the hot woman who does not know she is hot and is effortlessly hot in a girlie way while internally claiming she knows nothing about all these girlie things. It's more prevalent in some books than others, and I think we may see more of it in the future because the romance is gaining steam.
6. I don't actually dislike the romance, I think the two characters both have a sense of humor and they are entertaining when they get together. I'm a little put out by how the series tries So Hard to make sure that the love interest is on Fortune's level when it comes to badassery, to the extent of him having served in the Marine Corps and all that. Which, really. It was unnecessary.
7. I love all the women in this series. Effortless hotness aside, Fortune is an deeply weird and very entertaining. The old ladies are even better. The only scenes with Ida Belle and Gertie that are not great are the ones where they (founders of a club defined by their non-attachment to marriage) make googly eyes at Fortune's dates with the love interest. It makes sense for Ally the sweet girl next door bff, but it makes no sense for the rest of Swamp Team 3.
8. Anyway, it was fun to read. I foresee plot and character problems brought about by the pushing of the romance to the foreground in the future but eh. I'm not there yet.
I might need a support group. I cannot stop reading/listening to this series. I just finished my fourth book in just about as many days and I don't see myself stopping any time soon. I feel like I should pace myself though because what happens when I've finished them all?
Swamp Team 3 is book 4 in the Miss Fortune Mystery series. I feel like this title would have been so much more appropriate for the third book in the series but that's neither here nor there.
In this book, Fortune, Gertie, and Ida Belle have a tough mystery to figure out because the clues just aren't lining up the way they should. Someone tried to burn Ally's house down, there is a creeper/stalker, and even a murder; but how do they all tie together? With Fortune's feelings for Carter deepening, she is feeling more and more guilty for lying to him, ignoring his demands for her to stay out of police matters, and stepping on his toes and creating additional work for him. But ultimately all bets are off when it comes to making sure Ally is safe.
I figured out who the creeper was pretty early on so it was a bit frustrating that it took the girls and Carter so long to realize it but otherwise the mystery and who-dun-it was super fun to watch them solve.
This has been a great cozy mystery series so far and I recommend it. I am rating this book, Swamp Team 3, 4-4.5 stars. I'm only knocking it down to the 4 stars because I am starting to rate the books in the series against each other and this one wasn't as incredible as book 2, which is my favorite so far, and not quite as good as book 3. If you like your books with a nice dose of humor, this is the series for you. I have found myself laughing out loud too many times to count.
As far as the narration goes, this is the same narrator as the first 3 books so that makes me happy. It looks like she narrates the whole series which is great for continuity and listening to each book back to back. I have been really happy with this narrator but I noticed some of her voices slipping in this book. There were several times where Carter, Ida Belle, and Walter all had exactly the same voice. Other than that, the narration was pretty good.
I am so glad I was alone when I started this book. I laughed so hard in some places that I lost my breath and had tears running down my checks. I had to put the book down to get myself under control. Everytime today when I think about the scenes I start laughing all over again. this is a fun mystery that could only happen to Fortune and her friends in Sin, LA.
This is part of a series of books. you do not need to read the first 2 to enjoy this one, but it helps with the back story of these 3 ladies. the first 2 books are just as much fun to read.
This young crow and 2 old crows bring a new level of what trouble they can get into.
I am sure looking forward to the next book from Jana.
An arsonist is loose in Sinful, Louisiana, causing Swamp Team 3 to mobilize in order catch the criminal. In Jana DeLeon's fourth novel in the Miss Fortune series, Fortune is just starting out on her highly anticipated "not-a-date" with Deputy Carter when he gets summoned back to town because of a house fire. Allie, Fortune's only female friend her age, is left temporarily homeless by a deliberately-set fire. This gives Fortune the opportunity to host Allie in order to protect her from the arsonist and a creeper who has been coming around, whether he be the arsonist or someone else.

After hearing others raving about this series, I decided to give it another try. However, I just can’t get over the silliness of the characters and situations, and Fortune’s complete ineptitude—especially since she was previously an assassin! I just don’t buy it, and can’t continue the series.
Fortune has only been undercover and in hiding for 3 weeks in Sinful, Louisiana and she has already seen her fair share of bodies and had numerous attempts on her life. When someone tries to burn down her friend, Allie's house Fortune, Ida Belle and Gertie are on the case. That is until Carter tells her in no uncertain terms to stay out of police business or risk finding herself in the big house. Fortune agrees to stay away from investigating but Ida Belle and Gertie don't. When the FBI show up and take over the investigation Fortune justifies that she isn't getting involved in Carter's investigation, but in that of the FBI. As usual she finds herself in quite a mess, this time involving a chicken riding a motorcycle and winning "Best Boobs" at the Swamp Bar's wet t-shirt contest. Another great one in the series.
