I have a wolf in my head. Her name is Esme, and she likes killing things.
I’m Lucy, a regular accountant turned alpha werewolf. A tryst with the wrong incubus ripped me from my ordinary life and sent me tumbling into a magical realm that I'd never even dreamed existed.
I was just adjusting to pack life when I was asked to mercy-kill the current alpha. I'm not a total bitch so I did what he asked, but it's left me as alpha of a pack I don't know, full of werewolves who resent that I still live and breathe while their old alpha doesn't. If I’m to survive in this dog-eat-dog realm, I’m going to have to win my new pack over – and fast.
I'm still trying to find my way in this violent new world when my third in command, Mark, is brutally murdered right under my damn nose. To regain control of the pack, I need to find the killer and bring him to vigilante justice. Luckily, my wolf, Esme, is more than happy to get her paws dirty.
When the werewolf council show up to question me, things get a little dicey. Thank goodness I have the deadly Greg Manners, former dragon brethren and general ass-kicker, to back me up. Now I just need to unravel who'd want to kill Mark – and there’s a really long list of suspects because he was shadier than an oak tree.
I'm hip-deep in suspects, and I need to move swiftly – before the killer strikes again...
I didn't rate this book because I barely even got through the first chapter when I knew that this wasn't the book for me. Somebody else who has read it says you probably need to read another series to get the world building and understand better but a good book shouldn't need another series for it to make sense. A series should make sense on its own. Also I started reading and felt like I missed a whole book. Apparently the majority of her background and what happened to her is actually in the prequel to this. The majority of the blurb to this book doesn't even happen in this book, it all takes place before and that really threw me off. I thought we were going to be going into that in this story.
Last but certainly not least- the MC. The heroine is not someone I'm interested in in following her story and just reading these parts explained to me a lot of who she is and why I wouldn't like her lol (straight from chapter 1 and 2)
"I calmly finished undressing. I’ve never been body conscious because I’m the girl you love to hate. Willowy and model-like, I am blessed with modest curves and a toned tummy."
"I was popular at school, which made me supremely unpopular with a section of the not-so-popular girls. I did my best to rise above it all. It wasn’t my fault that I was athletic, clever, beautiful and could sing, and I wasn’t dumbing down to make anyone else feel better. I never made fun of others, but neither did I demean myself. My mum taught me to take pride in my successes, just like I was a man."
I cannot continue, this series is not for me.
**Update! I just realized I read the other series and I can't believe they are by the same author!! I loved the other realm series so much and to read the first couple of chapters and realize it's the same author I'm flabbergasted! I didn't think this is the same character from the other books, she's so much more dislikeable in this.....how unfortunate!**
Obviously I am really enjoying Ms. Harris’ work! I have flown through Jinx’s series in a matter of days and am now diving into Lucy’s take-off series with relish! I don’t think one has to have read the previous series to enjoy this book but I would highly recommend it - mostly because it is just so much fun and gives a lot of background that will add depth to this story (as well as getting to see previous characters). If you have read the Other Realm series, you will pretty much know how things work, as well.
In this book, Lucy is not only new to the wolf world but is suddenly the alpha over a very reticent pack. She was an accountant beforehand and a “people pleaser” by nature. That personality does NOT blend well with her situation now, though! Oh, it is fun to watch how she grows into her position. I do wish she would have been more forceful at times and was frustrated when she let people get away with things that everyone knows shouldn’t be. But, she slowly learns and grows, and her kindness is one of the things that makes this book so enjoyable, so…. Can’t wait to see how it all washes out in the next books!
Wow! Another great story from Heather G. Harris! Not only did she smash it with her Glimmer of the Other series, but she’s going to do it again with this spinoff series following Jinx’s best mate, Lucy.
If you haven’t read Glimmer of the Other, which follows Jinx, the private eye who can hear a lie, you're missing out, but you don’t need to if this is your first taste of the Other Realm. Lucy became a werewolf in that series through necessity, but no spoilers here!
Lucy was made alpha of a sizable pack almost as soon as she was made a werewolf, which has caused her some grief, and dissension in her pack. Just as soon as she solves one issue, ten arise. To make matters worse, her third, the previous second to the dead alpha is murdered inside the pack house. If she doesn’t find out what’s really going on, not only is her pack in danger, she may not live to solve her other issues.
Luckily, Lucy has determination, a great wardrobe, and lots of useful friends and allies to help her along the way. Plus, she may have other skills besides just being a werewolf, and that may be the biggest help of all!
If you like top notch urban fantasy, fast paced and unique, then you can’t go wrong with Protection of the Pack in the Other Wolf Series. I highly recommend this new series—great entertainment, storytelling, worldbuilding, and just plain fun. Don't miss out on this one!
This was the first book I read of this author, and maybe it’s my fault but since it said it was book 1, I thought I was starting at the beginning of the story. I was not. I was confused and it felt like I was in the middle and had a hard time following the story because of it.
I won a giveaway on Goodreads from the publisher so thank you for that.
I am not surprised but I am a bit disappointed that this series is also set in the Other Realm world. The world is very complex but shallow. The author focuses on quantity over quality which results in a lot of details that don't hold up to closer scrutiny. The implicit excuse is always that it's culture and tradition and whatnot and to be fair that is a reasonable explanation for a lot of it. The book even makes fun of all the strange cultural and linguistic quirks we humans have. But the problem is that these strange and arbitrary rules and cultural norms among all the different supernatural races are the only things that define most of them. Instead of a few quirky, arbitrary details, this world appears to be an overwhelming maze of random rules, a few of which conveniently facilitate the plot. They don't interconnect throughout this society. There are no deeper complex interactions between these cultures. There just is no depth to it. I don't know how else to express it. I never really felt like this otherworld and the many different societies in it are real. They are all like movie extras, only there to fill the background. I already had the same problem with The Other Realm, the first series in this world, but because I am already somewhat familiar with it now, it becomes even more obvious how little actual depth there is behind all the shallow details.
But that aside, my biggest problem was the MC. She is this modern evolution of the Mary Sue type. Capable, independent, strong, very attractive, universally liked, with lots of powerful friends, and sure in her own sexuality. In short, she is perfect. Not in the YA utterly boring Mary Sue kind of way but in a more modern and badass way. I usually like this type of character if she is authentic, but as with the Mary Sue trope, it's overdone and unbelievable in this case. And an even bigger problem at least for me is how shallow she is as a person. She is constantly preoccupied with her own looks and sex appeal and with low-key judging other people's appearance. There is a fine line between confidence and arrogance and this character regularly crosses it. Arrogance can be a very interesting flaw but the problem is that the book doesn't recognize the arrogance of its MC. It is treated as if it's all her due. It's this chick-lit attitude but in a Jacky-Leon-inspired world. I just couldn't stand her as a character, primarily because her flaws are not intentional and are never acknowledged by the narrative. The MC of The Other Realm is kind of the same type but it's less grating there because it's not as in-your-face obvious.
I think you could read this book without having read the first series but a lot of the uninspired world-building is skipped over and only the most important details get explained properly again so I would say you probably miss out on parts of the story if you haven't read the first series. I almost wanted to write "miss out on the nuance" but there really isn't a lot of nuance. Just a lot of arbitrary rules you just have to know to understand the simple reasoning of various characters fully.
I believe it's a mistake that many authors these days choose to write multiple series set in the same universe. Sure, this approach can work out brilliantly and be hugely successful if the universe is well-crafted and can stand on its own without leaning on the main series. Unfortunately, most attempts, like this one, fall short and would need extensive retconning to be properly fixed. In my view, a single flawed entry that the author refuses to retcon can have a domino effect, tainting the entire world. By continuously writing in these interconnected worlds, authors are essentially carrying their past mistakes with them from one series to another. These flaws accumulate, and each new series in the world risks inheriting them by default.
Still pretty fun and in-line with the Glimmer books! I loved getting to know Lucy from her own perspective and what she was going through. Harris continued to do a wonderful job at giving each character a very unique voice and that was so evident here. The pack dynamics/conflicts were also great and it was soooo damn satisfying to read about Lucy finding her place among them.
I received an ARC version of this book and was delighted by it. It is an offshoot story from the author’s Glimmer of the Others series, but it works as a standalone novel if you haven’t read the Glimmer series (If you haven’t, you should, as those are also phenomenal!). This book centers on Lucy, the newly turned werewolf that unexpectedly became Alpha of her pack. You get to meet Lucy’s wolf Esme and Lucy’s second, Greg Manners. The developing friendship (and hints of a potential future relationship) between them already has me eager for the next book in this trilogy.
Lucy and Manners have to deal with the murder of the pack’s third, Mark. Mark was not a good person and the pack is better off without him, but Lucy needs to find out who killed him and avenge him. Otherwise she risks crippling herself and the pack as an ineffective alpha (if she lives that long).
I really enjoyed Lucy and Esme taking control of their pack and meeting the different members of the pack. I loved the humor throughout this book. My favorite scene had to be when she is discussing hypothetical blackmail with her mom.
Heather G Harris’ writing style is excellent. She is a British author and is not afraid to sprinkle Britishisms throughout the book, which I enjoyed. I’m sure, to her, it is just her normal writing. I highly recommend this book!
I appreciated this book for its simple straightforward storyline. Just what I wanted: very low angst, audiobook format, interesting enough mystery with some light hearted parts, etc.
This is a continuation of the other realm series. You don't necessarily need to read that series first, but it provides all the world building and a lot of context for the story.
It's another Lucy story! Between being the new Alpha, the werewolf council showing up and creating havoc, and of course someone has been un-alive'd. This was a fun, action packed story that left me wanting more Lucy!
It’s not that I don’t like the Other series peeling off to a secondary series within the same world, it can work to do this and seems to be popular in urban fantasy series. My problem is not even making Lucy the main character of her own spinoff. My problem is making her an alpha of a werewolf pack AND killing off a wonderful side character from the original series. While Jess always knew she was different due to her ability to know when people are lying, Lucy has not. Lucy has been in the Common her entire life, with no hint of any sort of abilities that might indicate she would belong in the Other, and she just waltzes in and assumes this alpha werewolf role? After mere weeks of being a werewolf? Sigh. Wilf was such a lovely character in the original series, I’m too upset that he is just gone *poof* from the entire series. Why not keep him around and make Lucy the 2nd and still have Manners there? Or make her take over the other pack and work WITH Wilf to unite the species? I don’t know, I just didn’t like that Wilf was so pivotal in Jinx finally uncovering the Other realm and her place in it, he essentially made sure she had clients for a business she started at 18, he orchestrated being drunk and gambling away artifacts to try to get her to stumble upon her truth. Of all the side characters (and there are a lot), I feel like he is the one who most deserved to stay.
With that out of the way, I do like Lucy, I like Manners, but I found the majority of this book confusing af. Bastion is here and plays a pretty pivotal role which didn’t make a lot of sense. He is on team Jess, and while I guess I sort of buy he watched Lucy grow up right along with Jess, it doesn’t make sense. (Side note: i don’t get the moral code around Bastion’s mercenary role in this world yet I’m supposed to really like him). Furthermore, it sure seems like Bastion is all over the place doing all of these kill for hire jobs, yet he is ready on a dime for Jess and now Lucy. And the last bewildering aspect of Bastion is that he apparently has been working with the Brethren. I had to go back to the last book to understand why Manners is calling Bastion Sam. Just too many characters to have all these different names and keep them all straight!! On top of trying to figure out this world!
Moving on, I don’t get how the Brethren are able to waltz in and install the security system at the werewolf mansion, unless they are known as the security detail for all of the other. Maybe I missed that somewhere in the first 4 of the Other series, I can’t believe the pack is okay with it. I’m also tiring of Jess and now Lucy being all unique in their powers, to the point of saying repeatedly that the extras they have should be kept secret. Yet, they tell everyone.
I’m not buying Lord Samuel had this big of a pack of assholes, he was supposedly beloved by them all? These people are ridiculous. I don’t like the stereotypes we’re bombarded with, the blushing, and the internal dialog with Lucy seems to be a bit more on the extraneous unless she’s speaking to her wolf. I need to understand this universe and hearing Lucy repeat how hot she is, how much being that hot is a burden, or how hot Manners is, I need a story.
I’m going to keep going to see how this goes but I feel like the series is treading on this ice on whether I keep going.

I was lucky enough to get an ARC for this book after some heavy duty fangirling at the author because I loved her The Other Realm series so much. In a time where the fashion in fantasy leans towards dark gritty and angsty, my soul was craving a charming, feel-good read with a strong alpha female.
This book delivers in spades. The mystery is gripping, the characters are well-rounded, the romantic tension is titillating, and the banter between Lucy and her wolf Esme is laugh-out-loud funny.
There's not many books written where you can honestly say each character deserves their own spin-off, but this universe, in my opinion, could keep going forever. Bravo, and keep them coming!
An offshoot of the Other Realm universe that I was lucky enough to get an ARC version of, Heather has given us another personality to get to know and to root for, as well as plenty of new reasons to sit on the edge of our seats. While her muses are busy putting together some more of Jinx and Emory for us to enjoy, we get to read about the adventures of her best friend following her death-defying experiences after nearly dying at the hands of an incubus, being turned into a werewolf and becoming the Alpha! Woot! I look forward to finding out what awaits Lucy now that she’s solved her first mystery. Cheers!
I didn't like the main character, Lucy, although her wolf Esme was awesome. She didn't do anything on her own the entire book. At the end she wanted the vampire or griffin to kill the two bad guys. When she had to do it she wanted to let the killer escape because "maybe she learned her lesson." What happened to proving herself capable of protecting the pack? I had very little respect for her as an alpha.
Also, the end didn't make sense. She was going to find her birth parents and teach them what a mistake they made giving her up. It sounded like a threat and it really stepped up her angst from what was portrayed in the rest of the book.
This was a fun start to the spin-off of Lucy's story. She's a great character - smart, tough, determined. She's in a shitty spot in the pack, but the pack seems to mostly be decent people and it isn't unfair that they don't think highly of her at first ... the circumstances of her becoming alpha were tough to swallow. They come around, though, because Lucy is exactly what she seems - compassionate, fair, clever, quite frankly exactly what you'd hope to have in a pack leader.
She and Greg seem like a great pair, and I am excited to see that unfold too!
To think I was hesitant to read this because I thought no one could match Jinx? I didn't warm to Lucy quite as quickly; it got a bit annoying being told how great she is. But I think this story is going to stand out on its own. I absolutely love the relationship between Lucy and her wolf! It's so funny.
This book exceeded my expectations and is a pretty decent read. I recommend adding it to your reading list. I'm starting to really like this author. :) FYI You gotta read "Glimmer of the Other" and it's book series first.
I really liked this series! I have listened to all of Jess' story and this one with Lucy has been really enjoyable. Each book has a worthy adventure and Lucy has proved herself as Queen. I particularly enjoyed the death of Alpha Rain! 😂 Next is the witchy books!
Lucy is a “made” werewolf and a new alpha. She’s trying to prove herself to the pack when one is murdered. The book follows the search for the murderer, her growing alpha abilities and power over the pack. This book has magic, witches, gargoyles, druids, griffins, unicorns, vampyrs and of course werewolves. This is an enjoyable, quick, easy read of a series that fits in between the Others book 3 and 4. This reading order is per Heather G Harris who is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors.
So even though this is the first book in this series it is like #5 in the reading order of The Other Realm Universe. I was actually trying to avoid reading this series I just wanted to finish Jinx's Other Realm Series in which the main heroine in this series is a feature in as Jinx's best friend . The author does warn at the end of The Other Realm Series book #5 that you should read this book next to keep up with the story line but I thought I'd try and wing my way through so I started to read Betrayal of the Court (book #6) in Jinx's series and lets just say I got through the first two pages and man was I so lost so here I am.
So even though I was trying to avoid this series I did like it. It didn't draw me in as Jinx's series has but it is off to a good start and I really want to see how Lucy and Greg's relationsip progresses. This series of course has a lot of cross over characters from Jinx's series which I did like because it was like visiting with friends so that was a plus. However, Jinx is a PI so there always seems to be a case she's solving whereas Lucy is the new alpha of the wolf clan and though it was entertaining I liked beening along for the ride in solving a case than I did with pack politics and Lucy trying to find her way as alpha. Though I did really enjoy her getting revenge of a certain incubus that almost caused her death and definitely was the reason why she had to be turned into a werewolf in the first place (the last two things happened in Jinx's series). I am definitely going to stick with the series but as of right now I'm really only invested so that when I get back to Jinx's series which is after book #3 in this series that I will know what is going on we will have to see if the next two books pick up a bit or if I'll only read the ones I need to in order to follow along in Jinx's series.
I really enjoyed revisiting the world of the others, this time through Lucy's eyes. Lucy was just settling into her life as a newly turned werewolf when she suddenly finds herself in the position of pack Alpha and not everyone is happy about the change. Luckily she has her wolf Esme (who is a separate entity to Lucy) and her second Greg Manners to help her navigate the mysteries of Pack politics and watch her back.
But no sooner than demonstrating to the Pack that she is not a pushover by meting out some harsh but well deserved punishment to her ex who is responsible for almost killing her and necessitating her wolfy transformation one of the Pack (who has been most vocal about not wanting as Alpha) is murdered in the Pack house and Lucy has to find the killer or say good-bye to ever gaining the respect and support of her Pack.
The story flows well with plenty of action, humour, character interaction and a carnivorous unicorn. What more could you want? Lucy is a very likeable heroine and I love how she has embraced her new life as a werewolf and is doing her best to fill the sudden and unwanted elevation to alpha. But as much as I like Lucy, her wolf Esme steals the show. A quirk of Lucy's magic/transformation means Lucy & Esme can communicate and their conversations are the absolute highlight - so entertaining. I can't wait to see what happens next.
A word of advice tho - don't start if you have to get up early the next day as you might have trouble putting it down. Save til the weekend like I did.
"I was popular at school, which made me supremely unpopular with a section of the not-so-popular girls. I did my best to rise above it all. It wasn’t my fault that I was athletic, clever, beautiful and could sing" yeah honey I hated you about then too. Lucy was not only a bit too up herself for me to like her, but she was a bit too special snowflake. Paranormal books do tend to revolve around special snowflakes, that's fine, I love a special snowflake, but Lucy just keeps adding to her tally of "things that are so special about me" and that can get old. I couldn't really buy into Lucy's wolf knowing so much about being a werewolf, when she only came into being when Lucy became a werewolf. I think it would be of benefit to have read the series that comes before this one, and I saw one reviewer say that that series is better, so I might give it a go, but otherwise I'm not invested enough to continue, even though they are in Kindle Unlimited. My pick for when Lucy tracks down her parents is that one is a Dryad and the other a piper. Kinda obvious, but I could be wrong
I gave this a 50 page shot but I just can't get into it. You're dropped into what feels like book 2 or 200 pages into a book. I literally exited the book and checked to see if it was book 1 twice. It says it is but it doesn't reD like one. The first 50 pages are all info dump but it a way that implies you know this info (maybe from another series?)
The writing itself isn't bad, the mc is unapologetic and that's kinda refreshing. The plot itself was even intriguing. It's jsut that I spent 50 pages going "what? Did I miss something are we going to like have a flashback soon so I have context?".
Mhm, perhaps due to already knowing most of the world building by having read The Other Realm series, this ended up a boring read. I was not particular impressed by Lucy, as she mostly gets by by relying on powerful friends that she has thanks to Jinx (the previous protagonist) and her OP piper/werewolf combo powers - which she also has thanks to Jinx. It doesn't help that the loyalty of her bodyguard (and presumably the LI) is also due to Jinx. He is also not particularly interesting. I'd rather see Lucy shack up with Voltaire or something for a more interesting dynamic, but unfortunately, I don't think the author will pull a SJM again.
I both loved this and found it hard work! The action was good and was gripping but if the thing between the main female and her beta male is a slow burn romance, it’s wayyyy too slow for me! I am however excited to see what book 2 will bring!
Really enjoyed this first book in a new series, following Lucy and Esme, who are turning out to be great lead characters. Also very much like Greg Manners so far. Lucky me, book 2 will be available in about 5 minutes, so I can keep reading!
In order to be able to enjoy and understand what's going on in this book, you must Read the earlier series. This book was way too confusing and made a lot of references to past characters and past events. Definitely not a standalone book.
This book very much keeps you on the edge of your seat. Wondering what is going on and when you will know the answer to that! It kept My attention until the very end. I highly recommend this book.
Having read The Other Realm series I knew Lucy as a human/Commoner and it was great seeing familiar characters in her new journey as an Alpha Wolf with many challenges in the Other. Definitely a binge worthy series and a another great spin-off from Heather's pen and I'm glad it start it.
