Jake’s life is not an easy one; he knew he was lucky to be alive. Faith had always been afraid of monsters, but her father’s words vanquished them with words of love and angels.

Their lives were separate and vastly different and yet something was pulling them closer together.

Then tragedy struck and Faith’s life took a massive swerve. While Jake pondered on what would happen next in his troubled existence.

This story is rooted in truth, although, through dramatic licence, takes a leap into the unknown.

This is a mixed genre tale: romance, drama, crime thriller, with a touch of fantasy.

Warning: contains some strong language and violent scenes.

As I started reading, I was captivated by the story of Jake, who was living a difficult life with uncaring parents. I found the quality of the writing to be exceptional and the author really does a great job of showing the world through the eyes of Jake with very age appropriate dialogue. We then meet Faith and despite their young ages it is evident there is something special about their relationship.
The story follows the lives of the two youngsters into adulthood and I suppose I would describe this book as a romance but life has many challenges in store for the couple. You will want to keep turning the pages to discover how their story will end.

I’ve always enjoyed Julie Elizabeth Powell’s books; they’re always imaginative and original. “Changing Angels” is no exception. It starts off following the lives of two children, Faith and Jake. They do not know each other, but are connected somehow, in an unexplained way. The novel's chapters alternate between Jake’s story and Faith’s story.

As the main characters are both children at the start of the novel, I was wondering for a while whether this was a story written for children. However, the author was only setting out the background to what becomes a crime thriller, with some disturbing scenes.

Jake and Faith's first encounter is when Faith is still a child, on a bus, and Jake sees her from the street. They both treasure that memory as something significant, although they do not know why.

The two meet a few years later, and both instantly recognise each other as if they’d met before. They talk to each other as if they are old friends. At this point I wondered whether the tale would be a fantasy tale.

Jake and Faith feel a connection as if they have known each other all their lives, although they both come from quite different backgrounds.

The story takes a dramatic turn when the couple plan to meet for a romantic day out but Faith doesn’t turn up. What ensues is both unexpected and tragic. This leads to the second half of the novel, which is much more fast-paced.

"Changing Angels" is probably the author’s best work to date. It’s complex and contains many characters, who all seem like real people, all having very distinct personalities. One thing this author does very well is that she writes novels and stories that contain multiple characters and every character is always memorable in some way.

“Changing Angels” explores the idea of a sixth sense, guardian angels, soulmates, and other such matters. These concepts lay the foundation for the fantasy side of the novel. This lighter more romantic side is balanced by the story of a criminal gang and how that darker side of life becomes part of Faith and Jake's reality.

The book is engaging and thought-provoking. It will make you question what is real and what is imagined. It makes you think about whether certain things are predestined, and how everything is connected. It’s an imaginative tale with a deeper meaning.

To sum up, “Changing Angels” is an entertaining thriller with believable characters and a fantasy theme. Well worth reading.

Changing Angels has all the elements of a great novel - intriguing story and multidimensional characters. Moreover, it stays true to life with its light and dark side, with its happiness and sadness, with its destruction yet so much love… It eloquently swims in the ocean of our crazy world, of destinies that are hard to rationalize, and human choices that are hard to understand at times. Though at times heartbreaking, this story is meant to give us hope in the end. Jake and Faith are both wonderful characters probably because, as the author says, they are based on her past. I think all readers who are looking for a real-life inspired, true to heart novel should give this book a chance.

Changing Angels from Julie Elizabeth Powell was a warm, romantic, change of pace for me. I found the story of two star-crossed lovers who somehow just missed each other quite touching.
Jake came from an abusive home where he was treated like garbage by both his parents and even his older siblings. He left home to escape from the pain as soon as he was able and although he flirted around the edges of the law, he always had a strong moral compass that kept him roughly on the straight and narrow and at least out of serious trouble. A chance encounter with a young girl on a bus would leave Jake and the girl, Faith, with the belief there was something destined for them both, together.
Faith's life was thrown into disarray when her beloved father died and her mother remarried a wealthy businessman, which gave them the security they needed but it also gave faith a step-brother she could well do without. Faith knew Lawrence was evil and had designs on much more than brotherly love, so was relieved when her mother sent her away to boarding school.
Jake and Faith briefly reconnect while she is at boarding school but when Faith mysteriously disappears one day, they are again torn apart. Despite the years that pass, Jake always believes he will find Faith again but will it all be too late for the lovers?
This was an enjoyable and satisfying read. I've been a fan of Julie Elizabeth Powell for some time and this was the first non-fantasy book of hers I'd read. In some ways it reminded me of the emotions and angst in one of my own books and I certainly identified with that.
If you like a good, solid, story-line with real, strong characters both male and female, I'm sure you'll love this and if you're a hopeless romantic, like me, I know you will. An excellent read and one I can highly recommend.

They say that "every" relationship is unique - no two ever the same. That certainly holds true for Faith and Jake, both survivors of hardscrabble childhoods, as they accompany each other through some challenging and desperate times. Written with sensitive, deep and first-hand emotion, the author creates on paper some visceral responses from the reader for her well-developed characters and their experiences throughout this intriguing and provocative tale. Being a New Ager, I found the story notably timely as it bumps up against so many of the things that still go on in the crazy world we live in today. Destinies, choices, violence and hope, light versus dark all make CHANGING ANGELS a novel you may want to try. And that title? It is a WINNER.

Changing Angels is a tale of two people, Jake and Faith, who come from very different backgrounds but were destined to be together. When Faith becomes the victim of a violent attack (one that is part of a sick ring of criminals), she flees for her own safety. As the decades pass, Jake and Faith attempt to separately go on with their lives, but they still feel connected to one another.

To avoid giving away too much, I’ll stop there. Suffice it to say, the book held my interest throughout. It’s an unusual mix of philosophy, romance, cringeworthy violence, and action. In a few places I thought the characters philosophized just a little too much, but overall, I liked what they said. My biggest complaint was that the book needs a copyedit for punctuation, missing words, and the like. It didn’t stop me from enjoying the story, though, which is a testament to how good it is.

Intriguing Romantic Fantasy Story

'Changing Angels' by Julie Elizabeth Powell is a delightful romantic fantasy story, told from Faith & Jake's point of view.

When Faith's father passes away & her mum remarries she is persistently plagued and brutalised by a 'monster'. - Sorely testing her faith in guardian angels.

Jake, meanwhile, is skeptical that angels even exist. - But has to admit to himself that he has an uncanny knack, or sixth-sense, of being in the right place at the right time, without really knowing why.

Highly recommended reading for fans of romance, fantasy & intriguing fictional stories.

“Changing Angels” was both tragic and inspiring, romantic and devastating. From page one I couldn’t help but sympathize with the two central characters, Faith and Jake, whose paths in life seemed to have crossed for a reason. Neither had it easy in their childhood: Jake grew up in an abusive household full of neglected children and a real bastard for a father while Faith lost her dad as a young girl and was now cornered into choosing between her mother’s personal happiness with a new husband and avoiding the unwanted attention of her new “brother.” Faith’s later story was incredibly devastating and difficult to read about at times; however, the ending really made up for all the hardships she had to face along with Jake on their path to mutual happiness. What I appreciated the most about this story is not only the beautiful prose and relatable characters but also the important issues it brings to light: human trafficking, child abuse and sexual abuse in the family. It’s an important read for sure, which I would highly recommend to everyone.

Changing Angels by Julie Elizabeth Powell

The story revolves around Faith and Jake. Starting off when they were young up to adulthood. They had an encounter in their youth and are reconnected as adults. Their friendship blooms into a romance until a tragic event happens. Truth will be discovered, destiny is real, Faith and Jake are about to find out in Changing Angels.

A fast paced original story with attention to detail and engaging dialogue. Told in alternating voices from Faith and Jake. This (really) brought me into their world, seeing things through their eyes and feeling all of their emotions. Thought-proving emotional journey with, romance, thrills and a touch of fantasy, Changing Angels had all the "feels" I highly recommend to adult readers.

Thought-proving emotional journey

This is an intriguing mixed bag with romance, drama, fantasy, and a thriller with some strong language and violent scenes. I was pleasantly surprised that it all combines well to produce a superb story. After Faith’s father dies and her mother finds a new man, Faith’s life takes a dramatic turn. Well written with believable characters, the story explores belief and trust in guardian angels. Wondering how the story with its heart-wrenching moments would end for Faith and Jake kept me turning the pages. Highly Recommended.

A fast-paced story straddling genres, Changing Angels is quite out of the ordinary and a story that kept me engaged to the very last page. The writing style was unobtrusive, characters multi-dimensional and each with unique voices, while there were scenes of action and tension too. I recommend Changing Angels very much.
