Rate this book
Meg Mackintosh has dreamed of Gregor Grant ever since her father acquired his former lands in Glen Dhui. But when she asks him for his help against the threat of a powerful neighbour, she realises the man she imagined is nothing like the real Gregor. Meg is drawn to this handsome and charismatic stranger, and she soon finds her sensible nature battling with visions of a future with him. Although he seems to desire her as much as she does him, can she trust it is she he wants and not Glen Dhui?

Gregor Grant was once the laird of Glen Dhui, but he lost everything after the rebellion. Now a Captain of Dragoons, he has no hope of regaining the future he once dreamed of. And then Meg arrives, needing his help, and he finds himself beginning to believe. Not just for the life he lost, but for a new life, with the beautiful Meg. As they work together to save the estate, Gregor falls more and more under her spell. How can he persuade the fiery lass that she is his everything?

Can Gregor and Meg find the happy ending they have both been craving? Or will others tear them apart?

Unfortunately, this wasn't really doing it for me, despite the fact that the cover made me expect much.

*sighs* Basically, in a nutshell, this is a slow-burn romance that takes a lot of time to build up the relationship between the hero and heroine; but, ultimately, is hampered by the heroine's lack of confidence and need to be 'in control of her own life' (because, YEAH, that's sooooo realistic for the early 18th century, seriously!), and therefore doesn't really feel worth it even when the couple DO finally get together.

In short, it just wasn't able to convince me that there was really a great love between the hero and heroine, despite the fact that the author WAS trying to set great stuff out there!

Unfortunately, however, it just didn't quite reach the standards I've built up for a romance, and didn't leave me feeling any satisfying sparks, despite the HEA.

Not really a re-read, no thanks; but, as a thrift store book that I got for the lovely cover...meh, it fits. *thumbs up*

Amateuristic writing , the H&h have constantly insecure thoughts about themselves and the romance is based on lust . The story was slow and I skiped a lot , but I wanted to know the end and that is why I give it 2 stars and not 1

It was short, fast paced and steamy. I really enjoyed it. That's why Sara Bennett remains one of my favorite historical romance writers. I cannot get enough of her work. The story was satisfying throughout the book. The only thing that has failed to impress me is the ending. It was sort of anticlimactic. Nearly perfect.

Love love love the cover of this one! The deep blue, churning sky... The eerie glow of moonlight... Holding the awkward, somewhat off-balance pose in gale force winds that have apparently ripped the shirt right off his back... So classic!

Oh my, this book is poorly written. At first, it just seemed long-winded and repetitive. In the first 130 pages or so, the heroine fetches the hero and brings him home. And nothing exciting happens along the way! But then, at about 60%, the writing seemed to take a turn for the worse -- or maybe my patience just ran out. Silly metaphors, vapid sex scenes, comical cliches, and very, very purple prose.

***Spoiler alert!*** The heroine? Fine. The hero? Well, he rides to the villain's castle and is promptly put in a cell. He doesn't escape. He's let out. Not very heroic. The villain? Turns out to be non compos mentis, zoning out in a chair. Not very scary. The plot is overly complicated and simultaneously lacks drama. For instance, the hero spends weeks training an army out of inexperienced and ill-equipped peasants for the impending battle, and then they don't do anything. No battle. Not even a skirmish.

But mostly what drove me crazy with frustration was the stairs. The hero goes up the stairs, and then he comes down, skipping stairs, two or three at a time. Doesn't that sound awkward to you? But immediately after, the man who has ridden his horse up the same indoor flight of stairs needs to come back down too. He rides back down. HORSES CAN'T GO DOWN STAIRS.

Bennett makes a very picturesque little estate post 1715, where we find a host of entertaining characters. The best parts lie in the conversation and jibes between the main couple, Meg and Gregor, but you’ll also find bits of magic and mystery and death-defying experiences. The only disappointment I felt was around the ‘breakup’ phase of their relationship. It only lasted a short while, maybe a few pages, and felt too easily overcome by both parties. Still, it was thoroughly worth the read if you enjoy men in kilts.

AUTHOR: Sara Bennett has a great and interesting plot. She shows the manner in which most romance books are written; someone in peril, someone comes to the rescue, they fall in love. I did not like the book written with too many inner thoughts from the characters. This type of writing slows the pace of the book and removes some of the excitement. I would have preferred more dialogue.

SYNOPSIS: Meg needs to be rescued from an engagement that is being forced on her. Gregor provides her protection. Her father owns the property and land that Gregor would have grown up to be laird. Gregor was forced out of his home due to being a part of a war that was lost. His property and lands were taken. Together Gregor and Meg find ways to fulfill each others' needs with the involvement of Meg's father, General Mackintosh. Gregor continuously lust after Meg (continuously) Love is found along with another person's desperation for a lost love.

FAVORITE PART: Alison and Malcolm reunite after 12 years.

LEAST FAVORITE PART: The fact that the book does not delve into what happened to the properties and lands that are owned by the Duke of Abercauldy.

SEX SCALE: Of the following five options: 1) NOT very descriptive and requires imagination' 2) WILL make you wiggle a little) 3) WISH it was me; 4) OH boy, do not have to use my imagination at all; 5) EROTICA and well over the top
******THIS BOOK GETS a TWO rating for "WILL make you wiggle a little******

YOU WILL LIKE THIS BOOK IF YOU CAN APPRECIATE a man showing his love for a woman by continuously lusting after the woman; IF you can appreciate seeing a person regain something that was of greatest value; IF you can enjoy reading about how a person gets out of a "cornered" situation; IF you can appreciate what can happen after 12 years of having been away from true love.

Just finished this one, and I loved it!!! A great story...I really haven't got a bad thing to say about it, I'd give it 4½ stars if I could! Recommend it to anyone who loves Historical Highlander romance, it was just a great read. Characters were believable, I laughed, I cried, will definitely read it again!

:)

This is a steamy but sweet story, with many interesting and endearing characters.
I like Meg's strong independent personality, and Gregor's tough yet sweet character. The duke of Abercauldy was ... an interesting character, and Lorenzo played his role very well. I also like Shona and Kenneth, and Alison and Malcolm Bain and Angus; Duncan was a good character too.
