Good story, but logos and pathos got a bit confusing
The good; sex scenes, quality of editing and prose, and the bones of the story. What could use some work; character development, clarity on the conflict, motivation behind the resolution. More on those things: The characters were well presented, but the development wasn't there, so their motivations for doing the things that created the conflict didn't really make much sense, and the pathos of Mia's family or Harper's past poor judgement aren't tapped into effectively. Mia getting lost in her fame and partying didn't seem something the character I was introduced to would do, and I was never provided with a reason behind her suddenly ditching Harper at a show then ghosting her for a whole week and completely ignoring her, totally out of the blue. Meanwhile, Harper was presented as impulsive and emotion driven, so it didn't fully track with the character I was introduced to that Harper's response of backing off seemed mature and reasonable, as well as her professional reaction of over booking Mia to leave her less time for partying and possibly losing everything because of it. But, despite their motivations being inconsistent with what little character development there was, Harper's method worked, it snapped Mia out of it, and then she checked in at the right time, found out Mia was ready for a more relaxed schedule, chilled things out, but kept a professional distance. As a result Mia got her s**t together and found a good balance. So Harper having to be the one to reach out and apologize then make a grand gesture seemed really backwards. Mia was the one who ended things - I don't know about y'all but when a girl ditches me for a party then ignores my check in texts and goes no contact for a week with me, I view that as an inconsiderate but very overt break up.
If I were developmental editing, I'd suggest building a stronger reader understanding of the characters by adding a pure character development chapter for each in the beginning so we understand more fully who these people are and why they're the way they are, which helps us sympathise with what they do later on. The bulk of the story has Mia being emotion and impulse driven, with Harper being the more logic and reason driven one, so I'd suggesting editing the early chapters to express that. Then I'd suggest Mia be the one to try to make amends first once she finds a balance in her life and demonstrates why she won't ghost Harper again. Let Harper be moved, tempted, and understanding but take some time to think about it, create that tension and longing, then Harper can do the grand gesture she does and they can get their HEA.
This is an opportunity to develop the sexual element of the story as well, there's a Dom/sub dynamic already being toyed with. People keep tossing that stuff in for steam factor without it affecting the story or characters any other way, which is fine, totally, but it's a missed opportunity when it can support the story I'm so many ways. If these thing were addressed, the existing sex scenes would work so much better and feel more organic. And the potential for an extra scene or two as the characters encounter each other during key points would be created. As it is, they're super steamy and well done, but I noticed that from a technical standpoint, not because I felt engaged in them, since I didn't have that strong connection with the characters and their motivations. The beginning felt rushed and forced, like the author started in one direction, then went another and never went back to fix the front end, and the rest would have flowed better if that was addressed. Still, overall, there was a lot to enjoy here, so I still feel it's worth reading, and I'll probably try out another by this author. Oh! I loved the multicultural aspects here. Extra points for diversity and representation for sure.
3.5ish- only bc it was like reading through a draft at times, the thoughts & actions were all over the place, I don't quite understand how the "love" developed when they were apart for almost the whole book and they didn't seem to connect on anything substantial so it was just flat on chemistry. It needs to be fleshed out, I love the plot premise but it just lacked any depth.
4 stars. Really good! I loved the romance in this between Mia and Harper. There was so much miscommunication between them but it worked for me here. I thought both characters were extremely likable and they had great chemistry from the start. The spice was fantastic in this. I'm not all that into romances with musicians but this one was done well and I enjoyed the business side of the music industry. I cannot wait for book two.
This was an easy quick read but I think that some of the character development was missing- you never felt like you got to know them. I think that since this is intended to be a series, there is additional opportunities to build out Mia, Harper, and the supporting characters, but it was missing from the first book. The spice was good, narrator was clear and consistent and this was a brief, four hour read.
Creative genius❗the one part that stood out for me was the fact that you wrote in a bit of the words of the song. Plus the part where Mia mentioned the lyrics she had been working on previously; and she sits down and puts words to those lyrics. What a attentive writer you are. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟❗
This is a wonderful start to the series,Mia and Harper are made for each other Mia's captivating voice enchantes the huntress from the first note.Enjoy this lovely story and be ready for more.
What a great start to a series! I enjoyed meeting Mia and Harper the main characters of Sing for Her. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.
Mia Cortés, a rising musician, is discovered by the influential music agent Harper Nightingale. As Mia's career takes off, their professional relationship sparks a romance. However, the pressures of fame and blurred boundaries strain their love.
Mia's from Spain, and both her mother and grandmother were flamenco dancers and part of the gypsy community. This book taught me that flamenco dancers were exclusively men, and only later in history were women allowed to dance the basic steps. Mia's strength and motivation is her family and she works hard to break into the music industry. Harper meets Mia by chance during one of the nights she's performing, and she immediately becomes infatuated with her confidence and captivated by her beautiful voice.
Harper plays an important part in Mia's life as she wants to help her succeed and falls in love with her while getting her career off the ground.
I love how sincere Harper is about her intentions with Mia. Harper is everything Mia needs to make it big in music, life, and love. This novella is level 3 spicy, has less than 300 pages, and is an entertaining read!
